None of these bags are from Amazon, Target, or Walmart. A few are brands you may not have heard of. Some may be names on other lists, but the style I chose may not be and I explain why. All are quality totes that will last for years and not drive you batty.

Best Overall Beach Tote: Scout Checking In Tote

I have been a Scout Bags fan for almost two decades. I got one of their original storage bins, used it in my kid's bedroom to hold her stuffies and once she outgrew that, it has lived ever since in the trunk of our car, organizing jumper cables, shopping bags, and such. The Stiff One soft cooler goes on all our road trips and is great for picnics before concerts at Wolf Trap. And I love the Deano for the pool (I have the DC version!). But for the beach? The Checking In Tote is clutch.

The Scout Checking In Tote is 22″ wide, making it wide enough to carry multiple towels or even your yoga mat. There's an interior buckle strap that can be used to cinch in the wide sides for a more compact carry, or to secure loose items on the go. Unlike the traditional Scout bags, this is a woven, similar to a beach chair, that is durable (holds up to 50 lbs), water-friendly, sand-friendly, lightweight (less than 1.5 lbs), and able to pack flat in luggage.

Best Packable Beach Tote: Old Navy Mesh Tote

When I went on my VirginVoyages cruise, I took a tote I had bought before on Amazon and adored. It weighed hardly anything, big enough to carry all I needed for a day off the ship at the private beach club or at the pool, or to the gym, or going on a excursion, but packed down to nothing in a suitcase or even a purse. It was perfect except it was from some sketchy fly-by-night brand on Amazon. And this year, Old Navy came out with the Mesh Tote.

The Old Navy Mesh Tote is essentially the same exact bag, but better. Same solid base, big a larger interior pocket and a magnet snap closure. Flexible to accomodate plenty of stuff, but designed to look nice even if it's only holding a few things. While great for the beach, this is also great for the farmers market and tucking into your purse for days at the mall.

Best Travel Beach Tote: Aloha Holo Holo Tote

Aloha bags make a lot of the “best of” lists, but it's usually The Daytripper bag. And while that bag is stellar, I don't think it's the best beach bag. The zip closure is lovely, but for a day at the beach or pool where you're carrying a towel or possibly stuff for more than one person, it's too small. The Aloha Holo Holo tote, IMO is the brand's best beach bag.

At 23″ wide with a 13″ strap drop length and super lightweight, this is a bag that can hold a lot and be comfortable carrying it all. A splash-proof fabric that is easy to clean and folds up easily, a reversible design (two bags in one!), and a zipper pocket make the Aloha Holo Holo Tote great for travel. Props to my travel-loving friend who first turned me on to Aloha bags; they look good and they last forever.

Best Waterproof Beach Tote for Activity: RUX Waterproof Tote 50L

If your fun in the sun includes mud, rough waves, or carting your gear on a boat or ATV the RUX Waterproof 50L Tote is the bag for you. This is the bag you can lash to a kayak, bungee to the back of an ATV, and not freak out if the whole thing goes overboard or into a puddle.

I know the Bogg Bag has a devoted following, and I may get some hate from this but I just don't get the love. The bag is heavy, and the straps are so wonky. The Original Bogg in the large size is 3 lbs before you even fill it up, and the straps are so short and stiff they rarely fit over one's shoulder.

If you're into it for all the Bogg accessories, I get it. It's pretty cool. But if you just want a similar bag that is sturdy, tip-proof, easy to hose down at the end of the day… may I suggest the Simple Modern Getaway Bag?
