Vacation Capsule Wardrobe for Women Over 40: 14 Garments, 30 Looks
I see you, grown women, heading to you search engine and social media platforms looking for advice on what to pack for a vacation. When we were young, we'd throw in a couple swimsuits, t-shirts, and denim cutoffs and would be good to go. But now that we're grown, we know what we wear impacts our experience… and what we want to experience is far more varied. You need outfits that can go from a morning hike to an outdoor café to lounging at the resort pool to dinner and drinks at a nice restaurant. There may be client meetings between excursions and spa treatments, or you may be looking forward to museums, historic sites, and seeing the sights. And you want to fit it all in one suitcase.
This vacation capsule wardrobe is built for warm weather and humidity without exposing a lot of skin. Elegant, elevated, but comfortable with a decent amount of breathable coverage, whether it's for personal comfort, sun protection, or respect in historic and religious buildings.
TL;DR
The Quick Version
- 14 garments (plus accessories, outerwear, and swim) that create 30+ outfits
- Size-inclusive: entire capsule available to XXL, majority to 3X
- Warm weather and humidity ready, with UPF built into key pieces
- No shorts required! Relaxed, breathable coverage that still looks elevated
- Brands: Eileen Fisher, Lands’ End, Athleta, Coolibar, Camper, Keds, Archies
- Fits in a single piece of luggage (depending on what else you pack)
Inspired by the new arrivals at Eileen Fisher (hello sustainable and inclusive fashion in breathable fabrics), I created this real-life vacation capsule wardrobe that can work for a multitude of situations. Beach getaways, European city tours, river cruises, all-inclusive resorts, and those R&R vacations with a hotel pool, a great on-site restaurant, and a coastal walk.
This vacation capsule can be simplified for a shorter trip, expanded to be your daily wardrobe from May to September. You can add more elevated pieces or pare down the formality and replace with pieces ready for active excursions. Replace the raincoat with a caftan, the blazer with a ruana or lightweight cardigan, the linen shirt with a shirtdress that plays double-duty with more coverage. I hope this capsule gets you thinking beyond the typical vacation fashion that often relies on exposed skin, tropical prints, and candy colors.

A successful capsule wardrobe has a clear color story. Pieces that can mix and match, and create a cohesive and elevated effect. The “why” behind this teal, sky blue, black, and coral color story:
- I fell for the “kelp” color at Eileen Fisher: a deep teal that looks good on so many skintones and plays nice with a wide range of colors. It is what I used to start this capsule.
- I liked the juxtaposition of the rich teal with the airy light blue. It's unexpected but works really well (and ice blue is a hot trend for 2026).
- While summer and vacation is usually about brown, white, cream, and gold, I liked how black actually added a chic pop to the color palette. Choosing linen makes the black vacation-appropriate and the strong color anchors the whole palette.
- Speaking of pop, I have hints of lilac but the real standout color is a bold coral that goes with absolutely everything.
These are also trend-resistant colors. This capsule will look just as good next summer as it does this one. That’s intentional; you shouldn’t have to rebuild your travel wardrobe year after year. Also, these colors play nice with so many other colors, they should infuse beautifully into your existing closet.

The Clothing: What’s in Here and Why
Eileen Fisher: The Foundation
Almost all of the clothing in this capsule is Eileen Fisher, and that’s not a coincidence. Eileen Fisher pieces are designed to work together across seasons and years; textiles are repeated and while colors change, they always work well together. The fabrics are breathable yet elegant, classic yet in contemporary silhouettes. And every piece from Eileen Fisher is available in sizes XXS-3X with some pieces also available in petites.
Eileen Fisher is also a genuinely sustainable fashion brand. Regenerative, organic, and recyclable fabrics, methods to reduce water, energy, and chemicals. The brand’s Renew program takes back and resells pieces in excellent condition; at this pricepoint and with this quality, shopping secondhand EF is a smart move.
I specifically chose relaxed silhouettes — wide-leg pants, a shirtdress with adjustable waistband, tops that float off curves. This isn’t just aesthetic; relaxed fits breathe better in heat and humidity. They work after a long flight. They work when you’re sunburned, or bloated from restaurant meals, or just tired. They’re kind to a fluctuating figure, which we grown women know quite well.
The Eileen Fisher Sky Blue Linen Shirtdress: The Real MVP
If there’s one piece worth calling out, it’s the Eileen Fisher sky blue organic linen shirtdress. At first glance, it's just a basic dress. But it's actually a major multitasker:
- It's a dress you can customize with number of buttons buttoned and how much you cinch the waist
- It's a tunic layered over the teal or matching blue pants (dresses over pants is back and I'm embracing this comfy trend)
- It's a duster worn open like a jacket
- It's a swim coverup!
