Away for a Bit

My father in law passed away yesterday. I will be taking a break from the blogs while I care for my family. I thank you for your understanding and will miss you guys. :)

See you soon,
Alison

I didn't go to work on Monday. I really wasn't feeling well - very very tired and worn out. However Friday and this weekend I slept every time my body wanted to and I feel tons better today. Also had a discussion with work and I will be working from home one day a week because the commute is starting to get to me. It will most likely be Wednesdays.

This weekend was pretty uneventful, which is about perfect for me these days.

Friday the workers completed the subfloor and frame for part of our home remodel. That night I had my women's circle. I wore a black and green print matte jersey faux wrap dress from Ann Taylor Loft, black leggings from Liz Lange for Target, and black ballet flats from Naturalizer.

Saturday we decided to not deal with the rain and didn't attend Maryland's homecoming. Instead, we slept in for the first time in what feels like years. We went for a very late breakfast, then went to a few places to spec out kitchen cabinets, came home and huddled inside (super rainy and cold) and watched a couple movies and went to bed early.

Sunday we worked on chores - laundry, cleaning, dishes, that sort of thing. We took a walk because the days was gorgeous; did some outdoor yoga in a sunny field and then came home for a quiet and early evening.

Tonight I am getting my hair cut and will ask my stylist what to do with the color. Kinda dreary weather in DC - misty rain and gray skies. Feeling pretty tired, but happy the day is almost over! :)

My other bargain from the Motherhood Maternity Outlet in Rehoboth Beach - only $9.99 and super soft! The pants were given to me by a friend - with a safety pin they work as maternity pants. Pretty cool since now the only shoes that fit me are these booties and my Duo boots and I had an important conference today where I had to dress in a manner more professional than casual leather boots and I am down to just a couple of black pants that are all in need of a washing. I caved in and ordered some new shoes in a wider and larger size, they should arrive next week. I had to return the round-toe wedges from Report - after two wearings with bare legs and a few wearings around the house in socks they still tear up my ankles to the point that I can't wear any other pumps for two weeks. Not cool at all.

Well the conference went really well - I was in charge of a major aspect of it (my first real time with this company where I was the one in charge of such an important event) and it went quite well. BIG relief; the prepping has been stressful the past week and I am glad to have it over and done with. Now I better sign off and get ready to work on the next project! :)

Zappos Keeps Getting Better!

Zappos Clothing FashionI think I am with most women in ADORING Zappos. I can find styles and brands I can’t find anywhere else, free super-fast shipping, free returns and the reviews are so incredibly helpful in making purchase decisions! Many a time I had wished there was a Zappos for clothing – could search by size, color, style and come up with hundreds of options.

Zappos, have you been reading my mind? For now if you visit their site, you will see they do in fact carry clothing! Same great shipping and return policy, and a constantly growing selection of small brands and covetable labels. Zappos contacted me and asked me to try out their clothing department.

As with the Zappos shoe department, one can search clothing by gender, size, color, style and price. Once you have entered these search features, you can then organize your selections by popularity, how new the item is to the site, brand name, and price. You can also use the search function at the top to find a specific brand or style name. Though the clothing department is still new, many customers have already provided reviews which make it far more helpful than department store Web sites offering the same brands. Finally, Zappos’ Live Help is available for their clothing as well as their shoe department.

I love all this, because I often go to Zappos to find a specific item I saw on a celebrity or on the pages of a magazine. I usually have brand and style name, but little else. The Zappos site makes it easy to quickly find items like this.

The first time I visited their clothing department, I took a quick look but left because they didn’t have maternity. A week later, three pages of maternity fashions (and as of today a fourth page!). Really shows how quickly this branch of Zappos is growing! Checking out this list, you can see how extensive Zappos’ clothing department is.

Searching the maternity department, I was impressed by the brands available – high-end department store and boutique lines like Olian, Japanese Weekend, Chiarakruza, Liz Lange, Chip and Pepper, and Theality. They offered not only separates, but all levels of dress, as well as some maternity and nursing lingerie and sleepwear.

