Thursday

Thursday was Bring Your Emerson to Work Day...

My husband and Emerson showed up right after the Webinar finished so I could give them a tour of my office (and show off my baby).  I locked my computer and let her go crazy on the keyboard and she LOVED it.  My husband brought me a gorgeous floral arrangement of roses and snapdragons (my favorite).  We left work and went to our local sushi spot for Happy Hour:

Emerson loved the sushi rice and we also gave her some miso soup, and some avocado and cucumber rolls.

We came home, my sister came by a little later with carrot cake (another favorite) and we hung out for a bit until I was glamorous enough to fall asleep on the couch prior to 10pm.

It was a good birthday!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Today I am 35 years old, and I feel okay about it.  This morning when I was struggling to find something fun and "birthday-like" in my wardrobe I did feel a bit matronly.  I didn't like any of my clothes, my hair isn't acting nice, I feel as though I look... well like a 35 year old mom.  But then I got dressed and my sister took me to Starbucks and we had a fun commute to work and now I am on a Webinar and being inundated with happy birthday messages on Facebook and in email and I feel so much better.

By the way, I am wearing my new black tank with ruffles on it from Ann Taylor with a black drapey cardigan from Ann Taylor from like a decade ago that I found on a shelf in my closet, my NYDJ jeans and a pair of pewter snakeskin pointy-toed pumps I bought on clearance from Nordstrom like a year ago but haven't had the situation or foot strength (I lost all my high-heel tolerance when pregnant) to rock.  Well I am rocking them today and they make me feel less like a dumpy 35-year old mom and more like me.

So I indulged in a venti light java chip frappucinno which is helping me get through a very dry Web conference, and I look forward to seeing my husband and baby at 3:15 and an early release from work today.  Thinking sushi for dinner...

Life is pretty darn great!

This Week...

Monday:
- Black cowl neck sweater from Ann Taylor
- Black pencil skirt, also from Ann Taylor
- Black cami from Second Base
- Black tall boots from Ros Homerson
- Gold "twig" bangles and a hammered gold knot necklace (both from... shocker... Ann Taylor).  Wore the necklace under the cowl so it just peeked out a bit on the side
- Hair wavy/curly, slightly smoky eye

Tuesday:
- Teal shawl collar sweater from Banana Republic
- Black cami from Second Base
- Black trousers from Talbots (completely forgot I had these - put away my husband's dry cleaning and found them)
- Black city boots from David Tate
- Silver and green/blue cuff bracelet and earrings from Anne Koplik

Today:
Well I am right now with wet hair and in my husband's bathrobe but think I will be wearing my purple cowl neck sweater dress from Banana Republic and my black tall boots!  Better hop to it, I need to leave in less than 30 minutes to be at work on time.

Tomorrow is my birthday, and I have an INSANE day at work that starts at 7am and ends around 6 or 7.  Le sigh.  My husband is hoping he can stop by later in the day after my first meeting is finished so he can show off Emerson and maybe take me to a late lunch.  Best present ever!  After a year, we have yet to bring Emerson to the office and my coworkers are constantly on me to meet her.  Anyway, I am going to treat myself on my birthday to wearing jeans - very likely the new ones from Not Your Daughter's Jeans (man, if they WERE my daughter's jeans they would hardly fit my hand!).

New Additions...

While waiting for my sister to drive home on Friday (we commute to work together and we ended up leaving work at the same time Friday night) I stopped into Ann Taylor.

Added to the wardrobe:
- Fuzzy black cowl neck sweater (longer than my merino one, deeper cowl)
- Gray flannel trousers
- Black tank with ruffles on it (cute alone for a night out or under a cardigan or jacket for work or weekend)

All these items were on sale and I had a coupon for 30% off my purchase so it was $100 for all three.  Not too shabby for really nice pieces that are quite versatile.

I also received a pair of dark straight leg jeans from Not Your Daughter's Jeans that aren't too bad.  Very high rise and a bit too long, but I think they are quite flattering and I like the straight leg.  Review soon.  I also will soon be reviewing a cami I got from Second Base that I adore - wearing today and wore yesterday as well!

Saturday

Saturday I attended a baby clothing and goods swap in town so I wore my Long & Lean jeans from the Gap and a new black cowl-neck sweater I got off the sale rack at Ann Taylor on Friday night.  Paired with black city boots and hoops.

Saturday night I went out with friends.  I received a pair of Not Your Daughter's Jeans in a straight cut and very dark wash, black cami, my black ruffle cardigan from Caslon and a pair of gray shoes from... not sure the brand offhand but got at Nordstrom.  Couple silver necklaces and silver hoops.

I thought it would be nice to have a picture of me pigeon-toed... too bad I didn't have any leaves to throw over my head...

Here's a closeup of my shoes...

And here's how I felt at the last of the night... designated driver and a babysitter made Allie a very happy gal!

Thank You

I cannot believe the wonderful comments you all have written with my recent post. Each time one would show up in my Inbox I would be near tears.

I considered ending blogging all together at the end of 2009 and then I saw Julie and Julia. That movie inspired this household - it got my husband making poached eggs for Sunday brunch, and me knowing I had to keep blogging, even though I just don’t feel as though I currently have the time or spirit.

I may be pretty quiet now, but do know that I am not leaving forever. I love blogging, I love fashion, and I love the friendships I have made with you readers. You all mean so much to me – I may not know you in real life, but I feel as though I know many of you too – through your blogs, through seeing your same screen names pop up in comments, even through recognizing your “voice” through comments over the years. I am honored to be read by you through the years and thank you for sticking with me.

I will “see” you soon!

My Current Wardrobe

My current work schedule is unpredictable – I am at work when a client needs me which means I sometimes leave the house at 5am. Having a baby who still nurses and a husband I would like to see when not comatose by my side in bed, it doesn’t give me much time to think about creative outfits. My wardrobe has become more and more simple, and has become smaller to make a quick morning getaway all the more simple and with less room for style error.

