Yesterday was pretty hectic at work. I met my good friend at the mall for some retail therapy.
At Aldo I got a silver pleather clutch for $9.99. It's funky, kitchy, and perfectly adorable with a black outfit and my trademark silver jewelry. They had a great sale on shoes and bags.
At Ann Taylor (who I ADORE) I headed straight for their sale section. The black merino turtle I have been sporting lately I found in a dusty rose/salmon color. $29.99. I also found some tweed pants to match - shades of cream, brown, tan, coral and rose. $34.99. I also bought a pair of ivory crisp trousers. Flat front, creased leg, stiff sueded twill. I know, I know I own like 50,000 pairs of ivory/cream/winter white trousers but they always look so smart and there is always a pair at the cleaners! They were $39.99. Then I had my Love Cures card which gave me 15% off the purchase. Score!
Today I am wearing the merino turtle with the tweed trousers. Camel pointy pumps on the feet. Sivler hoops and silver cuff.
I forgot my camera at home, so you get the picture of me in the office elevator at the end of the day.
Makeup is the usual foundation, concealer and blush. Pale dusty pink shadow over the lids of my eyes, Damson in the crease and along the lash line. Another of the mini lipglosses I got for Christmas on my lips - this one is a brick color. Ended up looking like a darker version of the sweater. Hair is straight, deep part for sideswept bangs, tucked behind one ear. I used a good dose of BioSilk in my hair as that the winter is wreaking havock on my tresses. BioSilk is a great product, good glosser for the hair that doesn't look greasy, and a great moisturizer for the skin too! I got mine free with purchase at Trade Secret about two years ago - a trial size bottle I still haven't used half of (a little goes a looooong way!).
Today we are leaving for the beach. I plan to trade the tweed trousers for a pair of vintage Gap jeans and my black boots.

Unseasonably Warm
Black merino turtleneck from Ann Taylor. Zebra print cord skirt from Target last year, black pointy punps from B.P./Nordstrom.
i.d. Bare Escentuals foundation and concealer. Taupe shadow on lid (Body Shop) and Damson shadow at lash line and in crease (Body Shop - a great color for all skin tones! It's purple in the container, but a smoky natural color on all colors of skin. Flattering on dark complexions, fair complexions - used to mix with a bronze for African American skins, taupe with fair skins, and a dusty pink for Asian skin). Nars Orgasm blush on the cheeks and a touch of Almay bronzer to look less pale and sickly.
On the lips is a tiny lipgloss called "ten" that my mom.. ahem SANTA got me in my stocking this year. It was a pack of four glosses and the pack came from Target.
Nothing thrilling, but I always feel lady like when wearing a knee length skirt and pumps! I have been clip clopping all over the place today. I wear these shoes often with pants, but with a skirt they just seem all the more sassy and feminine.

Weekend Recap...
Saturday:
Saturday started with a family get-together with my husband's relatives. At his Aunt's house, buffet brunch, Secret Santa and small talk. (I'm the one in the black top)
The black merino turtleneck from Ann Taylor that I wore to the holiday party on the 17th. Gray Tahari suiting trousers - part of a suit. My black Enzo pointy boots. Silver hoops and cuff.
I wasn't feeling very well. Subtle makeup - taupe shadow, mascara, some blush to not look so pekkid. Sheer coral lipgloss from Goldie. Bad hair day.
Later that day i switched to some olive cargos from Old Navy and a gray cintage CBGC tee shirt to run some errands and veg out at the house.
Sunday:
Christmas Day. I was feeling quite under the weather and it hurt to put on clothing. I donned my brown merino v-neck from the Gap, a pair of Gap low rise bootcut jeans in a vintage wash, sneakers. Wore two strands of orange glass beads and a double strand of mini wood beads. Single gold bangle. Taupe shadow with some brown around the lash line and in the crease. Lip balm.
I know this is a positively hideous picture. I was sick, I had just woken up, I was bickering with my mom and my husband had a camera in my face. Nice sick-girl hair, eh? You can at least see a strap from my new Christmas purse!
Monday:
Monday I didn't do much other than hit the gym and drive my sister back to the city. Black yoga pants and berry colored tee (both from Target), coral hooded pullover in a heavyweight terry/canvas fabric from Old Navy and my Adidas sneaks.
Today:
No picture because I forgot my camera at work. Blue merino v-neck from J. Crew. Ivory sueded cotton trousers from Ann Taylor iron with a front crease. Silver hoops, silver cuff and silver pendant. Black pointy boots.
Taupe shadow, thin line of black liner, black mascara. Berry lipliner from The Body Shop covered with a lipgloss called "ten" that came in a pack of four from Target ("Santa" put it in my stocking). Warmer out - just wore my turquoise pashmina for a cover-up.
Will be back to normal on tomorrow with pics. I work today, tomorrow and half of Thursday, and then a long weekend a tthe beach with my buds! I'll be sure to take pics while I am there, but I won't be posting until after the New Year.

