Monday

Black merino crewneck from Banana Republic, dark stretch denim pencil skirt from Gap, silver and leather necklace from Chico's, silver hoops and cuff bracelet, black round toe pumps from Jessica Simpson.

Hair was on its second day, just brushed out and a few parts that were bedheaddy were blown straight with the dryer and a round brush. Jonathan Dirt applied to the ends.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, concealer in W4-5, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the cheeks. Eyes was just a bit of ivory shadow on the inner corners, lashes curled and DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black applied. Maybelline Ultra Liner in black on top lash line and on lips is Revlon ColorGlide in Rum Radiance.

Sunday

The day started with a Christening for our friend's son and my husband is the Godfather.

Black dress with lime and turquoise pattern of matte jersey from London Times. Black round toe pumps from Jessica Simpson. White gold chain with turquoise glass disc from Italy, silver hoops and cuff bracelet. I took my turquoise pashmina for a cover as that it was a pretty warm spring day.

Hair was allowed to air dry with the Frizz Ease Dream Curls in it while I was at my morning yoga session. I then hit a few pieces with the curling iron and set with Sebastian Shaper hair spray.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the apples of the cheeks, eyes is the Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis - ivory in inner corners and along brow bone, khaki on lid, chocolate in crease and along lash lines. DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black on curled lashes. Lips is The Body Shop's Lipcolor in Clover.

After the Christening, there was a casual cookout at the parents' house. Our house was on the way, so we stopped by for a quick change as that we wouldn't be back home until late. Gray tank from Old Navy, brown striped v-neck top from Old Navy, my Gap Outlet patch-pocket dark jeans, brown stacked flops from J. Crew, silver pocket watch necklace from Ann Taylor Loft, silver chain from an Renaissance Festival booth, my silver hoops and cuff bracelet.

Makeup and hair were left the same.

After the cookout we had Book Club and headed right there. I think you can tell by the outdoors picture that though the weather was gorgeous, I was tuckered out from such a busy day.

Saturday

Started the day with yoga. Showered, added Frizz Ease DreamCurls to damp hair, scrunched and let dry while doing my Downward Dog. Wore a tee-shirt from the Susan Tedeschi 2006 tour, with black yoga pants from Pro Spirit at Target. On the face is nothing but moisturizer and eye cream. It was a cold and rainy day, I wore New Balance trainers and an L.L. Bean fleece in a purple-blue shade to get to class.

After yoga, I had a short period of time to get ready for a bridal shower.

I hit the weird places in my hair with the curling iron and set the whole thing with Sebastian Shaper Hair Spray.

Outfit is my ivory lace top from Banana Republic Outlet, with the original ivory satin ribbon at the waist. Nude spandex camisole from Limited underneath. Long strand of pearls from limited looped around neck. Patch pocket dark denim cotton jeans from Gap Outlet, black round-toe high-heel pumps from Jessica Simpson.

Makeup is Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, L'Oreal True match foundation in C3, concealer in W4-5, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the cheeks with Nars Orgasm blush over it. On eyes is the Shimmer Cubes in Warm from The Body Shop - peach on the lids, chocolate in the crease and along the lash lines. Lashes curled and DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black applied. On lips is The Body Shop's Sheer Lipcolor in Sheer Strawberry.

After the shower, went to dinner with friends and wore the same thing, reapplied the lips with Revlon ColorGlide Sheer in Sheer Burgundy.

Friday

Coral gauzy babydoll top from... some brand at Nordstrom (got last year). Patch-pocket jeans from gap Outlet, two coral chip glass necklaces from a boutique at Rehoboth Beach, teal suede wedges from Seychelles, silver hoops and silver cuff bracelet.

Hair was washed with Suave Professionals Sleek shampoo (very small amount at scalp), then ArTec Cherry bark color depositing shampoo, then Kiwi ColorReflect conditioner. Added FrizzEase Dream Curls to damp hair and a bit of Suave Professionals Get Curly mousse at the front. Let air dry most of the way, then used a diffuser for the rest and hit a few pieces with the curling iron and set with Sebastian Shaper Spray.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the apples of the cheeks, covered with Nars Orgasm blush. Eyes is the Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis - ivory in inner corners and along brow bone, olive on the lid, chocolate int he crease and along lash lines. DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black on curled lashes. On lips is The Body Shop's Sheer Lipcolor in Sheer Caramel.

Questions from the StatCounter

Another post answering some of the questions of women who Google...

What Necklace to Wear with a Wrap Dress?
Often with this style of dress, a necklace isn’t necessary because of the dress detail. The v-neck elongates the neck and gives a dramatic look on its own. I often pair a wrap dress with more dangly of earrings or hoops to continue that long look. However if you desire a necklace with a solid and simple wrap dress, a thin chain with simple pendant would be lovely, or switch it up with a long chain that goes past your rib cage or even navel. If you are an accessories maven, several strands of pearls in the neckline can be tres chic and sassy.

How to Hem Pants without Stitching?
I do NOT recommend this for long-term because it doesn’t look polished or chic, but I have been known to hold up a torn hem with Stitch Witchery. This and many similar products are a glue of sorts that will fuse two pieces of fabric together, often with heat from an iron. It doesn’t work on heavy fabrics like denim and wool, it ruins the line and gets too stiff with crepes and silks, and all in all looks messy but if you are in a pinch, it’s a great item to have on hand.

