Emerson

I haven't written about Emerson lately, but don't think she isn't top priority or always on my mind!

She is getting so big, she is half my height already.  She isn't crawling yet, but she is darn near close.  She can stand almost on her own - uses the coffee table or your legs for support.  She has two teeth and is doing a TON of "talking".  When she sees Ruckus she says "ha-ra" which of course I think is her saying "Hi Ruckus!"  She says mamamamamama when she is hungry or I walk away and dadadadadada when she sees my husband.  She is also starting to recognize sign language and does a backwards wave when she is hungry (sort of looks like the sign for milk).

Tomorrow is my husband's 35th birthday and he asked for a gift to have a day with his two ladies - me and E.  I took the day off work so we could have a family day.  We'll go out for breakfast, take a walk around the lake with Emerson in our new Ergo carrier, take a midday nap and then probbaly go out to dinner with friends and family.  Can't think of a better gift... for any of us! :)

Tuesday

This is my trusty black jersey wrap dress from Talbots, my black leather "Maryland" boots from Ros Hommerson, silver chain from Ralph Lauren, silver cuff bracelet with green stones from Anne Koplik Designs, silver earrings from Treehouse.

Makeup is Laura Mercier Secret Foundation, Estee Lauder Nutritious foundation in Intensity 3.0, Cargo Matte BeachBlush, Maybelline Shine Seduction in Blushed Bass, Body Shop shadows in Slate and Soft Black, Cover Girl LashBlast mascara in Rich Black, Avon Glimmersticks in Midnight.

It is colder today - sure feels like Autumn!  I even took out my green pashmina to ward off chill as I waited for the morning train!

Monday

Welcome back to work!

The weather is starting to get chilly, but I felt I could still carry off this dress.  It's my navy jersey dress from Soprano, I just added my black patent-buckle stretchy belt from Ann Taylor and my black patent T-straps from Sofft.  Silver cuff and hoops, natch.

Another late in the day office photo... it has been a hectic few days and next thing I know it's 3pm and I haven't taken my headshot.  Anyway, my hair was washed and conditioned, I added Bumble and bumble. Thickening Creme, then Frederic Fekkai Luscious Curls and scrunched.  Let it air dry.

Makeup is Estee Lauder Nutritious foundation in Intensity 3.0, Cargo Matte BeachBlush in Tenerife, Stila glossy lipstick in Amber, Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis, Maybelline UltraLiner in Black and Cover Girl LashBlast mascara.

Thursday through Sunday

Thursday:

This is my Pajama Equivalent outfit.  The pants are floppy linen blend and are now too big so they are comfy.  The sweater is very soft, and the scarf is cozy.  It is not the most flattering outfit, but it's a good outfit when I am running late, wish I could wear jeans or yoga pants to work and cannot, and also makes my air-dried curly hair look purposeful.  Pants from Gap, sweater from Ann Taylor Loft, scarf was a gift.  And yes, those are flip flops from J. Crew.  My tan sandals from Lands End were already at work.

And this is me near the end of the day, so makeup has worn away and hair is looking as crazy as the weather outside.  Traditional makeup, just used the olive shadow from the Revlon Colorstay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis.

Friday I wore my indigo wool cardigan, a white tank, my black pants from New York & Company and my black patent T-straps from Sofft.  Those pants are a bit big now as well (constantly morphing postpartum body).  I spent the larger part of the day hiking up my pants.  Another reason why you see me in dresses all the time - they work with a constantly shifting midsection!

Saturday was my husband's cousin's son's 4th birthday so we headed to their house for the festivities.   A Thomas the Tank Engine set of Duplo blocks were well received, and the Birthday Boy and I enjoyed playing with another of his new toys - a classic Slinky.  Didn't go down the stairs as well as I remember as a kid but we had a good time putting forth the effort.  I wore my black New York and Company pants again, but they were held up by my blue print tunic from Nordstrom (and a black cami from H&M underneath for modesty).  Silver chain from Ralph Lauren, silver hoops and cuff.  Hair was washed the night before and just tamed with a curling iron and some Jonathan Silky Dirt.

Sunday we relished in not having to leave the house.  My sister came over in the morning and my husband made us a big breakfast.  Mid-afternoon nap and lot of time playing with Emerson and enjoying a day of actual rest.  Flannel pajama pants, a knit cami with a tissue-weight tee over it was my style for the day.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Yesterday... ya'll didn't miss much.  My tunic top from Language Loss Angeles, my Essential jeans, tan sandals, silver jewelery, second-day hair.  No pics.

Here is today... warmer day than we have had in a bit so eeking out the last few times I can rock the summer sandals and dresses...

Purple print jersey knot-front dress from Muse (that I saw for like a third of the price at Marshall's the other week), tan sandals from Callisto, silver earrings from Treehouse, silver necklace and hoops.

Here I am just now in my office... this is the air-dry look, a mix of Federik Fekkai's Luscious Curls and Bumble and bumble. Styling Creme, scrunched and left alone.  Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, Estee Lauder Nutritious foundation, Cargo Matte BeachBlush in Tenerife, Revlon Colorstay shaodw quad in Neutral Khakis - the olive on lid and along lash line, Avon Glimmersticks in Black, Cover Girl LashBlast mascara in Rich Black and there WAS Maybelline Shine Seduction in Blushed Bass on my lips, but that was pre-breakfast. :)

This Weekend and Monday

I did leave the house this weekend... but never ended up capturing a photo (though added a very blurry photo of me on Saturday).