This is the collection I am currently working with:

Skirts and Pants:

1. Black pencil skirt from Ann Taylor. It is a petite so it hits right at the top of the knee. The fabric looks like suiting but has a bit of Spandex to it so it keeps shape all day and works with my curvy body.

2. Black wide-leg trousers from Semantiks by Nordstrom. Unlined, nice fabric that looks good for work but can also be a weekend look. Crease down the front, wide waistband that lies flat. Reviews online said the petite ran long which was just what I desired – I am not petite but I am not regular so this made the trousers a perfect length for a 2” – 3” heel.

3. Dark Long and Lean jeans from Gap. I have them in petite to wear with my Bern boots and Chucks, and regular length to wear with my black city boots and heels. These are the dark color with a hint of spandex. They stretch out over the day but shrink back up in the dryer and look nicer than regular jeans for work.

4. Stonewash jeans from Seven (don’t know style, got on sale at Filene’s Basement). Slightly vintage details and a little hole in the thigh, bootcut, bit of Spandex. These are my casual jeans. They are a bit long with low boots or sneakers, but it’s not too bad since they are casual weekend jeans and it adds to a vintage/hippie vibe that I like.

5. Ivory tropical-weight wool wide-leg trousers from Talbots. These are petites, which makes them a hair too short with my taller heels, but work with my black city boots. Wide waistband so it lies flat, crease down the front.

6. Black bootcut trousers from New York & Company. I don’t like these. They haven’t worn well, they are a bit lumpy looking and look as cheap as their price tag. They are last resort trousers and are only worn with a cardigan or sweater that can cover the hip area. I plan to donate these once I find a worthy alternative.

7. Charcoal wool/cotton blend trousers from Ann Taylor. These have a fine pinstripe that looks blue when paired with blue, gray when paired with other colors. These stretch out funny if I have a long day where I am sitting a long time. Don’t love, don’t wear a lot. Like best with my black turtleneck or teal shawl collar sweater because those are more fitted and hit on the hips in a place that hides the stretching out.

Tops:

1. Gap crewneck cardigans in dark purple (Purple Martin) and raspberry (Rose). These are currently in the stores – some have contrast ribbon at the placket. The dark purple one has a black and white stripe placket, the raspberry one has a tonal one.

2. Various ribbed tanks. I have three white ones, one black, one gray, one dark purple (same color as the Gap cardigan), one olive.

3. Refined pima cotton tanks from Banana Republic. I have one in white, one in black. These are really nice and could even be paired with a suit as a proper shell. They wash great, and are far more work appropriate than a basic ribbed tank.

4. Navy waffle-knit shawl collar sweater from Ann Taylor LOFT. LOFT fans probably would recognize this sweater from the fall/winter collection. It’s comfy, cozy, but the navy color and flattering neckline make it a pretty choice for weekends. I usually pair it with a white ribbed tank.

5. Black merino crewneck from Banana Republic. I have had this for years. It has Spandex in it which gives it a nice shape.

6. Black merino turtleneck from Ann Taylor. It’s a floppy turtleneck – sort of a blend between a turtle and a cowl neck.

7. Taupe chunky cable-knit sweater jacket from Ann Taylor. Was in the stores this season, it doesn’t have a closure, sort of a dolman style. I usually wear it on weekends with an ivory pashmina around the neck, ribbed tank and jeans.

8. Gray fuzzy Kenzie cardigan. Long-time readers would know this sweater as that I bought it last winter and rocked the heck out of it while pregnant. It is too big for work, but I do wear it on weekends with jeans, a ribbed tank and a bunch of chain necklaces for a boho vibe.

9. Heather gray ruffle-trim cardigan by Caslon for Nordstrom. This had a self-belt but it hit at a weird place so I snipped off the belt loops and wear it sans closure. It’s the same color gray as my gray ribbed tank so it makes a sort of twinset

10. Same cardigan, but petite and in black. The petite hits at the right place and looks sassy with the self belt tied in a bow, cinching the cardigan. This gives it a peplum look at the hips.

11. Ivory jersey tunic with print trim by Language Los Angeles. I have had this for several months and wore it on this blog before. I accidently had it go through the dryer and now it’s not as crisp as it was so it’s now a Casual Friday or weekend top.

12. Teal blue shawl collar merino sweater from Banana Republic. Pretty standard sweater, wear with a black camisole. Great color, was only $27 in the store on New Year's Day and I also had a 15% off coupon.  Nice!

13. Indigo merino cowl neck from Ann Taylor. Has a slight teal/green tint so it contrasts enough to be paired with black.

14. Ivory Henley with taupe stripes from Gap. Not my normal color palette but I was drawn to it. A weekend top.

15. Pale yellow and gray striped v-neck cardigan from Gap. Gray is same color as my gray ribbed tank. Another item that is not my normal color palette but I like it.

16. Black cashmere puff sleeve sweater tee. I have had this for years, still rocking it from time to time.

Dresses:

1. Black matte jersey wrap dress from Old Navy. I have had this for years. Pretty standard.

2. Black jersey wrap dress from Talbots. I have had this for almost a year. A more flippy/feminine shape than the Old Navy dress.

3. Violet merino cowl neck sweater dress from Banana Republic.

4. Black ponte a-line dress from Muse. It has a print of peacock feathers on it. Too short for work, but fabulous for play. Wear to parties, to a rehearsal dinner, Date Night, etc.

5. Black matte jersey sleeveless surplice neck dress from Ann Taylor. Basic cocktail/wedding guest dress

6. Black matte jersey maxi dress from Calvin Klein. This was my Matron of Honor dress for my friend’s wedding in September. I then wore it in November for another wedding with gold sandals and big earrings. I wore the same look this very month for my company’s holiday party.