If you are not a seamstress, your local dry cleaners will usually hem pants for you for a very nominal price. This price will be less than buying new pants – a very real situation if you try to glue or staple your hems (yep, I have done that in a pinch too – try to get the staple right in the side seam so the staple isn’t showing and NEVER use this on fine fabrics!!).

What Heel Height for a Job Interview?
I think anything below 3” that is comfortable for you. I think a higher heel can be paired with pants for a very stylish yet professional look; with a skirt I recommend a more conservative yet flattering heel height like between 1 and 2.5 inches.

As a woman, we have the option to wear either a skirt or pants for an interview. I prefer pants because they make me feel confident and secure and strong. I pair pants with a feminine heel to show that I am tough, but have a personality. If I were to wear a skirt, I would pair it with very sensible simple leather pumps so I didn’t look to frivolous.

Can You Wear Teal Blue and Gold Shoes with a Black Dress?
Oooh, this is a toughie. No clear answer for this one. Now if your black dress is super simple like a sheath or a tube and the shoes are totally wild and funky and you maybe wear gold earrings and no other accessories then you could look very awesome. But if you pair it with a black dress with detail and some flounces and a gold bracelet and earrings and done hair… well then you will look confusing. Also are the shoes thin and delicate or chunky platforms? That can also make a difference. I am seeing teal and gold shoes with a navy dress… but it could be nice with a very simple simple black one.

Facial Bleach Turns My Hair Too Light
When I used to tan, I had that issue. And that’s when I stopped bleaching all together. Bleached hair does not disappear, it just becomes white or blonde. Do yourself a favor, invest in some Surgi-Cream or a different way to hide the hair – actually removing it. Modern-day depilatories for the face do not burn, smell awful or make the hair grow back stubbly. I use a cream by Sally Hansen bi-weekly on my face and have found it to be gentler, easier and less obvious than all my years with the pot of Jolene Cream Bleach.

Cashmere Sweater Ruined by Dry Cleaning?
Well first things first, cashmere doesn’t dry clean well. If you want your cashmere to last for years, you need to baby it. This is an item that really needs to be hand-washed. Invest in a quality wash for delicates and wash it in your (cleaned!) sink, not really twisting or rubbing too much. After washing, gently press out excess water, and lay on a towel to dry flat. This article explains the process in beautiful detail.

I have hidden lay-flat drying garments on the floor under my desk, on top of my refrigerator, and under my bed. You will be surprised where you will find space where it can dry in peace without being in the way.

I dry cleaned my cashmere pashmina, and now the coloring is uneven. There really isn’t a way to remedy the situation, you have to know that each time you go to the cleaners you have the chance of having your garment ruined. I had a gorgeous ivory suit bleached unevenly from the cleaners and items pressed in ways that have permanently ruined the drape.

Many items like wool and silk can actually be washed in the gentle cycle of your machine. Use a detergent made for delicates, do not over-stuff the washer, and let items hang or dry flat. The only items I send to the cleaners are suits, lined dresses and pants and anything with embellishment.

Thursday

Black cotton tank from Banana Republic, Denim trousers from Gap, Khaki canvas jacket from Mossimo for Target, black coral necklace from Mexico, silver cuff, balck round-toe high heeled pumps from Jessica Simpson.

Hair was washed with Artec color-depositing shampoo in Cherry Bark, then Kiwi conditioner. Sprayed in FrizzEase Dream Curls, and a bit of Suave Professionals Dream Curls mousse in the front. Allowed to air dry for about a half hour, then dried the rest with a diffuser, then used a curling iron on the pieces that looked rough.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, Nars Orgasm blush and a bit of Body Shop bronzer powder in light. Eyes is the Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in neutral - ivory in inner corners and along brow bone, olive on lid and along lower lash line, chocolate in crease. On lips is Revlon ColorGlide in Rum Radiance.

Wednesday

White stretch cotton tailored shirt from Ann Taylor, ivory and coral and brown tweed trousers from Ann Taylor, brown peep-toe pumps with wood heels from Maripe, silver cuff and hoops, white gold and diamond necklace from the hubby.

Hair was washed with the Suave Professionals Sleek shampoo and not conditioned because somehow I forgot. I planned on going curly so towel dried my hair and added FrizzEase Dream Curls and went to make breakfast and feed the dog. Came back to dry with the diffuser and well... after using Sleek shampoo and no conditioner the hair did NOT want to cooperate. I ended up drying it straight with a round brush and applying a bit of Jonathan Dirt to it for texture.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, Nars Orgasm blush, Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral - ivory in corners and brow bone, khaki on lid, chocolate in crease and along lash line. DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black on curled lashes, The Body Shop's Sheer Lipcolor in Sheer Caramel.

The Three-year Old Blush

Often we hate to spend when it comes to our looks. We are told even in beauty magazines that there are “steal” items that are equivalents to “splurge” pieces. Have you ever looked closely at those “Splurge vs. Steal” pages? More often than not, the cheaper item LOOKS cheaper.