Friday night I was supposed to go to a friend's party but I didn't get home from work until almost 8pm so I went straight into Baby Bedtime mode and was too exhausted to do anything afterwards.

Saturday we went to a relative's son's first birthday party, and then that night we went out to dinner with friends. After dinner everyone hung out at our house.

For the birthday party I wore my black pants from New York & Company and a bright blue top from Banana Republic, silver jewelery and my black patent heels from Sofft - have learned to wear pants at kiddie parties so I can get on the floor with Emerson. When I got home I switched to my purple print jersey dress from Muse because it's more comfy and I did end up with kiddie mess (cake, etc.) on my pants.

Here's a blurry picture of me with Emerson at the birthday party...

Sunday, we went to my sister's house for a late lunch. Very very casual day so just wore a hot pink long-sleeved scoop tee from Old Navy with a pair of olive chino shorts from Gap and my New Balances.  We walked to her house and then took a nice walk around town on the way home.

So on to the work week!

My red print matte jersey dress from Max Studio, black stretchy belt with patent buckle from Ann Taylor, my black patent T-straps from Sofft and red bead earrings which were a gift from my mom.

I didn't capture a picture of my face before I left work because I was in a super-duper rush and hair was not dry until I got to work. So this picture was JUST taken before posting, and as usual I am with headset, listening to a Webinar!  Sorry for the lighting, the room is SUPER bright and my blinds are currently broken and can't close.

Hair is my new product combo that I am liking - it is a dollop of Frederic Fekkai's Glossing Curls and a smaller dollop of Bumble and bumble. Styling Creme.  Emulsify together, scrunch into damp hair working from the back forward.  Let air dry.

Makeup is Estee Lauder Nutritious foundation in Intensity 3.0, Nars blush in Orgasm, Burt's Bees tinted lip balm in Fig, Revlon Colorstay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis, Maybelline UltraLiner in Black, Cover Girl LashBlast mascara in Rich Black.

Feeling cute today - a stranger told me she wanted my hair, and a gentleman in Starbucks told me I was looking lovely today.  Happy Monday!

Thursday

Oh yeah baby, I found another pair of boots that fit over these calves!  I will be doing a full review very soon, but do know that they are the "Maryland" from Ros Hommerson; they are from Wide Widths, a Web site that offers a fantastic selection of wide calf boots (and also offers amazing customer service!).  Anyway, they are a bit tall for me and I am wondering if a cobbler may be able to hack an inch off the top so they would fit right and be a more flattering height on my leg.  Hrm...

So this is me in my purple print tunic/dress from Ann Taylor Loft, my new black boots, silver necklace from Ralph Lauren and cute silver earrings I got this summer at Treehouse, a store in Rehoboth Beach.

Hair is second day, all I did was brush out any bedhead.  Makeup is Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, Estee Lauder Nutritious foundation in Intensity 3.0, CARGO Matte BeachBlush in Tenerife, Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis, Benefit lipstick in Bouquet Dive, Avon Ultra Luxury eye liner in Black and Cover Girl LashBlast mascara.

FYI, I probbaly won't post tomorrow because I will have to be at work at 6am.  I KNOW!  But hey, the weekend is right around the corner!!! :)

How to be a Stylish Mom

Before I became a parent, I wrote about ways to make it easier to be stylish and be a mom. I usually got attacked by current moms saying I was unrealistic and didn’t know how it was.

Well now I do. My daughter is eight months old, I work full time out of the home, I have a lengthy work commute, assist my husband with his photography business, manage three blogs, spend free time with friends and family. It isn’t easy, but it can all be done while looking stylish and not breaking the bank. Here are some tricks I have learned over the past few months that have helped me look pulled together without tearing out my hair or blowing my budget:

1. Get a Wash and Wear Hairstyle… or at least a style that you can manage half-asleep and in the dark. This doesn’t mean you need to chop off all your hair or live in a ponytail, it just means you need to reassess your mane. For me, this meant I needed to stop trying to straighten my hair or get the tousled waves all the celebs wear and I covet. I have naturally wavy/curly hair that likes to part in the middle. I researched online during lunch hours to find products well-reviewed for hair like mine that work when the tresses are air-dried. With my next cut, I let my stylist know I was going the more natural route and she trimmed accordingly. I now have a style that I can wash, condition, add a bit of product, scrunch and go. If I wish to have it be more polished, I whip out a curling iron and a second product.

For you, it may be a style that can be achieved with five minutes of a wet-to-dry flat iron, or one that uses some molding mud, your fingers and a hot blast of the dryer. Whatever it is, stop trying to reinvent the wheel every morning, trying to make your hair something it isn’t. Work with what nature gave you and you can spend less time with the styling tools, less time in a messy ponytail and more time with your child.

