summer mascara beauty review

While I love Too Faced’s Better Than False Lashes for a dramatic look, it’s a bit too complicated for everyday (three steps, nylon fibers, etc. etc. etc.). I had CoverGirl’s Clump Crusher Water Resistant and it was fine, but I can’t settle for fine when it comes to mascaras. I desired volume, length, and color that would stay put even when rubbing my allergy eyes or walking through DC soup-like humidity.

I was at CVS and intrigued by Maybelline Volum' Express The MegaPlush, grabbed a tube in Very Black and regretted it after one wear. VERY flexible wand which made it hard to use with my non-dominant hand, hard to wiggle between lashes for a good coating, hard to flick out outer lashes for drama, and hard to add more coats without looking a mess. This product gave me soft and non-clumpy lashes, but they looked very ordinary without volume (or volum’) or MegaPlush-ness.

I decided to try Maybelline Volum' Express The Rocket next. I got it waterproof, and in Blackest Black. Though the display in CVS made it look as though The MegaPlush gave thicker and more dramatic lashes, this appeared to offer a similar effect, but it didn’t have the weird bendy wand. Glad I tried it because I LOVE IT!

Thick, separated lashes with tons of volume. A thick formula that dries before I get splattered mascara all over my lid and holds a curl. A sturdy wand that I can wield with one hand, and flicks out the outer lashes beautifully. And truly waterproof; I can wear on lower lashes and cry, sweat, and rub without any smudging. It comes off easily by holding a cotton pad doused in makeup remover to my eye for 10 seconds and then wiping down. I seriously like this mascara better than DiorShow, it gives me the drama I desire for daytime and can build up for a more intense evening look. All that and less than $10, I just HAD to share with you!

  1. I’m a real mascara junkie. Have been using L’Oreal Telescopic lately and it’s excellent for length. I should try the Rocket next time!

  2. I received a sample of Dior Diorshow Blackout Mascara. At your urging, I use it sparingly and absolutely love it, though it is very pricey. I have been using Benefits They’re Real Mascara which is good, but the tube seems to run out a bit too quickly for me. Maybe, I’ll give Maybelline a try again; after all, I used to use Maybelline Great Lash since back in high school.

    1. Yes, I found ‘They’re Real’ got dry and clumpy pretty quickly (especially considering it’s a bit pricer than my normal mascara).

I like Elizabeth Arden mascara (they seem to sell them really cheaply in duty free shops at the airport) and buying sample sizes of Clinque on the internet so I use up the tube before it goes clumpy.

  3. I’ve been wearing this one for years (not the waterproof one) and I love it. It’s the best one out there.

  4. Thanks for this. I need a new mascara and I don’t know why it’s so hard to find a good one. Oh the number of tubes I’ve purchased and tossed as failures. I’ll give your new find a try.

  5. I truly love Maybelline mascaras, nearly all of them. I’ve used this one and it’s fab.

  6. Thanks for the review, Allie. Any chance you could post a close-up of your eye(s) before and after application so we can see how much difference there is?

      1. Ooops! Forgot about how difficult that would be right now. Hope your arm is healing better this time.