Fun Day Friday
When we have holidays or Fridays before holidays, our boss lets us leave early. Sometimes he buys the team lunch and calls the day Fun Day Friday (or Monday, or Tuesday...). On these Fun Days we often dress more casually than casual Fridays. You know me, I feel weird in sneakers and don't own a ton of casual wear. This is my version of casual:
Brown ribbed tank from Old Navy. Amber colored shetland cardigan from a thrift store. Multiple necklaces - glass and wood from a beach boutique and from Claire's. Dark lightweight jeans from The Gap outlet. Black boots from Enzo.
On the face - Bare Escentuals foundation and concealer (those who question this product and the cost - I just wanted to let you know an entire foundation has lasted me all year. I just bought a replacement yesterday at Sephora. I did use MAC for summer, but one tub of Bare Escentuals lasted for nice months of daily and sometimes twice-daily use). I used the warm shimmer cubes from the Body Shop, the lightest over the whole lid, the darkest in the crease and around the lash line. Mascara. Lots of Almay bronzer. Sally Hansen gloss in Champagne Toast.
And the hair? Not a good hair day. Thought I would go straight, but after drying my hair it looked as though it wanted to be beachy waves. I encouraged it with the VO5 mousse and some Marc Anthony Strictly Curls gel/lotion. Yeah, it looked rough. Limp waves, sort of raggedy. I took a curling iron to the worst offenders and it helped some, but I look a bit... messy. Hey, it's casual Friday, right?

The Old Denim Jacket
I usually do not buy overly trendy items. Didn't get Uggs, no ponchos, no CK Jeans tees, or Bebe rhinestoned jeans. Nary a Louis Vuitton or faux LV purse in my closet. However when the puffed sleeve look was in a few years ago, I bought a jacket. It was just too cute.
About a year ago, I realized it seemed dated to wear the jacket any longer. It was obviously a past trend. However this season's Romanian and Czarian inspired jackets lets the puffed sleeve a a few more days in the sun without looking passe. As that it is almost time for the holidays and my thoughts are places other than in my wardrobe, I am pulling from the back of the closet for some oldies yet goodies to get me by until Christmas.
Denim jacket with epaulets and puffed sleeves from The Limited. Bought in.... I am guessing Winter 2002 based on which Limited I bought it in/what mall I was working in. Under it is my red-orange silk knit scoop neck shell from Banana Republic bought this past summer. Black trousers from Ann Taylor in a suiting fabric. Black pointy boots from Enzo. Silver hoops and cuff.
On face is Bare Escentuals as usual, only bronzer (Almay) for blush. Taupe shadow from the Bosy Shop on lids, a bit of the brown Maybelline brow powder in the crease and around lash line for shadow. Black mascara. That Origins bronze lip balm on lips.
Hair is being very cooperative, though it may not look it in the second picture. My stylist once told me I over wash my hair. I should only wash it a max of every other day. I am the type with dry ends and oily scalp so that sounded just disgusting to me. He told me to rinse my hair on the non-shampoo day and use conditioner only - the conditioner would get rid of the bad oils and keep the good ones.
Since I got highlights I have been using Halo shampoo and conditioner. My stylist recommended it and it was on sale. I find the conditioner to be very thin and milky, yet very hydrating. Washing with just it this morning left my hair bouncy, soft and quite manageable. I used my new VO5 mousse, my Sexy Straight Hair Power Straight, and my cheapo Conair dryer with a cheapo Conair round boarhair brush to get it straight, but full of body with some cute piecey effects. Yay!

Lack of Motivation
I went to bed knowing I wouldn't want to go to work today.
Makes for a very uninspired outfit for work.
Black merino turtleneck from Ann Taylor. Olive cotton sateen pants from Ann Taylor. Pointy black boots. Silver hoops.
Makeup is TONS of foundation and concealer and bronzer to cover up bags under the eyes, zits around the mouth and an allover pekid complexion. I look like ass.
Nars Orgasm on the cheeks, a pale olive/gold shadow from The Body Shop from lash line to a bit above the crease. A touch of brown shadow (my brow powder) in the crease. The same lipstick as yesterday - I think it's called Fawn Shimmer or something similar, from L'Oreal. Lots of mascara - my darling Zoom Lash from MAC.
At least today is a good hair day. Already got a compliment from the metrosexual in my office!

Brown merino bracelet sleeved v-neck sweater from The Gap. Light gray trousers from Tahari (part of a suit). Brown snakeskin pumps from Nine West. Brown wood and glass bead necklace from my mom's jewelry box, large gold hoops from Claire's Boutique, slim gold bangle bought at yard sale for 25 cents.
Makeup is Bare Escentuals done heavy duty because my face is breaking out big time and I am looking a bit sallow and sickly lately. Bronzer from Almay everywhere to give me some color, and a heavy application of Nars Orgasm on the cheeks. Eyes are done with the Shimmer Cubes from The Body Shop in Warm, a bit of my eyebrow powder around the lashes as liner (with a small angled brush from The Body Shop). Lipstick is one of those L'Oreal Endless Platinum lipcolors, a taupe/mauve sort of color that looks darker in the tube than on the lips.