2. Buy the polish. All the magazines say in this time of recession, do your own pedicure. What mom has the time to whip out the orange stick, the cuticle cream, the top coat… and who can do it without little fingers wanting to help or investigate? A pedicure at the local nail spa is a cheap and quick way to decompress and have some Me Time. However, moms don’t usually have the time or the funds for Me Time as often as they did pre-family. I have found I can extend a pedicure far longer than I used to with a couple supplies. A daily swipe of clear topcoat will keep chips at bay. Owning the polish color will help when you do get a chip, and will also hide growth. Wearing slippers or socks around the house instead of bare feet will prevent your carpets or hardwood floors from absorbing the natural oils in your feet, and putting a bit of Vaseline on your feet at night will keep your feet looking soft (and if you have your slippers near your bed you can slip into them without slipping across the floor as you bolt up to the sound of a crying child).

As for the hands… I find it’s best to keep them bare and buffed. I love Sally Hansen Hand Repair Hand Nail & Cuticle Cream – I keep a tube in my purse and apply it to my hands (and the excess to my elbows) while I am waiting for the train, stuck in traffic, after washing my hands. It absorbs quickly so I am not too greasy to wield a steering wheel, has a mild orange scent and does a great job at keeping my hands looking soft. That plus a buffing cube can keep your hands looking lovely without trying to maintain a full manicure.

3. Create a uniform. So what if you wear jewelneck cardigans, lace-trimmed camisoles and flat-front trousers almost every day? If the outfit flatters and is appropriate for your lifestyle, then do it. The most stylish women have uniforms. No one criticizes Carolina Herrera for her collection of crisp white shirts – in fact women dream of being as chic as she.
Stop trying for variety, and look for quality. Buy fabrics that you love and love you in return. Choose colors that make your skin look amazing and make you smile when you see them time and again. Find silhouettes that flatter and buy in bulk.

My mom uniform consists of dresses. I find them easy, flattering and fun. A wrap style makes it easy to nurse or pump. I can slip on a dress in the dark and know I will look polished for most any occasion. Fabrics like matte jersey and ponte glide over my curves and are easy to launder.

For some women, their uniform is a pencil skirt and cashmere turtleneck. For others, it’s a button-down shirt and dark jeans. Accept your body and your lifestyle. Stop and think about the pieces you already own that you constantly go to in your closet and drawers. Ask a trusted friend what looks best on your body and stock up on that style.

Stick to a certain color palette so that it is easier to mix and match. This way, you won’t need as many pairs of shoes, as many belts, as many bags, as many accessories. I am one to pair black or white with jewel tones, but many women love a warm palette of browns, creams and greens or a collection of grays and navys with rich colors of merlot, amethyst and teal. Find the palette that pleases and compliments you and feel free to purchase multiples when you find the perfect color as well as silhouette.

4. Keep that uniform for the rest of your look. What’s the point of a wardrobe of pencil skirts and cashmere turtlenecks if you don’t have go-to uniform shoes? Last year I loved in peeptoe pumps – I had them in leather, snakeskin, leopard print, patent and silk. I knew this style of shoe and the height of the heel worked with most of my dresses, skirts and trousers. Now that I have a baby to carry around, I am desire a shoe that is a bit more stable and wearable for long hours. I found a great T-strap from Sofft that came in a dark red patent and looked like a vintage shoe. I could wear it for hours and not feel any pain, and it looked great with trousers and dresses. Instead of looking for other silhouettes to add to my closet, I bought this same shoe in black and found a very similar silhouette from the same brand in a brown croco-embossed leather and had a shoe wardrobe to get me through all of summer and most of the fall.
Make a uniform with your accessories – it’s okay to wear the same earrings or necklace every day – stop thinking of it as boring and consider it your signature piece! Purchase a bag that looks great every day with your wardrobe (tip: a color will be more versatile than black or brown), and make sure that it has enough room for a few kid essentials.

5. Simplify your makeup bag. It’s totally okay to wear the same exact shadow, liner, mascara, blush and lipstick every single day. Buy a second powder and lipstick and keep it in your purse for touchups. I actually have a small mascara that was part of a Gift With Purchase and a second compact of my favorite concealer in my purse in case I don’t have time to complete a full face in the morning.

6. Get rid of Dry Clean Only. I don’t know about you, but I have a bag of clothes that need to go to the dry cleaners that is in the trunk of my car and it has been in there since June. At the end of the day, the last thing I want to do is head to the cleaners. I don’t want to waste the time, and I don’t want to spend the money.

Many fabrics state that they are dry clean only, but can be washed on the gentle cycle and hung up to dry. Matte jersey, poly crepe, merino wool, and most synthetics can survive a gentle tumble in the washing machine. Once or twice a month I wash these pieces and hang them in the hallway bathroom from the curtain rod. They get put back in the closet before the next time guests come to visit (yes, I often get dressed in that bathroom, picking right from the curtain rod).

Stick with fabrics that can take a bit of a beating through the day – I like items with stretch because they don’t crease, usually launder easily, and allow me to crawl on the floor with my daughter and not be all stretched out and weird-looking after little hands grab at my neckline or I sit at my desk for ten hours straight.

7. Be prepared. Keep a bag in your bag with essentials – a couple safety pins, a Tide-to-Go pen or Shout wipes, your makeup uniform, mints, an elastic to hold back hair when needed (like when holding your little one), feminine products, a band aid, pain reliever, etc. This bag then can move from purse to diaper bag and back with ease. Nothing ruins a look more than a boo-boo, so be ready for that dropped hem, spilled salad dressing or blister.

