The Best Raincoats for Women in 2026
TL;DR
The Quick Version
The best raincoat depends on what you're doing in it. For serious downpours: look for taped seams, a waterproof rating of 15,000mm+, and a hood that actually stays put. For work and going out: a water-resistant trench buys you style points and handles most real-world rain. For everything else: there's a category below for you, including plus sizes, ponchos, and active options.
I grew up on the East Coast but I have still spent many years being wrong about rain. Wrong about whether I needed a jacket, wrong about how waterproof “water resistant” actually is, and wrong believing raincoats couldn't be functional and fashionable. Thanks to two decades of writing about fashion here at Wardrobe Oxygen and connecting with you, women across the country and the globe, I have learned much, and want to share my knowledge with you.
This post covers the best raincoats for women across every situation, including personal details with the coats I own, close friends own, or I have tried at some point. I've also included a dedicated plus size section because finding a well-made, actually waterproof raincoat in extended sizes is harder than it should be in 2026.
Before we get started, we need to talk about the difference between waterproof and water resistant. They are not the same, but brands hope you don't realize that. You know me, I want you to be an informed consumer.
Waterproof vs. Water Resistant: What You Actually Need to Know
Water resistant means the fabric repels light moisture, a drizzle, some mist, a short shower. It is not built for sustained rain and will eventually soak through. Most fashion raincoats, trenches, and “packable jackets” fall into this category.
Waterproof means the jacket has a membrane or coating that prevents water from penetrating under sustained pressure. True waterproof jackets have taped or welded seams (so water can't sneak through needle holes), a waterproof rating of at least 10,000mm (15,000mm+ for serious weather), and usually a DWR (durable water repellent) coating on the outer fabric as well.
If you live somewhere it actually rains, or you travel to places where it does, you want at least one truly waterproof jacket in your closet. Those who live in places where there's the occasional shower or drizzle, water resistant can usually get the job done.
For example, here in Maryland, a water resistant jacket worked for me most of the time as I commuted to work via Metro and walking a few short blocks. However, for camping with the Girl Scouts come rain or shine, travel to rainy locales, and taking the dogs out during a downpour, I have appreciated my truly waterproof raincoat.
Best Trench Coats That Are Truly Waterproof
Most classic trench coats are water resistant at best, which is fine for a commute in a drizzle but not for standing outside in a downpour. That said, a good trench is the most versatile piece of outerwear you can own and several brands have figured out how to make them properly waterproof without sacrificing the silhouette.
- Rains Suva Hardshell: Rains is a Danish brand that since 2012 has been making performance outerwear that is fashionable too. The Suva Hardshell is a waterproof trench from soft and lightweight 3-layer fabric with taped seams and a matte surface. With a detachable belt, detachable hood, and waterproof coated zip closure hidden behind a placket, this is the epitome of fashion and function. Sizes XS-XL; $295
- Lands' End Squall Waterproof Modern Trench Raincoat: Fully seam sealed and a waterproof shell helps keep you dry in inclement weather; windproof fabric prevents cold air from cutting through and helps trap warmth in. Fully lined, this trench is classic, chic, and will keep you cozy even in a chilly downpour. Sizes XS-3X with petite options; $199.95
- Lolë Alizé Trench Coat: Made with sustainable, recycled, breathable 3K fabric with sealed seams, this coat looks great with or without the belt, and has a hood that stows in the collar. Lolë is known for high quality coats, and this one offers that quality with elegant classic trench styling. Sizes XXS-XXL; $128
- Helly Hansen Jane Trench Coat: High performance with classic design, the Jane from Helly Hansen is made with the iconic HELLY TECH® PROTECTION fabric system which makes it waterproof, breathable and windproof. With a removable hood and optional belt, this is versatile and great for travel to rainy locales. Sizes XS-XL; $275
Best Waterproof Raincoats for Serious Weather
These are the jackets you reach for when the forecast predicts a downpour and you need to leave the house. These coats have taped seams, proper waterproof ratings, hoods that cinch down and stay put.