Candycane Wishes
I have a love/hate relationship with another blog. On it the contributors wrote their dream holiday gift lists and I thought they were kinda ridiculous. So I decided to make my own. I found their list ridiculous because they don't sell themselves, they sell a blog about fashion rules and advice. I found their lists ridiculous because I found them to be stupid, childish and unfashionable. They wanted things I would not be caught dead donning my body with.
Here on this blog, I am not trying to tell anyone how to dress. I am not admitting myself a fashion expert on this blog, or attempting to be the height of trendiness. I am just showing what I wear every day. And therefore I will create my dream wish list without misinforming others, preaching what I believe to be "hip" or anything else. Don't like my list? That's okay. I doubt you like my wardrobe all the time either. It's all good! Go ahead and rant, I won't be offended!
Dear Santa:I have been a very good girl this year. I adhered to my resolution of giving back to the community, the one of starting to write in public (three blogs!) and as for the one about losing weight... well you can't say I haven't at least tried on occasion!
As you know, I love me some accessories. I have been eying this Burberry purse. I know it's pretty pricey, but I adore the green color - what a fabu accent with all my clothes! Imagine Santa, that green with a pair of ringspun denim!
In 2005 I have been quite daring, Santa. I have gone outside the box and have allowed myself to own shoes that are not black - in fact one of my facvorite pairs of shoes are brown snakeskin pumps! Brown Santa, can you believe it? Well since I have added to my shoe wardrobe with shades of brown, I think this purse from Marc Jacobs would made a lovely addition to the fashion family:

And look at the studs! You know how much I like biker and rocker-themed accessories!
And Santa, you know I love luxurious home accessories - I have wanted a Tocca candle for a very long time. The Cleopatra fragrance is my fave:
Speaking of the home Santa - you know I adore my fashion but I love my home to look as nice as my body. This is why my darling Santa, I really need the Marston Sleigh Bed from Restoration Hardware:
As you know Santa, my husband and I are still sleeping on the rickety white faux-iron bed I bought from IKEA in 1997 and the mattress set that *GASP* his mom had before she died. This bed would be lovely with a Tempur-Pedic mattress system. King size please - we love the snuggliness of our Queen, but my darling hubby still has to bend his legs to fit in the bed - King would be so lovely for his tootsies!
And Santa, you know I am a sucker for advertising. Because of this I would really like a Right-Hand Ring. I love my bling on my left hand - it means love and union. However my right hand doesn't look right any more wearing my chunky turquoise and silver rings with the platinum in competition. I think this would suit my right hand nicely:
While we are speaking of jewelry Santa - I would really like a watch. I know, I know I haven't worn one in years. I lose them, break them, find them annoying but I think I am an adult now - there are times and places where a watch could be quite lovely. I would like a classic timepiece that isn't overly trendy or overly stuffy. I believe this one from Bulova would be a great stocking stuffer:

And dear Santa - I have been traveling a decent amount for work, and plan to travel for pleasure in the New Year. I could really use a new suitcase. My current pullman is very sad lookin g- it's last trip through the BWI Airport luggage carousel tore the front pocket and left black scuff marks that just won't come out. I really like this hardside pullman by International Traveler. The price is excellent, and it has gotten great reviews. May I have it in Aqua Blue please? I would be able to find it in the mass of luggage at the baggage claim, and I would look terribly sassy as I race to my flight!

And Santa, I think I am the only little girl in America without an iPod.
With it I would like a pretty case, a thingie so it could play in my car, and a thingie where it could be a stereo in my bedroom!
And finally Santa, my last gift is the most important one of all. My sweet Saturn is in bad shape - after the accident this year, the rearending it got two years ago, and getting it used, it is ready to be donated to Melwood on behalf of my childhood friend Terry. I believe a fitting replacement would be a nice Saab convertible.
Lime yellow please. I promise to be the designated driver all year if you could get me this! If you get me leather seats, I will be the driver for all the beach excursions!
Thank you Santa. I look forward to all my presents this coming Sunday!

My Love Affair
I don't have a picture of my makeup - well I do but it's horrible. I am fighting a cold and allergies and my eyes are so puffy I look deformed. I tried to cover it up with expertly applied makeup, but makeup can't hide lumpy lids. Did shimmery white in the corners of the eyes and on the brow bone. White liner on the rims of my eyes, black liquid liner curved at the edges of the eyes, curled lashes. Pink cheeks and pink gloss.
This is a skirt I adore. I found it at Marshall's for $39.99. I haven't worn it in several months because I know it's bad for me and my figure.
However, I felt like a skirt today, and I didn't shave my legs this weekend. I thought it may look cute with my denim blazer (Ann Taylor) and a silk-cashmere scoop neck shell (Banana Republic). Not too bad. Put on the silver discs necklace from Chico's to counterbalance the sequins on the skirt, and my black pointy pumps from Brass Blum / Nordstrom finished the look.

