Rothy’s Flats Review

Fashion Advice

Rothy's Flats: an honest unpaid review of rothy's shoes by Wardrobe OxygenYou’ve likely seen Rothy’s flats. They advertise on Facebook, they’re promoted on Twitter, and if you google you’ll find tons of reviews for Rothy’s flats. But are those reviews legit? I decided to purchase a pair of Rothy’s shoes with my own money, give them a beating, and report back to you a complete honest review of Rothy’s flats.

For those who haven’t heard of Rothy’s they’re flats made from low-waste, low-impact materials and hand made into a stylish and comfortable shoe. Created from recycled water bottles 3D-knit into a stretchy yet dense fabric, Rothy’s are machine washable (and line dry), the insoles are removable (and washable), all the packaging is recyclable and Rothy’s even has a program to recycle their shoes when you no longer want them. With their flats, Rothy’s has repurposed almost 6 million water bottles. Sounds pretty awesome, but how do they fit and how do the hold up?

I have wide feet and short toes, and hardly any curve in my Achilles’. Put all of this together and flats are terrible on me. They’re usually too narrow or too wide, and if a pair does fit it will tear up the backs of my ankles and if I wear them too long in a day they stretch out and my pinky toes escape. I didn’t have high hopes for Rothy’s but was willing to take one for the team.

rothy's flat review and tips on how to style them for weekend

Styling Rothy's Flats for the weekend with ankle-length jeans and a blazer. Consider pattern mixing – the Red Camo is neutral enough to pair beautifully with other prints like leopard and Breton stripes.  A red lip ties the look together.

Rothy’s flats come in two styles – round toe and pointed. I am of the mindset that pointed-toe flats look better – more structured, elongate the figure, look cute peeking out of trousers as well as styled with shorter pants. The Point has 20 different colors to choose from. I thought I’d do basic black, but it was out of stock and I was glad because some of their prints and colors are unexpected neutrals that may be more versatile. Liking the camo pattern, I decided to get a pair in Red Camo (red IS the color of the season!). I wear an 8 in everything except sandals, when I go with 7.5 super duper wide. I ordered the Rothy’s flats in 8.

The shoes arrived in just a couple days. They came in a sturdy cardboard box that had a self-adhesive strip to make returns easy. The box was the type you can unfold into one piece which makes it easy to recycle or reuse. The packaging inside was simple – one sheet of paper wrapped around the shoes, a small card about the brand, and some stuffing inside the shoes all made from paper and recycleable.

The next day I worked from home but I put on the shoes anyway, Super comfortable. They didn’t slip, they didn’t rub, they didn’t dig, they didn’t feel like it feels when you wear fishnets and you take off your shoes and have a pattern embedded into your skin. But the most walking I did was around the house and to the mailbox, so it wasn’t a good test of these flats.

Last week I had the perfect opportunity to test Rothy’s flats. I woke at 1:30 am and threw on my Rothy’s and caught a train from DC to NYC. I arrived at 7:30 to grey skies that soon opened up sending sheets of rain on the city. It was the kind of day that will destroy a pair of shoes. My friend and I walked all over Soho, we headed to Brooklyn, we walked miles. We got sopping wet, we ate lunch, we shopped, we got a glass of wine, we walked some more. I stepped in puddles that were grey and had things floating in them. I raced to make lights, I stood for long periods of time, I wore my Rothy’s for over 10 hours straight, giving them a straight-up NYC beating.

In NYC wearing my Rothy's flats

When I finally took my shoes off around 5pm they were wet and soggy and stunk. I took out the removable insoles to help them dry faster. An hour later we were to go back out and I had no desire to wear heels so I put back on the Rothy’s which had dried 99% and wore them for a couple more hours walking around Brooklyn.

Rothy's Flats Review and styling tips on how to wear for weekend, work, and with a dress

Styling Rothy's flats with a dress: The best silhouettes of skirt or dress with flats is a shift style like above, or a below the knee flowy style in a knit like ponte or a heavier jersey.  A t-shirt dress and denim jacket gets a pop of color with a cheerful shoulder bag; add a bandana at the throat to complete the look.