I did find that the size selection was a bit limited, but attribute that to the department being so new. I liked that I could break down my search by style (was really looking for either a long-sleeved dress or a sweater for the upcoming colder months).

Olian Maternity DressWhen looking at specific styles, I ADORE the multiple-view photographs. You don't just see the garment on a perfect mannequin or model (and possibly pinned and clipped in back to flatter), you see close-ups of the fabric, the front, the back, the side, the closures, and more. This really assisted me in finding a style that I knew would work with my figure and lifestyle.

I ordered the Olian Nicole Side Tie Dress on Monday afternoon and received it before dinner on Tuesday. How awesome is that? As always Zappos packed my order carefully and send just the right amount of emails to let me know the status of my package. Searching online, I found the price to be competitive with department stores and boutiques.

All in all, I have been very impressed with the Zappos clothing department and keep coming back to see what new brands and styles they have to offer!

P.S. You guys KNOW I love Ebates… well if you visit the Zappos site through Ebates, you can can get 5% cash back on your entire order. Haven’t signed up for Ebates yet? What’s stopping you? It’s free, it’s easy and it’s money in the bank from online shopping!

This weekend was pretty good. Friday I had to work late so I pretty much came home, had dinner and went to bed. Saturday we went to the Maryland Reneaissance Festival with our friends. It was the last weekend and packed with people, which tired me out faster than I expected. We stayed a couple of hours, and then headed home and my sister and I had dinner with my mom and her boyfriend.

These pictures are from Saturday - In the first one, I was taking an empty beer bottle (not mine) to the recycling bin and bringing in the broom and my husband thought it was pretty funny. You can see how the house remodel is going - the whole front of the house is all torn up, there's a 4' ditch around the house perimeter (which may be filled today if the county comes by to approve what has been done thus far), and a huge pile of clay in the middle of the yard. Definitely not pretty, but it will be once it is complete! :)

The second picture is a picture of me with my sister at the Ren Fest.

So for the Ren Fest I wore my black jersey dress from Boob Maternity, orange crinkle scarf from Banana Republic, tan boots from Bern, silver necklace, cuff and hoops. Hair down, simple makeup. I knew there would be a lot of walking and standing and my Duo boots are by far the most comfortable footwear that still fits me!

Sunday was cleaning day. We had the Ravens and Redskins games on the TV, but pretty much did chores throughout the entire time. It felt good to get so much accomplished.

Zappos Keeps Getting Better!

This article is a repost from my other blog, My Wardrobe Today. Since it has received lots of questions, comments and emails from readers, I decided to do a PSA and post it here as well.

Some answers to questions - yes, I was offered a discount through Zappos to provide this review, but was asked to be blatantly honest with my experience in return. Completely honest, this is how pleased I was with the experience. I did not get free overnight shipping because I was part of this promotion, I received an upgrade email (I and friends have received similar ones from previous shoe purchases). The item came in the famous Zappos box, was in the traditional sealed clear plastic shipping bag (same with other online retailers) and the return policy is exactly the same as it is with Zappos shoes. Interested? Keep reading! :)

Ask Allie: Comfy and Stylish Shoes

I have previously written about comfortable and stylish shoes, but each season new styles come out and readers come to be with new needs.

Dear Allie: I am at a loss w/ regards to finding cute but comfy everyday shoes- I am not a tennis shoe person. Most cute flats really aren't supportive enough to walk around in while carrying a baby, etc. I am ashamed that I love my Crocs- but now that I am no longer pregnant and my daughter is not a newborn I feel there is no excuse for me to wear them anywhere than around the house, in the rain, etc... What are cute, supportive yet somewhat attractive shoes I can wear all of the time?

Dear Allie: I’m sorry, but I just can’t wear pumps. I am a BBW and I love to look stylish for work, but anything over a 2” heel is murder on my feet, my knees, my hips. Also my workplace is the government and pretty conservative. However I don’t want to wear granny shoes and I agree with you – us BBW look stupid and top-heavy in ballet flats (not like they have support any way). Where can I find comfortable work shoes that will work all day?