Happy Holidays...
So I had my cousin's holiday party. It was at his house, which looks straight from a Pottery Barn catalog. He said it was casual, but you can never be too sure what another's idea of casual is.
Hair curly. Makeup polished yet subtle (taupe shadow, black liquid liner, pale tannish-rose gloss, nice amount of blush).
Black merino floppy turtleneck from Ann Taylor. Ivory sueded cotton trousers from Ann Taylor. My black pointy boots from Enzo. Silver hoops and cuff.
I am glad I wore this as that the attire of the guests ran the gamut - from jeans and a sweater to a sequined shell with sateen cigarette pants. My outfit seemed to fit nicely, and my Aunt told me I looked as though I lost weight.

Slacker!!!
Okay, so I have been slacking. I keep forgetting my camera at work and am unable to document my attire!
Let's see...
WEDNESDAY:
My red-orange tissue weight J. Crew cotton v-neck sweater, white J. Crew wifebeater underneath, dark liughtweight cotton jeans from The Gap with patch pockets. Black pointy boots. On the face was very subtle makeup. Did the hair curly again, a bit of brown shadow around the lash lines, my Origins bronze lip balm.
THURSDAY:
Black scoop neck cotton sweater from Caslon, olive sateen military-inspired pants from Ann Taylor, black pointy boots.
Wish I took a picture this day because my hair and makeup were fabu. My hair had an almost retrom lok with the curls - very Vargas girl. I did a very fine line of liquid liner and washed the lids with a pale olive/brass color of shadow and put a bit under the lower lashes. Bronzer for blush, tannish rose lipgloss.
FRIDAY:
My cherry red ribbed crew neck sweater from Chico's. Black Ann Taylor trousers with front seam. Black pointy boots. Cherry red sheer lip color from... Cover Girl?? Black liquid liner, taupe shadow, lots of mascara and blush.
And today? Well today I woke up to the front door being banged on - my husband's friend was in the area and wanted to say hi. Quickly dressed in olive distressed chinos from Old Navy and a black fleece from Mountain Hard Ware. Then we went to the gym - teal scoop neck tee from The Gap and black sueded cotton pull-on pants from Target with blue and orange sneaks from Adidas.
Tonight is a hoiday party at my cousin's. The plan is ivory sueded cotton trousers from Ann Taylor and a black merino turtle from the same store with pointy boots. Better get off here so I can get ready!

And This Is a Combo I Despise...
Fat girls who try to look thin dress in all black. All it does is make them look like fat girls in mourning or fat girls into Goth. As a non-thin girl, i try to not fit that sterotype. I celebrate my body with bright colors and figure-flattering cuts. Fun shoes and cool jewelery that show I am a whole package, not just a number on a scale. I love my whole package and wrap it accordingly.
I think I also hate an all black outfit from my years selling skincare and cosmetics. I was required to wear all black. When I left that company I took all my makeup and lotion stained black pants and burned them in the chimenea in the back yard. Every black sweater, oxford, skirt or blazer was donated to charity. I promised to add color to my life again.
However today I dressed in the dark. My husband got off work at 3AM today to go back to work at 11AM. He was dog tired, and I needed to get ready for work. I grabbed an outfit based on feel, knowing that at least I wasn't wearing purple and orange with plaids and stripes.
Black ribbed crew-neck sweater from Chico's. Black wool blend trousers from Ann Taylor Loft. Red stone necklace from a boutique at the beach. Red pointy pumps from Steven (got for a STEAL at Off Broadway Shoes!). At least a few touches of red break the monotomy.
Hair is curly today. Marc Anthony's Curls gel, curl spray, silicone glosser and anti-humidity hairspray.
Makeup is Bare Escentuals foundation and concealer, a touch of Almay bronzer so I don't look like a corpse, Nars Orgasm blush on the cheeks. Berry lip pencil from the Body Shop topped with Passionfruit lip balm from The Body Shop for moisture and subtle shine. Two coats of MAC Zoom Lash mascara and a fine line of black liquid liner by Maybelline.

Not The Best Combination
Pink merino v-neck from J. Crew with an orchid wifebeater from Old Navy. Gray suiting trousers from Ann Taylor, teal suede wedges from Seychelles. Silver hoops.
i.d. Bare Escentuals foundation and concealer (need some more foundation!), Nars Orgasm on the cheeks, pale pink shadow from The Body Shop, black liquid liner from Maybelline, black mascara from MAC, pink lipgloss in a pot from The Body Shop.
No clue my reasoning behind this outfit. My nude bra is wet, hanging in the the bathroom. The sweater and tank would have looked better with jeans, but my jeans were dirty or... well I felt like wearing something comfy. I don't feel very diva today. Considered calling out but didn't want to waste PTO. So I am here... but not mentally. but I am comfy!

