What I Am Currently Using

So Summer has arrived. I can tell by the perspiration, the breakouts, the visible pores and the unruly hair. What am I using lately to keep me looking as good as possible?

BioSilk
Okay, I have raved about this before but I need to again. Go out, get yourself the tiniest bottle you can find, that’s all you will need for a long while. I put this on wet hair and allow to air dry for piecey waves. I apply it to straightened hair for shine and frizz reduction. I twirl it around curls on curly days for definition and shine. Then the leftover that I emulsified in my hands is rubbed into cuticles and my elbows for soft moisture. What other hair product is as good for your skin as it is for your tresses? I bought mine at Trade Secret, but it is sold at most salons and beauty supply stores.

Purpose Gentle Cleansing Wash
Used with a face brush, this really cleans my skin well at night without drying it out. The brush helps with exfoliation and gutting out those enlarged pores. It doesn't irritate my eyes, even if my contacts are in and it removes crazy makeup like long-wearing lipstick and liquid eyeliner.

The Body Shop Vitamin C Face Wash
So the A/C is acting up and I wake up coated in sweat. I go to the gym right when I wake and come home with a salty face. Whatever the reason, if I have to wash my face in the morning as well as at night, this is a great soap-free cream cleanser that removes the sweat or dirt but not the essential oils.

Revlon ColorStay Eyeshadow
Wow! Just tried this out on a whim because I ran out of my ivory shadow. This quad holds four very wearable colors that look great together or alone. Just a hint of shimmer so totally work appropriate. They are cool neutrals, so they don’t look too yellow or warm on my skin – compliment my hint of tan. And they DO stay! I have seasonal allergies that cause me to unconsciously rub my eyes and have my eyes water. After a day of sneezing, rubbing and tearing I still have a beautifully shadowed lid. Love it!

The Body Shop’s Hemp Lip Balm
This has the most interesting scent – not patchouli, not pot/hemp. Slightly sweet, slightly woodsy, and mild enough that it doesn’t make me want to eat my lips. It moisturizes, keeps my lips supple but is light enough that I can apply Lipcolor over it without it disappearing on me. I am one of those who have chapped lips year-round and this stuff is great for keeping it at bay.

Bare Escentuals Foundation, Concealer and Warmth
For summer I have switched from Fairly Light foundation to Light. I have kept with the Bisque all-purpose minerals and use it as foundation (applied with flat brush) and have begun using Warmth again as a very natural looking bronzer/face color. For the foundation and Warmth, I use Sephora’s Bronzer Brush – densely packed and soft enough to buff the minerals beautifully, leaving no streaks. I love this mineral makeup because it really does stay on all day – through sweat and rain and rubbing and everything else. It looks very natural – my freckles peek out but my dark circles and redness on the cheeks and under the nose are camouflaged.

Dove Energy Glow Daily Moisturizer With Self Tanners
I love this stuff. The smell is not too strong (I can’t deal with self tanners because of the stench) and it does moisturize the skin nicely. I got a free sample in the mail because I filled out something at some time, and liked it enough that I went out and bought a whole bottle!

Physician’s Formula Magical Mosaics Bronzer
I can’t remember where I read a review about this – some fabulous beauty blog. Well based on this random review I went to Target and picked this stuff up. My other bronzers had run out, looked fake or where too glitzy for day use. I like this one because I can control the color – use all sides for a dark color with shimmer, use only one side of the palette if I want it lighter or matte. The price is good and the color is natural. No complaints!

Suave Professionals Healthy Curls Line
This stuff is supposed to be equivalent to Redken. I have not used the Redken line, but I must say I adore this Suave stuff! The products are less than $2 each at my local Target. The smell is a bit herbal and fresh, it doesn’t strip my color and leaves my hair clean and bouncy but not frizzy. I rarely use mousse because I think it causes either crunchy curls or frizz, but this product leaves my hair still soft, not frizzy, but in control.

The Body Shop Special Edition Bronzing Powder
It’s new, it has a pretty bronze container and an imprint of the sun on the product. I already own a ton of bronzers, but what the heck, I’ll try this one too. So glad I did! The color is gorgeous, it layers nicely, is a great natural matte finish and just looks like color, not makeup.

Frizz Ease Dream Curls Perfector
This stuff ROCKS! I tried it on damp hair and ended up with messy beachy waves. Not horrible, will be in my bag for my next trip to the shore. When I tried it on dry hair I fell in love. I remember in high school when I had the curly bob with the mall bangs I used to use a curling spray from L’Oreal Studio Line. I could put it on dry hair and it would spring back my crunchy gelled curls giving them plastic shine, a trendy smell and more crunch for my buck. Dream Curls does not make the hair crunchy, plastic or overly shiny. It just gives some bounce to hair at the end of the day. I have it in my office, spritz it on if I am planning on going to dinner or for drinks after works – totally revitalizes my soft curls and waves and looks natural! Good stuff!