Dear Allie: You rarely mention animal-friendly or eco-friendly options for footwear. I believe you are a vegetarian so this surprises me. Would you let your readers know about some shoes that are vegan and kind to the earth? There are many comfortable and fashionable styles available.

Allie - I was hoping I might ask you a question about shoes for wide feet? My feet are wider than most womens across the toes and I really struggle to find quality shoes that are also comfortable and don't leave my poor toes screaming for mercy by the end of the day. Do you happen to know of any good brands of shoes for girls with wide feet??

Hope these options will assist many of you in finding comfortable, well-made shoes that will care for your feet and your personal needs. I usually try to find low-cost options for my suggestions; many of these are over my standard $100 price point. The reason is your feet are the hardest working part of your body, and it’s near impossible to find comfortable, supportive, well-made shoes at bargain bin prices. I am all for checking out outlets for these brands, but I do stand behind my belief that shoes are something you should spend money on. A couple pairs that are good to you will last you for years and be very worth your money.

Eco-Conscious
It really is possibly to find shoes that are friendly to animals and the environment while being comfortable and cute.

Simple is a brand that marries all of these with some terrific footwear. Their Women’s Jumper Certified Leather Mary Jane is made for walking with a technologically-advanced foot bed, plenty of arch support, and a cushy sole that will deflect hard and bumpy surfaces. The classic style will work with skirts, shorts and pants easily and can be worn through most any season. In brown, black and merlot red.

Earth carries many vegan shoes that are comfortable and cute. The Inhale is a casual flat with breathable microfibers and mesh uppers that will keep your feet cool and comfortable. They have included Negative Heel ™ technology which helps keep your body properly aligned, and it contains an anatomic shock-absorbing foot bed. In black.

Corporate-Conscious
You may have to walk many city blocks or fight public transportation for your commute, but that doesn’t mean you have to wear clunky clogs or corny Crocs to keep your feet happy. There are many shoes out there that are sleek, professional, suit-worthy and still kind to your tootsies.

ECCO is a company that makes well-made, supportive shoes in classic styles. The silhouettes are feminine and elegant while still considering foot health. Podiatrists often say a bit of a heel is actually healthier for the foot arch than a completely flat shoe. The Durango pump by ECCO has a wedge heel which distributes weight, eliminating hot spots on the bottom of the foot. Rounded toe gives plenty of room, and the subtle details make it elegant and a great choice with skirts or trousers. Available in black or whiskey.

Aerosoles is a great company that offers comfortable styles, many widths and sizes, yet has professional and stylish choices. The Ballistic slip-on is a classic office style with a low wedge heel, elegant hardware detail, and a nice range of colors that will add pizzazz to any conservative office attire. In black, tan, gray or dark red.

The Princess suede pump from Perlina is stylish, feminine, in fun colors and so nice to your feet. Shock absorbing outsole, leather sock lining wicks away moisture and allows the shoe to mold to the natural contours of the foot, and cushioned, leather-lined foot bed features latex foam padding for extended wear. In black, blue, brown, graphite, burgundy and pistachio suede.

Style-Conscious
Looking for a way to merge current trends and happy feet? There are many brands out there that slightly modify the trends so that they can be a podiatrist’s fave.

Dansko is known for having comfortable, well-made shoes that last for years. They also have really brought on some hip styles over the past few seasons. The Delilah Boot takes the current riding boot trend and makes it comfortable and supportive. Podiatrist-friendly heel height, flexible sole and removable leather foot bed adds to comfort. Available in black or chocolate.

Get on the Mad Men trend with these lady-like pumps with vintage styling from Sofft. The Kensington pump has a healthy heel height, rounded toe for tootsie freedom, and a cushioned foot bed. Available in black, brown, caramel and a gorgeous blue.

Booties and heeled oxfords continue to be the rage this season; Aerosoles has created their version of this trend with an extra cushioned foot bed and flexible rubber sole. Available in green, black, dark red and light brown.

Multi-tasking-Conscious
You need a shoe that can work with jeans, with pants, for the office or the market. Every day is different, and you just don’t have the time or the budget to have a footwear collection that is equally as varied. No problem, there are some wonderful styles out there that will work with all sorts of attire, lifestyles and seasons.