Footwear:

1. Black city boots from David Tate

2. Tan “Bern” boots from DUO

3. Black classic lowrise “Chucks” from Converse

4. Black patent round-toe Mary Jane pumps from Mee Too

5. Black leather tall “Maryland” boots from Ros Hommerson

6. Black leather delicate strappy kitten heel slingbacks from Banana Republic

As you see, it’s a pretty simple palette – not a lot of frou frou but nice pieces that work well together. I can wear the black ruffle-trim cardigan with my black skirt and tall boots and have a look that works for a casual client meeting; wear it with a white ribbed tank, dark jeans and black boots with necklaces for a trip to the mall; with a ribbed tank, casual jeans and chucks for hanging out at my friend’s house.

And you know me, tons of accessories. Scarves, necklaces, earrings, belts, tights, a funky printed clutch for evening. Totally transforms basics.

Note:  I still have lots of other clothes that you have seen, but I have packed them up or put them at the back of the closet because right now they don't fit my body or don't fit my wardrobe.  I just don't want them cluttering my space or mind when I am short on time.

What I would love to add to my wardrobe:

1. A pair of more rigid dark jeans with a straight cut

2. A new pair of black city boots with a sleeker heel and more sleek toebox

3. Another pima tank from Banana Republic in another neutral like dove gray

4. A dark denim pencil skirt

5. Another dress or two that has a more casual shape to it. Something to replace my short-sleeved merino dresses from Banana Republic (still have but are a bit tight right now). Optimum would be something of ponte in charcoal or a dark color like hunter or burgundy with an a-line silhouette and elbow-length sleeves.

6. Another sweater in a pretty color like candy pink or purple. Surplice neckline, deep cowl, some interesting neckline. A sweater I can wear with a skirt or trousers to work, or with jeans on weekends

7. Black sequined tank. Rock it alone with jeans, under my ruffled cardigan… something to jazz up what I already own

8. A black silky jersey blouson top – something maybe off the shoulder, drapey, slight shine to the fabric. A top I can wear with jeans and boots and some big silver hoops for a night out on the town, or even dress up with black trousers and pretty heels

9. Black leather platform peeptoe heels. Can wear now for a night out, can wear in spring to work as well as to play.

10. A silky jersey top with interest. Something with puffed sleeves, a wrap style, ruffle trim, pretty neckline or combo of these. In teal or berry or candy pink or jade. Something I could wear to work with a cami or out on the town.

Today is Friday, and I am wearing my black merino turtleneck, my Seven jeans, black city boots and a long necklace made of silver chain and an occasional big pearlized yellow bead (sort of looks like some type of stone but I think it’s just plastic), silver cuff bracelet, subtly smoky eyes, glossy pinky brown lips and hair wavy and casual. Can’t take a picture because all of the upstairs is dark – it is still dark outside and my husband and Emerson (and two of the dogs) are still asleep.

This weekend I have plans to go out with friends – it is my birthday next week, it was my sister’s birthday this week and our good friend’s birthday was on the 10th of this month. Not sure yet what I will wear, as that it’s not really peacock-print dress sort of locations… more like a jeans sort of evening. I may do the black ruffle-trim cardigan, the black pima tank and some fun silver jewelry and a smoky eye. If I get pictures from the night I will be sure to post!

But They’re Soooo COMFY!

Uggs seem to be popping into conversation left and right these days. A couple weeks ago, my sister had a movie night at her pad and people were discussing Uggs and how there isn’t anything else out there that is nearly as comfortable or warm on a cold winter’s day. That yes, they may be ugly but it’s okay since they are popular and so comfy.

Today I have been bombarded by invitations to join some group on Facebook where I may possibly get a free pair of Uggs mailed to my home.

My current Facebook status is that I, “[think] Uggs should only be worn as slippers and [do] not want a free pair shipped to [me] so please stop sending the group invites. Sorry folks, Uggs are NOT stylish, they are NOT cool. Yes, they are comfy but they are not proper footwear for out of the home. XOXO.”

I cannot believe how many responses I have received on this status.

I hate to tell you ladies this, but Ugg boots  are not proper footwear. Yes, they are all cozy and comfy and keep your tootsies toasty warm. But they are tacky, they are ugly and their original purpose is all they should be worn for – to be slippers.

I blame Paris Hilton, who started the look over a decade ago with her tattered denim minis and baby tees. But even so, Paris wouldn’t be caught dead these days in a pair of Uggs and neither should you. Uggs are tacky, they are ugly, they are passé. No woman with style would dare step foot out of her house in a pair of Uggs (inside your house is a completely different matter).

So what DO you wear when it’s cold out and you want to be comfortable?

If You Love Uggs Because they are Boots:
After that Ugg boot conversation on Movie Night, my friend asked me to help her find a worthy alternative to Uggs.

I mentioned that I find my Bern boots from DUO to be a great choice for me – they fit my wide calves, they are super comfy even after an entire day on my feet, they have a Sherpa lining which keeps me warm in the winter and sweat-free in the summer. I waterproofed them with some product from REI and now they are great in rain and snow. I can throw them on with any socks, under jeans, with sundresses and be cozy, comfy but not look as though I just rolled out of bed. Something like my Berns are a great alternative.

My friend is blessed with lovely legs that can fit into standard width boots, so she had more options than I. My friend is an attorney by day, but loves to hit a concert, bar or party on the weekends. Her style is very J. Crew – classic, feminine, with preppy and whimsical touches. We started her anti-Uggs search by heading to the mall, where she could try on a variety of boot heights and silhouettes to find one that fit her body and her sense of style (and saw far too many paird of Ugg boots on women, children and everything in between). After trying on many classics like the Frye Harness boot, we realized that a taller boot was more flattering to her slim petite frame, a more feminine silhouette (less cowboy, more city dweller) fit her figure as well as her wardrobe, and though she is one to usually rock the black ankle boots, she found a dark brown to be a great neutral for her casual clothes.

