What Shoes to Wear with Different Jeans

A simple guide for popular denim silhouettes

Right now there are so many styles of denim in fashion. But what shoes do you wear with the different styles of jeans?

I break down which shoes look best with the most popular denim styles

Light Yellow Arrow

Wide Leg Jeans

Wide leg jeans need substance for balance. Lug soles, platforms, and clogs are great choices. Athletic and casual, or more refined, all work as long as the shoe has heft.

Cropped Wide Leg Jeans

You either want shoes that slip under the hem, or show your ankle. Look for a boot with a higher shaft or a sleeker shoe that lets the denim be the focus.

Ankle Length  Straight Jeans

A popular style for over a decade, this style of jean looks best with showing some ankle. Low-profile  sneakers, flats, loafers, and sleek shoes with low to no heel.

Full Length Straight Jeans

Like classic Levi's 501's this style of jean looks good with a broad range of shoes. Steer clear of overly chunky or delicate shoes but otherwise most anything goes!

Bootcut Jeans

Just like with wide leg jeans, you want a shoe with substance to balance the flare at the hem. Chunkier or platform sneakers, lug soles, or a boot with a chunkier block heel works.

Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans can look unbalanced with a chunky shoe. You want to either have the shoe go over the hem or be low profile enough to show some ankle.

Mom Jeans

Mom jeans as well as relaxed and barrel jeans look best with a shoe with some substance, but a lower rise so it doesn't get caught up in the tapered hem.