No hot spots. No blisters. No sore feet from pounding the pavement (a little bit in the arches due to lack of arch support but no wore than most shoes). The shoes shifted a bit with wear and there’d was some pinky toe cleavage happening, but never did I fear my toes would slip out. Since the shoes are essentially made out of elastic, the shoes moved with me and didn’t stretch out when they got wet. After taking them off, they shrunk back to the original shape. If you have stinky feet, these aren’t going to stop that. My feet stunk after the day, and the shoes smelled pretty bad, even the next day. However, I think with such a day and no socks any shoe would have been stinky.

When I got home I took out the insoles and put the insoles and the shoes into the washing machine along with old towels and knock around jeans and knits. Normal amount of detergent, cold water. The shoes came out and looked like new. The red color was still vibrant, the knit still tight, the shape back to the original fit. I hung the shoes from clip hangers to air dry and they were completely dry the next day. What impressed me is that all the funk was gone – no smell. Even when I wore them again and heated them up… no smell.

Rothy's flats review with styling tips on how to wear for work, weekend, date night, and with a dress

Styling Rothy's flats for a night out: with the pointed toe and fun patterns, Rothy's flats can work for a night out with the girls or dinner with your date.  A pair of dark slim jeans with some stretch and a silky blouse with ruffle detail will look chic with leopard-inspired pointed front flats.  Add gold jewelry and a clutch to glam up the ensemble.

Because Rothy’s are made from a knit, these are not dressy shoes. Depending on the color and shape, you may be able to carry these off in a business casual workplace. I've worn mine with ankle pants and a sweater or dark skinny jeans and a blazer to work. I've shared a few ways to style Rothy's flats for the weekend, work, an evening with friends, and with a skirt.  These are great shoes for the weekend, an upscale alternative to sneakers or flip flops. I know these will be my go-to for travel since they’re so easy to slip on and off, super flexible, great for a flight but also for light sight seeing. These shoes are lightweight and flexible, the kind you can toss in the bottom of your tote to change into after a day in heels.

I paid for my Rothy’s. I've never communicated with the brand and they have no idea I wrote this post. Thanks for the review! I’d love to use your referral link but don’t see one that works. Do you still have a link? I’ve found other referral links out there but would love to give the referral to you. 🙂

My Rothy’s SHRUNK when I washed them! I followed the care instructions and now my size 9.5 shoes fit like an 8 at best. I’m furious, their customer service has been non existant, and there’s no option to leave a review on their website. Sneaky! Now I’m $145 in the hole for a pair of unwearable shoes. BEWARE!

    • Alison Gary February 17, 2018

Oh no that’s awful! Mine haven’t shrunk, I’m sad they haven’t responded. The only way I got a response was by contacting them through their Twitter DM, if you have Twitter try that. Good luck!

  • Denise February 17, 2018

I have been dying to try these. I have the same problems with flats. Now I have a good excuse to buy and s good review.

  • Erica February 14, 2018

Sizing question – from the reviews I’ve read, most people seem to be sizing up with their Rothys. I just got mine and they feel a little big. I’m a solid size 11, and wear 11.5-12 in running shoes (I never size down). I have wide toes and a narrow heal, so flats often slip off and/or squish my pinky toe. I’m debating whether to exchange for a 10.5 or just wear them a bit to see if they snug up. Anybody have any experience with this?

On the friend codes, got a message today that they changed the system. Old codes won’t work. Here’s what they sent me: https://www.talkable.com/x/hnmEeg

    • Erica February 16, 2018

Update: after wearing the shoes for an evening I decided to stick with my original size 11 pair and not size down. They ship with tissue and a plastic rod in them, which I think stretched them out. After awhile they seemed to regain their shape and fit better.

I wore them all day yesterday, including biking to work in them. No heel slip and no odor issues. So far, so good.