8. Accept your new life. I may still have an active social calendar, but I am not hitting night clubs or cocktail parties like I used to. I don’t have the need for a dozen LBDs or a single garment with sequins. That being said, I have also realized that since I work outside the home and spend most evenings in my living room with my family, I have little need for more than one pair of jeans. Don’t purchase that which you don’t need and don’t hold onto that which is from a previous life. CraigsList, eBay, donate or gift away the items which you know you don’t need any more and make room for more pieces that are sensible yet stylish.

Even if you are a stay at home mom or a telecommuter, you shouldn’t be sporting flannel pajama pants and nursing tanks 24/7. It is possible to be comfortable and look great. Refined knits, matte jersey, ponte, merino wool… these are all fabrics that wash well, wear well and look polished.

9. Don’t write off fashion. You can carry off current trends while being true to your life. You may not have a need for over-the-knee boots, but you can totally rock knee-high boots with jeans or leggings and a slouchy sweater. The skinny jean may look fantastic with high-heeled booties or pumps, but they can also work with flats. Short dresses can work at the office or the café with opaque tights and boots or sturdy platform pumps.

And classic fashion is always chic – crisp white shirts like Carolina Herrera, solid-colored v-neck and turtleneck sweaters with flat-front trousers or pencil skirts, dark jeans with refined knits, sheath and wrap dresses in basic black or flattering hues, classically cut leather pumps, tall boots and traditional ballet flats.

10. Quality, not quantity! You can own one pair of jeans if they are made well and fit you like a dream. The same black v-neck sweater can be worn more than once a week if it is made of good quality and has an elegant drape. A higher-quality garment can handle being washed and worn time and time again.

Purchase bras that lift and separate, panties that are invisible under your clothes, shoes that look more expensive than their price tag. Spend money on your hair and skin so you can save time (and the cost of multiple beauty products that never work). The smaller your collection, the easier it is to dress every morning.

Wednesday

Amazing how good one can feel with a full night's sleep!  Emerson went to bed around 8pm, I went to bed at 9:30, and E didn't wake until 4:30am!  She hasn't slept that long in a couple of months (since she started teething).  She spent yesterday with my mom and I think she had a very active day of trying to crawl, rolling and visiting with neighbors.  I think sleeping with the windows open is also helping - she is lulled to sleep by the sound of crickets.

So this is me with a full night's sleep and enough time to Stitch Witchery my new pants!  I usually hem pants myself with needle and thread, but I didn't really have the time this AM and with these pants being the fabric that they are (nice weight, not silky, not too thin and not lined) I knew Stitch Witchery would do just fine.  In fact, I also used some Stitch Witchery on the slash pockets so they didn't gape open.

Ivory and black print jersey wrap top from Ann Taylor, black camisole from H&M, black trousers from New York & Company, black strappy slingbacks from Banana Republic, my standard silver jewelry.

For my hair, I washed and conditioned, and then mixed a combo of Bumble & bumble Styling Creme and Frederic Fekkai Glossing Curls together, put in wet hair and scrunched.  When it was 90% dry, I used my diffuser on it to get it fully dry.  This gave it some body since my new shampoo seems to be leaving my hair a bit limp when I air-dry.  Finally I took the curling iron to the front to soften the curls in the bangs and give some shape.

Makeup is Estee Lauder Nutritious foundation in Intensity 3.0, Cargo Matte BeachBlush in Tenerife, Estee Lauder shadow in Tea Biscuit, Body Shop shadow in Soft Black, Avon Luxury liner in Black, Cover Girl LashBlast mascara in Rich Black and Bare Escentuals Busom lip gloss in Dolly.

I haven't worn this top in quite a while and figure I need to give it some play before it is too cold to wear it.  The black version of this top will be a wardrobe staple through the winter as that it could be a cute Night on the Town sort of piece, but this print is too daytime for such a role.

I almost returned these trousers after finding the cheapo black pants at Marshall's.  However these are longer (I bought the "Average" length and hemmed a touch more than the width of the current hem because Petite was too short) and I think they will look far better with boots this winter.  They have a nice drape and keep a crisp ironed seam down the front.  They have plenty of stretch which makes them comfortable and keeps them looking nice throughout the work day.  Right now trousers are Buy 1 Get 1 50% off at NY&Co.

By the way, when trying to find the name of the Estee Lauder shadow I am wearing today (which came from a Nordstrom GWP), I came across the blog, My Gift With Purchase.  A good picture of each GWP, full description and link to purchase.  How utterly brilliant!

The Self-deprecating Comment

There is nothing more unattractive than a woman who says she is unattractive.

A woman usually claims she (or that which she is wearing or that which she said or made) is unappealing because, A. she is begging for attention and compliments (“oh no it’s true, you ARE utterly fabulous!”), but is usually because, B. she doesn’t trust and love herself enough. Either way, it’s not charming, it’s not stylish, and it’s not attractive.

Accepting a compliment will not make you look like a snob or self-absorbed. When someone says they like your blouse, thinks you look thin or feels that a certain color is flattering with your skintone just say thank you.

And smile.

And really mean it.

Be thankful that a person in your world took time from their day to notice you and let you know that they are pleased with what they noticed. Be gracious. No need to go on about how the blouse should have been donated years ago, that you are in desperate need of a root touch-up, that you are so bloated from binging on French fries the night before or that your dress clings to your hips. When you shoot down a compliment with a self-deprecating comment it is as though you are refusing a gift. It is okay to accept that gift, the person wasn’t forced to give it to you, offer your thanks and carry it with you for the day. You deserve it.