After figuring out the color and the silhouette, she then went online to find the best price. She ended up choosing the “Veronica” boot by Frye. They work under jeans, over skinny jeans, with dresses and skirts. The low heel makes the boots wearable for long periods of time. They are a very classic silhouette that will be stylish even a decade from now. They are casual enough to pull on with jeans and a sweater to head to the market, or even wear to work at the law firm. Frye is a brand known for quality, so she knows that her boots are a good investment and not a passing fad that will end up in the garbage or donation bin come next season.

I belive Uggs are popular because they ARE boots – they can be worn with jeans or with skirts. They are extra warm because of the height and stand out in a crowd because of their size. A riding boot, engineer boot or some other style of tall boot with low heel and solid sole is a worthy alternative that will have much more style. Leather can easily be weatherproofed, and leather softens with age and care, making them more comfortable and molded to your body with every wearing.

If You Love Uggs because they are Like Slippers:
I hate to say it, but tough noogies. Shoes aren’t as comfy as slippers, and proper pants aren’t as comfortable as pajamas (and nope, those plaid flannel pants are NOT streetwear, no matter what you pair them with).
That being said, not all shoes pinch the toes and chafe the heels. There are many brands out there that provide style along with comfort. Some great brands are Naturalizer, Sofft, Born, and Dansko.

There are many styles that are easy to slip on as well. I have a pair of ankle boots from David Tate that have an elasticized gusset on the side so I can pull them on in a jiffy and can slip off using one foot to slip off the other foot’s shoe. I used to have a great pair of ballet-inspired flats from Naturalizer that had a really cushy supportive footbed, a squishy rubber sole, were made of butter-soft leather and felt just like a pair of slippers. However, these flats could be worn to work and for play without looking as though I was a lost Eskimo.

If You Love Uggs because they are Cute:
They aren’t cute.

Okay, they can be slightly cute on a little toddler who needs puffy warm shoes to protect her toes in cold weather, but they aren’t cute on adults. Seriously, they aren’t. Sorry.

If You Love Uggs because All Your Friends Love Uggs:
Be a trendsetter in your clique! Show your friends how utterly stylish yet comfy your new Mary Janes/riding boots/ankle booties/ballet flats can be. Lead by example with your elegance and chic feet. And know that style doesn’t come from imitation, but personal realization.

Why I Don’t Write Here…

I still love fashion. I still find it terribly important to care about what you look like. I still feel that every woman can be stylish regardless of size, shape, age, budget or lifestyle. I still feel that more women who are my shape and are my income level should have style blogs.

But I am just busy… and I am uninspired.

When I started this blog, it was just for me – to make sure I didn’t wear the same suit when I saw a business client a second time, that I didn’t wear my pink J. Crew merino sweater two times in the same week. And then it caught on. And then MSNBC and other big sites found me and linked to me and for a while I had thousands of readers every single day.

Around that time was when I realized that I wasn’t all that special here at my blog. When I started in 2005 it was kind of a novel idea. I wasn’t famous, I wasn’t thin, I wasn’t a style icon. But now, well there are millions of us out there.

And I don’t have the time to keep up a cool looking blog template. I don’t have the time to set up my tripod and timer and take pictures of me twirling around on my back deck or throwing leaves over my head in the neighborhood park, or look forlornly at my vintage boots on a city street. I don’t have time to them Photoshop the hell out of said photos to make them look like wee little works of art, showing the detail in the lace of my thrift store frock, or the buttons on my designer coat.

I don’t have the time to contact companies and encourage them to send me swag so I can review it. I don’t have the time to take the swag that I do already receive and properly review it, posting about it and making plenty of little hyperlinks to give that company their much-deserved SEO. And honestly, I am not interested in a bunch of new makeup or hair products – I don’t have the time to play with products I can’t use easily and quickly on a daily basis. It’s clutter that fills my dressing table and bathroom and eventually a landfill.

There are two types of personal style blogs – the good ones and the crappy ones. And really, even if the person has great and real style and a gorgeous real body, if they have dark crappy photos and a cluttered dated template, I don’t like to go visit. And it sucks, because those who usually have the time to make their blogs all so purty… well they aren’t usually the type who have real bodies, real budgets, real lives. And a lot of personal style bloggers have become far too self-important. None of us are perfect. And really, any outfit can look utterly charming or chic with the right poses and lighting and crap.

So I will keep writing at this blog, but I won’t have my daily looks very often because I need my time for sleep, for work, for snuggling with my baby. For cleaning my house, cuddling with my husband, spending time in the real world with real people doing real things.

And if you want some inspiration from real women who do style blogs well (and actual style), I encourage you to visit, subscribe and comment at:

Tuesday Cheating

We are not supposed to wear denim to work except on Fridays. Lately I have been cheating because, A. I only own like two pairs of trousers that currently fit and one is Dry Clean Only, and B. I work on the 9th floor (execs and 90% of the company is on the 7th floor) and sit behind two computers all day so like a newscaster, no one sees me from the waist down.

Today is a cheating sort of day. I wore my black pants yesterday (blackj New York & Company trousers with blood orange scoop necked fine gauge scoopneck sweater from Lands End and olive and silver bead necklace also from NY&Co) and I am not in a dress mood (or living in dress weather right now - Brrrr!).

I didn't take a picture because I haven't figured out yet how to take a picture in my house while it is still dark out without waking a baby or a husband. When I figure it out, I will resume with regular full-length photos. But here I am just five minutes ago at my desk:

And yes, I did whip out my cosmetic bag to reapply my lipstick before shooting the picture!  The evidence is sitting right on my desk!

