I saw this dress on Petite Early Morning Style and decided I had to have it. Great color, great fabric, it looked versatile, and it has pockets! The dress arrived… and I was underwhelmed. While the fabric is very pretty and yes, there are pockets, the rest seemed off. The placket is too bulky for the fabric, buttons weirdly spaced, and the elasticized waist even on the regular sized dress just seems way too high/short-waisted. I decided to return it.
And then I forgot to return it. Yesterday I grabbed it out of the back of my car to take to Old Navy and realized it had been over two months and Old Navy only gives you 45 days. So I decided to try it. I chose this belt because it hides the fact that this dress has almost an empire waist. I don't know if you will see me in this dress again… we shall see…

The tyranny of the short-waisted dress has to end sometime … right? Why is this happening? It’s not just because I’m pear-shaped — I think it looks awkward on just about everybody (though I think you look great here, and I agree with WendyB, I never would have known this dress didn’t fit well).
The current crop of empire dresses fills me with rage. I don’t agree with people who crow about how flattering they are because they cut at the most narrow part of the body. A girl has to turn to the side sometime, and then the illusion quickly falls apart!

I have a similar dress from the H&M concious collection but is has a sheen. I styled it on polyvore but I havent worn it yet because of the same waist issue.

I think I may have to give it to a short-waisted friend. It bugged me all day and when I came home I just felt as though it made my posture look hunched. I ordered another dress from Old Navy (gauze sundress with a lattice-work pattern at top and adjustable straps) that has the same issue. I’m okay with that one since it’s a bum-around weekend dress but even that one would look more expensive and flattering with the waist 2″ lower!
You look darling, as always. The color is great on you and you wear the style well, especially with the belt. However, I also have a dress that is short-waisted like that and it drives me batty! Maybe the belt will keep that from bothering you, but if you gave it up for that reason, I could understand.

Exactly. It’s a big reason why I usually only shop there for Emerson – their clothes don’t have a consistent fit and their return policy continues to get more stringent.
I don’t love the cut of the dress, but the color is fantastic. I do the same thing sometimes, especially with ON stuff–45 days passes so quickly!