This is not to say that you must pay top dollar to get quality. The point is that there is no reason to buy a cheap version of an expensive item; just buy a different item. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattering, but really imitation style is just that… an imitation and not the real thing. If you can only afford $30 for jeans, then buy the nicest, best-fitting and most flattering $30 jeans you can find. Embroidery, bedazzlement and appliqué will not make those $30 jeans look as though they are worth $230; they will just make your $30 jeans look cheap. Simplicity is key in one seeing style and not price tags.

That being said, there is something for saving up to buy good quality. Shown here are photographs of my beloved Nars blush in the shade of Orgasm. This is a blush that is raved about in every beauty magazine, and is always mentioned as being in the makeup bags of celebrities and fashionistas. I found it ridiculous to pay $25 for a BLUSH! I had perfectly lovely blushes I had bought from drugstores that gave me enough color to not resemble a corpse. Why in the world would I pay that much for such an unimportant makeup piece?

My 30th birthday rolled around. I felt the need to treat myself. I went on a mini-shopping spree at Sephora and bought this blush, a Shu Uemura lash curler (also often raved about in mags) and an expensive mascara. Why not use a new decade to see what the hype is all about.

Over two years later, here is the very same Nars Orgasm blush. No point in taking a picture of the lash curler, because it looks the same after two years of rigorous use (it too was worth the $ and the mascara was nice too). My point in showing this battered and beaten blush is that quality is really worth it. How many people can admit that after two years of almost daily wear, travel across the country and overseas, their blush is still in one piece and still has product left to use? My discount blushes often are crumbled or used up after six months, but this one has probably another year of life left in it. The lid may have broken off, but the mirror is still intact. The metal may be showing, but there is still plenty of great product left. And the color? The peachy-pink with just a hint of sparkle makes me look healthy without flushed, glowing without looking disco, and on the first day of wear was asked twice if I had lost weight.

$25. For you this may be dinner out with a friend, a new little top for Friday night, a couple drinks at happy hour, fresh flowers for your home. Excluding necessities in your life, think about the times that $25 has been spent… and then forgotten. Think of how you picked up a magazine, a candy bar and a new foundation that you really don’t need but saw in an ad and it’s on sale all within one grocery trip. Think of how you again forgot to pack your lunch and this is Day 3 that you are hitting up Subway instead of eating the food in your pantry. Think of how you don’t really need a new pair of shoes but your boss was a jerk today and Payless is right next to the bank and well they are only $22.99 so what’s the harm. Then think about how you don’t have the money for a haircut, a well-fitting pair of trousers or a blush that may make you look fresh, rested and really YOU.

Think about HOW you spend your money. Add up those Starbucks drinks, those snacks with your gas fill-up, your lunches on the run, your $9.99 tees from Target that are really pretty colors but just stacked up with your many other tees. Think of how many blushes you have bought below $10 and then have tossed because they weren’t right. You may be surprised at how much money you are spending on nothing.

This is not an advertisement for Nars, and really this color may be dreadful on your complexion. The point of this article is to really examine your life, your spending habits and your priorities. We often buy cheap in hopes that it looks expensive, we often buy disposable to fulfill a craving and not a need. We often complain about no money, forgetting about our eBay obsession or daily stop at Starbucks.

Try spending at least a week journaling all that you spend. When you go to the grocery store, go with a list and stick to it. Try shopping from your pantry and closet before heading to the mall or market. Consider dinner in – use the good china and light a few candles in place of a restaurant; it’s amazing how candles can make even spaghetti seem elegant. Take your lunch to work and if you are prone to hitting the vending machine at 3:30, prepare with a few snacks at your desk. The next time you are at Target and Wal-Mart buy what brought you there, and nothing more. Do not enter a store unless you have an agenda – stop using retail therapy as a social activity. You will be amazed at how much you buy that you didn’t even realize you picked up. You’ll soon see a little more money in your bank account, and after a month or so, the cravings for consumerism will diminish. Meals out will be treats, clothing bought will be necessary and perfect for your style, figure and needs and you just may have the money to invest in a great blush that will give you three years of happiness.

Monday

Can you tell that the bulb is out in this room? I had to get to work early for a meeting and the sun hadn't completely risen so the full-photo is a bit dark... but I have worn this outfit before so no biggie.

Ivory wool-blend Coin Pocket trousers from Ann Taylor Loft, ivory and black cheetah-print chiffon top with tuxedo ruffles from Banana Republic, nude spandex cami from Limited, short pearls from Monet, long pearls from Limited.

Hair is second day (allowed to air dry yesterday with a bit of Frizz Ease Dream Curls), a few pieces curled with iron and then whole thing got a bit of Jonathan Dirt for pieceyness.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on cheeks, Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral - Ivory on inner corners and brow bone, khaki on lid, chocolate in crease and along lash line. DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black on curled lashes, and on lips is The Body Shop's Sheer Lipcolor in Sheer Strawberry.

Saturday

St. Patrick's Day party at a friend's house. Happy to know I fit in this shirt again, I haven't worn it in over two years. Not so happy that the last time I wore it I must have spilled something on me and didn't get the shirt cleaned before having it sit in my closet for two years. Not so good. The spots were subtle enough that I think they weren't easily seen in the dim lighting of a party. My husband doesn't take the most flattering photos, but at least I was able to get a shot before we head out the door.