Degree Ultra Clear Deodorant (Picture Not Available, it’s a lighter green than the traditional container)
Okay, the ad says it’s black dress approved. I don’t agree, even though it’s clear I do get little bits of whiteness – how can you not with a stick deodorant? Besides that, the stuff keeps me very dry. It doesn’t have an intense deodorant or powdery scent (I usually use the “fresh” scents) and doesn’t irritate (in the summer I often get sensitive skin under my arms). In the winter I was happy with Dove, but come summer I need a bit more assistance. This does the job!

Neutrogena Advanced Solutions At Home MicroDermabrasion System
My sister bought this and decided she didn’t like it so she gave it to me. Two spongy discs, a base that could double as a vibrator and a tub of grainy stuff. What the heck, it’s free and it’s skincare. I love free skincare! Let’s play! Well the first time it didn’t seem to do much but make my face feel very clean and almost raw. I waited a day and did it again and the next day at work I felt as though my skin was burning around my lips. I decided to drop down to once a week max, and on a Sunday morning so I have time to heal. Well I am ready to buy my second tub and my skin can’t stop thanking me. My pores look smaller, I have less blackheads and I think my skin looks…. More pliable. Softer. Maybe it’s wishful thinking but I am pleased enough to spend more on this product!

L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara
I was reading InStyle and they raided Evangeline Lilly’s (from LOST) makeup bag. I was psyched because she seems to be a big fan of The Body Shop like me. Then I saw she wears Voluminous and I remembered I loved this mascara back in college. It held up to nights of dancing, sweating and having pitchers of beer tossed on my head (ah, the elegant days of being in a sorority). It made my lashes nice and thick, and I like thick better than I like soft and separated. So when my MAC X mascara ran out, I headed to CVS and bought a tube of this old standby. SO GOOD! I think it is equivalent to Dior Addict mascara, but without the crazy price tag. I don’t wear waterproof (breaks your lashes) but this product holds up to sweat, allergy eyes and rubbing very nicely.

Thursday

No pictures. Sorry folks, I was running late again and really, this outfit is NOT worth a picture.

Wednesday

Black stretch v-neck sweater from Banana Republic. Denim trousers from Ann Taylor. Pewter leather braided belt from Target. Silver cuff bracelet. Black leather heeled sandals from Target as well.

Hair is dirty. I woke up early, but got distracted by several emails and blogs and ended up having 10 minutes to get ready. I took a round brush and dryer to already dry hair to smooth it and give it shape. A small drop of BioSilk to make it look less fried.

Eyes were really bothering me last night and today. Chose to wear my glasses instead. To make my eyes pop out, I did a smoky eye - The Body Shop's Granite on the lid, Soft Black along the lash lines and the crease. Two coats of L'Oreal Voluminous mascara to curled lashes. Bare Minerals foundation, concealer and Warmth. On lips is Sally Hansen's Diamond Lipgloss in Royal Romance.

Tuesday

Look familiar? Yeppers, wore this same thing on Friday. I didn't go to work on Friday, the only people who saw me in this dress were the people at the party I attended. I HIGHLY doubt I will run across any of those people today, so that means I can wear it to work looking like new!

Dress was previously mentioned as being by Rebecca London. After looking it up on the Nordstrom website to show off to a friend on IM, I realized the dress is by London Times/Maggie London. Sorry Maggie! Under it to flash less cleavage is a black camisole from Body By vicoria/Victoria's Secret. Same gold chain from Express, same gold bangles from Claire's. This time new black leather heeled sandals from Target as that my old ones are trashed.

Hair looks a bit strange, you must keep in mind that it has been hideous rain and humidity the past several days along the Eastern Seaboard. I didn't want to pass a single comb or brush through my hair for fear of frizz, so instead I look a bit messy. Showered, applied a good mound of Suave/Redken curling mousse, allowed to air dry half way, then used a diffuser on the rest. then added a bit of BioSilk to reduce the chance of frizz.

Makeup was Bare Minerals foundation, concealer and Warmth, the same Revlon shadow collection as Monday, applied in the same manner. Two coats of L'Oreal Voluminous mascara in black. On lips is Sally Hansen's Diamond Lipgloss in Royal Romance.

Wardrobe Essentials – Your Undergarments

A gorgeous designer dress in your size and your best color. The perfect bracelet and earrings to compliment it. Fabulous shoes that make your legs look a mile long. Your hair is being very good to you – thick, shiny and manageable. Not a blemish on your peaches and cream complexion. Your trips to the gym have paid off – you are looking firm and fabulous. Then why do you look so discombobulated?
Most likely you have the wrong foundation garments under that designer dress. Nothing can ruin your look faster than the wrong undergarments. Ill fitting bra or visible panty lines will take a costly dress and make it look as though it was yanked out of a bargain bin. You may exude class and taste, but with the wrong underpinnings you can look like a gum smacking teen in desperate need of charm school.

All About the Bra
First things first – get yourself fitted. You read it in the magazines, you hear it on Oprah; most women in America are wearing the wrong size bra. This is a good excuse to venture into that high-end department store or lingerie boutique. No offense to Victoria’s Secret, they provide wonderful training however they have quick turnover of part-time salespeople resulting in a woman wielding a tape measure who may have only sold bras for a week. Bra salespeople in boutiques and higher end department stores are heavily trained and often have years of experience under their belt. Even if you cannot afford a single pair of panties in these shops, walk in with your head held high, your shoulders back and ask for a bra fitting.