- Lands' End Squall Packable Waterproof Raincoat: I own this raincoat, and have for several years. It has been in hurricanes and on camping trips that went on rain or shine and road trips and kept me covered as we had to head outside in a downpour to declogg gutters. The slightly longer back helps rain slide off curves; the taped seams, storm flap, zip pockets, and elasticized cuffs keep rain out. Sizes XS-3X with petite and tall options; $149.95 (but often on sale)
- Patagonia Torrentshell 3L The Torrentshell has been one of the most consistently recommended women's rain jackets for years, and the 3L version is deserving of its raves. Three-layer construction, fully taped seams, a packable design, and Patagonia's recycled materials commitment makes this a great investment. Sizes XXS-XXL; $189
- REI Co-op Rainier Rain Jacket: Made from 2.5-layer recycled ripstop nylon shell with HydroWall™ membrane, taped seams, storm flap, pit zips, and a DWR finish shields you from rain, while staying breathable and dry on the inside. All this and an under-$100 pricepoint. Sizes XS-3X; $99.95
- Columbia Weekend Adventure II: If you desire a longer jacket that is still as high performance, this is it. Omni-Tech™ fully seam sealed prevents moisture from seeping into every seam while using waterproof-breathable fabric, so you stay completely dry in the rain, plus with zippered pockets, back vents, adjustable cuffs, and a drawcord-adjustable waist offers function and convenience. Sizes XS-3X, $160
Best Everyday Raincoats for Women
These are your everyday grab-and-go options, but still performing well enough that if you get caught in a deluge, you won't end up sopping wet. And, the styles will work with a range of clothing and seasons.
- Eddie Bauer Girl on the Go® Waterproof Trench Coat: While called a trench, this looks more like a classic raincoat, but with nice details. So nice, it's one of my recommendations for the best packable travel jackets. A two-layer shell with WeatherEdge® 5k/5k waterproofing, sealed seams, and StormRepel® DWR finish, you're going to stay dry even in a surprise downpour. A removable hood makes this also a great windbreaker and early spring topper. Sizes XS-3X with tall and petite options
- Stutterheim Mosebacke Lightweight Raincoat: There are some pieces of clothing that are IYKYK iconic pieces; the Stutterheim Mosebacke is one of them. The a-line style makes it work well over dresses, pants, and even chunky sweaters. The ultra lightweight waterproof fabric and tailored with triple-welded seams keeps you dry without bulk; this is a coat that will last a lifetime. Sizes XS-XL; $320
- L.L.Bean Wharf Street Raincoat: Featuring a TEK® waterproof-breathable shell, mesh lined upper body and mesh back for breathability, this is a coat that will keep you dry and comfortable, even during a humid summer storm. Sizes XXS-3X and petite options; $170

Stylish and Functional Raincoats
Yes, a raincoat can be fashionable and functional! These chic performance raincoats prove just that.
- SOIA&KYO NALANI Swing Coat in Waterproof Twill: This waterproof swing coat combines practicality with style. The detachable hood and funnel collar add versatility, while the boxy silhouette and breathable waterproof shell make it a polished choice for rainy days. Sizes XXS-XL; $345
- Ilse Jacobsen Lightweight Hooded Raincoat: Made from lightweight, waterproof rubberized PU with a soft tricot backing, this is comfortable, lightweight, and functional. Double-welded seams and detachable hood with a faux-leather neck strap adds both function and refined detail. Sizes 4-16; $219 (but currently on sale)
- Seasalt Cornwall Sea Drift Waterproof Coat: With a 5000mm waterproof rating, this coat has a PFC-free waterproof coating on a 55% linen/45% organic cotton Tin Cloth® outer with fully taped seams and lined for added warmth. All that and a chic yet classic style with toggle buttons and a swing style that accommodates chunky knits. US sizes 6-22/24; $328
- Rainkiss Rain Poncho: One wouldn't usually call a poncho fashionable, but then I'd say they have never seen ponchos by Rainkiss. I own one of these and I have used it in conditions I would describe as “biblical.” Rainkiss is an Amsterdam-based brand that makes 100% waterproof ponchos from recycled polyester with taped seams and in some of the coolest prints. However, know these are “one size” saying they best fit up to 76″; I'd say based on my experience these fit up to a size 20. One size; $89
Best Plus Size Raincoats
Finding a well-made, truly waterproof raincoat in extended sizes is harder than it should be. These options deliver on both fit and function.
- Coldwater Creek Pack-It Jacket: Thousands of positive reviews and I have a friend who took this to Scotland and swore by it. A stowable hood, cinchable waist, and true weather protection with a classic customizable style. Sizes XS-3X with petite to XL; $109.95
- Columbia Lillian Ridge II Jacket: Omni-Shield™ repels moisture and resists stains, a longer back, drawcord waist, and snap sides provide customizable comfort.