Emerald green silk shirt from Ann Taylor, dark denim patch-pocket jeans from Gap Outlet, black city boots from Impo, silver medium hoops (found the missing one when cleaning this weekend!), silver cuff.

Hair was second day, brushed out the weird places and hit them with the curling iron. I am liking this messy curly/wavy look my hair has been sporting - I think it's the added length that is letting it get this messy look.

Makeup is Smashbox Photo Finish primer, L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, concealer in W4-5, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on cheeks. On eyes, I used the Body Shop's Eye Shimmer in Emerald (a light green that is highly iridescent and can be quite bold over black shadow or liner) applied up to brow bone, a bit of the Body Shop's Soft Black shadow in the crease to add depth and intensify the green, lashes curled and DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black applied, then a line of Maybelline's Ultra Liner in Black on top lash line. On lips is Revlon ColorGlide Sheer in Sheer Burgundy, but I had brushed my teeth after applying so it wasn't too strongly shown at this point.

Friday

Friday I did not go to work. I was feeling a bit icky and very stressed from being behind in housework. I got sleep, I finished redecorating the bathroom, gave the house a good cleaning and then had one of my best friends and her new boyfriend over for a dinner and movie night. For that I wore my coral scoop-neck tee from Gap, my patch-pocket dark jeans from Gap Outlet, my two coral necklaces and my hair curly.

Thursday

Navy twill blazer from Talbots, turquoise ribbed tank from Caslon, faux turquoise necklace from Target, Curvy bootcut jeans from Gap, brown peep-toe pumps with wood heel from Maripe.

Hair is washed, conditioned and allowed to 80% air dry after being spritzed with FrizzEase Dream Curls. Rest dried with diffuser, then curling iron to unruly pieces and all set with Sebastian Shaper Spray.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, concealer in W4-5, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on apples of cheeks, then Nars Orgasm blush applied over it. Eyes is the Revlon ColorStay quad in Neutral - ivory in inner corners and along brow bone, khaki on lid. DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black on curled lashes and fine line of Maybelline Ultra Liner in Black on top lash line. On lips is The Body Shop's Liquid Lip Color in Sparkling Pink.

Wednesday

Green and white print jersey wrap dress from H&M, hot pink pointy pumps from NYLA, silver cuff bracelet.

Hair is second day, straightened with iron.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, Nars Orgasm blush, on eyes is Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral - the ivory in inner corners and along brow bone. DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black and Maybelline Ultra Liner in black on top lash line. On lips is Maybelline Wet Shine Diamonds in Glowing Glimmer.

Vendor Review - MetStyle Bags

MetStyle is a very cool company concept, offering professional bags for women that are feminine and stylish while still giving the owner the respect she deserves in the business room. This is a hard task for any company, to have all the features necessary for your laptop, writing supplies and lipgloss without being boring and bulky like the carry-all that came with your computer, but not frou-frou and frivolous. In this day and age we all need to carry around our gadgets; we should ahve the ability to do it with style and class.

I received the Champs Elysees Hand Bag (pictured) in the mail this week and boy am I impressed! Do not let the photograph on the website fool you into thinking this is a utilitarian piece. The dark purple quilting has a slightly iridescent satiny finish that is chic yet professional. The hardware is polished silver, the trim and handles a high-quality faux leather that has the flexibility and sheen of the real thing. I am petite with thicker arms and I found this bag comfortable in my hand or over my shoulder. My Dell D610 fits comfortably (and my husband’s larger 17” Dell just fit if no notepad or accessories were included) with my portable mouse, USB, Blackberry, digital camera, a slim notepad and a few goodies like gum, powder and lipstick. Inside compartments keep everything organized and the slim look doesn’t resemble a purse in any way. I love the dark plum shade – very subtle yet adding a bit of panache to the subdued business suit ensemble. My husband even liked it saying it “looks very Art Deco and classy.”

Prior to this bag, I was using a black microfiber laptop tote from the Michael Graves collection at Target. I found the Dell shoulder bag that my company gave me to bee too heavy, bulky and useless. Not just that, but it was hard to carry around with my petite frame. I purchased the Michael Graves tote because it was a more feminine shape, but professional enough for the toughest client. I found even that seemed to be too bulky for business meetings and travel and desired something smaller. Usually smaller pieces were just a sleeve with a strap with no room for accessories or personal effects, or else they were too girly (my clients would not appreciate a glossy pink croco bag with a tassel). I found appropriate bags online, but they were often way over $100 – not appropriate to my budget.

The bags from MetStyle are a good price for the quality, they achieve style without compromising your level of respect with your colleagues, and they are made to really accomplish all the tasks of a true business bag – hold the laptop, the legal pad, the pen, the computer accessories, the wallet and the lipstick and powder for lunchtime touch-ups. Visit the site and find a retailer near you to check out this great new brand!

Tuesday

This is the outfit I wore to the baby shower, just with different shoes. I spent the morning uploading clothes to my selling blog and next thing I knew it was almost time to leave.

