Showing the Love: Dobbin Clothing

dobbin clothing review

One of the greatest parts of blogging is learning about new brands. Brands will reach out by email and social media to share their business baby and some of these companies have become some of my favorites. I remember when I was pregnant I wished some company would make a line of dresses in ponte knit that could dress up or down with a change of accessories. I doodled in my work notebook a few different styles – simple but with little details that flattered and added interest. In October 2012, Jessica from Dobbin Clothing reached out to me by email and I found a company that made those very dresses I doodled in my notebook!

Since then a good quarter of my wardrobe is Dobbin Clothing. While I adore their ponte dresses (this one is my ultimate fave; I wear it all the time and it looks as great now as it did when I got it in ’12), I also have dresses from them in lace and stretch wool, silk blouses and tunics, trousers, skirts, and jackets (I have this one but haven’t yet featured on the blog though it’s lovely). The fit is excellent straight out of the box, the quality is stellar, the style is elegant and chic without being too trendy, and it’s all from a brand who cares about their customer and how their clothes are sourced and made.

When you purchase clothing at a department store or boutique, there’s always a markup so the retailer can make a profit. When you shop directly from the brand as you do with Dobbin Clothing, you can get incredible quality for far less. Dobbin sources high-end fabrics from the same European mills as luxury fashion brands, and produces its clothes side by side with those brands in the same top-tier New York factories. But since Dobbin Clothing is only available online, they can keep their entire line under $300 while pieces that may be of the same fabric sewn in the same factory sell at department stores for hundreds more.

And as mentioned, all of Dobbin Clothing is made in the USA. They use primarily washable fabrics to reduce the impact of dry cleaning on the environment, and they specifically create wardrobe basics that can look chic season after season requiring fewer pieces in your wardrobe. Oh, and they are utterly wonderful human beings behind the brand – since that original email in 2012 Jess has become a friend as well as one of the greatest companies to partner with in all my years of blogging. I proud to wear Dobbin Clothing, feature Dobbin Clothing on this blog, and am so thrilled when you readers comment and email me and share how much you also love the brand.

When Dobbin Clothing heard about Wardrobe Oxygen’s ten-year anniversary, they were generous enough to provide one Wardrobe Oxygen reader with a $200 shopping spree! What a great way to experience a quality brand that offers great style and fit with great ethics.

I first heard about Dobbin here, and was especially attracted to the fabric quality and the clothes being made in the USA. So over the holidays I bought the ponte pencil skirt in charcoal and the Sophia silk blouse in a snakeskin print. I’ve never owned a silk blouse of this quality, and feared it would be high maintenance. But after I wore it and hung it up, I was amazed the next day to see how the little creases from the previous day’s wear had just fallen right out due to the weight of the fabric. The skirt has become such an instant favorite worn with tunic tops and oversized sweaters, tights and boots, that I need one in black. Again, the fabric is substantial quality and just goes right back into shape after wearing.

So many nice things to choose from! Too bad there are no petites but some of their blouses seem to have bracelet of 3/4 sleeves. I could make those work. And a good jacket or dress is always worth tailoring if the bust works for me. (That’s my problem area lol.)

  27. brazenspider
    February 25, 2015 / 4:14 pm

That black dress is great! I love the idea of clothes that can be machine washed, last for years and still look great, and are produced ethically!

    February 24, 2015 / 1:30 pm

I think I like this company- and I never say that! It’s so nice to see nice clothes, with a practical mentality (sure, not dry cleaning is great for the environment, but it’s also great in a practical sense) that care about quality, good labor, etc. Do you know if their silk items are washable too? I like the Sophie blouses, and I love the look and feel of silk, just not the dry cleaning:/

    • February 24, 2015 / 1:37 pm

I’ve washed my Sophie blouse several times, I put it in a lingerie bag and wash on the gentle cycle with the rest of my gentle pieces and line dry. 🙂

    February 24, 2015 / 1:05 pm

I wore the Dobbin Eva in berry for my daughter’s wedding last year. It’s a great dress but I’ve lost about 15 lbs since I wore it and now it looks sort of forlorn. I’m hoping a good seamstress can help me out. A gift cert to Dobbin would be a god-send.

  67. Sadie von Scrumptious

One of my favorite parts of your blog is getting introduced to brands I might otherwise never have found. I’ve long been a huge ponte fan, so a company that does a lot of ponte is a company for me! I love the Jackie ponte dress.

  77. February 24, 2015 / 11:57 am

  78. Sharon
    February 24, 2015 / 11:39 am

They have excellent customer service. When I ordered a dress from them, it was unfortunately too big and looked dowdy on me (just the wrong dress for my shape). The rep was so courteous and communicative, and processed my return quickly.

That being said, I would love the Sophie Silk Crepe de Chine Blouse in Pale Sea Green Ikat to wear under a blazer.

    February 24, 2015 / 10:32 am

    sigh, no plus sizes

    • February 24, 2015 / 10:35 am

I know, but they are a smaller business. The more sizes offered the more cost to the business, which is why so many small businesses stick with regular or plus, no petite or tall. Do know their sizing is generous, I wear a 12 in most of their clothes while a 14 in many other brands. And if they keep growing you never know they may extend their sizing in the near future!

  89. Glenda