The Morning After
Drank a few too many vodka tonics and crshed still wearing my makeup. Thought you may enjoy a totally unglamorous look of me, teeth not brushed, face not washed, hair not brushed, still in nightgown.
Oh, what am I wearing?
Short sleevelss gown by Eileen West, picked up at the Nordstrom Half Yearly sale for $35.00. My husband hates it, says I look like a grandma in it. I like it because it's light and airy and feminine and easy to slip on to brush my teeth and let the dog out to pee. It's fun to dash down the stairs and have it float around me. I had to get it in a medium, it is quite billowly and runs very very big.

Happy Holiday Party!
Tonight was my company holiday party. Passed hors d'ourves and cocktails, open bar, seated dinner, dancing and raffles. Invitation said semi-formal.
I wore the same black dress I wore to a wedding a month prior. It is made out of a slinky knit - similar to the Traveler collection at Chico's. I got the dress at Nordstrom for $75. The brand is Ronni Nicole (not shown on the website, but still available in the store). The dress is number sizes, but I fit into a 12 when I am usually a 14 petite. Surplice bodice, shirred waist, hankercheif hem. Very flattering.
With it I wore a strand of jet beads I got at The Limited several years ago. Wrapped once around the neck, let the tassled ends just hang in front. Wore matching jet chandelier earrings that I got at The Limited last year in their after-Christmas sale (great jewelry to be had at their sales!).
Put hot rollers in the back of my hair to give it some body and lift. Otherwise the same hair as every day (not that fancy of an occasion).
Did a smoky eye, but with purple (L'Oreal) and dark green/black (Body Shop) eye shadows. Purple on the lid and a bit above the crease. The dark green in the crease and along the lash line. Tons of mascara. Nars Orgasm on the cheeks, and the tannish pink gloss from Sally Hansen.
With it I wore a black crepe shawl I got at Express several years ago. Has embroidery at the hem of peacocks in blue, green, purple and magenta. Tassled ends. Purse is a black matte satin clutch from Aldo that I got last year. Shoes were black crepe strappy heels from Fabulair that I got from $19.99 at Rackroom Shoes. Not super sassy, but I can dance in them all night without being a cripple. No hose. I am very anti-hose except for religious events or interviews. I don't own any hose but a pair of fishnets and one pair of black.
I did give myself a pedicure - Coney Island Cotton Candy by OPI. Have to have cute tootsies with open toed shoes!!

Casual Friday and Lots of Snow
You can see the hot rollers in my hair trying to give me some body. My hair gets so flat and limp in snowy weather! Soft and crazy like little kid hair. The rollers helped a bit, but I think what helped more is the new VO5 mousse I got at the grocery store. One of the cheapest mousses, but I liked the new red container and I think it does a great job of giving lift without being sticky, obvious or heavy.
Dark red ribbed merino floppy turtleneck from Ann Taylor. Dark Gap jeans with patch pockets on the front. Black pointy boots from Enzo. Silver hoops and cuff bracelet.
And the makeup was very very subtle. i.d. Bare Escentuals (that did a GREAT job of camouflaging the humongous zit on my jaw), Black mascara, some bronzer as blush, some taupe shadow, Passionfruit Lip Balm from The Body Shop.

My Favorite Necklace
The cool wood necklace I snagged from my mom, brown merino bracelet sleeved v-neck sweater from The Gap, French vanilla colored cuffed trousers from Ann Taylor, Brown snakeskin pumps, six skinny gold bangles from Target.
Makeup is Bare Escentuals, bronzer on cheeks, fawn shadow, the brown powder for my brows used as a shadow - crease and along lash line. Origins bronze tinted balm, mascara.
Not too exciting, I slept through my alarm from staying up all night watching Project Runway.

Did the hair curly today. Out of the shower, didn't rub it dry, just put in a towel turban. Removed the towel, scrunched with hands, curled around fingers to assist curl. Applied Marc Anthony Strictly Curls lotion, spritzed a bit of the complimenting spray. My diffuser is broken, so I put my dryer on the lowest setting, smooshed up a bit of hair and blew it dry without moving around the hair. The front of my hair does not like to curl, so I took a curling iron to the bangs area so it matched the rest of the hair. A bit of Dove hair spray to keep the curl and add a bit of body.
My outfit? White ribbed tank from J. Crew. Brown wool/cashmere cuffed trousers from Ann Taylor. Camel pointy pumps from Nordstrom/B.P. Rust colored shetland cardigan from a thrift store. Bead and wood double strand necklace.
On face - Bare Escentuals foundation and concealer. Bronzer for blush. The Body Shop's shimmer cubes in Warm on eyes. Black Zoom Lash mascara from MAC. The Body Shop lip crayon in fawn shimmer and Goldie lipgloss in a coral color over it.