Luckily I showered before getting online, and applied some FrizzEase Dram Curls to my hair and let it air dry almost completely. I used a diffuser to dry it the rest, and hit a few straight pieces with the curling iron. Turned my head upside down, hit my hair with a few sprays of Sebastian Shaper spray and was ready.

The outfit is a black short-sleeved scoopneck empire waist sweater from Old Navy, black wool blend coin-pocket trousers from Ann Taylor Loft, silver necklace from Ann Taylor Loft, silver cuff, black round toe pumps from Jessica Simpson.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the apples of the cheeks with Nars Orgasm blush applied over it. Lips is The Body Shop's Liquid Lip Color in 13 (pale shimmery pink). Eyes is my Maybelline ExpertWear shadow quad in Mocha Motion - the silvery white on inner corners and along brow bone, the silvery gray applied to the lids with my finger. Lashes curled and DiorShow Unlimited in black applied, and then a relatively thin line of Maybeliine UltraLiner in black on top lash line.

Monday

This morning I set the alarm for 6am, but somehow it was turned off. My body usually wakes me at that time anyway, but I guess due to the time change, I didn't wake until 7:30, leaving me very little time to get ready.

I had showered the day prior, let my hair air-dry with a few spritzes of Frizz-Ease Dram Curls, so it wasn't in awful shape. I hit a few pieces with the curling iron and then brushed it all with a wood-bristled padded brush.

Outfit is a black ribbed crewneck sweater from Chico's, ivory wool blend cuffed trousers from Ann Taylor, strand of pearls from limited doubled around the neck, black city boots from Impo.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, a bit of Smashbox Soft Light in Tint on the apples of my cheeks, The Body Shop shadow in Slate on the lid and Soft Black int he crease and lightly along the lash line, DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black on curled lashes, The Body Shop's Sheer Lipcolor in sheer Caramel.

Saturday

Busy Saturday. My dad starts with a yoga class that my husband teaches at the local studio, then I had to get to a baby shower early to help the hostess set up, then had to leave the shower early to have dinner with dear old family friends who were in town, then had a concert in the same part of the city as the dinner. Very little time in between to change clothes.

This is my standard yoga attire; tees in pretty colors and black bottoms. The majority of my athletic wear is from Target because it's cheap there and looks almost the same as the fancy stuff. The tee is one of those $7.99 Mossimo numbers - I have the same tee in a cadet blue and a berry shade. As for the capris, they are actually from Ann Taylor Loft. Heavy knit with a drawstring waist and a few pockets, they are great since I walk to class and don't carry a purse. I can fit my ID and check card in the leg pocket and I don't even notice it during postures.

Hair is on its second day, I just brushed out the curls and used a round brush and dryer to the bangs to smooth them out. As that this is basic Hatha yoga and not a lot of sweating, I don't see a anything wrong with a bit of makeup to look less like death. I have on a touch of L'Oreal True Match foundation around the eyes and mouth, Cover Girl Lash Exact mascara in Black and The Body Shop's Cheek & Lip tint on the lips for color that lasts.

To walk to class I threw on a blue fleece from L.L. Bean, white ankle socks and my New Balance trainers.

Got home and had 15 minutes to get ready for the shower. Not enough time to think well, so I put on a black scoopneck short sleeved sweater from Old Navy, black wool-blend trousers from Ann Taylor Loft, black city boots from Impo, my silver cuff and my silver ring necklace from Ann Taylor Loft.

After the baby shower, got home and felt that my all-black attire was too reminiscent of my years working in the makeup and skincare industry so changed. I knew dinner would probably be in the Baltimore Inner Harbor at a popular tourist haunt, so denim would be appropriate. Good thing since the concert was a General Admission warehouse-like club.

Hair, I hit a few pieces with the curling iron and then brushed out. Over the day the hair got a shaggy rocker look that I really liked. No need for additional product.

Black and white cotton kimono-inspired top from H&M, under it a black spandex cami from Victoria's Secret, red stone necklace from a boutique at Rehoboth Beach, denim trousers from Gap, black city boots from Impo. After dinner, I removed the cami for the look you see here.

For makeup, I added Slate shadow from The Body Shop on the lid and Soft Black on the crease and along lash line. Added a second coat of mascara with DioShow Unlimited in Black, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the cheeks and on the lips was Revlon SheerGlide in Sheer Burgundy.

March 9, 2007

Friday

Today I am going to a hockey game in the city after work, so wanted to look appropriate for both events. Black and gray fuzzy stretchy v-neck sweater tunic from Banana Republic, gray ribbed tank from Old Navy underneath, denim trousers from Gap, black city boots from Impo, silver cuff bracelet.

You may have noticed that I haven't been wearing silver hoops lately. My large ones were in my purse in the front pocket (very structured pocket), yet when I took them out a few weeks ago, one of the posts was missing. Not in the pocket, nowhere to be found and the earrings not wearable. My medium hoops, I remember taking them off one evening and putting them on my bureau. The next morning, only one was there. Not sure if it fell on the ground and got lost or even eaten by the dog, but two weeks later I still cannot find the missing hoop. As for the Nordstrom dangly earrings, well one fell out mid-day without me noticing it and I have not been able to find it. This is terribly frustrating because I have had the medium hoops for years without an issue and don't usually lose jewelry. Top this off, I am trying this month to not buy anything that is not necessary. Just gas, groceries and replacements for things I NEED. yes, I love me some silver hoops and it sort of makes me ME, but I don't NEED them... though i do feel a bit naked....