  • Ivette February 6, 2018

Ok so I have medium sweaty feet, and they only smell with flats, HOWEVER, a good pair of flats will only get smelly after maybe a month of continuous wear, did these start smelling on the first day?? Love your honesty in the review by the way. I have been trying to find flats that don’t smell, Ross has a pair that I will buy no matter the color or style because they don’t smell!

  • Alison Gary February 2, 2018

  • Sandy January 30, 2018

Hi – My daughter is living in Taiwan for the next year. She walks a lot and I’m looking for a comfortable shoe for her that will also wear well in all of the rain they have. This sounds perfect. But, I want to make sure I’m ordering the right size for her since it wouldn’t be easy or even really possible for her to return them. She has a fairly narrow foot and normally wears a sz. 40 or a 9, but sometimes a 9.5. I’m looking at the round toe option. Would love your input / recommendation. Thanks!

    • Sandy January 30, 2018

I would also consider the pointy style, but thought the round might be more comfortable? Thoughts?

    • Alison Gary January 31, 2018

I’d likely go with the smaller size but I have wide feet and haven’t tried these on narrow feet so don’t consider what I write to be gospel.

  • Mikayla January 25, 2018

Hi! Thanks for this review! I’m trying to find an alternative to my current shoe-buying model (buy two pairs of $20-$30 flats once a year and then get frustrated when they get scuffed or stained and I can’t wash and wear them to work anymore because they look like garbage). I’m an elementary school teacher, so I spend A LOT of time on my feet and there are just a lot of ways that shoes can get stained. I’m wondering if you have continued to wear them a considerable amount and whether they’ve continued to wear and wash well. The price tag is too much for me if I’m just going to have the same experience I’ve been having with other shoes, but if they hold up well, it might be worth it.

    • Alison Gary January 29, 2018

I have washed mine three times and they still look like new. The only issue I’ve found is washing seems to get the smell out until they heat up. I’ve read using vinegar and putting out in the sun but haven’t tried either yet. But dirt, mud, even paint have washed off these very easily!

  • Michelle January 14, 2018

The thanks code doesn’t work for me?

  • FRANCESCA January 11, 2018

HELLO, IVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT TRYING THESE SHOES FOREVER AND YOUR REVIEW HAS ME CONVINCED! I AM TRYING TO USE YOUR PROMO CODE FOR $20 OFF BUT ITS NOT WORKING FOR ME…..DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER FRIEND CODE?

  • Deb January 10, 2018

I spent $275 on Tieks and liked how cushy they were, but they did not hold up well. Since they don’t do half sizes and I normally wear a 6..5 or 7, I ordered the 7. So the heel kind of “broke down” and look terrible. When I told Tieks about it, the answer was, next time buy a 6.5. Really? No. Next time I will try the Rothy’s. Thanks for the review.

    • Alison Gary January 11, 2018

So sorry to hear that about Tieks. I haven’t tried them, but do know Rothy’s is a completely different shape and design. Hope they work out for you!

  • Melanie January 10, 2018

Allie, Thanks so much for this review! I’ve been on the fence for ~ a month and have been looking for solid reviews. Your sharing of your ‘friend’ code tipped the scales and I’m ordering two pairs today. Wish they would make the pointed loafer in black and add it to their permanent rotation! Thanks so much!

    • Alison Gary January 11, 2018

You and me both, I’d totally love a pair of black pointed!

  • Anna January 1, 2018

Here’s a tip for those looking for a way to keep the sweat at bay…grab a pair of low cut, no-show athletic socks. Pull out the insole, and wrap it with the sock, elastic side down. You can cut back on the frequency of washing and not have to worry about no-show socks with your Rothy’s! No need for Geks–just unwrap the insole at the end of the day and repeat the process with a clean pair the next day.

