Universal Standard's Fit Liberty collection is 40% off again, and if you've been considering trying the brand, this is one of my favorite times to shop. I'm a longtime Universal Standard customer, and I've personally used Fit Liberty to exchange clothing when my size changed. It's one of the reasons I continue recommending the brand.

If you're unfamiliar with Fit Liberty at Universal Standard, it's a program that lets you exchange eligible clothing for a different size within a year of purchase, at no additional cost. Yes, really! And right now, the Fit Liberty collection is 40% off, making this an especially good opportunity to invest in pieces like suiting, denim, dresses, and outerwear.

Below, I'll explain how Fit Liberty works, share my experience using it, and highlight the pieces I think are worth considering during the sale.

A Note About Universal Standard Sizing:

Universal Standard uses a different sizing system than most clothing brands. For example, its size M corresponds to a conventional size 18–20. Don't assume your usual letter size will fit! I recommend checking the brand's size chart before ordering, especially if this is your first Universal Standard purchase.

What to Buy During the Universal Standard Fit Liberty Sale

Universal Standard often has sales, but they are very specific, and often Final Sale. This is a unique sale where you save a lot and have a lot of flexibility. This is what I recommend buying during this sale:

Suiting

Wearing the Beas Ponte Blazer and matching Audrey Tailored Pants, both in size XS. Both suiting pieces are part of the Fit Liberty program.

Suiting is expensive, and it matters so much if your suiting fits well. It's nice to have suiting part of Fit Liberty as you can feel better about making an investment in your wardrobe and professional style.

  • If I were shopping this sale for suiting, I would get either this blazer or this blazer with either these pants or these pants. I own the All Day Classic Blazer already (see above) and this is a classic elevated suiting fabric that can dress up or down. Pair the blazer with jeans, the pants with a sweater, the two together with a blouse and loafers for work, with a silky camisole and dressy shoes for a cocktail party. Black is safe, but the colors are really stellar, too.
  • If I didn't already own a bunch of Universal Standard ponte suiting separates, I'd be getting them during this sale. Comfortable, great for travel, great for three seasons, it's well made and looks elevated. Above, I'm wearing the Audrey Pant and the Beas Blazer, but also in the Fit Liberty collection that I recommend are the Bianca Blazer, the Four Pocket Uniform Blazer (so Ralph Lauren, so Americana Chic), the Stephanie Pants, and the Palais Pants.

Jeans

Jeans are so hard to fit, and when you have a fluctuating figure, what is a great pair can quickly become a terrible pair. I personally have used Fit Liberty for Universal Standard jeans as my size has changed over a year and I loved the style but not the new fit. Fit Liberty includes dozens of styles of Universal Standard denim including trendy new cuts and classic bestsellers.

Dresses

I purchased the Belle Breton dress in early spring; when I went to pull it out in November to take on a warm-weather vacation it no longer fit the same. I was happy to be able to exchange it via Fit Liberty and not spend more on a getaway wardrobe.

We've all bought a dress for a conference, a wedding, a vacation and then when we pull it out to wear again months later it no longer fits the way it used to. If like me, you have a fluctuating figure thanks to perimenopause, lifestyle changes, or health changes, you may worry about losing money on a dress that may only be able to be worn once. This is why Fit Liberty is so wonderful. The selection of dresses in Fit Liberty runs the gamut from casual sweatshirt dresses to elevated pieces perfect for a special occasion.

Outerwear

Wearing the Universal Standard Derjon Trench. I no longer have this one as it stopped fitting right; I now have an olive green one in my current size that I love.

Coats and jackets are expensive, and it's not unusual to be one size in early spring but when you pull out that parka or trench come fall it's no longer a great fit. The Fit Liberty collection of outerwear includes amazing options like the Derjon Trench (I own, it's alterations-friendly with clean sleeve hems) and the Henning x US Park Soft Trench which is so on-trend this season yet also a classic.

  1. The All Day Classic blazer with matching strech pants in goji berry has me salivating, but I just purchased enough US on sale in recent weeks so that they constitute a haul . . . I have to make a pause!

  2. Alison, do you find that the Odeon shirtdress requires a slip of some kind? I wasn’t sure if the lighter colors would be somewhat transparent or not. I’ve been looking for a blue & white striped dress for months (want the linen option from Frank & Eileen but just can’t spend that much) but don’t want anything that requires a full slip. I’ll definitely be wearing some type of chub rub shorts underneath!

    1. I wear it with a skin colored bra and skin-colored Thigh Society slipshorts and think if my bra was textured it also wouldn’t show. And there’s no fear of being backlit. It’s thicker than a lot of other cotton dresses. for example I got the blue and white striped Target shirtdress last summer that had the side ties and that thing is not so great when backlit and wrinkles like crazy while the Odeon is more crisp and opaque.

  3. The models all seem to have hips and the measurements show a ten inch difference between waist and hips. I’m lucky if I have a two inch difference at the top of the leg but with hanging belly and flat bottom. Is there ANY jean here or anywhere made for this shape or am I stuck with stretch pants forever?

    1. I don’t have hips, mainly belly and booty and the jeans I mention are ones I own and like (or would like if I were taller). Their jeans are Uber stretchy and I size down in them

      1. Me three! I am going to give them a try, though, I really need some new work clothes. Thanks for posting, Allison!

  4. Just an update that everything worked, including Alison’s extra discount. Now, we’ll see if the fit works! I have both the Riviera and Farrah jeans in size 12 but with recent weight gain in my tummy, they are just too uncomfortable even with stretch. So I got the Farrahs in a 14 since they were on sale. They are pretty form fitting so I hope they won’t look big in the hips.

  5. Wonderful promotion and I used it to snag another pair of the Seine high rise skinny which I love. Also thanks for the extra 10%! I was surprised though that shipping was $15.00. *gulp*

  6. Just be careful if you pull up an item and decide you like it better in a different color or variation. Not all colors of the same item offer Fit Liberty, which I find somewhat frustrating. But eventually, I realized I needed to stick to the literal item posted through Alison’s link.

  7. I sort of “ Rome up” with US for a while. I stopped getting emails, etc. I felt like they had gone too far away from the reasons I fell in love with them. This sale, and the Fit Liberty program have pulled me back in. I’m excited for the new things to arrive!