- Lands' End Squall A-Line Rain Jacket: Don't let the low ratings scare you; most of them are due to this jacket being too roomy. Waterproof and windproof with sealed seams, an adjustable hood with visor, and fleece lined upper body, this will keep you warm and dry while looking great. Sizes XS-3X with petite and tall options; $169.95
- L.L.Bean Mountain Classic Raincoat: A chic nautical style, this recycled packable nylon jacket has a PFC/PFAS-free durable water repellent (DWR) finish and the soft flannel lining wicks moisture. Sizes XS-3X and petite options; $200
- Universal Standard Derjon Trench: This is the only coat on this list that isn't truly waterproof, but I own it and it has held its own during a light- to medium-rain while also garnering compliments (and even a stranger stopping me to ask where I got it). Classic, elegant, water-resistant, and the most size inclusive on the list. Sizes 00-40; $248
Your Raincoat Questions Answered
What is the difference between waterproof and water resistant?
Water resistant repels light moisture and handles a drizzle or short shower. Waterproof means the jacket has a membrane and taped or welded seams that prevent water from penetrating under sustained rain. If you'll be outside in real rain for more than a few minutes, you want waterproof.
What does a waterproof rating mean?
Waterproof ratings measure how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before it leaks, measured in millimeters. A rating of 10,000mm handles moderate rain. 15,000mm and above handles sustained heavy rain. Anything below 5,000mm is water resistant, not truly waterproof.
What are taped seams and why do they matter?
When a jacket is sewn together, the needle holes are potential leak points. Taped or welded seams seal those holes so water cannot penetrate. If serious waterproofing is important to you, always check that a jacket has taped seams, not just a waterproof coating on the fabric.
What is DWR coating?
DWR stands for durable water repellent. It's a coating applied to the outer fabric of a rain jacket that causes water to bead and roll off rather than saturating the material. DWR wears off over time and can be refreshed with a product like Nikwax or by tumble drying on low.
Can a trench coat be truly waterproof?
Yes, but most are not. Traditional trenches are water resistant at best. Brands like Rains and Stutterheim make truly waterproof trench silhouettes using coated or rubberized fabrics with welded seams. If you want a waterproof trench, look specifically for those construction details.
What should I look for in a raincoat hood?
A good hood should have an adjustable drawstring to cinch it around your face in wind, enough depth to cover your head without blocking peripheral vision, and ideally a wire brim to keep it from flopping. Hoods that stow into the collar are convenient for switching between rainy and dry conditions.
What plus size raincoat options are available?
Several brands offer genuinely waterproof raincoats in extended sizes. Columbia, REI Co-op, Coldwater Creek, Lands' End (to 26W), and Ashley Stewart all carry plus size options. See the dedicated plus size section above for specific picks.

Great post! Raining now and I am wo dering if I want somethig other than my basic black North Face Goretex.
This is a seriously useful post since I have been hunting for a raincoat lately. Just ordered the Ralph Lauren one – yippeee!! thanks again!
I own one in each category you list. I try to buy light colors so when it’s dark I can be seen. So all of mine need to be washable.
These are all such great options! I feel like I’ve struggled for years to find a rain jacket that I truly love—they have either been too thin, too warm, too noisy, too youthful looking, etc. I ordered the one J Crew has out now, in the pink color. It’s very cute and I love the longer backside! I had to return it b/c I went with a large and it was way too big. My local store only had navy so I went with that in a medium. I’m hopeful I’ve finally found one I’ll be happy with (I’ve already pulled the tags off or I’d probably consider one of these options).
I live in Seattle and have a couple of raincoats (casual, dressy, etc.). One of the best coats is from Costco and it’s only $20. (Yes, it is waterproof and breathable!)
I purchased the first coat about 4 years ago then lost some weight and bought a smaller size the next year. I wear it all the time and just picked up another one in a different color so I have one that is a neutral and another that is a fun color. The coat comes in a pouch that zips and is great for traveling as it squishes down to almost nothing but retains it’s shape and appearance after unpacking.
They also have a similar coat in Men’s.
Here is the link to the Costco coat.

I love my LLBean rain jacket! It does fold up into its pocket so very convenient on a trip or long bike ride.
May I add one more to your list? Boden makes a Mac that is AH-MAZING. I bought mine I want to say 3 years ago now it’s fantastic. Detachable hood, fleece lined pockets, buttons and zips and mine is a lovely bright green and blue plaid. It’s great for fall into early winter and then I bring it back for spring.
AAAH HOW DID I FORGET THIS ONE? Seriously, it is one of the coats that inspired this very post! Thank you, and thanks for your review. And for anyone interested here’s the link to the Boden Mac: http://bit.ly/2HL2GvM