  • Rakel November 12, 2017

I just got the rounded toe flats in yesterday and I love them! I wore them all day today shopping and they were very comfortable. I actually first tried them on 2 months ago when I was visiting my sister. I have wide feet, and normally wear a size 10 (I can sometimes do a 9.5 if it’s wide enough). I ordered 10.5 and they fit great. My big toe is rubbing some on the sides, but even after wearing them one day they seem to be stretching to my feet.

I want to try the pointed toes because they look so cute, but I’m super worried that they will crowd my toes being that I have wide feet. I’m not sure if I should try a 10.5 or an 11. I sometimes have to size up to 11 in regular width shoes but they tend to be to long and my feet slide around, which tends to hurt after awhile. So sizing up makes me a little nervous.

I’m debating just ordering a 10.5 and an 11 and then returning whichever doesn’t fit, but that’d be almost $300 at once.

    Thoughts??

    • dtd November 19, 2017

I also have a wide foot with bunions and wondered if I would need a larger size for the pointef toe? Because of my bunions, I have moved up from a 6.5 to a 7 anyhow. Thought?

      • Alison Gary January 11, 2018

I’m not sure, I find them super stretchy and no hot spots but I don’t have bunions. But I have extremely wide feet and didn’t size up for these because of the stretch.

    • Alison Gary January 11, 2018

I have super wide feet (like Sam Edelman’s wides aren’t wide enough for me) and I went with jay regular size in the pointed and no issue. The shoes stretch a lot, so part of your foot may be wide than the sole, but your toes won’t be pinched.

Hello! I just got my Rothy’s this weekend and am excited to give them a go. Question… do you feel the insoles were rough on the bottoms of your feet at all? I am worried about getting hot spots.

  • Sabrina Stair October 22, 2017

I’ve been so curious about these shoes. Any plans to do a review of Tieks?

    • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 22, 2017

I haven’t considered Tieks because the shape isn’t my personal style. I prefer a pointed toe, it goes better with my wardrobe.

    • Gwen Maupin December 30, 2017

I have 4 pairs of tieks and LOVE them! They are very comfortable and I can wear them for HOURS!

      • Jessica February 1, 2018

I bought a pair of Tieks after all the great reviews, but I was not impressed at all. I’m afraid these will be the same.

        • Kari Ziemba February 10, 2018

I bought tieks and absolutely hated them. They were so uncomfortable to me. But I love my Rothys!! Just bought my first pair and it won’t be my last

  • Ali October 19, 2017

Love the honest review and the style options you propose. Would love a pair, but seems they don’t ship to Europe 🙁

  • Abby October 18, 2017

These look great on you, but I have to say they are the smelliest shoes I have ever encountered–something I’ve never had a problem with! The washable shoe is totally fine, but the INSOLES are a nightmare. I can’t seem to remove the stench. I am so sad because the shoes fit so well and were quite pricey.

    • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 22, 2017

Oh that’s awful! Mine seemed to get out the funk, but I’ve read a mix of reviews, some that can get out the funk and some that can’t. So sorry!

  • Allison October 18, 2017

I’ve been eyeing these, and your unpaid opinion convinced me to give them a try. I got the red pointy and am excited to receive them and see if they work for my wonky feet. Used your code, so thank you for the $20 discount! I appreciate it!

    • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 18, 2017

My pleasure, hope you love them!

      • SF January 23, 2018

So helpful to see authentic reviews on comfortable (and presentable) shoes for wide feet. Thank you!

  • DWJ October 18, 2017

So I bought a pair of Rothy’s last year for our big convention since I walk MILES every day. Love them and love that I can wash them because I get stinky feet. I do have high arches so I don’t need the extra support. My sisters bought me a pair of Tieks for my birthday, you may want to give those a try for more support. Just a suggestion.

    • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 18, 2017

Good to know, I have heard good things about Tieks and didn’t know how they were for arch support. Thanks!

      • Jill January 3, 2018

I had Tieks before Rothy’s and I feel like they ultimately have less support somehow. While the foldability is nice, I experienced more hot spots when doing a lot of walking with them.