Once you have been fitted and sized, you still must try on the bras before you buy them. Just as a size 10 jean in The Gap fits differently from a size 10 jean at Express (or from another size 10 at the same store) so it is with bras. To endure an hour of bra fitting, make sure you have scheduled the time and have properly fed, hydrated and rested yourself. No one enjoys bra shopping, but with the right preparation, it can be less horrible. Ensure you are wearing or bringing a top that would be worn over the type of bra you are planning on purchasing. This being said, what types of bras are needed in your wardrobe?

The Tee Shirt Bra – This is a bra that is practically invisible under thin knits. The bra should have comfortable straps, a smooth satin or microfiber texture that does not cling (nor does it shine and shimmer through tee shirts) to knits and fully covers the bust, reducing the chance of the dreaded Quad Boob. This bra should lift, separate but be as comfy as your current Lazy Day or Weekend Bra. In fact, toss that ratty stretched out item and replace it with two tee shirt bras. Your figure will thank you.

The Low Cut Bra – This bra is for your dresses and tops with a lower neckline. Often made of scalloped lace, this bra still supports, but is cut lower in the center at the cleavage line. I do not recommend demi bras for this purpose – unless you are very small busted demi bras can often change the shape of the breast, making it top heavy or look cut across the center. A bra can provide great shape, good coverage and plenty of lift while still working under lower cut tops. I have found much success with Chantelle and Wacoal brands for well-cut bras.

The Convertible Bra – Racer back tank? Halter dress? There is NEVER a reason to have your bra strap showing. Women of fashion NEVER EVER have their bras showing. Think of celebrities with class – Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Isabella Rosalini, Condoleezza Rice, Diane Sawyer. Would you EVER see these women’s bra straps? I think not. The way they are able to wear backless gowns, halter dresses, one-shouldered sweaters and racer back tops is due to convertible bras. These bras have special straps that can be reconfigured in a multitude of ways. Frederick’s of Hollywood is a great company for larger-busted women. They have convertible bras from A to F cups.

The Clear Strap Bra – A clear strap does not mean it is invisible, so don’t attempt to wear it in place of your convertible bra. This bra is for those garments where just a hint of strap may be seen (sheer tops, wider v-necks, crocheted or lace straps). Clear straps adhere to the skin a bit so will stay in place if the garment requires the straps to be a bit wider set for a certain neckline. Again, do not confuse clear with invisible. Clear straps are noticeable to EVERYONE and look positively tacky when visible. Another thing to consider – clear straps pick up the light – you might as well wear a white bra at a nightclub. While on the subject of straps – the rhinestone, bejeweled and colored clear straps are not anything a fashionista or woman of class would have in her wardrobe. If your garment doesn’t come properly adorned, invest in a Bedazzler, not a bedazzled set of bra straps.

The Strapless Bra – No matter how small you are, you still need a strapless bra. If you are over the age of 18, it is tacky and classless to go without a bra. If you are an A or a small B the shelf bras in some tops may be enough, but if you are larger than that, going without a bra ruins the feminine line of your figure and makes your breasts look like fatty tissue, not ladylike curves.

Unlike other bras, strapless bras often work if they are a size larger (if you usually wear a C consider buying a D). Strapless bras are often molded and that firm shape may not allow for the real shape of your breasts, causing a smooshed look or spillage from the top of the bra. No bra should make your breasts look like anything other than round and soft. Like the tee shirt bra, this bra should not be shiny, should not cling and should be near invisible under clothes. It’s best to buy your first strapless bra in a color as close to your skin tone as possible. A black strapless bra is a good choice as well – strapless garments often slip down a bit throughout the day and it’s better to have that little bit of bra showing to be as close to your garment color as possible (or as non-underwear looking as possible).

As with any other bra, a strapless bra serves no purpose if it doesn’t lift and separate. Try a top on over the bra. If it doesn’t hold you up, it goes back on the rack.

The Specialty Bra - Be it backless, tape, a certain color... if you buy the garment you must buy the proper undergarment. If you can't justify the cost for a speciality bra, then you should reconsider purchasing the garment.

The Sports Bra – Sports bras are a necessity, no matter your size. They are breathable, they have elasticity, but compression to keep your breasts from painfully bouncing during aerobic activity, and they hold up better after repeated washings. For smaller breasted women, any style that is comfortable is appropriate. For larger busted women, consider the shaped bras. They look more like traditional bras and less like tank tops. They will keep your breasts separated (looking less like fatty tissue) but will still provide the security and compression of a traditional sports bra. Natori and Champion have good versions of this style.

Even if this sports bra lifts and separates, it is NEVER a replacement for an everyday bra. There ARE bras out there that can be supportive AND comfortable. Bras may be expensive, but if you buy well fitting ones and care for them properly (hand wash or use a lingerie bag on the gentle cycle and line dry) they will provide you years of supportive wear.