Many women think that compliments aren’t truthful. Yes, mean-spirited backhanded compliments make for great comedy in chick flicks, but they aren’t doled out that often in real life. People just don’t have the time and the wit to think them up and give them at the opportune time. So maybe Linda your coworker is telling you that your hair down is flattering because she thinks that your usual ponytail is too severe for your soft features. It’s still a compliment, and she didn’t have to take the time to say anything in the first place.

When you tuck a self-deprecating comment into casual conversation, it only causes your audience to scrutinize you. You mention how you have crooked teeth, and now your audience will concentrate on nothing but your teeth. You joke about how you are “pleasantly plump,” and now your audience has forgotten what you are saying and is focusing on your midsection.

Women often think it’s better to laugh at themselves before another will laugh at them. Again ladies, we do not live in an episode of Gossip Girl. The world is not out to snark about you behind your back. When you make self-deprecating comments, you are screaming to the world that you are self-conscious, lack confidence and love for yourself. Not attractive characteristics.

Be confident, don’t be a snob.
Be strong, but don’t be a bitch.
Be demure, but be definite.
Care about what you look like and others assume you are hiding behind clothes.
Don't what you look like and others assume you lack self confidence.

Wow, it’s tough being a woman, isn’t it?

Stop trying to BE smart or funny or witty or cerebral or stylish or classic or fun or artsy or creative or quirky. Just be. When you stop trying to be SOMETHING and just listen to yourself, observe your world and roll with the waves, you find that there is less need for the armor of self-deprecating comments.

With the next compliment you receive, respond with a heartfelt thank you and a smile. And nothing else. Don’t explain, don’t apologize, don’t add detail. Just look the person in the eye and thank them for the gift. See how that person reacts and how you feel. Wear that gift of a compliment like a scarf all day. Let it show in your posture, your demeanor.

The next time you trip over your words (or over your feet), don’t tell the world that you are a klutz, an idiot, a mess. Just pull yourself together and more forward. In your mind you may be replaying the situation over and over, but don’t cause the rest of the world to hit instant replay and dwell on your mistake.

And if you want a compliment or a suggestion, stop fishing for one with a self-deprecating comment. Find a good friend and ask that person what they think. How do you really look in that dress? Why do I have a hard time looking good in photographs? Do you think I look better in green or red? Only then will you know if the response is honest, or stated to make you feel better. Trust the feedback from those who care about you, and use it to develop and gain confidence and poise.

And remember, you ARE a fantastic human being! You have wonderful exterior and interior traits that make you unique and charming and loveable. Surround yourself with people and things that make you feel and look good and you will need less self-deprecating comments.

Tuesday

I had to get to work VERY early so these pictures are in the dark... also my mom took the full-length one and she is great with a SLR but terrible with a point and shoot...

So I am wearing my black jersey wrap dress from Talbots and black patent T-straps from Sofft.

My jewelery is new and from Anne Koplik Designs.  This is the coolest necklace in a burnished gold with matching earrings.  I mentioned to Anne Koplik that I have a pretty thick neck and can't usually wear 17" necklaces and 18" necklaces look like chokers on me.  They extended the length of this necklace for me.  how utterly awesome is that???  I will be having some other fabulous pieces from Anne Koplik Designs that I will be wearing in future posts.

So anyway, my hair and makeup.  Hair is next day; I brushed it out and then used a curling iron on sections to add some wave.  Makeup is Laura Mercier Secret Camoflauge, Estee Lauder Nutritious foundation, Nars blush in Orgasm, Clinique shadow duo in Like Mink, Avon Luxury eye liner in Black, Cover Girl LashBlast mascara in Rich Black and Stila glossy lipstick in Amber.

Whew, it's hard to get out of the house on time when the Spouse has already left for work!  My mom came to pick up Emerson to watch her for the day and also took me to the Metro.  Of course just as we were ready to put E into the carseat, she pooped.  And moms who remember the transitional period between just breast milk and eating solids know that this is not a quick diaper change.  Luckily I scheduled myself to be a bit early so I ended up showing up at the office only two minutes after I said I would.  Again, thank goodness for a closet of dresses! :)

Monday

This morning was an early one - my husband had a photo shoot up near the Maryland/Pennsylvania border, I had to get Emerson ready for my mom to watch her, and my sister and I stopped by a house in DC en route to work to pick up a Craigslist score (gosh Craigslist is the BEST when you have a baby!). Nothing better than a closetfull of dresses for days like this!

This is a newish dress from Soprano which was originally $65 but I got for $24.99 at Filene's Basement.  I have worn it previously with my black belt and will probably wear it like that next week, but today felt like rocking my new necklace.  This is actually two necklaces put together.  They were $6.99 each at New York & Company and I bought them about a week ago. In fact, I bought about five necklaces that day once I found out they had so many cool clearance pieces of jewelery.  Tan sandals from Callisto and my smaller silver hoops and silver clutch.