Anyway, today is a far better hair day. Washed and conditioned with my beloved Kiwi, added Suave Professionals healthy Curls mousse, scrunched and dried with a diffuser. I then hit random sections with a curling iron to give definition. I then lightly brushed out the curls with my wood-bristled brush, used the curling iron to straighten out the bangs a bit, then hit the whole thing with some Sebastian Shaper Spray to keep it in place.

Makeup started with my Smashbox Primer since it will be a long day. Over it is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3 and a touch of concealer around the eyes in W4-5. On cheeks was the Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the apples, then Nars Orgasm blush applied over it also on the apples. On eyes, I took my Maybelline shadow quad and ran my brush over all the muted grayish shades and then applied to the lid, curled the lashes and applied DiorShow Unlimited mascara in Black and then a nice swoop of Maybelline's Ultra Liner in Black on the top lash line. On lips is Revlon's ColorGlide in Rum Radiance.

Thursday

Definitely a bad hair day. Second day, it looks dull. I tried blowing out the bendy pieces and it looked worse. Hit it up with a straightening iron, it looked like Goth Barbie hair. Added some Jonathan Dirt and then gave up and grabbed a barrette and pinned back the bangs. Some days, no matter what you do it can't be the best hair day.

As for the outfit, I like this one. I think it's a bit bohemian, artsy yet work appropriate. Every time I wear it I receive compliments, and the heavy cut-off tights are quite warm! Black knit dress from Velvet Torch, black spandex cami from Victoria's Secret underneath, black heavy cut-off tights from Target, black round-toe high-heeled pumps from Jessica Simpson, black coral necklace from Mexico.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the apples of the cheeks. On eyes is a very light dusting of The Body Shop's shadow in Slate, DiorShow Unlimited mascara in Black and Maybelline's Ultra Liner in Black on the top lash line. On lips is Revlon ColorGlide in Rum Radiance.

A Fabulous Beauty Concept....

Dana Ayanna Greaves is a visitor to this blog, and a savvy yet beauty-conscious businesswoman. She has applied for a contest through IdeaWins and Microsoft to start a new business and the idea sounds like fun - an organic beauty bar - not as in a bar of soap but more like a buffet of great organic products to create treatments for your face. Think a smoothie in a day-spa setting, but the ability to take these products home too!

Check out the videos HERE, vote for the one you like the best; hopefully your favorite will be Dana's!

Thanks!

Wednesday

Though it may be snowing outside in the Nation's Capital, I know it will be toasty warm in my office. I never understand why bad weather forces women to look like shlumps. The majority of people going to work in this country walk less than a block from their cars through freshly plowed and salted parking lots to climate-controlled offices. What's up with the not-brushed hair, clunky boots and heavy sweatshirts? I today wore my parka, gloves and a scarf, but removed them all to be a normal office drone. A snow day does not mean a day where you can look like you rolled out of bed. That being said, I wore short sleeves. I am perfectly comfortable in my heated office in my little cubicle. No need for old sweaters and fleece.

Ivory lace top from Banana Republic Outlet, the ivory satin ribbon at the waist replaced with a black grosgrain one from the craft store. Nude cami form Limited underneath. Black wool blend trousers from Ann Taylor Loft, black city boots from Impo.

Hair is washed! Hooray! Too bad I was running late and couldn't get super creative with it. I added a small amount of Straight Sexy Hair's Shine On! mixed with Nexxus Texxtur. I then blew it out straight with a round brush with a ceramic core. A touch of BioSilk was added to the ends for shine and separation. Here's a picture showing the new color of highlights quite well. Very fun!

The picture at the top of this post has a bad face because I realized I hadn't applied any lipcolor before shooting. Whoops! Here I am on the parkway in my Lands End parka and trusty pashmina heading to work, NOW with lipcolor.

L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, a bit of Chanel pressed powder in Natural applied with a fluffy brush, Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the apples of my cheeks, The Body Shop Slate shadow on the lid, Soft Black in the crease and along lash line, DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black, and finally before I drove out of my parking space, Revlon LipGlide Sheer in Sheer Burgundy on the lips!

Personal Style Should Not be Work

Fashion should not be work. Fashion is a form of art – when art becomes work, it no longer is artistic.

Many women I know both in-person and through this blog seem to work too hard in becoming chic, fashionable or stylish. When style becomes frustrating, tiring, annoying or exasperating, it no longer exists. If a painter becomes so famous that he creates works of art in an assembly-line fashion, those paintings no longer are true art – they no longer hold part of the artist’s soul.

If style doesn’t come to you naturally, you are in the MAJORITY. Just as the majority of the population cannot sing, cannot sculpt, cannot dance well. It is something that you work on, and with passion it may grow to either a talent or something you enjoy behind closed doors. The problem with personal style is that it cannot be kept behind closed doors. Every day you are seen and judged by your wardrobe; and so the pressure for style skill is ever present.