Forgot My Camera at Work....
So I wasn't able to take pictures of me. Sorry!
Black merino turtle/cowl neck from Ann Taylor. Like a full turtle, not as unflattering as a regular turtle, but not as droopy as a cowl.
Ivory sueded cotton trousers from Ann Taylor. Creased flat front, cuffs.
Black pointy high skinny heel boots from Enzo.
Silver hoops
Subtle smoky eyes, a bit of bronzer in place of blush, brownish pink gloss from Sally Hansen.
I like this outfit. I think I may wear it to the casual holiday party I am going to on the 17th. Dinner, drinks, TV sort of event. told to dress casually, but you know me - I don't own casual. it's business casual or paint-splattered. Little in between! Better to be over dressed than under dressed!

Quality AND Quantity
This Sunday I went to the mall. As a previous mall employee, I try to steer clear of shopping arenas between Thanksgiving and New Year, however the receipt of a generous mall gift certificate, a change to bitter cold weather (and me a different size from last winter) and an upcoming company holiday party forced me to break my rule.
For those on a budget or with a certain lifestyle/fashion style may only visit certain stores in the mall. Be it a mall in California, Montana, New Jersey or Florida, many women will first visit their "safe stores." When I worked at express, I was always fascinated by the women on vacation who would make time in their holiday schedule to check out the local Express. Yes, stores carry some different items based on clientele and geography, but the stores are usually 85% the same.
If you have the time, it is good on occasion to visit those stores you don't usually frequent. Artsy creative spirit? Try visiting a Talbots - you may find something surprising and wonderful. Conservative look? You may find the perfect "something" in a store like Bebe or Cache. Budget is more Wal Mart? It doesn't hurt to take a lap around Sigrid Olsen or Banana Republic", see the season's new styles and peruse the sale racks for a gem.
I went to my local mid-range mall. Anchors are Hecht's, JC Penney, Lord & Taylor, Nordstrom.
I always start with Nordstrom. Their sale racks are amazing to find high quality clothes at amazing prices. Found a gorgeous pair of Enzo Angiolini boots for $59.90, originally close to $100.00. And they came in wide width for my sausage feet! I had similar boots from Payless that I purchased three years ago that had to be retired. I was worried to find a pointy toe and slim high heel black leather boot may cost me close to $100. For a boot that may last me for another three years, for jeans and business casual and even suits - I find $60 to be a fabulous deal.
I then headed to Ann Taylor. Ann Taylor sells sizes from 2 to 16, most styles in Petites. Ann Taylor usually has a pretty extensive sale rack with many current pieces and a multitude of sizes. I have found that different malls seem to carry different sizes in their sale rack. When I head toward the ritzy part of the city, I seem to find larger sizes left in the sale department. If I head to the suburbs or more remote malls, the sale rack holds more small sizes (something to consider for your big shopping trips).

At Ann Taylor I found a ton of wonderful pieces in their sale section. A black merino cowl neck sweater for $29.99 (not shown on website). A pair of winter white heavy sueded cotton cuffed trousers for $29.99, and a pair of black trousers the same fabric as an Ann Taylor suit jacket in my closet at home for $39.99. I had purchased a Love Cures card, which gave me 15% off any purchase of $100 or more. This brought my purchase of three classic items to about $85.00. The prices were equivalent to stores like Target or Old Navy, but still the pieces had quality, great fit, great style. It really is possible to find quality at low prices.
Since I was with my mom, we then headed to Chicos. This is my mom's favorite store as that they sell easy-care and artistic clothing that fits her body shape as well as her personality. The clothes are not my type, but I have found some great pieces of jewelry in there. This time while my mom was in the fitting room I found some classic ribbed crew neck sweaters in a silk blend that skimmed the body and came in some wonderful saturated colors. Regularly $49, these sweaters were on sale for $39 and my mom had a discount club card for an additional 5% off. I bought the sweater in basic black and a rosy red, seeing these sweaters go from being a suit shell, to business casual with trousers, to weekend wear with jeans. I had a similar sweater from Express a few years ago that got mangled in the wash. I was thrilled to find a substitute, and even in a similar color in a store I rarely even enter.
I went to the mall reciting my mantra of "Versatile sweaters, work pants, black boots. Versatile sweaters, work pants, black boots". I saw many fabulous things in many great stores, stores I don't always frequent, stores I don't always have success in or feel match my personality. If you have the time during your shopping adventure, be daring and visit a new store. You may be pleasantly surprised! Often it is possible to find quality as well as quantity in your local mall!