The Dreaded Panty Line
You don;’t have to go commando or switch to thongs to get rid of VPL (visible panty line). You just need to change your way of thinking and add variety to your current collection.

Boyshorts – Boyshorts are a cute and comfortable way to reduce VPL. Many have lace inserts at the leg opening, eliminating the heavy seam that shows under garments. Women with larger rears or hips often find these panties more flattering as well as comfortable than traditional briefs or bikinis. As with bras, invest in several pairs that match your skin tone as closely as possible – these will disappear under light colored bottoms and will be less risqué if by chance a hint of fabric shows when you sit or bend over.

Microfiber – There are panties out there that say they reduce VPL, and there are ones that actually do the trick. Often the traditionally cut underwear that has the least amount of VPL are those made of microfiber. Full of stretch and able to create a very thin and flat seam, microfiber has become a fabric of choice for many underpinnings. They wash wear, wear well, stretch in every direction and often become invisible under knits and other VPL-encouraging fabrics. They are so comfortable, you may wish to replace your granny panties with these. In fact, do this. There is no place for baggy, stained, torn and unflattering underwear in a fashionista’s wardrobe, no matter how glum the day, how baggy the sweatpants or what time of the month it may be.

Workout Briefs - Exactly what they sound like, workout briefs don't ride up, they don't bind, they move with you. They are made of a breathable fabric and are even better if they are moisture-wicking. You should have at least three pairs of these for all activities that cause you to stretch, sweat and be active. Your body will thank you.

Spanx – Thank goodness for Spanx. This brand of control garments was made by a woman, considering a woman’s needs. The line began selling footless pantyhose – a great product to have a smooth line under pants and long skirts. The line now carries all types of control garments, camisoles, pants and other garments with built-in control and even casual bras. If you desire a tool to help tuck your tummy and master your thighs, this could be the brand for you. My favorite product is Higher Power – a garment that starts right below the bra and ends mid-thigh. There is no binding, no cramping often caused by too-tight of control garments. Having the garment start at the rib cage eliminates the “muffin-top” that happens when a waistband is too tight and the flash pours over.

I am not saying you must buy Spanx and no other brand. I have control garments from a plethora of companies. Just ensure that your purchase is comfortable for at least eight hours, it does not cut into your waist, your bum or your thighs, it is invisible under your clothing (nothing less attractive then boning showing through a knit dress), it doesn’t cause a “muffin top,” and it doesn’t create the “sausage effect” (so tight and binding that your torso is tight, round and firm, as though it is encased like sausage). Invest in one as close to your skin tone as possible, and if you desire a second one, consider black for the same reason that black is great for a strapless bra.

Sex Kitten Panties – Every woman is sexy, and nothing makes a woman feel more amazing than a fabulous pair of panties. Lace, silk, leopard print, fire engine red, or sleek black, there should be a minimum of two pairs (but should be more like six at least) in your wardrobe. These are to be worn under power suits, little black dresses, your favorite jeans or all by themselves. It is your little secret that helps you stand taller and walk with a bit more swing in your step. If you can, invest in a matching or complimenting bra. Nothing is more luxurious than a matching set. Treat yourself on your birthday, after a promotion and especially after a breakup with a great set of lingerie. Each time you put it on you will be reminded of how smart, sexy and special you are.

Final Points:

  • Your bra should NEVER be visible. A bra is not a top or part of a top. Designers may show tops that look like bras, but that does not mean you bra can peek out from the scoop neck of a tank, that the back can be seen on a string-tied camisole, that a traditional bra can be worn with a halter or racerback top. it doesn't matter what 'It Girl' has worn it on the cover of US magazine; when you become a millionaire you may wear what you wish. Until then, dress to be appreciated, respected and taken seriously. That means bras are kept under wraps.
  • The same holds true for underwear. If your pants are low rise, so should your underwear. Singers may flash bits of thong in videos, but that doesn't mean it is street appropriate. Undergarments are meant to be kept under wraps. Their job is to cover, smooth and be discreet.
  • If it is falling apart, TOSS IT. Bras should never be resewn, safety pinned or held together in a way that wasn't part of the original bra pattern. Same with underwear - if it is stained, torn, stretched out or just plain old, it must be discarded. Just as sexy lingerie makes you feel better about yourself, raggedy lingerie will only make you feel bummy.
  • VPL is not acceptable. It doesn't make your butt look better, it is not sexy and it IS visible to everyone, be it jeans or black pants or a skirt. Well-fitting underwear will make your rear look more shapely, your clothing hang better and you look far more elegant.
  • If your bra is cutting your breast in half or making you look smooshed/conical/droopy, it is either the wrong size or the wrong style. Your breasts are beautiful, round and soft. Your bra should accentuate your shape providing natural looking lift and separation while keeping a flattering shape.

Tuesday’s Tip: Humidity and You

If you live on the Eastern Seaboard, the past week has left you feeling a bit like a wet mop. If it isn’t raining cats and dogs, the air is thick with humidity. This weather may be delightful for the roses and hydrangeas, but wreaks havoc on the beauty rituals of us women. How can you live in a humid or rainy climate and still look fabulous?