ECCO has created a perennial favorite with their Bouillon Mary Jane. Feminine styling, yet having a rugged and flexible sole that can take miles of walking. The classic look works with jeans, capris, shorts, skirts and more. Always available in black leather, each season they offer more creative of choices such as silver, black patent or red.

I cannot stress the benefits of having a simple city boot in your wardrobe. They are easy to pull on with any pants or jeans, you don’t have to worry about what hosiery to wear, they keep your foot protected from the elements, are easy to polish up or re-heel to look fresh each year, and a simple cut will be stylish for years to come. The Blind Sight boot from Aerosoles fits the bill with sleek styling, a square toe to give toes room to move, foot-friendly heel height and width, and extra cushioned foot bed. In brown or black.

Width-Conscious
As a woman with wide feet, I can relate to this problem. As styles get more pointy, high, and snubbed, feet often get squashed. Here's some great styles and companies that pamper the wider foot.

DUO, a company I adore for custom-width boots also has an extensive line of shoes in wider widths. I adore the Nicole - a wide-fitting low profile pump that comes in black suede or a flirty animal print. Cushioned insole and low heel makes this style chic yet utterly wearable all day. Check out their other styles, there are many to choose from that have wider widths than most brands. Unsure about your size? Contact their customer service to ensure you are getting exactly what you and your tootsies need.

Naturalizer comes in Narrow, Regular, Wide and Double Wide widths for their shoes. Looking at a size 8, I found 12 styles available in WW, one being the Creston Flat. This is a shoe I personally own and adore because it is wide, comfortable, flexible and low-profile. I wear these when assisting my husband on long photo shoots and when day tripping through city streets and museums. Available in red, camelot (camel) and tootsie roll (dark brown).

Ruby & Bloom is a company that offers current styles in Narrow, Regular and Wide widths. The Corrina pump has perforated contrast trim that gives a stylish spectator style, a stacked heel helps with weight distribution, and its height is all-day wearable. In black/dark brown, black/merlot, and black/gray.

Fitzwell is a company known for their extensive sizes (goes up to 12) and roomy wide width. Dozens of their styles are available on Zappos, but I really like the Rayna II wedge. A comfortable height of 2.5", a wedge heel that helps distribute weight better, and a feminine silhouette. Available in black or brown leather, black, wine, or grey suede.

Friday

Attire:
Old Navy maternity: Dark patch pocket jeans (roll waist)
Banana Republic Outlet - Black ponte jacket
eBay (forgot brand) - White maternity tee, pinned in back so a bit of shape
Renaissance Festival - Silver necklace
Silver hoops and cuff
Sudini - Black leather booties

Hair:
Next day, large sections in curling iron

Beauty:
Laura Mercier - Flawless Face Kit in Sand
Nars - Blush in Orgasm
Pop Beauty - Shadow palette for brown eyes - khaki on lid
Maybelline - UltraLiner in black
Cover Girl - LashBlast mascara in Rich Black
Benefit - Her Glossiness in Next Question Please

So glad it is Friday! The past two days have been kinda tough. I feel that I have gained 20 pounds in two days, it's hard to put on pants, hard to put on shoes (have to use my pant leg to pull my foot up on my opposite knee), torture when I drop something and have to get down to pick it up. I have to get up to use the bathroom a couple times a night and it's difficult to get out of the bed. I feel like a Weeble Wobble. That plus getting hot so easily, it makes the commute to work pretty tough, and mental clarity and creativity at work a struggle. Glad to have the weekend where I can rest up and prepare for next week!

Tomorrow we plan on visiting the Maryland Renaissance Festival with a group of friends. Other than that, no real plans which is EXACTLY what I need! I hope to do some laundry, packing of stuff for the remodel (today they arrived with ladders so I think they are going to soon put up the new exterior walls) and lots of napping! :) Hope you guys have wonderful weekends!