Anyway, today I am wearing a navy waffle-knit shawl-collar sweater from Ann Taylor LOFT that I got on clearance AND with a store credit (more on that in a bit), my Seven jeans (no clue the style, they were on sale, they are stretchy, they have a fake scratch/tear in them at the right knee that is big enough for me to fiddle with during a boring meeting but small enough that I don't look like Lita Ford), my Bern boots from DUO (under the jeans - jeans not tight enough and boots not dark enough for the tuck-in look).  Around my neck is a silver chain with my wedding band (nope, haven't gotten it resized yet), wearing silver hoops and my silver cuff.

Makeup is a blend of Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer and Estee Lauder Nutritious foundation (the combo gives me a sheer look but isn't too pale or too dark - really trying to use what I have on hand), Laura Mercier Secret Camoflauge, Nars blush in Orgasm and a touch of Laura Mercier Bronzer over it.  On eyes is my beloved Revlon Colorstay shadow quad in Neutral Khakis - khaki on the lid, brown in the crease and along lash lines.  I splurged this holiday season and went back to DiorShow for my mascara.  I had bought L'Oreal Voluminous but it dries out quickly, clumps the first week or two, dries out my lashes and just doesn't offer the same OOMPH of DiorShow.  Anyhoo, that with a Shu Eumura lash curler  is my fave combo by far.  On lips is Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey.

As for the hair... well yesterday I decided to straighten it with my Croc wet-to-dry flat iron.  I thought it looked flat but got lots of compliments, even from my shy male new colleague.  Hrm...  well today it is "second day hair" so I just took big sections and twirled them around my Vidal Sasson curling iron for fine hair and then held it with a couple blasts of Elnett.  It looked fabulous, but then I decided to try on my new hat from LOFT and really jacked it up (while realizing I only should wear hats when it is super duper cold out - I am not a floppy beanie sort of gal).

So anyway... my frugal tip for the day:
TAKE IT BACK!

I worked a decade in retail, and I hated hated HATED returns.  Man, you would get people who would pull the DREGS out of their closet, bring it to the store and we had to accept it (one reason why return policies in stores have gotten far more tough - that and shoplifting and returning...).

However, I do returns.  If I buy something and it breaks or doesn't turn out well after following the laundry directions to the letter, I return it.  If I get buyer's remorse, I return it.  And if I decide to clean out my closet during my holiday staycation and I find a pair of chinos and two sweaters I ordered from LOFT this past Spring with the tags still on and also find the shipping receipt... I return it.  And I did return it and ended up with enough store credit to get myself a lovely berry-colored cable knit scarf, a matching beanie, and the sweater I am wearing today.

I also went through my closet and found a bunch of stuff I could return to Nordstrom - shoes I haven't worn, dresses with tags still on them, makeup still in the packaging.  Things I bought over the year in an attempt to feel better with retail therapy.  Luckily with Nordstrom, there isn't a time limit so these returns go straight back into my bank account.  I received two items as gifts that I did NOT like and didn't open so I returned to Sephora for a lovely store credit.  I also found a top I got at Old Navy that I didn't like - it had been less than 45 days and I took it back to the store for a refund back on my card.

"But it was only ten bucks!"
"I feel like a jerk"
"It's my fault for buying it in the first place"
"What a PITA to go back to the store"
"Ugh, I don't want to pay $5.95 to send it back"

The thing is, ten bucks is ten bucks.  If you saw a kickass cashmere sweater and it was $10 off, wouldn't you be happy?  Then return that silly top you picked up at Old Navy/Forever 21/H&M/Wal-mart that doesn't fit right, looks a bit cheap but was only $10.  And use that $10 toward something really of value.

Yes, salespeople at stores HATE returns because it affects their bonuses, their sales, their standing with the company, yadda yadda.  But a good salesperson doesn't roll her eyes at you and get nasty when you come to the counter - a good salesperson will be sweet as pie and figure out a way to make that return an exchange (or at least convince you to return and shop another time).  And yes, it may cost to return and online purchase, but it's better to lose $5.95 for shipping than lose $12.95 on a stupid top you will maybe wear once.

FYI: USPS will do free pickups right to your front door.  You can register carrier pickups online.  This makes many returns much easier to swallow - no need to stand in line at the post office or drag that box to your place of employment!

My Personal Best Buys from the Past Five Years

We often purchase a new sweater, shoes or dress that seems fantastic but a year or two later is either in the donation bag or the dusty back of the closet. Even though I try to be careful and thoughtful with my purchases, this happens to me as well.

Last week I was on the DC Metro heading to work and I looked down at my outfit to realize most of the pieces I was wearing were things I had not purchased recently. I decided then to make a list of the top ten best purchases I have made over the past five years. These are not necessarily the best purchases for others, but have been great buys for me – a 30-something petite, curvy professional who lives in the Mid-Atlantic portion of the United States. I encourage you to share your best buys as well, and the reasons WHY they are best buys. You never know, your best buy may be exactly what another reader is needing for her wardrobe!

1. Lands End Commuter Coat – Two years ago I changed jobs from one where I drove to a building in the DC suburbs, to one where I took the Metro and walked a few blocks in the city to my workplace. This change affected my wardrobe, especially my outerwear collection. No longer could I get away with a pashmina and umbrella for the majority of the year – I needed garments to properly protect me from the elements.

My first purchase was a proper winter coat – after many online reviews and great previous experience with Lands End, I purchased their Commuter Coat. I needed a coat that would keep me warm without bulk, work with pants or a dress, keep my bum warm on a cold bench and also work if snow turned to sleet.