Another Late Day...
But not as bad since it's casual Friday.
Blue merino v-neck from J. Crew. Necklace of sea glass and various beads (shades of blues, greens and peach). Dark cotton denim jeans from The Gap Outlet store. My teal suede wedges. Pretty basic and dull.
Makeup - same i.d. Bare Escentuals foundation and concealer, a touch of Almay bronzer to make me look alive, some Nars orgasm on the apples of my cheeks. Fawn shadow, touch of pale gray int he crease, charcoal at the lash lines. My tan/tawny whatever Sally Hansen lip gloss. Two coats of mascara.
And now you see my winter attire. Turquoise pashmina as a scarf, brown sueded 7/8 length single breasted coat from Express that I got for less than $10.00.
Ah, the story of the suede coat. I was working at Express in 2000 and a woman came to the counter. She had a coat to return. Her mother had passed away and they were cleaning out her house, and they found this coat. It was never worn, the tags stillon, the receipt in the pocket. The receipt was from 1993. The coat in 1993 was $279.00. It is brown suede, notch collar, three buttons, single breasted, hangs to below the knee. Great tailored fit, Thinsulate lining. Size large, and I worked amongst women stressing because 1/2 is too big.
So no sale was final in those days of Express, so we gave the daughter her $279.00 and figured - we can't put it on the floor because it is seven years old. We would have to damage it out. I asked if I could buy it. I know we are allowed to buy past season (the term is LY for Last year) clothing. The rate is usually $9.99 for LY tops, sweaters and such. I offered to buy the coat - how much would it be? The contacted the District Manager. She said $9.99. I snatched it immediately and that is how I ended up with this fabulous brown suede coat for less than $10.00!