Thursday

Greetings from my office, where I am attempting to take a self-portrait without a coworker catching me! I left my camera on my desk last night and so no pictures of my very cute outfit (I do still dress well when not photographed!). As that this maternity wardrobe is limited, I believe you can imagine how the outfit looks...

Attire:
Boob Maternity - Black jersey dress (went in the dryer by accident and shrunk but now I think it fits me better!)
Limited - ivory and wood bead necklaces
Duo - Bern Boots in Tan
Silver hoops and cuff

Hair:
Washed and conditioned last night pre-debate
Matrix Curl.Life Contouring Milk
Air dry
This morning, took big sections into the curling iron in an attempt to tame and smooth... didn't work. Hair is coarse, fried and needs a trim STAT.

Beauty:
Laura Mercier - Flawless Face Kit in Sand
Nars - Blush in Orgasm
Dior Addict - High Shine Lipstick in Casual Beige
Maybelline - Brow powder in Dark Brown, Shadow quad in Mocha Motion
Body Shop - Brow & Lash Gel in Clear, Eye Color in Soft Black (crease and lash lines)
Cover Girl - LashBlast mascara in Rich Black

October 15, 2008

Wednesday

Not really feeling this dress but it was essentially free (will post about it within the week). Also woke up feeling a bit achy and icky so not in the best mood for a bold print.

Attire:
Olian Maternity - Brown print jersey wrap dress
Silhouettes - Brown suede boots
Silver hoops

Hair:
Day 3 - needs a trim

Beauty:
Laura Mercier - Flawless Face Kit in Sand
Cargo - Matte BeachBlush in Tenerife
Body Shop - Shimmer Cubes in Warmth (peach on lid, chocolate in crease and along lash lines)
Victoria's Secret - Lip Gloss in French Kiss
Cover Girl - Lash Blast mascara in Rich Black
Bath & Body Works - Breathe Energy Body Spray (needed something more green and energizing than my usual Burberry London)

I think this is proof positive that it does make a difference what your colors are. I know many people pooh-pooh at knowing "your colors" or "season." I often like to wear orange and warm tones because they are pleasing to my eye and full of energy. However you can see the difference between today and yesterday how I am obviously a Winter and look best in cool tones. My face doesn't look bad... but it looks far better when in grays and pinks and cool shades. :) Think next time the dress will be worn with a pump and with some cool toned makeup... and a haircut!

Tuesday

Attire:
Olian Maternity - Pink jersey top (on sale at Nordstrom for like $29 and totally worth it - super comfy, easy to wash, gorgeous color, doesn't itch or even feel as though you're wearing anything)
Old Navy Maternity - Black ponte trousers (expect to see these a LOT in the next couple of months)
Report - Black round-toe wedges
Silver hoops

Hair:
Next day, just used dryer and round brush to smooth

Beauty:
Laura Mercier - Flawless Face Kit in Sand
Nars - Blush in Orgasm
Benefit - Pink to Please the Girl... palette: shadows in pink and champagne blended on lid
Dior Addict - High Shine Lipstick in Casual Beige
L'Oreal - H.I.P. Cream Liner in Black
Cover Girl - LashBlast mascara in Rich Black

Friday Through Monday

Sorry for the delay, Friday was BUSY and this weekend I didn't get much computer time.

Friday's Attire:
Old Navy Maternity - Black tee, dark jeans
Liberty - Silk scarf
Sudini - Black leather booties (currenly at the cobbler getting reheeled - city walking destroys heels!)
Silver hoops and cuff

Hair:
Next day, thrown up in a messy updo

Beauty:
Laura Mercier - Flawless Face kit in Sand
Nars - Blush in Orgasm
Clinique - Longwear Lipstick in Beauty
Maybelline - Brow powder in Dark Brown, shadow quad in Mocha Motion on lids
Body Shop - Brow & Lash Gel in Clear, Eye Color in Soft Black
Cover Girl - LashBlast mascara in Rich Black

Saturday we ran tons of errands all over town. I wore my black wrap long-sleeved tee from Old Navy and the same jeans from Friday with my Chucks. I didn't feel too well Saturday evening so I made it an early night.