One piece, four distinct outfits. I'm not down for garments worn in unrealistic ways (I will never turn my shirt into a halter top), but this piece truly lives multiple lives with comfort and style.
The Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pant: Your Hike-to-Lunch Workhorse
The tan Brooklyn Ankle Pant from Athleta is the one non-Eileen Fisher bottom in this capsule, and it earns that spot. A Wardrobe Oxygen top seller month after month, these pants are multitasking workhorses. The UPF 40 performance fabric doesn’t look like performance fabric. Polished enough for lunch, practical enough for a coastal hike, breathable, quick-drying, and the tan works as a true neutral alongside all three core colors.
UPF: Sun Protection Built Into the Clothes You’d Actually Wear
I know I am not the only one who slathered on the baby oil, covered the record album with foil and tucked it under my chin, and spent way too many hours in tanning beds. We're older, we're wiser, and we know it's smart to protect ourselves from the sun. While one should still wear sunscreen, having clothes that are stylish and protecting is a win/win combination:
- The Coolibar coral tee is UPF 50+ and looks like a regular tee. The color alone lifts the whole capsule.
- The Lands’ End striped hooded tunic is UPF 50 and works as a beach coverup, casual top for a beach town walk, or an extra layer on a cool boat ride. I own a previous year version and have often tucked it into pants and shorts for a different effect.
- I didn't know that the Athleta Brooklyn pants were UPF 40 until I crafted this capsule; even another reason to love them!
- Recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation, the North Face Class V Brimmer Hat offers coverage and UPF 40+.
The Lands' End Rain Jacket: Because Weather Happens
Nothing derails a trip like being underprepared for a sudden storm. The Lands’ End rain jacket stuffs into its own pocket and takes up almost no space. I own this exact jacket and it has been a lifesaver on many vacations. While it comes in classic neutrals, the cheery options like this lavender improve one's mood on a rainy day. It also doubles as an extra layer in any aggressively air-conditioned restaurant or museum and I've worn as a windbreaker for windy beach days.
The Lands' End Dark Olive Swimsuit: Low Fuss, High Confidence
A good travel swimsuit is one that makes you look good and feel good no matter your activity. I own this suit and it's a favorite for vacation because it lifts and smooths without gas pains, looks expensive, and stays in place if I dive into the pool, swim laps, or go out with the boogie board. Black is safe, navy is classic, but so is this dark olive that is elegant and surprisingly versatile.
Layers and Scarves for Religious Sites (and Everywhere Else)
If your trip includes any religious buildings: churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, you’ll need to cover shoulders and sometimes knees. This capsule handles that without sacrificing style or breathability. The oblong scarf doubles as a shawl or head covering, the sweater is lightweight enough to shove in your bag and pull out once you reach your destination, the shirtdress covers the knees and elbows whether worn as a dress or as a duster, and the blazer goes with everything for an easy layering piece.
ALISON'S NOTE:
I build my capsule wardrobes off items I own or know well. In this capsule, I personally own the tote, the clutch, the sandals, the flip-flops, the swimsuit, the tank, and the rain jacket. Your trust is of the utmost importance to me.
The Shoes: Comfortable and Stylish Are Not Opposites
We grown women have learned if we care for our feet, every journey is more enjoyable. No need to sacrifice style for comfort and support; these shoes offer it all:
Camper Dana Sandals
Camper has been making comfort-forward footwear for decades and the Dana sandal is a personal go-to. Contoured footbed, adjustable strap, a look that goes from cobblestones to a waterfront dinner. These sandals went viral on TikTok last summer for surviving 10K step days in NYC and I can attest to the fact they really do feel good and look good.
Keds BlissMove Slip-On Sneakers
Keds recently launched BlissMove, a collection of shoes designed to alleviate female-specific pain points by providing heel and arch support, a wider fit at the toe, and a sculpted midsole that mimics the natural shape of a woman’s foot. Awarded the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance, they have removable, rinseable, odor-resistant, antimicrobial, and breathable footbeds that provide shock-absorbing heel and arch support. I loved how these matched the lavender of the jacket and are a slip-on style making it easy at TSA.
Archies Flip Flops
Archies are an Australian brand that builds orthotic-level arch support into a flip flop. The Wardrobe Oxygen community has been loud about their love of Archies and I understand why. For pool, beach, and casual days when you want the ease of a flip flop without wrecking your feet, these are the ones to reach for. Again, I recommend going with a pop of color instead of a neutral; matching the beach bag is a stylish hack.