Hair is the Bumble & Bumble Thickening Creme, dried upside down with a paddle brush,a dn then ends in a curling iron.  Not thrilled with the final result - a bit frizzy and dry looking in places.  However it may be due to a change in my shampoo and conditioner (got a chance to try the new L'Oreal EverPure line and will soon be reviewing it in detail).

Makeup is Estee Lauder Nutritious mineral foundation in Intensity 3.0, Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in SC-2, Nars blush in Orgasm, Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis, Benefit Her Glossiness in Next Question Please, Maybelline UltraLiner in Black and Cover Girl LashBlast mascara in Rich Black.

The weather is AMAZING in the Nation's Capital - the type of fall weather I dream about.  It has been great to have all the windows open - Emerson doesn't need any white noise to fall asleep because she has the sounds of crickets!  My husband and I keep calling it New England Weather (he calls it East Aurora, I call it Maine - these are places we used to visit as kids) because it is so crisp and cool and it just smells like those locales!

This Weekend

Saturday our good friend was hosting a festival at a local bar and grill and my husband was there to photograph the event (and partake in the complimentary beverages).

My mom, her boyfriend, my sister and I went - and yep Emerson came along for the ride!  This is E with moi and my sister.

And yes, I am wearing the same cardigan I wore on Thursday with a different white tank and a pair of jeans.  Casual affair, casual attire.  Makeup and hair were minimal because I was in quite a dash to get going.
Saturday night we stayed in and relaxed and I even got in a nap that day.  My kind of weekend!
Sunday we did a whole heck of a lot of nothing which was LOVELY.  I didn't change from a dark red nursing tank from Bravado and a pair of black yoga pants from Old Navy.

Emerson will be crawling any day now so we gave her plenty of floor time.  She loves figuring out that she can move and I caught a few pictures of her completley delighted in being able to scoot around, lie on her back and push off from the furniture, etc.  Hubby made a delish breakfast and dinner and we had an early bed time.
Just what we needed after so many weeks and weekends of long hours and social engagements!

Last Thursday

Attire:
Marshall's - Indigo merino cardigan sweater (some brand with Carolle in it and it was less than $20)
Gap - White ribbed tank
Marshall's - Random black pants I got for $16.  Nothing spectacular - not lined, no pockets but they are machine washable and did I mention only $16?  Oh, and they fit this weird postpartum body?
Banana Republic - Black leather strappy slingbacks
My silver necklace and cuff

My hair is... I think it was wet in this picture and I don't have a face shot to describe my makeup but it wasn't anything terribly inventive.  A pretty basic and boring outfit, though I am loving this indigo/bright navy color lately.  Bright enough to contrast with black and I think a pretty good color with my complexion.

No picture on Friday, I wore my ivory top with the printed trim from Language Los Angeles (which is on sale at Nordstrom) and a pair of jeans.  It was rainy out.  Bleh.

Wednesday

Right now the sun is shining in the Nation's Capital but this morning was pretty gray and rainy.  Searching and I cannot find a ray of sun...

This is the outfit I wore to my friend Shelly's rehearsal dinner - the $24/originally $118 Max Studio dress, with my Ann Taylor stretchy belt with the patent buckle and my Sofft black patent T-straps.  With it I am wearing these red ball earrings that my mom bought me when she went on an African safari a couple years ago.  The dress washed great - I adore matte jersey.  Threw it in the washer on the gentle cycle with a bit of Crunchy Clean diaper detergent (doesn't suds up like regular detergent so great for delicates and low-spin cycles), hung it to dry and it was ready to wear the next morning!

I did the makeup in the same manner than I did on Friday night, and since it's not hot out, it has held up quite nicely all day.  I did a quick touchup of lipstick before lunch but otherwise have looked fresh and polished.

Speaking of lunch, we had a business lunch today at Founding Farmers and it was awesome!  I had heard amazing things about this restaurant and was not disappointed!  If you are in DC you should check it out!

Wet and Soggy Tuesday

It's not just the pavement that it wet - it is me who was running late and left the house with wet hair.  I know, I despise when people do this and then I do it myself.  Do know by time my sister dropped me off at the corner where my office building is located, I was nice and dry and full of springy curls!

I also don't love these shoes with this dress - I can totally see a round-toe platform pump, tights and booties or even a sleek pair of tall boots.  However I am working with what I have and this is currently what I have.  Bah.

So this is my new dress from Ann Taylor Loft.  Not until I found the link to it online did I know it was supposed to be a tunic - eh well that shoes you how petite I am!

With it I am wearing brown croco T-strap heels from Sofft, my silver bead necklace from H&M, silver hoops and cuff and a silver chain with my wedding band that still does not fit on my finger.

And my hair is wet.  It was washed and conditioned with Pureology, and then I added Frederic Fekkai's Glossing Curls and scrunched.  If I leave it completely alone (no dryer, no fingers, no nada) I end up with soft and shiny ringlets.  So it looks hein here, but was lovely by 9am.
Makeup is Estee Lauder's Nutritious mineral foundation in Intensity 3.0, Cargo's Matte BeachBlush in Tenerife, Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis, Cover Girl LashBlast mascara in Rich Black, Avon Luxury Liner in Black, and Benefit Lipstick in Bouquet Dive.
This dress really makes me look forward to fall fashion.  I am a summer girl and feel as though this summer completely passed me by, but the jewel tones and print in this dress make me dream of tall boots and suede!

Wedding Weekend!