Sunday we started off with volunteering at the local Farmer's Market. I wore the same jeans and a black tank from Gap and a black hoodie. We then headed home where I changed to my olive cotton long-sleeved wrap tee, my bead and silver necklace from Target and a bit of shadow and went to my husband's Godson's second birthday party. It was a nice time - moonbounce, pinata and a picnic table all decked out with paints to decorate little pumpkins. My husband and I couldn't resist - I did a pink girly pumpkin and my husband painted his to be a portrait of me - complete with big hoop earrings and pink and blonde streaks in my hair. :)

Today I worked from home because I had my glucose test in the morning. Nothing exciting attire-wise - black hoodie, black "Maryland" tee, pair of Old Navy maternity jeans and Chucks. Hair was washe dthe night before and jsut hanging loose. Just mascara and a bit of Laura Mercier concealer.

Marshalls Shoe MegaShop Does it Again!

Marshalls Shoe MegaShopCompanies spend so much on advertising and marketing… I love it when they do it well. This time last year I posted about a fabulous truck I saw on the DC streets – Marshalls filled a glass box with tons of covetable shoes. I know it stopped me in my tracks and had me look up the address of my nearest Marshalls location…

Thursday as I was heading home from my job in DC I experienced another brilliant campaign for Marshalls Shoe MegaShop! A giant red stiletto car, and a bunch of cute guys with fab shoes on silver platters! They were all over Connecticut Avenue at every intersection passing out cards where one could win a shoe wardrobe from Marshalls. Brilliant contest cards where you have to visit your closest location to see if you have won.

Click on photos to see them larger...

And so, Allie headed to
Marshalls on her way home!

I didn’t win a shoe wardrobe, but I was impressed with the shoe collection in their MegaShop. The perfect shoe for fall – a pointy-toed black patent high-heel pump was available from popular brands like BCBGirls and Impo for far less than department stores. Amazing riding boots from Coach and Cole Hahn, oxford booties from Nine West, round-toe flats from Aerosoles and more were there at reasonable prices (and with plenty of sizes available!). If I was currently plagued with swollen pregnant feet, I would have been grabbing boxes left and right!

It’s awesome to see a company not only get their marketing right, but also their product. I commend Marshalls for a job well done – and an awesome place to find current footwear styles and hot brands for less!

Kinda icky and humid out today - not cold enough for a coat, but too cold for summery pieces. Today has been BUSY at work, but the good kind where you leave the day feeling productive and accomplished. Speaking of which, BACK TO WORK! :)

Lip Gloss Review - Bare Escentual Buxom Lips, L'Oreal Infallible Never Fail

Bare Escentuals Buxom Lip GlossBare Escentuals Buxom Lips in Dolly: I know that glosses are on their way out and the new (old?) thing is lipsticks and stains. Call me old fashioned or dated, but I feel my face was MADE for smoky eyes and a glossy lip. So though the world is purchasing sticks of products, I am still looking for Nirvana with a Wand.

My ultimate lip gloss is not MAC’s Lip Glass. I like enough tackiness to last more than 15 minutes but would rather have it wear off than be all in my hair and teeth. I like shine, but I don’t want to look as though I have patent leather lips. I don’t want sparkle – a touch of shimmer is fine but plain shine is best for an office environment. Finally I want that perfect nude/mauve/pink/taupe color that is me only better.

I think I have found the closest to Nirvana with a Wand with Bare Escentuals’s Buxom Lip Polish, in the shade of Dolly. Seriously, I am loving this stuff…

PROS:
• It has a menthol tingly formula but smells like cake batter
• My lips don’t get dried out – in fact I think this product hydrates and protects!
• It is shiny in a sophisticated/classic way – no porn or teenager lips here!
• The wand is plump enough to give good coverage and shaped well enough for touch-ups sans mirror; the packaging is well made, study and attractive
• The color is natural yet enhanced, no sparkle, yet plenty of healthy cool-toned neutral shine
• It wears away gently, leaving lips soft and no ring-around-the-lips
• Color – a pinkish mauvey taupey shade – very similar to Nars Dolce Vita, but a twinge darker (one of those shades that looks good on 70% of the population)

CONS:
• It lasts a max of two hours and that is without licking lips, eating, talking or moving
• Supposedly it plumps your lips – yeah have never experienced that (but never have seen it work with DuWop Lip Venom or any of the other plumping products on the market)

Yeah, pretty obvious from this pro/con list that I find it a worthwhile purchase even though it doesn’t last too long or turn me into Angelina Jolie. It’s just an elegant, comfortable and enjoyable lip product that does what I have been wanting for several months.

