Everlane Capsule Wardrobe: Simple Classics Made Creative and Cool

I was perusing the latest offerings from Everlane after a friend made a purchase and loved everything she ordered. I have liked Everlane for years for being a sustainable fashion brand that offers cool yet classic closet staples. I was inspired by what I found to create this Everlane capsule wardrobe. It's a collection of simple classics that should remain stylish for a while, but made creative and cool with accessories.

I only made 15 outfits because essentially, any look with one bottom (pant or skirt) can be made with the rest. And this capsule wardrobe can easily be extended with a pair of jeans (blue and/or white and/or charcoal), olive pants (cargo pants, camo pants, wool trousers, even a skirt of leather or suede).

And while this capsule is all neutrals, you could easily replace the neutrals with colors. Navy and a softer blue, forest green and teal, burgundy and blush, pumpkin and mustard… I think it would work well with two colors similar, but one darker or brighter and one lighter or more muted.

Accessories Make the Capsule Wardrobe

I have a strong focus on accessories to show you how you can create big style with a small closet. You don't necessarily need more clothes, you just need to play with styling. Belt a blazer, tie a scarf as a belt, tie a sweater around your shoulders or across your body, play with proportions, (if you wear it) use makeup as an accessory, treat socks as an accessory.

I shared a lot of accessories I personally own, or own something similar. I own this scarf in a different print, own the silver necklace and earrings, the beaded necklace, and similar earrings as the two-tone from the same jewelry brand. I own the makeup (not the lip stain… yet), have glasses from this brand, cell phone case from this brand, own the black belt, the striped socks, the ivory socks, and have bought bags from both bag brands. But they should be guidance, not gospel.

Accessories do not need to be expensive, and because they are small you can save them between times when they are trendy or when they fit your personal style. I still wear belts and scarves I bought in the 90s, jewelry I inherited from relatives, random things I found at thrift stores, yard sales, and community swaps. Save belts in an old shoe box, scarves in a box under your bed, cosmetic jewelry in Ziploc baggies to prevent tarnishing, stuff handbags with the brown paper or tissue from online orders or even with your scarf collection, and then store in an old pillowcase or dust bag.

A trend that is back this year is the white layering tee. I linked to a highly-rated one from Banana Republic Factory, but there are plenty of options out there at different pricepoints, sizes, and fits. This is a crewneck that is high enough to peek out from a sweater like the gray pullover in this capsule wardrobe. Not oversized, but not tight. Length is what makes you comfortable; it doesn't hang out below the top layer so you will likely need to tuck or choose a cropped version.