Try Air Drying
You spend all morning in front of the mirror, ceramic straightening iron in one hand, silicone anti-frizz product in the other. You yank, comb, smooth and slick your hair as straight as a board and then head outside and your hair stands on end. Little fuzzies appear everywhere, a cowlick you never before had sprouts up in the front of your hair and either you lose all shine or look like an oil slick. If you curl your hair, you diffuse, again pull out the silicone products, and even try to control curl with an iron to no avail. You walk outside and suddenly look like a member of Bon Jovi circa 1986.

Why waste the time and electricity? Try letting you hair air dry, if at least for a bit. I know it’s a scary thought – try it the first time after work or on a weekend where if the final result is horrific you can hide it under a scarf or hat. After washing and conditioning with a frizz-reducing set of products, apply a styling lotion, a serum or some product that does not have alcohol in it (alcohol will only exasperate the frizz problem), scrunch it a bit if you have the least bit of wave and let it run it’s course. The look may be a bit more casual/beachy but it will be more consistent when it interacts with the air outside.

Tone Down The Makeup
When you apply a lot of foundation, concealer and powder and head outside, it all gets sticky and melts away. You feel icky, you keep applying powder to combat the meltdown and the sweat and end the day looking cakey and false.

Consider switching to a tinted moisturizer – one less layer to your face and less color to smear over the hours. Apply it first, then dab on concealer with a brush. Using a brush add less oils to your face, reducing meltdown (even if you wash your hands, applying makeup with your fingers adds oils and spreads oils, good for the winter and even application, bad on humid days). Use a touch of loose translucent powder – loose powder doesn’t have the oils that pressed powder does (something has to keep that stuff caked together!). Throughout the day, instead of applying more powder, invest in some blotting tissues. I have a pack from Clean and Clear that I picked up at Target – great price and a complexion savior (the less makeup on your face, the less chance for breakouts).

If you must have great coverage (special event, pictures being taken, etc.) consider mineral makeup. I have survived every summer for three years thanks to Bare Minerals (can be bought via QVC or Sephora). There are now variations sold by major brands at your local drug store and other mineral brands that are available through specialty stores and online boutiques. Mineral makeup seems to hold up better than traditional cosmetics. It is also less likely to clog pores and cause breakouts. Just know a little goes a long way so use a light hand!

It’s All In The Fabric
Hold off on the linen, the 100% cotton and the heavy knits. These fabrics will crease, show moisture (sweat, dampness from jumping puddles, rain splattering on your shoulders) and will end up looking like a crumpled paper bag by the end of the day. Cotton and heavy knits hold the tiniest bit of moisture, leaving you feeling soggy and gross after a short period of time.
Come the humid days I reach for matte jersey. Matte jersey, also called travel knit or slink knit is a synthetic fabric with a matte texture and a bit of stretch. This fabric moves in the breeze, doesn’t cling to the skin and handles a trip in the gentle cycle of your machine. It doesn’t show perspiration or rainfall and mixes nicely with knits, silks, and many other fabrics. Invest in some lightweight dresses than can go from work to a backyard barbecue with ease. Matte jersey shells can be paired with suits, capris or a lightweight skirt. I have a set – cardigan, shell, knee-length skirt and gauchos all in black. I can mix and match for any occasion and know I will end the day wrinkle free. Currently Ann Taylor has a few simple pieces in matte jersey; I have found pieces in most department stores and specialty stores like The Limited, Chico’s, J. Jill and Banana Republic.

Wear Weather-Appropriate Shoes
Nothing will ruin your day faster than stepping in a puddle wearing your new silk heels. Plan accordingly. I invest in a few pairs of sandals from discount retailers like Target and DSW just for these days. Ankle straps and thong styles will stay on better even if the footbed gets wet from a splash. By paying less you feel less pain when the shoes do get wet. Additionally cheaper leather seems to handle more wear and tear without affecting it’s look. My black leather heeled sandals from Target have been in many puddles, muddy yards and rain storms and still look great. For $16.99 I can handle it if they have worn out come Labor Day.

Monday

What, no Sunday? Sunday I went to Target for a quick trip, but otherwise spent the day at home cleaning, cooking and being a domestic goddess. This means i wore a pair of Gap lowrise bootcut jeans, a vintage tee shirt from Goodwill and a pair of flip flops from J. Crew.

So today I was back to work and had to look presentable. Black cap-sleeved v-neck sweater from Ann Taylor Loft, ivory fainly ribbed trousers from Ann Taylor, stand of pearls looped twice from the Limited, black knotted leather salndals (broke my old Mossimo ones, these are a good replacement - look just like the ones from Steve Madden this Spring/Summer) from Target.

Hair is curly because the weather is disgusting - humid, hot and raining cats and dogs. I put in a ton of mousse (Suave/Redken brand for curly hair) and dried with a diffuser. Then curled certain pieces.