Fashion Truth and Fiction
We have hear many "rules" for fashion over the years - some which is valid, much which is not. I do believe there are some things that are universally flattering, some things that should be banned from stores for being so universally unflattering. There are a few fashion "rules" that have been around for years, I am here to dispell the myth that they are always true.
Wearing all black makes you look slimmer: FICTION
Flip through some photographs, find those where you or a friend is in a black top, black pants. What do you notice first? Not that they are looking particularly svelte. No, the first thing you notice is the negative space - that which is not dressed in black. Arms that are usually lovely suddenly look like sausages. A short neck suddenly looks positively minute. A bitty of a double chin is now emphasized. Look at that same person in a bight color - the color is what draws the eye first, then the whole package - the whole image.
Go into a fitting room with the same top - one in black, one in a happy color. Test the two with black pants. Which look is more flattering? Which one makes you look slimmer? Yes, black will camouflage bumps and lumps, but really, you can't disguise your weight or your body shape unless you wear a mumu. You will receive more compliments in an outfit that mixes color with black.
Wearing a light color on the bottom draws attention and emphasizes large hips/thighs/butt: FICTION
Yes, your eye may be drawn to the light color first, but if a good cut, a light color on bottom can be terribly flattering. Ivory pants with a black top is dramatic and elegant. A turquoise top with white capris is crisp and summery. Light colored pants can dress up any outfit, and people will not be scrutinizing your butt any more than they would if you were wearing a dark color.
If you choose to wear a light color on the bottom, ensure the pants are lined - this will reduce see-through and smooth over curves and bumps. Also wear underwear that matches your skin, not the pants. White or cream undies under ivory pants is very very visible, even with lining. Go with a nude color for the best effect.
Bangs on round faces make the face look fatter and should be avoided: FICTION
Straight bangs a la Carnie Wilson in Wilson Phillips' heyday may not be the best look, but some wispy, diagonal or sideswept bangs can be terribly flattering to most any face shape. Hair around the face draws attention to your eyes, your mouth, your facial expressions. It blurs the lines between face and space. As long as it isn't a thick curtain of hair above your brow, bangs are a great way to spice up your hair style and your image
Horizontal stripes make you look heavier: TRUTH.... USUALLY
Confusing, huh? Well as there are many styles of striped tops out there, as there are ways that stripes will or will not flatter your figure.
Wide stripes similar to boat neck tees that Gaultier made popular are hard to wear if you are large busted. A stripe usually lands right across your bustline drawing attention to the area, and not in the most flattering way. Stripes on large arms can make them look more flabby and larger.
Thin stripes can often be acceptable, depending on the colors. If the colors are similar and blending, it can go from having the dreaded horizontal stripe effect to being more like a heathered or marled look, not accentuating anything in particular. Varigated stripes can be quite flattering. I once purchased a black and white striped v-neck sweater that had wider stripes at the shoulders, narrowing stripes at the bust, mini stripes at the torso and gradual larger stripes toward the hem. This sweater gave me the ultimate hourglass figure - narrow at the waist with curve of hips and bust. Every time I wore it people asked me if I lost weight. In the 80's there was a style of one-piece swimsuit that used the same concept - varigating widths of stripes to create an optical illusion - enlarging the bust, reducing the torso.
No one over a size 6 should wear a two piece suit / I am plus size so I must wear a one piece or skirted suit: FICTION
Take a size 4 woman and put her in some of the monstrosities they sell for larger women heading to the beach, and the slim woman will look like a whale. Those little skirts are not covering - they are emphasizing. People at the pool or beach can tell you are heavy - gosh all you are wearing is less than a yard of spandex. A flippy skirt or boy shorts do not hide it - they usually make your rear and hips look larger hidden under that fabric. No one needs a skirted suit unless they like the retro look or they are 5 years old. You're not fooling anyone and you're making yourself look heavier, older, and less stylish.
As for two piece suits - tankinis are God's gift to women. Often you can find a different size for the top than the bottom (because most women are not the same size on both ends of the belly button), you can find the top AND the bottom that are the most flattering for your figure, the overlap or hint of skin showing between top and bottom breaks up the line, reducing the eye stopping on the midsection.
For coverage, invest in a gauzy coverup, a sarong, even a crisp white shirt. Tanks, boxers, sopping wet tee shirts cling to the skin, make you look messy, are too hot in the summer, and do not hide a thing. Like skirted suits, it's drawing attention to your body insecurities and what part of the body you are trying to hide.
Wearing tighter clothing will make you look smaller / wearing looser clothing will hide your figure: BOTH ARE FICTION!
We have all snarked on the woman with the skin tight pants severing her torso in two, causing her belly to hang over the waist band. Her panty line is visible, and she's wearing a thong. She may be a lovely size, but her too-tight clothes make her look fatter and as though she is clinging to her high school body.
Same with larger clothing. Your husband's sweats with a giant windbreaker only will make you look like the Michelin man. Large clothes confuse the eye as to what is fabric and what is flesh. The eye will see it all as flesh, and you suddenly look wider, hippier, saggier than you truly are. Yes that puffer coat/chunky turtleneck tunic/baggy fleece may be comfortable, but couldn't you find equal comfort in something that is your correct size and flattering to your shape?
Clothing should skim some curves, never be a "second skin," never totally hang away from the body. If you wear a tight top, compliment it with wide leg trousers. A pencil skirt looks best with a chunkier knit top or a tailored blouse that skims some areas and floats away from others. Balancing your outfit will flatter your figure the best.
Creases down the from of trousers make the leg look longer and often slimmer: TRUTH
Not sure why this optical illusion works better than others, but it surely does! A seam down the front of the pant leg, a crisp crease in trousers, jeans that are faded on the front of the thigh, gradually getting darker at the side seams - all of these effects make the leg look slimmer and longer. Those with slim legs should avoid these looks because it emphasizes so well, you often look top heavy.
Along these lines - patch pockets and applique on the thigh and crotch area can shorten and widen your body. The detail distracts the eye, causing it to stop at the thigh area and not continuing down to the ankle.
Shoes should always match your trousers: FICTION
Okay, it helps continue that elongated leg and can be slimming, flattering, and very polished looking. However shoes are a great way to express your personality. A great pointy red toe peeking out of charcoal trousers adds whimsy to a stuffy suit. Jeans with a fabulous snakeskin boot can look smashing.
If you are looking to elongate and slim, a pointy toe or elongated toe box is best. The slim line of the shoe is flattering, sticks out enough from the pant leg to make you look balanced - not top heavy. Also, shoes make an outfit. Basic pants and top become wow with the right footwear. Shoes and accessories can make any outfit look amazing and make you look pulled together and gorgeous.
Every woman needs a black skirt in her wardrobe: FICTION
There have been books written about the necessity of a black skirt in a woman's wardrobe. It seems like a staple, possibly one I would have on my list.
However I haven't worn a black skirt in four years. I own one, but I rarely wear it. Why do I need to? We don't live in the age or culture where all black is necessary for a funeral (and if it is necessary, I have a black dress). Women can been seen with respect when wearing pants in the workplace. Skirts require specific shoes, worrying about slips, hose, how to bend to pick up a pen off the floor. And most of all, black skirts are often unflattering.
A white top, tan legs and a black skirt causes a void in the look. It cuts the body into thirds. It confuses the eye, and not in a good way. Black does this, though navy and charcoal and dark brown do not. I don't know the science behind that, but it happens.
Black pants? A must have. Dress up, dress down, cocktail party or job interview in black pants. But black skirt? Only if you love skirts, you love black and you feel confident about your body from the belly button down. Otherwise I would go with a nice gray or brown.
You need to wear hose with a skirt: FICTION
I only own one pair of stockings. They are for conservative religious events and job interviews where I think a skirt may give a better effect. I have not worn a pair of stocking/pantyhose/sheers/etc. since 1999.
A see-through thin layer of synthetic fibers will not keep you warmer in the winter. They shouldn't make your legs darker, because Suntan hose on Ivory woman is really dated and tacky. The sheen of panty hose is false and not in tune with the fashions from the past... eight years or so. Hose should usually be worn only by people whose jobs, religion or culture dictate so. Anyone else - it's a fashion travesty. If your skin is properly shaved and moisturized, you won't look gross or indecent. Celebrities don't wear stockings. Fashionistas don't wear stockings. People under the age of 60 should not wear stockings. Tights with boots or patterned hose with a fabu Little Black Dress are different stories....