The Bags: Three Bags, Every Occasion Covered
Coral Mesh Tote
Okay, I don't link to Amazon anymore, but I searched and couldn't find this bag or equivalent anywhere else. I own this exact bag, I took it on my VirginVoyages cruise, and have used it so much and it's still rocking and looking great. This bag weighs almost nothing and packs super flat. I've also stuffed it into a day bag to have for potential purchases. It has a shape and a pocket so it's more functional than other mesh bags. I was thrilled to see it came in the same coral as the flip flops, creating such a fun and chic effect.
Athleta Water-Resistant Day Bag
This bag has a devoted following in the Wardrobe Oxygen community and across the internet. Water-resistant means it travels on boat rides, through rainy day markets, and to outdoor venues without panic. The crossbody silhouette keeps your hands free, or shorten the strap for a shoulder bag. It’s sleek enough for happy hour and practical enough for a hike.
Quince Leather Clutch with Optional Strap
I own this bag and think it's brilliant, especially for travel. Big enough to hold your phone, sunglasses, and purse essentials this can be a crossbody or a clutch. Because it's not structured, it's lightweight and packs flat. It's an easy way to elevate looks for evening and a style that will remain chic for seasons to come.

30 Outfits: What to Wear and When
I created 30 outfits with the items in this vacation capsule wardrobe… but really I could have created even more. There is true versatility, and it's easy to remove or add one or two items to customize it to your needs. Below are thumbnails of the 30 outfits; tap on any one to see larger. Scroll or tap to see all of them and then tap outside the slideshow to return to this screen.
Morning Hike or Active Day
The Athleta Brooklyn pants take center stage, but depending on your activity, the sky blue linen cropped pants from Eileen Fisher may be a better option. With arch support, activities with less walking can be great with the Archies or Camper sandals.
Afternoon Sightseeing or Outdoor Café
With every pair of shoes supportive enough for at least casual walking, you have a lot of options. The linen will offer the most breathability for hot days while still looking elevated for a nice lunch.
Beach or Hotel Pool
Whether you're lounging at the hotel, or hiking it to a more private beach, this capsule offers variety. If you plan to spend a lot of time in water, you may wish to pack a second swimsuit and a pair of water shoes.
Boat Ride or Outdoor Adventure
Different shoes but same goal: sun protection and comfort. Mixing linen with UPF will achieve your goals. For the boat, go with the Archies unless you know you'll be walking a great deal before or after.
Elevated Evening
A switch to the clutch, adding shiny earrings, going monochromatic, and mixing in the teal satin pieces will elevate this capsule for elegant dinners, clubs, and event venues.
Size Inclusivity: What This Capsule Actually Covers
At Wardrobe Oxygen, I strive to make my capsule wardrobes as inclusive as possible. This vacation collection has everything available at least to XXL with the majority available to 3X and some items offered in petite and tall:
- Eileen Fisher carries the majority of its collection in sizes XXS-3X with many also available in petite. I appreciate that EF shows each item on a straight model and a plus model to get a better idea of how it may actually fit.
- Lands’ End is one of the most reliably size-inclusive retailers at this price point. The swimsuit, the jacket, and the UPF tunic all extend into plus sizes with plenty of reviews from customers assisting with sizing.
- While Athleta has been quietly quitting its plus size collection, the Brooklyn Ankle Pant is one of its mainstays, available in sizes 00-26 with petite and tall options.
- The graphic printed tee from Sanctuary is only available up to XXL, however here is a link to the same tee (though different prints) available in plus sizes
- Coolibar sizes the coral UPF tee through XXL. This UPF shirt is long-sleeved, but the same color, UPF 50+, and sizes XS-3X.
- Footwear: Camper, Keds BlissMove, and Archies all offer extended size options.
I’m a size 14/16 and 5’3”, and I built this capsule with my own body in mind. Especially when on vacation, relax your mindset regarding those archaic fashion rules geared towards making you appear a quarter-inch taller, narrower, or more hourglass of a shape. Rock the cropped pants, the untucked tops, the volume with volume… when the fabrics are breezy like this it's chic, not bulky.
Your Capsule Questions Answered
The Bottom Line
Packing for vacation can cause serious anxiety. My hope is this vacation capsule wardrobe provides inspiration, showing you that you don't need a lot in your suitcase to look great, feel great, and be ready for any event that comes your way on your getaway. Who knows, you may already own similar items in your closet and now see new ways to style them. You don't need a big closet for big style; shopping thoughtfully and thinking with a capsule mindset can extend your wardrobe without having to extend your budget.

Love this. I second your rec for the Eileen Fisher linen shirtdress — and there’s also a tunic version that is equally good. In 2026, Eileen Fisher linen is about the only thing I can think of that is actually worth the price. Yes, it costs more, but no other linen compares in terms of quality and longevity. Buy what you love, because it’s going to be with you for a while!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! We just booked a mom-daughter summer trip overseas, and I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by what and how to pack. Your advice is always so grounded, helpful, and practical.