Makeup is Bare Minerals concealer, foundation and warmth. On eyes is a set of four shadows fromt he Revlon Colorstay collection - I don't recall the name offhand but it's an ivory, khaki, olive and brown. I used the ivory on the browbone and inner corners of the eyes. The khaki was on the lid, the brown along the lash line and a bit in the crease. Then two coats of black mascara. On the lips is Sally Hansen's Diamond Lipcolor in Royal Romance.

Oh, and as a little treat, thought you should see how I start the day. This is a picture of me at 5:45 this morning. Ah, I LOVE makeup!!! Isn't it amazing? I just want to run around the world and apply foundation to all the fellow ruddy faced girls with allergy circles under their eyes and shiny foreheads!!!

Saturday

So this outfit is a bit of a lie. I had it on, took my picture, and then decided to change last minute. Same top, but switched to a breast-length necklace of seaglass and silver wire and my olive cargo skirt from J. Crew with black flip flops from J. Crew with a slightly stacked heel. It was just too hot to wear pants!

This outfit is a black scoop tee from American Apparel, turquoise necklace from Target and ivory sueded cotton bootcut pants from Ann Taylor.

Hair is straight. Washed with Suave/Biolage shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. Liberal amount of Sexy Straight Hair balm and some Pantene Thickening Spray to wet hair. hair dried with ionic dryer and boar bristle round brush, then smoothed with straightening iron to ward off humidity.

Makeup is Bare Minerals foundation and Warmth, on eyes is The Body Shop's shadow in Fawn Pearl on the lids, some Clinique Snow in the inner corners. Two coats of L'Oreal Voluminous mascara on Shu Eumura lashes, a bit of the same brown as my brow powder (maybelline) around lash line. On lips is Sally Hansen's Diamon Lipgloss in Royal Romance.

This evening we went to a little hole in the wall Mexican place with a couple we are good friends with. Phenomenal food. Afterwards we went to a popular watering hole in our neighborhood for a couple games of pool, chatting with friends outside on the terrace, drinking beer. Nice casual night and appropriate outfit!

Friday

Another dress! Dresses are so perfect for summer - they are breezy, easy to slip on, easy to pack and I adore matte jersey as that it doesn't wrinkle and can be thrown in the gentle cycle of the washer! This one is from Rebecca London. Black with a teal and green pattern. Surplice front and back, side shirring. Under it I have a black Body By Victoria camisole from Victoria's Secret. Long gold chain from Express. Gold thin bangles from Claire's. Black leather thong heels from Mossimo for Target.

Hair is curly - it was allowed to air dry with some of the Suave/Redken curly hair mousse in it. Then I hit the curling iron to some pieces in the front and used a barette to hold back the bangs to the side.

Makeup is Bare Minerals foundation, concealer, Mineral Veil and Warmth. On the eyes are The Body Shop's Simmer Cubes in Warm and L'Oreal Voluminous mascara in black. On lips is The Body Shop's Sheer Lipcolor in Sheer Caramel and Sally Hansen's Diamond Lipgloss in Royal Romance.

The day was hot hot hot and terribly humid - rain lingered in the clouds but never fell. This was the best way to look pulled together though I was sweating my tush off.

Thursday

I hate Thursdays. I have a noon working lunch, a 1:30 train the trainer session, a 3:00 meeting with a sub team and a 4:00 conference call. I want to die. Add to this an upset stomach and not enough sleep and you have a very cranky Dilly.

Anyway, this is not a bitch session, let me discuss the outfit. Boy the dress did NOT photograph well. It's a matte jersey dress from Jones New York. V-neck and back, fit and flare, great drape and a cummerband-like belt that ties in back. Super comfy, great for travel, and on sale. With it I have a gold chain necklace from Express and after the picture I put on a few thin gold bangles from Claire's. Black leather thong heels from Mossimo/Target.

Hair is finally washed after the 48-hour highlighting wait. Sexy Straight Hair balm and a bit of Pantene thickening spray on wet hair, hair dried with boar bristle round brush and ionic dryer, then some pieces straightened with my ceramic iron. Then I decided I wanted it a bit messy so I shook my head upside down and blasted pieces with Sebastian Shaper Spray. then finger combed it into a more sensible look.

makeup is Bare Minerals foundation and Warmth, The Body Shop Shimmer Cubes in Warm on the eyes (palest and darkest), two coats of black mascar and lips are The Body Shop's Beech lip liner covered with Sally Hansen's lipgloss in Champagne Toast.

Wednesday

Tough day. Up very late, until early morning due to a friend issue. Got up, showered (though couldn't wash the hair due to new highlights) and realized I felt like complete crap. Emailed work that I would be a bit late and took a 2 hour nap on the couch. Got up, got dressed and drove straight to Starbucks for a much needed caffiene fix. I felt as though I looked like complete crap, I was wearing my "safety outfit" which is polished but takes little thought or care. A guy whistled at me int he Starbucks parking lot so I felt far better. Isn't it funny how a skeeve can whistle at you on most days and you want to tell them to jerk off, but when you feel less than pretty it is the most wonderful sound in the world?