This past weekend my dear dear friend Shelly got married and I was her Matron of Honor! It was a fun-filled couple of days and Shelly was a gorgeous bride!

I took off work Thursday and Friday because I have been very tired and busy and wanted to be sure I could properly attend to my Matron of Honor duties AND have fun while doing it. Luckily those days were slow at work so Mr. Bossman was happy to let me take some PTO and get some R&R! Needless to say, no pictures from those days. I did exciting things like buy groceries, get my shoes for the wedding reheeled, get a brow wax and pedicure (OPI's I'm Not Really a Waitress), watch Emerson log roll her way from the living room to the dining room (no crawling yet but she is quite mobile with her DIY movement!).

Friday was the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. I wore a red print matte jersey dress from Max Studio (originally $118 but I got for $24 from Marshall’s) with a stretchy belt with black patent buckle that is from Ann Taylor, and my black patent T-strap heels from Sofft (BTW saw these in red at Marshall's when I visited this past week).

I knew I needed my hair slightly dirty for the next day to hold my Wedding Day ‘Do, so I washed and conditioned it, added some Bumble & Bumble Styling Crème and dried it upside down. Then I took big sections into my curling iron to create soft waves. I finished it with a small bit of Jonathan Silky Dirt.

Makeup was Philosophy The Present, Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in SC-2, Estee Lauder Nutritious mineral foundation in Intensity 3.0, Revlon ColorStay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis (the ivory in inner corners and a tough of khaki on the lids), their ColorStay lipcolor in Rich Raisin (my go-to red color), Cover Girl LashBlast mascara in Rich Black and Maybelline UltraLiner in Black.

This was a great look if we didn’t have an outdoor rehearsal. Dag, it was HOT! On top of that, my husband was taking pictures at it and I was being assistant so I was dashing to and fro getting people organized while taking care of Emerson. Needless to say by the end of the rehearsal my hair was a sweaty, scraggly mess and my makeup was almost completely gone (except for that amazing Maybelline UltraLiner!). We headed to the restaurant for dinner, and I headed straight to the bathroom where I attempted to comb my hair with a tiny claw clip (forgot my Sephora detangling comb which is usually a purse staple) and I used Urban Decay De-Slick and a fresh swipe of lipcolor to fix my face. This picture is from the rehearsal dinner – the Bride and I sharing Malibus and Sprites – the drink we shared the night we first met.

Emerson was getting slightly fussy because it was her bedtime so we headed home a bit earlier than the rest of the crowd. However it was a nice party – the Groom’s Mom and Step Dad hosted a lovely meal and fun time!

The next day I headed to the Bride’s hotel suite around 11am. We hung out, sipped champagne and got our ducks in a row until the hairdresser/makeup artist arrived. The bride and I had our hair and makeup done, she also styled the Flower Girl’s hair and helped apply lashes on the Mother of the Groom. I realized I forgot my necklace at home so my sister and husband arrived and brought it before heading to the ceremony. Whoops!

The Bride let me choose my own dress, and I found a lovely black matte jersey number from Calvin Klein at Macy’s. Unfortunately it seems this dress is no longer available anywhere for purchase; too bad because it’s such a cool style that can easily be dressed up and down (and it also came in blue). Also to be able to wear matte jersey is awesome – so comfy, great drape and easy to launder and alter! I had the straps shortened, the bodice tacked so I didn’t look like Pam Anderson on the Big Day, and a couple inches taken off the bottom.

I truly think I will be able to wear this dress again – I envision it with a bunch of gold bangle bracelets and some gladiator sandals. However for this day I only wore a necklace – my black Ann Taylor statement necklace. I had a few necklaces to choose from, including a current AT necklace that has pave and pearl baubles from a chain… but this necklace ended up giving the best effect (and didn’t make me look like Matronly of Honor). For shoes I wore my Banana Republic strappy kitten heels because it was an outdoor ceremony and I didn’t want spikes digging into the grass. Good thing also as that I had to walk down a long flight of stairs to get to the ceremony. Kick-step, kick-step kept me from tripping over my dress!

The lovely KC Felton did our hair and makeup – and yes, I got to wear individual lashes. I SUCK at applying false lashes myself so it was a very fun treat! All the makeup was MAC (except the mascara which was Cover Girl LashBlast!) and it did a great job at staying in place through the entire evening.

The wedding was AMAZING. My friend Shelly has magnificent taste and really planned a gorgeous affair. It was an outdoor ceremony in the most picturesque setting, and a reception in a wooden lodge with a large deck and stone fireplace. Her wedding was black and white with touches of spring green (hydrangeas, dendrobium orchids, etc.) which was a perfect accent to the natural setting. She looked amazing in a dress by Mikaella.

The bride and groom’s gift to me was a hotel room for the evening. Omigoodness, the first night with both parents away from Emerson! We had our great friends Jamie & Mike watch Emerson until my mom left the wedding – then she stayed at our house overnight with E. This meant we could party until the end of the affair and ALSO head out to the afterparty at a nearby bar! Here’s a picture of us parents getting wild and crazy and having more than one drink thanks to having a limo cart us around and drop us off at the hotel afterwards!
The wedding was amazing – everyone had so much fun and the couple was so cute. I adore my friend Shelly and she found a phenomenal man in Mike. They are great friends, a great couple, and I wish them a lifetime of happiness!