If you stick to very simple basics in your wardrobe, dressing will be far simpler. So stovepipe jeans are in, as are platform sandals with dark hose. This does not mean they should be in your wardrobe. The hot color is yellow but just the thought of wearing that color makes you turn green, then for all means DO NOT WEAR IT. If you feel safest in a wardrobe of black and gray and denim, then until you feel more confident and skilled, there is no reason to venture into blue and red territory. Keep it very simple at first, stick with simple until you feel secure.

When you first ride a bike you have not only training wheels, but often a parent holding on to the back of the seat. The parent lets go, you wobble on the training wheels and then begin to feel steady. The training wheels are removed, but the parent is back to keep you straight. Once you have the hang of it, the parent lets go of the bike, you coast down the sidewalk and suddenly you can ride. Now, once you ride, you won’t be popping wheelies and jumping of 5’ cliffs in the mountains. You get acclimated to concrete and asphalt. You master turns and quick stops. After a long time perfecting your basic pedaling skills, you may move on to rougher terrain, or maybe tricks or long journeys. You will move from the standard bike to maybe a road model, one for trail rides, or one for BMX. Possibly you may find that you really don’t want to go farther than the occasional ride on the street and are perfectly happy with your first bike. You dabble in one style, find that you have a passion for it, and only then do you invest in the proper tools to follow that passion.

We women often try to be Lance Armstrong when we haven’t even taken off the training wheels. We want it all, and we want it now. We’ll buy every self-help book out there, subscribe to a dozen fashion magazines and TiVo What Not to Wear and how Do I Look. We go from a wardrobe of sweats to stilettos and complicated frocks. We feel frustrated and lost and hopeless.

Go back to my staples. These are simple items you can find at the local mall, big box retailer and often even a thrift store. If you are scared of color right now, then replace the colorful tops with muted shades. If you don’t ever wear jewelry, then hold off on the hoop earrings. Get some basic, well-made pieces that fit you properly and make you feel secure when you wear them. You have pieces that you can wear to work, to church, to pick up your son from pay group, to head to the grocery store. You have stepped from covering your body to dressing it. Stay at this point as long as you like, be it a couple months or a couple years. Don’t push it. There are things in life far more important than finding your proper colors or the It bag for the season.

You know you’re ready to take off those training wheels when you start admiring fashion in magazines, on TV and in stores. Like paintings, you can find beauty in a Dali, a Monet and a Warhol. The thing is to see which styles really capture you and tug at your soul. Is it the feminine lacy and sheer blouses in whites and pale shades this spring? Maybe it’s the yellow patent leather clutch in your recent fashion mag. Whatever it is that appeals to you, really think about it and how it connects to your personality. Slowly allow yourself to indulge in a piece of clothing or an accessory that you adore. Maybe it’s a modern silver bangle bracelet or a woven straw purse. Possibly it’s a biker-inspired leather jacket or a floral silk scarf for your throat. Take this one item and infuse it into your wardrobe. Examine your reflection before you leave for your day and in shop windows and restroom mirrors. Do you like what you see? Do you feel comfortable and yourself with this piece? If not, that’s okay. We all impulse shop. Take this as a learning experience and give the piece to a friend or donate it. Don’t hold on to it just because you bought it. Having items in your wardrobe that are wrong is far worse than having a miniscule wardrobe of things that are right.

When you wear this new piece, see what types of reactions you receive. Do people say you look as though you lost weight in that turquoise shade? Did a stranger compliment you on your necklace? Did someone ask you directions (this is a good one, because it often means that you seem to be confident and knowledgeable and approachable)?

You will see that your fashion tastes will most likely be in line with your tastes in movies, music, art and home décor. A person who loves Laura Ashley sheets will often like more feminine and delicate styles. One who loves indie flicks will often like styles that are one of a kind and have a funky, artsy vibe. If your favorite genre of music is rap, you may be drawn to strong lines and bold colors. Just because celebrities and models and fashionistas wear it does not mean you need to wear it too. The reason certain celebrities are celebrated for their style is because they have dressed to fit their personality, not a how-to book or a glossy page from Vogue.

As you begin to understand your personal style, your wardrobe will grow. You will make mistakes, you will get frustrated, you will occasionally feel lost. This happens with all aspects of your personality and life. If you can have a midlife crisis over the state of your life and your direction, so can you about your wardrobe. In college I lived at J. Crew. Lots of sundresses, chinos, polo shirts and cardigans tied around my neck. I was attracted to simple lines and neutral colors. My hair was long and wavy and often in a ponytail. Makeup was some mascara and a swipe of tinted lip balm. After college I got into a creative field and my wardrobe morphed with my tastes in music and books. Suddenly I had a lot of leather in my wardrobe; I counted six pairs of leather jeans and ten black turtlenecks at one time. I straightened my hair and dyed it a very very dark brown. I wore lots of animal prints and had my nails short and often a strange shade like dark green, black or silver. As I got older and got married and comfortable with myself, I saw my tastes change again. I liked natural fabrics with stretch that grazed over my curves and were comfortable. I mixed bright cheery colors with neutrals and began wearing almost only silver jewelry, much that was made by my Great Aunt or picked up on trips around the globe. I preferred a night in with the husband and a nice bottle of wine over an evening of club-hopping in the city. None of these changes were overnight, they were subtle transformations. Keep this in mind – your style will change based on your place in life. Be aware of how you tastes change with food or movies or music; this is often a way to help you know when it’s time to let your wardrobe catch up to your self.

