In this weekend's Weekend Reads, I shared a teal and black fall mini capsule wardrobe from Ann Taylor, and several of you asked to see how I'd actually style the pieces. Ask and ye shall receive! I put together 12 fall outfits to show how versatile this little collection can be.

When creating this capsule, I imagined you already had a few wardrobe basics: dark wash jeans, maybe a white shirt and/or a fitted black turtleneck, a pair of flats, a work tote, possibly a pair of knee-high boots. You don't need to buy an entirely new wardrobe to make a capsule work. Sometimes it's just a matter of adding a few interesting pieces to what you already own. For more inspiration check out my guide on how to create a capsule wardrobe.

Below, I'm sharing the original capsule wardrobe, why I chose these pieces, and 12 outfit ideas for everything from work to weekends and evenings out.

Why I Chose These Pieces

I was seeing that large belt not worn through belt loops, but over waistband when tucking in tops to create a waist. I own a similar belt and have also worn it to cinch the Chesterfield coat. It's an outfit detail you may not consider but can really finish a look.

There is also a sleeveless top in this same teal and black paisley print, but I felt that was a bit too matchy-matchy so I added it in black. It still look dressy, but will be easier to mix and match with items both in this mini capsule and what may already be in your closet (white or ivory jeans, any color of trousers, a beaded or sequin skirt for the holidays). BTW there is also a skirt in this print. It's one of those festive but not holiday prints that will work well into winter.

The faux leather and mixed media jacket is a modern alternative to a blazer. Wear it over collared shirts, keeping the shirt collar inside. It can also dress up t-shirts, shells, and turtlenecks, add warmth to dresses, and be a lightweight piece of outerwear for fall and spring.

The capelet sweater is comfortable, versatile, but not boring. This cape detail has been in style for a few seasons and it's such a statement, it's relatively trend resistant. The color teal is also in style, but also trend resistant (in fact I am wearing this fall a teal sweater and skirt set from Ann Taylor I got three years ago).

12 Fall Outfits from This Mini Capsule Wardrobe

These outfits show how to mix the paisley blouse and pants, black midi skirt, teal capelet sweater, and faux leather jacket with a few wardrobe basics. I've included ideas for dressing up the matching paisley set, making the pieces work for the office, styling them with dark wash denim, and using accessories to change the feel of an outfit.

Some looks are polished enough for work or dinner, while others are comfortable for everyday life. And while these are Ann Taylor pieces, the styling ideas work just as well with similar clothing you may already own.

I didn't add the coat to the outfits because as the temps drop, it will be a given with any outfit. Owning a previous year version of this coat, I know it's one that can dress down with jeans or look elevated with dresses and cocktail pantsuits.

Some other accessories added: these earrings and this brooch, this tote and this tote, these flats, these jeans, this shirt, these knee-high boots, these glasses and this lipcolor.

One of my favorite things about a mini capsule wardrobe is how a few interesting pieces can make clothes you already own feel new again. You don't need every item in this collection, and you certainly don't need to wear these outfits exactly as shown. Think of them as inspiration for mixing prints, playing with proportions, and getting more creative with your fall wardrobe.

Which outfit is your favorite? And if you'd like to see more of these mini capsules styled into complete outfits, let me know!

  1. So I had a skirt in a similar color pattern from Express circa 1990 and I wore that thing until it fell apart! Have searches for that combo ever since! Please let us know when AT runs their next sale, regretting not buying last weekend. Also, I’ve always found teal hard to match with jeans but I see dark wash is key. What a great capsule for a winter seasonal palette!