I also found I always felt frumpy in the Tieks. The Rothy points make even yoga pants look put together. I also have a limited edition pair of the loafers (green plaid round toe). Next on my list Marigold and Cherry.

  • Lee4 October 17, 2017

I’ve been waiting for this review & I’m so excited to read this! The shoes sound really great & now I’m wanting to order a pair of my own. That leopard pair is so tempting…Why did I just order some loafers from DSW the other day?? Those may be going back. Thanks for being honest with us about the shoes. Your reviews are always a great read but it’s just especially nice to know we’re getting the truth from you.

  • Cassie October 17, 2017

I had never even considered these because of my wide feet – now I shall! My feet were killing me after 8 hours in normal flats yesterday. Stupid pinkie toe.

    • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 18, 2017

Right? Come on pinky toe ruining all the fun!

    • Elise Ray October 19, 2017

I read another review were the gal had a wider foot & she said they worked!

  • Deb Fant October 17, 2017

I got myself a pair a few months ago and love them, however they have pretty much zero padding on the bottom. It is nearly like walking barefoot in terms of cushion. But they are really cute and comfortable otherwise.

    • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 18, 2017

I think Rothy’s is right in saying they are an upscale alternative to flip flops. They’re not an alternative to sneakers in regard to cushioning.

  • Lorena Lorena October 17, 2017

Oh wow I honestly did not expect much from these but its great to hear they delivered !

  • Sandra October 17, 2017

I recommend to size down if you aren’t sure or are between sizes, even if you’d size up in another brand in this style. I bought a round toe pair a couple of months ago. I have worn them A LOT. I usually wear an 8, or through the last few years an 8 1/2, which is what I got in these. I have an average width foot. Over the weekend I ended up ordering an 8. I don’t think they stretched, I think even the first time I tried them on I wondered if an 8 would be better. Every time I would wear them I would wish I had the smaller size but was “ok” in them anyway. So, i finally did it.If I need to let you know otherwise when they come in, I will update.

  • Kathryn Braun Fenner October 17, 2017

I have bugged them to make them in a 12. I gather these fit as expected, rather than larger than expected, so an 11 is probably too small for me….darn it

    • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 17, 2017

Karl wishes they made them in men’s sizes. Let’s have them start with a 12 women’s first 🙂

      • Kathryn Braun Fenner October 17, 2017

I recently got measured (Morton’s neuromas are nasty, and tight shoes the cause) and since they didn’t have the 12 Brooks in stock, they put me in a 10.5 men’s–with an orthotic, it’s basically the same. Since Rothy’s are orthotic friendly, how’s about a nice “fashion sneaker” oxford that both women and men with at least normal sized feet could both wear? Poor Karl, though…he has big feet, right? I would totally wear a Rothy’s sneaker

        • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 18, 2017

Yeah, he’s a 14 and most popular shoe brands don’t go up to that size.

        • Nancy December 15, 2017

Tell more about “orthotics friendly”. I have prescription orthotics in chunky leather shoes – looking for something that can take my orthotics and still look delicate.

    • Rosie // The Capsule Project October 27, 2017

I just received an email, Kathryn, that they now have size 12!

Great post, Allie! I love my Rothy’s and now I’m not afraid to wash them.

  • Alison French-Tubo October 17, 2017

Cute ways to style them! I only wish they had arch support…

    • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 17, 2017

What’s great is since the insole is removable you can slip in your own that has more support!

      • Deb Fant October 17, 2017

I tried putting my own Smart Feet thin insoles in them and they took up too much space and fell off my feet. Same with another kind of insole. I’d love to know what brand/style does fit and still keeps the shoe on.

        • Allie at Wardrobe Oxygen October 18, 2017

On Facebook someone mentioned Dr. Scholl’s. I know I have a pair of gel ones from them that are super thin and only the arch has a bit of depth. I haven’t tried them in my Rothy’s, only slim boots. Curious to see how they work.