This coat did it all and more. The Commuter Coat is a simple silhouette that doesn’t look dated even though it is being worn for its third season. It’s super warm, but thin enough to be stuffed into a tote bag when the Metro car is 95 degrees. The coat is reversible (though I find the non-quilted side to look a bit dowdy) which means there are always secure interior pockets. Speaking of pockets, they zip close and are deep so I never fear losing my SmartTrip card or cell phone. Being a petite curvy woman, a quilted coat can easily make me look as though I am wearing a sleeping bag; this coat is far more flattering than any other quilted coat I have ever dared to try on. The high neck protects me against cold winds, and the style is tailored enough that I can wear it with a business suit and not look like a confused Sherpa, and it always looks great with a colorful scarf, jeans and boots.

I am a woman who finds a wool coat to be more stylish and versatile than a quilted nylon coat, but sometimes a woman needs more function that wool can offer. This coat gets the job done without sacrificing all style.

(Style I own currently not available on Lands End site but it has been available on their site for at least the last three winters - so check back this fall!)

2. My Bern boots from DUO Boots – Part of me didn’t want to put these on the list because I have recently been frustrated with DUO, but I love these boots so much.

DUO makes amazing, high quality boots and shoes for all widths of calf and foot. If you live in or visit the UK, I recommend you check them out in person. However if you live outside the UK, the shipping is so much and the return policy so difficult, it may not be worth it to try this company. I currently have a pair of boots from them that I need to put on eBay because the boots were backordered so long that by time they arrived, I was on pregnancy bedrest (and they were shipped to my office, not my house). By time I was able to get ahold of them, it was past the return period and I found they didn’t fit over my ankles. I have asked them twice for advice on what boots could fit my large ankles like the Bern and both times I have gotten emails that either misunderstand what I am asking (they tell me wide foot styles) or else offer suggestions that do not fit in any manner like the Bern (hence me having a pair of boots in my office that need to be put on eBay).

That being said, my Bern boots from DUO are awesome. They fit my large “I was a child toewalker” ankles as well as calves and have a style similar to the Frye Harness boots. They are a pretty classic style that can be worn with jeans or with dresses. They are fleece-lined so they keep me cozy in winter and don’t make me sweat in the summer. But best of all – these are boots I can wear all day. Seriously, all day. They are just as comfortable as a pair of slippers – maybe more so because there is arch support. When I have a day where my heels kill me, I will come home and instead of going barefoot I will put on my DUO boots. When I went to the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee, I took my DUO boots. I used some waterproofing solution on them and wore them with my sundresses in the 100-degree weather, on the hot dusty days, and the rainy mucky days. These boots survived this four-day event (as did my feet) and they still look work-appropriate.

If I won the lottery, I would order another pair of Bern boots from DUO in black. I wish they had the same exact style with a slightly higher heel – if they did I would want them in every color.

3. Black Matte Jersey Wrap Dress from Old Navy – I am a huge fan of matte jersey, and of wrap dresses. I have owned at least a dozen in the past decade, but this one from Old Navy has by far been my best purchase. Unfortunately I can’t link to this item because even when I bought it two years ago, it was on the clearance rack in the store for $19.99 and I had never seen it online.

Why this wrap dress and not the one I have from Maggy London, Ann Taylor or Talbots? Because it has everything I could possible need for fit, style and versatility. It has a ¾ sleeve which means I can wear it in winter or spring without looking out of season. There are no details or adornments that make it memorable, and means I can dress it up with pearls and peeptoes for a day wedding or a beaded necklace and boots for work. The length hits right at the top part of my knee so it hides my knee bulge but doesn’t look matronly. It is a faux wrap so it won’t fly open with a strong breeze, yet the wrap belt lets me cinch the waist to create a nice silhouette. I can throw it in the washer on the gentle cycle, hang it up and have it ready to wear the next day. Finally, it fit me when I was a 10, fit me when I was in my second trimester of pregnancy, fit me postpartum when I was a lumpy size 16/18, and fits me now.

I always say to purchase quality and not quantity, and that quality can be found anywhere and at any pricepoint. Well this Old Navy dress proves it!

4. Pashminas from Nordstrom – I own five solid-colored pashminas and a few printed shawls that are the same size. They have been purchased at little boutiques, discount Big Box retailers, eBay shops, and have been given to me by online retailers so I can talk about them on my blog. I love them all and wear them all the time, but my pashminas from Nordstrom are the ones that get the most play and the most love.

Why? Because they are perfect. They aren’t too thick, and aren’t too thin. The fringe never unravels or gets tangled. The colors are rich and true and stay rich and true with multiple washings. They are so soft and cozy, you wish you had sheets and pajamas from the material. They are the perfect size to be a shawl with a dress, a scarf with a winter coat, a napping blanket on an airplane, even to be knotted at the breast and worn as a makeshift nightgown on business trips. They can be balled up and thrown in your carryon bag or purse and they come out looking fresh and fabulous.

Nope, they aren’t cheap (usually $99 unless you find one during their Half-yearly Sales), but they are completely and fully worth the money. I bought an aqua one almost 10 years ago and it still looks perfect except for a hole in it from having it get caught in my office chair. I bought an avocado-green one during a sale a couple of years ago and it’s a gorgeous color and still my favorite scarf in my collection.

5. Camel Banana Republic Sandhurst XL Shoulder Bag/Hobo – I bought this… three years ago I believe. This was my first Banana Republic leather bag, and my first “expensive” purse. Before this bag, I always got purses from places like Express or TJ Maxx or Target. Once I got a bag from the clearance bin at Nordstrom for $70 and thought I was going crazy with the dinero.

Well one time in Banana Republic I saw this bag and fell in love. The leather was soft, yet looked like a football. It had the perfect pockets – one for my Blackberry, one for my cell, one for my SmartTrip card, and one to hold things like pens and lipglosses and things that get lost in a main compartment. It also had a keyhook that was easy to reach and use even while the bag was over my shoulder. The strap was the perfect length – it fit nicely under my arm, even while wearing a winter coat. It was around $300 – too rich for my blood. But I returned again and again to Banana Republic to look at it, touch it, try it on. I checked out the green, the black, the dark brown but kept going back to the light brown/camel color. I never wear camel, but I wanted this bag.