The next day we headed right home and missed the wedding brunch because we couldn’t stay away from Emerson any longer. She was awesome with her babysitters and when we arrived she was napping in her Pack and Play. Luckily she was feeling drowsy and snuggly that day so she happily napped with us while we recovered from the previous evening.

Sunday afternoon we went to our friend Gail’s house for her annual Labor Day Tiki Party. We took Emerson, and many other couples had their little ones. I don’t have any pictures from this day, but I wore a recently purchased dress from Ann Taylor Loft with black flip flops, a long silver bead necklace from H&M and my hair naturally curly/frizzy. Very simple makeup, sort of a casual/hippie/beachy look.
My husband was feeling like a party animal but after all the wedding hullabaloo and being sick the week prior, I headed home with E around 7pm. We took a bath, read a book or two and fell asleep within an hour. My husband was going to meet up with my sister and friends at the town fair, but it began to rain so he headed home. I got up to hang with him for a bit, but we both retreated to bed by 11pm.

Monday, my mom, her boyfriend and my sister started off early for the town’s Labor Day parade. Our town’s color is green so I wore a green short-sleeved sweater from Banana Republic with my Gap Essential jeans. Hair was second-day curly/frizzy/air-dry after the bath and the humid/rainy weather didn’t help things. This is a picture of me with Emerson at the parade.

Emerson was QUITE the hit at the parade, all the politicians wanted to hold her and get their picture with them! She loved the bagpipers best and was having a blast for almost the entire parade. She started to get a bit cranky/hungry toward the end so we headed back to my house where my husband had a big breakfast ready for us. The rest of Monday was spent at home – just me, Hubby and E.

All in all, quite a fantastic weekend!

Last Friday

Friday I had the day off. As you can see by the picture, my husband was pretty happy about it! This is a super casual outfit - we started the day by having breakfast with my mom (and Emerson of course!). We then ran a couple errands but spent the rest of the day together really low-key at home.

I am wearing an all-Gap outfit here. A white ribbed tank from this summer, a seafoam green cashmere tank that I bought on the clearance rack at Gap a couple years ago, and my Gap Essential jeans. Silver chain from Ralph Lauren, Reef "Sandy" flip flops.
Hair is next day, just brushed and done. Makeup is pretty basic - Cargo Matte BeachBlush in Tenerife, some Cover Girl LashBlast mascara in Rich Black, Stila Lip Glaze in Fruit Cake.
It was a much-needed brak to have the day off.  Life has been so hectic, I can't remember what day it is, and if something I remember is part of a dream, a book I read on the train or reality!  Luckily this coming weekend is a five-day one for me.  It also is the weekend of my dear friend's wedding and I am looking forward to it! :)

Please forgive any spelling errors - Blogger did an upgrade and no longer seems to have a Spellcheck function (UGH).  Also the photo upload feature is different so layouts will be a bit different as I play around and see what works for this blog!

What Next, Roll-neck Sweaters from Forenza?

Yesterday I visited my local mall in search of a necklace to perfectly complete a dress I am wearing this weekend. I must say, I don't visit malls very often. I find them frustrating - the selection of sizes are limited, the salespeople are often uneducated on their product (or uninterested in you shopping their store), and there is too much chance to purchase that which you don't need.

However jewelry (like lingerie) is best purchased in person, so I made the trek. While there, I decided to visit all the women's clothing retailers to get a feel for what is in season, what is selling, what is collecting dust, what chain shops are copying what high-end designers...

...and then I saw it.

The Limited is carrying Outback Red!

For those of you who were born in the '80s (or later) you may not understand the significance of this brand being at The Limited. However for moi who was born smack dab in the middle of the '70s, The Limited (and their brands such as Forenza and Outback Red) was a necessity in my closet (and the closet of all my friends). The Limited was a must-visit every time my friends and I went to the mall, and one of my prized possessions was my navy blue henley from Outback Red. I remember pulling it out to wear every time I was going to a casual event where I felt a bit awkward or shy (boy-girl party or first day of summer camp).

Along with other brands at The Limited, I remember Forenza sweaters being the hotness - at least a dozen of us from my grade wore the Forenza roll-neck sweaters in a variety of hues for our school photos (mine was white and I always wish I had a periwinkle blue one like my friend Krista). We also had letterman-style long cardigans with bright stripes or sleeves from Forenza and I know somewhere I have a "personality photo" from high school where my friends and I are all wearing deep v-neck tunic sweaters from The Limited in a variety of jewel tones.

Seeing the Outback Red sign in The Limited, I must say I exclaimed outloud, "Outback Red?" Jessica, a manager of the store (and actually a previous employee of mine back when I worked retail) said yes, they have brought back that brand as well as a few other brands. The goal of The Limited (and other chain brands such as Ann Taylor) is to create a boutique feel within the store by providing different brands that evoke different styles and feelings. Based upon the marketing in the store and the Flash "journal" on the Limited Web site, Outback Red is still the same concept, but updated for the new millennium - casual cool, an outdoorsy feel but with a romantic side.

So I joked to Jessica, "what next, Forenza roll-neck sweaters?"

"Yes," she said. "Forenza will be returning to The Limited this fall." I am armed and ready with my bottle of Aqua Net!