L'Oreal Infallible Lip GlossL'Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipgloss in Coral Sands: I am a sucker for L’Oreal – for years I have found their products to often be just as good as department store brands, and I usually have luck with colors even though there aren’t testers at my local Target or CVS. Their concealers have been a staple in my train case since high school, and I never have issues with breakouts or irritation with their formulas.

On top of that, I have been a sucker for long-wearing lip products since I got busted using my mom’s credit card in 9th grade to order Lasting Kiss from an infomercial. To have long wear, gloss AND L’Oreal in one product, I thought I very well may find that Nirvana with a Wand.

Notsomuch.

The color Coral Sands was very pretty for weekends or days when I want a lighter lip. The color is more pale than what it seems in the tube – on my lips it almost clear, with a slight tan/peach hue. There is a bit of shimmer, but nothing a 14-year old would get excited over. Very wearable for pale complexions and those who want a light nude lip.

The packaging is meh – the wand is large and triangular and floppy. If you press too hard the wand will bend and cause a bit of a mess. Not great for mirror-free touch-ups. Also I can tell that the slightly hourglass shape of the tube means I will have a hard time accessing the last bit when I beginning to run out (HATE that). And it claims to have a mirror, but the mirror is just a super shiny bottom of the package that doesn’t really show anything (remember the mirrors in Barbie furniture? Yeah, about as good as that).

As for the formula? Not very smooth going on – ends up applying very thin. It’s very sticky when first applied, but seems to dry in a strange manner. It does last longer than most glosses, but loses it’s shine and thickness. The product dries my lips out to no end, leaving them raw and chapped. It also doesn’t wear away well – it feels as though it is still on your lips but is gone except for some weird globules in the corners or at the bow.

PROS:
• Lasts longer than traditional glosses
• Decent price tag
• Neutral color that can work for day/office

CONS:
• Feels gross
• Doesn’t stay in place
• Dries out lips
• Bad packaging

All in all pretty worthless. I’d rather tuck my Buxom Lips in my pocket for discreet touch-ups after lunch than deal with grody lips all day.

Well good news on the home front - the co-op approved our addition last night and supplied our contractor with a permit. Now we need approval from the county but that isn't a biggie at all - they know our town and co-op to be so anal they just sign it. This morning as I left for work, there were guys in my back yard digging holes for the footings/foundation/technical stuff to keep my new rooms from caving in. Contractor said the work will be done before Christmas. Talk about the best present EVER! :)

Meme - Tagged!

I have been tagged a lot lately for awards and memes and I apologize for not doing them. Work has been very busy and I just haven't had the time I would really like to blog. However the utterly fabulous Weasel at La Belette Rouge tagged me for one JUST as I was having lunch so I decided to play!

Eleven Things About Me:

1. Clothes Shop: Banana Republic (shocker… can’t wait until I can shop there again!)

2. Furniture Shop: Oooh good question. Haven’t bought furniture in so long, I am looking for recommendation as that we hope to get a new couch and dining table with the remodel!

3. Sweet: In small doses and only for special occasions, I love Lindt’s white chocolate truffles. Right now I have been craving Breyers Chocolate Crackle ice cream – it is their classic vanilla with little bean flecks, but has ribbons of chocolate (like Magic Shell) through it. Tres yum!

4. City: Charlottesville, VA. My husband and I visited a year or so ago and it was a wonderful trip – great food, great music, great history, great nature activities and great people.