So I stalked it on eBay. And I got it for $200 in new condition, even with the storage bag. It arrived and I could smell the leather through the USPS flat-rate box. It was a classic style, yet looked expensive. I loved that it wasn’t exactly brown and wasn’t black so it worked with pretty much any shoe in my wardrobe. The hardware was blackened brass so it didn’t clash with silver or gold jewelry. When I tossed it on a couch or over a chair back, I always got compliments. It didn’t have obvious logos and I was often asked if it was some designer bag or if I got it in another country on some fabulous trip.

The next year, I saw another Banana Republic bag I loved. Again I stalked it on eBay and I got it for even better of a steal. It arrived pristine in the storage bag… and there wasn’t the same love. It wasn’t as perfect. The leather wasn’t as supple and the color wore away on the strap. The pockets weren’t as perfectly sized and my cell would fall out and get lost in the abyss of the main compartment. The strap was just a hair shorter – enough that I looked awkward wearing it on my shoulder with my winter coat. The love was lost when I had it on my lap one time on the Metro and used it to prop up the newspaper – when I got to my station I folded the paper and saw that the ink transferred all over this bag. I went online to find ways to clean the leather. I tried a very gentle soap on a spot and the entire color and finish as well as the newsprint wore away. I took it to a leather specialist who said the dye and finish wasn’t study enough to handle a proper cleaning and he could possibly end up ruining it. I put this bag back in its storage bag and placed it in my closet. I returned to the Sandhurst and returned to weekly compliments and people asking where they too could get such a cute bag.

I kept using the Sandhurst until this past fall, when a bottle of expressed breast milk busted open and leaked all through the bag, the lining, through the leather and onto my lap. For those who have nursed and pumped, you know that breast milk goes sour very quickly. By time I had gotten home, the entire bag reeked of sour milk and no professional cleaning could completely get out the crunchy stain on the leather or the horrible smell. However I can’t let go – the bag is in my closet in its storage bag, right next to my other Banana Republic purse.

I currently have another purse that has all the right pockets and is a versatile color and nice leather… but it’s no Sandhurst.

6. Ray Ban Aviator Sunglasses – As with purses, I have always been a discount sunglasses woman. Black plastic frames have been en vogue for so many years – who cares if they are Dior or from the drugstore? Anyway, I am one to step on sunglasses, lose sunglasses or forget them in a boiling hot car – it never made sense for me to drop bucks on a pair of shades.

Two years ago, I won a contest through a magazine where I got a weekend trip to Miami and a $500 gift card to Bal Harbour Shops. I decided that with this money, I should purchase something I would never ever otherwise buy. My goal was to get an It Bag, but I never saw one that weekend that I actually liked. So on the last day, I went into Celine and bought a $250 pair of sunglasses. They were very cool – I thought I looked like a rock star. I used the rest of my gift card on a bottle of perfume, a couple sale items from Banana Republic and the rest went toward a necklace my sister wanted from Tiffany. Of course as we were leaving the mall I saw a Marc Jacobs bag that I loved that was on sale but it was too late.

The sunglasses fell apart at lunch later that day. I was so upset. I went back to Celine and after FOREVER, fighting with the salesperson to get a replacement, etc. I left with a new pair. That pair fell apart a couple weeks later. When I contacted Celine stating that I was in a different state, my $250 sunglasses fell apart I received a response that pretty much said, “sucks to be you!”

I decided to go back to my discount sunglasses. Aviators were back in style and I was so glad as that IU have a big face that needs a larger style, and metal frames are less likely to get warped when being left on my dashboard in August. I bought a pair from Target – they were cute but didn’t shield me enough from the sun. I got a pair from Ann Taylor Loft and they always sat funny on my ears. I found a pair at Marshall’s and always felt that they looked as cheap as they cost.

I was 39 weeks pregnant and felt like crap. I was on bedrest and could only stand for 30 minutes at a time. I felt like a beached whale. My hair was in need of a cut and color, I hadn’t seen my toes in weeks, my maternity clothes had been worn and reworn so often I wanted to burn them. My sister drove me to my midwife appointment and on the way home we passed a mall. My sister had a pair of shoes to return to Nordstrom and asked if she could do so. I said I wanted to come in – I would use my 30 minutes of standing that day for some much-needed retail therapy. In those 30 minutes I bought two pairs of silver earrings and a pair of silver aviators from Ray Ban. When 39 weeks pregnant, the only things I knew would fit me then and six months later were accessories. I then got myself a delicious fattening decaf coffee drink and met my sister to head back to the car.

It was a cloudy, dreary day. I didn’t care, I put on my new sunglasses and felt cute for the first time in months. I felt cute and sassy. A year later, these sunglasses still make me feel cute and sassy. Unlike the pricey Celine shades, these sunglasses are super durable. They are a classic style that I think I can wear for years, but still look current and on trend. They are silver, which is my favorite color of metal. They look cute with a bathing suit, a sundress, weekend duds or a nicer outfit. They fit my face perfectly – more perfectly than any other sunglasses I have ever purchased. And though they weren’t cheap, they are a value as that I have no need to purchase any other sunglasses as long as I have these. Again, proof of quality versus quantity and proof that money doesn’t equal quality.

7. Chantelle “Senso” Bra  – As I write this, I am wearing this bra. I think this is the fourth one I have purchased in the past five years.

I have large breasts, and it has always been hard for me to find a bra that is invisible under sheer knits, lifts and separates, doesn’t make my shoulders ache at the end of the day, doesn’t show with a scoop or low neck, and hides “high beams.” Well this bra does all of this for me.