Black stretch v-neck from Banana Republic. Black trousers with seam down the front of the leg, from Ann Taylor. Black pumps from B.P./Nordstrom. Short pearl necklace from Monet, longer one from Limited.

Hair is dirty, pulled back with an accordion headband so I don't look like a bag lady.

Makeup is Bare Minerals foundation and Warmth, two coats of L'oreal Voluminous mascara on Shu Eumura curled lashes. I think a hint of Nars Orgasm ont he apples of the cheeks so I don't look like death warmed over. And my lips? the Body Shop's Beech lip liner with Goldie's Blossom lipgloss over it. Not too fancy, but enough to make me not look utterly craptastic in public. Oh, and large black plastic sunglasses when outside to cover the bags under my eyes.

So You Had a Bad Day

You woke up on the wrong side of the bed, you grappled with insomnia, you’re battling the flu or a hangover. Your hair just doesn’t want to cooperate and you’re PMSing. Your kid puked on your new suede mules and you had a power failure and the alarm didn’t go off on time. You hate your job and you wish you never had to step a foot out from under that downy comforter.

The day must continue. You have to go to work or that appointment. You’re tempted to head to the office still in your bunny slippers, hair not brushed and face not washed. You feel like crap, why even try putting an outfit together?

Because you need to. Looking like crap will only make you feel even worse. They always say that forcing yourself to smile makes you feel better, well forcing yourself to look presentable makes you feel better too. It is a little boost of confidence that lets you get through the day. If you look a mess, people that don’t even know you will perceive you as a mess. All that does is add additional stress and frustration to your already horrendous day. Here are some tips to look your best on those not so great days.

Take a Shower
A shower can do amazing things for the mood. The hot water massages your shoulder and neck alleviating head and body aches. Invest in a citrus scented shower gel or shampoo – the aromatherapy properties will brighten your spirits and the smell of many citrus fruits reduces nausea. A shower will help minimize puffy eyes and greasy Sick Day hair. I recommend the Body Shop’s Aromatherapy Body Washes in Bergamot (a unisex crisp, almost grassy citrus scent) or Mandarin and Aveda’s Rosemary Mint Shampoo. The world is much easier to face with a clean fresh smelling self.

Have a Safety Outfit
The last thing you want to do on a bad day is stand in front of your closet and try to figure out what to wear. The thought of it can cause you to crawl back into bed. If you have a safety outfit, you know you can rely on that in a pinch.

A safety outfit should be simple, comfortable and polished. For me I have a black refined knit v-neck and black trousers with a full leg and a hint of stretch. This outfit doesn’t wrinkle, it makes me look slim and sophisticated. Both pieces are in black; black is forgettable. When you have a bad day the last thing you want to do is draw attention to yourself. Choosing a neutral or dark outfit looks clean yet isn’t memorable. A monochromatic outfit makes dressing easy and often elongates the body (always helps to feel slim on a bad day). Ensure the pieces look great even if you gain 10 lbs. Nothing will ruin your mood more than pants that are too tight. This outfit should be appropriate for most occasions (work, church, doctor’s appointment, meeting with child’s teacher) and relatively seasonless (my outfit works year-round because of the color and fabric choices). Consider pants – they are more comfortable than skirts and more versatile. As for tops, a lightweight sweater hides a multitude of sins yet accentuates the positive (Nice neck? Attractive bustline? Consider a scoop or v-neck. Very slim? Consider a boat neck and a slimmer silhouette). As for shoes, comfort is key. Invest in a cute pair of ballet flats or city boots with a moderate heel. Though the important factor is comfort, the shoe should be in perfect condition – polished, well structured and without tears, scuffs, worn heels and the such.

Accessorize
No will notice red eyes and limp hair if you have a great accessory. A scarf or necklace can do wonders for the psyche and the monochromatic outfit. I rely on a strand of pearls – it’s not too flashy but with a totally black outfit, it goes from somber to chic. My friend has a Pucci scarf she got as a gift from an ex. The colors are delightful and a quick knot at the throat creates a festive look. She says every time she looks down, she sees the pretty colors and her mood brightens. The colors brighten her face as well. A jingly bracelet creates a cheery sound, even if you are down in the dumps. The flash of metal on your wrist adds interest to your outfit and is something to toy with when your mind wanders from lack of sleep.

Invest in Some Headbands
It hurts to think, your hair is aching, the last thing you want to do is pull out the dryer or the straightening iron. What you want to do is grab that pink terry scrunchie you have been holding on to since high school, throw it in a messy loop and head out the door. Just like a dreary outfit will bring you down, seeing your reflection with messy stringy hair will keep your mood in the dumps.

I love accordion headbands because they are cheap, they are narrow enough that they don’t need to match an outfit, and the shape gives lift to the hair. The look is sleek and polished. My coworker has fabric Alice bands – they hold back her thick straight hair and look sleek and mod and cover up a greasy hairline. A scarf can make a stylish and colorful headband and can also hide rats nests and a sicky-poo scalp. If you have short hair, a small barette can hold bangs to the side and make a messy do seem purposeful. Even if you just “do” your bangs or the front of your hair and pull the rest into a well-brushed ponytail, you will feel better than the Dreaded Scrunchie of Death look.