5. Drink: San Pelligrino with fresh lime and crushed ice. If I weren’t pregnant I would be talking about Grey Goose vodka and bold red wines. But lately sparkling waters and seltzers are my indulgence.

6. Music: Like Weasel, I too adore Morrissey! I have adored him since high school. My boyfriend at the time was a huge huge Morrissey/Smiths fan and we went to see Morrissey at Merriweather Post Pavillion. We had great seats and brought daisies and homemade tee shirts to throw at him on the stage. He picked up and smelled the daisies we threw! Swoon!

Other than that, my classic two favorite bands are REM and Pearl Jam – I obviously went to high school in the early ‘90s, huh? I also have a big place in my heart for women rockers who write powerful lyrics.

7. TV Series: I DVR Project Runway, America’s Next Top Model and How I Met Your Mother. When it’s running, I am also a Lost addict.

8. Film: The Thomas Crown Affair – seen both but love the more recent one most. Just saw it last week and I still adore it - the clothes, the story, the locations, the people... oh so lovely! Rene Russo in Celine is perfection!

9. Workout: Yoga, duh!

10. Pastries: Wow, that’s a tough one. I am not a huge pastry person. My dad used to get me a Boston Cream Pie for my birthdays when I was a kid so I have a soft spot for them. I do love a well-made macaroon and lately have had cravings for dark chocolate-covered graham crackers.

11. Coffee: Haven’t had much lately other than huge cravings for a java chip frappucino from Starbucks. Before I was carrying around spawn, I liked plain iced coffee, good diner coffee with one Splenda and a touch of cream, and occasionally a little seasonal latte from Starbucks. But really, I like my coffee simple, hot and fresh.

Okay, your turn! I am nominating La Femme Couture, Christina's Favorite Things (seems appropriate!), Things a Boutique Owner Sees, and Notes from the Laundromat.

Monday

I actually ended up adding my Banana Republic Outlet collarless black ponte jacket and my gray print shawl as a scarf since it was so cold. Went for my monthly appointment and the nurse said I was a sassy pregnant diva - felt nice, considering my hair was acting crazy because I rushed and used my husband's cheapo Suave shampoo instead of Pureology (yes, shampoo can make a MAJOR difference - sometimes it's cheaper to get better shampoo than to get more regular of hair cuts!)

Attire:
Old Navy Petites - Black ponte trousers
Old Navy Maternity: Gray jersey top
Target: Silver and bead necklace
Diamond Nexus Labs - Diamond solitaire studs
Silver cuff
Sudini - Black leather booties

Hair:
Washed night before
In morning, put big sections in curling iron and used fingers to loosen curls.

Beauty:
Laura Mercier: Flawless Face Kit in Sand (minus tinted moisturizer)
L'Oreal: True Match foundation in C3, HIP cream eye liner in Black, Infallible Lip Gloss in Coral Sands
Napoleon Perdis: Long Black Mascara
Pop Beauty: Rust and Khaki shadows blended on lid
Nars: Blush in Orgasm
Smashbox: Soft Lights in Tint

Appointment went well - all seems healthy thus far. Will be taking my dreaded glucose test in the next week or so, but they are letting me take the version where you draw blood on an empty stomach, have breakfast, come back in two hours and redraw blood. Much better than the icky drink considering I have no problem with giving blood. Have my next appointment at the beginning of November and then i go to bi-weekly appointments.

Friday after work I met a friend in the city for dinner. Saturday went to lunch with my mom and her boyfriend, and then had a chill day at home doing mild housekeeping and watching movies with my husband. Sunday we went baby shopping - got the crib and mattress and finished up the registry. Exhausting! But I am glad it is finished. We haven't put together the crib yet, it is currently airing out at my mom's to get rid of any paint and chemical fumes.

As for the house, they may start as early as tomorrow. So excited and so READY! I am OVER this period of limbo and would love to know where the baby and I will be laying our head come late December/early January! Positive home vibes and thoughts would be seriously appreciated, as that this is really preying on my mind. With the economy, the current state of our old kitchen, the lack of space for a family at this point, etc. etc. it is a lot. Ugh. Can't wait until it is complete!!!