The Senso is tight when you first get it – the band isn’t very stretchy. I have pulled a muscle trying to latch a new Senso bra. However this is one reason why it gives such amazing shape and doesn’t dig into my shoulders. This bra molds to your shape – after a week or so it’s easy to get on, yet it is still as supportive. For my fair complexion, I find the Nude color of the Senso to be almost the same exact color as my skin – not a weird yellow-tan color like many other “nude” bras. The cups are slightly molded and padded – not so much that it makes my bust look bigger, but enough to give me a nice shape and smooth professional look.

Now that I have been nursing my daughter for almost a year, my breasts are not the same shape, size or firmness that they used to be. The Senso hides this fact, by still giving me a perky bustline.

After six months, even with gentle care I find the Senso starts to fall apart – the wires pop out, the elastic starts stretching out. I still find these bras worth it and just purchase a replacement bra. I fear this bra being discontinued because I love it so much and it loves me in return.

8. Shoes by Sofft – I have never been one to sacrifice style for comfort. Four-inch pointy toed pumps? Bring it on! However when carrying a baby in the third trimester, I found high heels not only painful but dangerous. I didn’t want to waddle around town in Crocs and tennies, so I needed some alternative that would be kind to my feet while still having at least a bit of style.

Enter Sofft shoes. I started off with their “Veronica” Mary Jane in brown suede. It had a vintage-inspired silhouette and a cute little leather flower at the strap. I bought them a whole size larger than I wore pre-pregnancy and went from a medium to wide width and was in footwear heaven. These shoes were wearable all day, even when I was at the end of my last trimester and was swollen with high blood pressure. I constantly got compliments on how cute and sassy they were – quite a feat when puffy and pregnant.

Postpartum I realized I didn’t fit into my old shoes and I no longer had the muscles or endurance for stilettos. However I just couldn’t resort to dowdy flats and clunky loafers. Sofft came to the rescue again with “Carlina,” a dark red patent leather T-strap sandal that again had a cute vintage-inspired look. These shoes were so comfortable yet so incredibly cute. The red patent leather was an unexpected neutral that worked with most of my spring and summer wardrobe. I loved them so much I bought them in black and wore those with pants as well as dresses and skirts. I have even rocked the red pair this winter with opaque black tights. I then bought the Sofft “Vanna” – a T-strap similar to the “Carlina,” but with a slightly higher stacked heel and in brown croco-embossed leather. These looked fantastic with dresses, with my ivory work trousers and with jeans. My summer shoe wardrobe was complete.

My foot muscles are coming back and I have slowly been infusing higher and skinnier heels back into the wardrobe. However I still have a, ahem… “Sofft” spot in my heart for Sofft shoes and am always looking to see what styles they have (and what styles are on sale).

9. Burberry London Eau de Parfum – I love fragrance. I must have two dozen bottles of perfumes and sprays on my dressing table. However I have spent the past two decades looking for The One. A fragrance that is me – not too girly, not too musky, not too fresh. A fragrance that I don’t even notice, and a fragrance that I don’t smell on every single other woman in the elevator. Many perfumes would give me headaches or cause me to sneeze so I needed one that didn’t irritate. Unlike some women who love a different fragrance for every season and reason, I wanted a signature scent that I could spritz every morning and make part of my routine.

My husband and I both played hooky from work a few years ago and went Christmas shopping at a nearby mall. We stopped in Sephora so I could get him a new cologne. He suggested I try a couple fragrances (at this point in my life I had given up on wearing perfume). I talked to the salesperson and we discussed my sense of style, my personality, what fragrances in the past I have loved (Chanel No.5 but my mom wears it) and what I hated (Calvin Klein’s Escape makes me have a migraine). We tried a couple scents that were… okay and then she spritzed Burberry London on the inside of my elbow. I inhaled… and I felt comfortable, elegant, myself. My husband smelled it and smiled. “This smells like you when you are having a good hair day.” I knew what he was trying to say, and it was exactly the type of scent I wanted for myself. He bought me a bottle and I have been wearing it almost every day ever since.

Unlike Chanel Chance or Narscico Rodriguez for Her or Chanel No. 19 or Dune or Opium or any other fragrance I have tried and eventually hated on myself, I haven’t lost the love for Burberry London. And now that I have a child, I love that I have a signature fragrance that she can smell and think of me (as I do with my mom and Chanel No. 5). I love that I do a spritz on my wrists and one on one throat and then go to kiss my husband and daughter goodbye and my husband sniffs and says, “you smell pretty.” I love that I finally have a fragrance where a friend can borrow my scarf and breathe in and say, “this smells like you” and has a face letting me know that it’s a good thing.

An Alison fragrance… what I have always wanted!

10. Dresses by Muse and Maggy London – When you are petite, over a size 12 and busty, it’s hard to find cute dresses. Most dresses that fit in the bust are too large in the shoulders. If they are petite in shape, they are too tight in the body. If they fit in the body, they are too long in the arms and hem. And everything seems to make me look like a porn star and require a camisole and some strategically-placed safety pins. Styles and brands I covet do not come large enough fit me.

Thank God for Maggy London and my new love – Muse. These brands made great variations of designer styles, with a broader range of sizes (and a more wallet-friendly price point). After finding these brands, I have become a Dress Person. Nine times out of ten, if I purchase a 14 petite in Maggy London or a 16 Petite or Large in Muse, I will have what seems to be a custom fit. Yes the safety pin is still needed to make many of these dresses work-appropriate, but these dresses fit, flatter, are on trend, wear well, wash well and aren’t overly trendy. Dresses I purchased five years ago still look new and stylish, and I love having a wardrobe of cute dresses I can easily toss on when I don’t have the time or the creativity to build a look.

So tell me readers, what have been the best buys that you have made over the past few years?