Often we hold onto clothing because it reminds us of our past self. I’ll admit that I have red leather jeans hanging in my guest bedroom closet. They are three sizes smaller than what I wear now, and I look at them and see a very confident, strong me who was skinny, powerful, and a bit frightening. I feel that if I could wear those jeans again, maybe I could still be that person. But then I realize that I wouldn’t want to be that person. Now I am a calm, happy and comfortably confident person who doesn’t need a suit of armor to work a room. We all have that dress, pair of boots or jacket that reminds us of when we may have been thinner, happier or hipper. The thing is, you are not that person any more, and that’s okay. You can’t go back in time, and if you could you probably wouldn’t find the past to be as wonderful as you remember it to be. The only way to be happy now is to live in the now and that peasant skirt or leopard-print trench is holding you back from the person you can be. Celebrate the you are now by tuning into your interests, your passions, your loves and your unique personality. Find objects and garments that show you off. If you tune into who you are on the inside, it becomes easier to figure out how you should look on the outside. Next thing you know, you may be giving Lance Armstrong a run for his money!

Tuesday

Brown merino bracelet sleeve v-neck from Gap, coral and brown and ivory tweed trousers from Ann Taylor, brown peep toe pumps with wood heels from Maripe, thin gold hoops from Diva.

These are my last 14 pants, and I realize that when I bend over or squat I look as though I am wearing a diaper in the front. Other than that, I think they still look okay, not as form-fitting but appropriate. when I started considering selling my too-big clothes I realized many have things like busted pant linings and stains and hems held up with Stitch Witchery. Like these pants... they are in excellent condition and really great quality and only a year or two old but they have an unfortunate stain from an unfortunate day that only women have.... yeah not really the selling or even donating type.... I am embarrassed enough when I take them to the cleaners. If I was more crafty I think I would make them into a bag or a pillow or something. For now, I will wear them until I look as though I am wearing a diaper when NOT bending over.

Okay, on to hair. Today it was looking a bit greasy because last night after dinner my hubby and I were watching crappy TV (can we say I Love New York??) and he gave me a scalp massage and it was lovely but it left my hair a bit on the oily side. I took a bit of baby powder and rubbed it at the scalp, then brushed my hair with a wood-tooth padded brush. I then took my curling iron and used it like a straightening iron to smooth out my bangs and any places that had bedhead. I then used some Sebastian Shaper Spray for some body. I am looking forward to washing my hair!

As for makeup, L'Oreal true Match foundation in C3, some Body Shop bronzing powder in Light on face and neck for color, a bit of Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the apples of the cheeks, eyes is the Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in neutral - ivory in corners and along brow bone, khaki on lid and chocolate in crease and along lash lines. Lashes curled and DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black applied. On lips is Revlon ColorGlide in Rum Radiance.

Monday

Gosh it feels good to have a haircut! Keep in mind I couldn't wash it today so I am working with the style that I received yesterday after a night of tossing and turning. All I did was use a round brush and dryer to smooth out the bangs and a bit of Jonathan Dirt for texture.

Hair is darker, many streaks of a very dark chocolate brown, a berry tinted red and auburn. I think I look healthier with dark hair and was feeling bold so I let my stylist put whatever colors she liked in my hair. Hope to have better pictures when i get to wash and style it myself!

As for the outfit, white stretch poplin shirt from Ann Taylor, gray stretch suiting tab-waist trousers from 2002 The Limited (yes, a small size 12 and fitting quite comfortably! Love to shop from my attic), red stone necklace from a boutique at Rehoboth Beach, red pointy toed pumps from Steven.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3 over Smashbox primer. Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on cheeks. On eyes is a Maybelline ExpertWear shadow quad in Mocha Motion: the silvery white on inner corners and along brow bone, the taupe shade on the lid. Maybelline Ultra Liner in Black on top lash line, lashes curled and DiorShow Unlimited mascara in black applied. On lips is Revlon ColorGlide Sheer in Sheer Burgundy.

Sunday

Time to get that hair cut! Even though I have been seeing my stylist for a while, I feel that you should dress and do your face as you would every day for a visit to the salon. Dress in sweats and the stylist doesn't really get your sense of style and your personality. I also hard a hard time getting out of bed and nothing wakes one up more than dressing up - makeup, hair and heels.

Black jersey dress from Velvet Torch with black synthetic cami from Victoria's Secret underneath. Black coral necklace from Mexico thanks to the hubby, black round-toe high heeled pumps from Jessica Simpson.

Hair was washed, conditioned and blown dry while brushing with a padded wood-teeth brush. No product.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3, Body Shop bronzing powder in Light on face with some Smashbox Soft Lights in Tint on the apples of the cheeks. On eyes is Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral - the ivory on inner corners and along brow bone, khaki mixed with The Body Shop's Slate on the lids. lashes curled and DiorShow Unlimited mascara in Black applied. On lips is Revlon ColorGlide in Rum Radiance.
