So I started getting dressed this morning, and then I wondered if what I was putting on was the same darn thing I put on last Friday. I ran to my computer to check this blog, and my internet was down! Horror!
What to do? Wear this outfit? Scrounge around the closet for another? Does it even matter? I work with computer techie boys, their idea of casual Friday is a wrinkled polo shirt rooted out of the hamper and some chinos with pleats, a few stains and a hem short enough to show off their ankle bones and athletic socks.
I realized it mattered to me to look cute more than it did to look like I have mroe than one week's worth of outfits.
So the outfit was:
Brown jewel neck sleeveless shell of silk/cashmere blend from Banana Republic. I bought it last spring in pink with a matching cardigan and wore it to my wedding rehearsal dinner with some fabu pink and silver paisley brocade cropped pants with silver strappy heels. Well this one I found for $9.99 at the Banana outlet a few miles from my job! Score!
Over the shell I wore a stone canvas motocross inspired cut jacket from Mecca. You know me and my fashion deals from there! The jacket has brown stitching and a really great shape. I wore with this a necklace of funky wood, ceramic and glass beads in brown tones. My great aunt made the necklace in the 40's or something, but it is so current now. Love it!
On the bottom I wore my beloved jeans from The Gap that I made a teensy more vintage looking. On my feet I wore snakeskin pointy toed super high heeled pumps from Nine West. They are shades from a pale beige to taupe to brown and scream for raves and compliments every time I wear them.
Hair was curly, makeup was subtl;e and dewy with a slight smoky brown eye and sheer gloss with a slight peach tint. Single thin gold bangle.
I got to work, set up my laptop and then had to go right into a conference, without time to check this blog to see if I had made a repeat performance. I KNOW I wore these jeans last Friday. But the rest of the ensemble? This question was praying on my mind as I walked to the conference room carrying my folio, a pen, two binders, my Nalgene bottle and half of a bagel from the kitchen with chive cream cheese (yum!).
High heels make me feel as though I can walk with authority, as though I am a super model on the runway. I sauntered to the room, with five of my male peers following behind.
And then it happened.
Somehow my right heels caught on to a "vintage" area of the hem of my left jean leg. One of those places that is threadbare. Well the heel ran right through those threads, made a hole and my legs were pinned together. I started to lose my balance. I tried to stand on my one left leg and by doing that, I propelled myself forward about six feet, then fell to the ground, skidding down the hallway carpet a few feel a la Slip N Slide. Cream cheese bagel in hair and on carpet. Nalgene bottle rolled into VP's office. Papers everywhere, and I in severe pain. Not hospitalization pain, but battered, bruised and terribly embarassed pain.
So I stood up, looked at all my worried coworkers who viewed the incident and bowed.
"Thank you, thank you. If you wish to see more, the next performance will cost you."
They all laughed, and we walked into the conference room. The joke all conference. was about my fall. I was laughing only on the outside. On the inside I was worried about the damage to my favorite jeans, and wodnering how badly I scuffed the elbow of my jacket. After and hour I just had to excuse myself to the restroom to check out the situation.
Jacket - Intact.
Hem of jeans - torn, but sort of in a cool thrift-store way.
Elbow - scraped and slightly bleeding, but not enough to get on jacket
Knee - scraped but not bleeding
Right big toe - toenail broken 1/2 way down and then that part split. Bleeding. Purple. HURRRRTS!
Hair - free of cream cheese. Got all of that without a mirror before the conference started. Whew!
and my mind? Still wondering if I wore this outfit last Friday too. I sneak to my office before returning to the conference room.
I'm safe! I now remember that I wore the orange J. Crew sweater last Friday! Yay me!