Add Fragrance
Your regular perfume can be positively disgusting to your nose when sick or hungover. Invest in a light body spray in a green or soft citrus scent. It will boost your mood, make you feel clean even though you feel all gross and sicky, and others will smell it and think positive thoughts. As previously mentioned, citrus and minty scents often ward off nausea – perfect when battling the flu, pregnancy or a hangover. I really like the "breathe" body sprays from Bath and Body Works - Energy is a crisp grassy scent, Delight is a soft sweet orangey fragrance.

Drink Water
Water will rehydrate you after a night of crying or blowing your nose. It helps flush out toxins, be they the viral or the vodka variety. It makes your skin look better, it fills your tummy so you don’t drown your sorrows in the vending machine and it causes frequent trips to the restroom, giving you a bit of exercise to alleviate cramps and muscle aches.

Remember you only get one chance to make a first impression. The day you show up to work in your bunny slipper and pink terry scrunchie may be the day that a hot new coworker starts, corporate comes for a visit or you have a semi-annual review with your supervisor. Dress for the best, even when you feel the worst.

Tuesday

Newly highlighted hair, and it's so hard to not wash it and make it look fabu. I decided to just hit it with the straightening iron after blowing it straight with a round brush. I swear it's not greasy, that's just the Sebastian Mud that hasn't fully dried.

Green stretch v-neck sweater from Banana Republic, denim trousers from Ann Taylor, gold necklaces from Express, gold bangles from Claire's. Tan thong heels from Mossimo. As I write this I have big black plastic sunglasses on my head from Target.

Makeup is Bare Minerals foundation in Light, Warmth for color, The Body Shop shimmer cubes in Warm on the eyes, two coats of black mascara on curled lashes and a touch of Champagne Toast lipgloss from Sally Hanson ont he lips. Once in the car on my mornign commute I put on The Body Shop's Sheer Lipcolor in Sheer Caramel with Goldie Lipgloss in Blossom over it.

Monday

Coral and white striped boatneck cotton sweater from Ann Taylor Loft - I snagged it this weekend for a cool $9.99. I swear it looks far cuter in person than in this picture. White jeans from Caslon. Tan leather heeled thongs from Mossimo. Silver cuff and hoops.

Hair is a masterpiece, again hard to see in the picture. You want to know why it looks so cool? because it KNOWS that it is getting cut this evening! I washed it, added my Suave/Redken curling mousse and put it up in a scrunchie while I got dressed. Then the power went out. I freaked out thinking I would have to go to work with wet hair. I continued dressing, put my makeup on in the half-light of 7am and living in the woods and by time my face and clothes were done and I grabbed a quick breakfast, the power was back on. I dried the semi-damp hair with a diffuser, then hit a large-barreled curling iron to certain unrfuly pieces and then brushed it out for a voluminous Brigitte Bardot sorta look that I felt fit the nautical outfit.

As for makeup, I went to Sephora this weekend and bought Bare Minerals foundation in Light. I felt that Fairly Light was too pale with the twinge of color I get even with all my sunscreen. Such a good purchase, the color totally matches my skin and looks far more natural. I didn't even need concealer with it. I also used Bare Minerals Warmth for color, a quick dash of nars Orgasm on the cheeks and Sally Hansen's Diamond Lipcolor in Champagne Toast on the lips. For eyes, only two coats of black mascara on curled lashes and a line of black Ultra Liner by Maybelline on the top lash line.

Saturday Wedding

Wedding starting at 6pm. Catholic church ceremony, though no full mass. Reception at a country club, but a casual one. Knowing the couple and the crowd, I figured a cotton sundress was totally appropriate.

Black and white print sundress from Adriana Appell. It's hard to see in the pictures, but the straps have two rings. My plan was to wear a clear strap or strapless bra so bra straps didn't show through the rings. Got home and found that my strapless and clear strapped bras wer both too high-cut for the dress and they showed. I chose instead a black knit bra from Donna Karan that has very thin cotton black straps - looks like spaghetti straps, not at all lingerie-like. I am TOTALLY against the bra strap showing, but I was in a bit of a pinch and I din't think it was too obvious. My hubby didn't even notice and he is always the first to notice things like exposed bra straps and panty lines.

Anyway, back to the outfit. For coverup, I have a black knit cocoon-like shrug from Target. Enough to keep me decent in the church and ward off chill. On the feet were the well-worn black leather thong heels from Mossimo. Silver hoops and silver bangle.

Hair was allowed to air dry on the drive to the mall to buy this dress, then when home I curled the whole thing with hot rollers and then brushed out for a side-swept sexy wavy look with body.

Makeup was Bare Minerals foundation, concealer and Warmth. On eyes was The Body Shop's shadow in Granite, touch of Soft Black in the crease and along the lash line and a thin line of Maybelline's Ultra Liner in black ont he top lash line. On lips was Sally Hansen's Diamond Lipcolor in Royal Romance.
