I think this is one of those outfits that looks better in person.  Got many compliments from coworkers and even strangers on the ensemble.  It's funny, I often think the opposite of outfits I see on some fashion bloggers – it translates so well in pictures – the layers, the color choices, the textures.  However I wonder what people think when they see that same outfit on a woman walking across the street or standing in line at Starbucks.  Do all those layers make that same stylish blogger look like a bag lady in person?  What about the belting of that bulky jacket, or the scarf tucked into that belt?  Does it really work?

It's a fine balance – so much popular blogger fashion looks great on the body types of the women who sport it.  That which looks great on your favorite petite blogger may not look as awesome on your 5'7″ pear frame; your hourglass style heroine may be able to rock that which your athletic frame may not.  And fabrics often make the difference – replacing silk with cotton, tweed with polyester can often change the entire silhouette and effect.  With fashion blogs, take inspiration but don't take it literally.  Keep in mind life happens in real-time – when you dress for your lifestyle, you will be comfortable in any situation, not just the few minutes with the self-timer.

Anyway, I dig this outfit… in person.  In photos, well let's just say this is the only photo of five that passed muster!

  1. You look pretty cute. I think the issue with the photo is the lighting. You can’t see the detailing of the dress or the folds of the skirt very well, and it blurs your figure more than is actually real.

But the shoes are fierce, and the head scarf is a great pop of color. 😀

  2. You are so right about things not looking good on the blog but looking good in real life and vice versa. You look cute though even if it is not the most avant garde outfit! Your readers (speaking for myself) like real women in real clothes! -A

  3. You look fab – this is totally my style – and reminded me to pull that shirtdress out of my closet and rock it! Awesome!

  6. I love the dress and pumps. The hair scarf doesn’t work for me in the picture, but I’m guessing I’d like it a lot in real life.

  7. You are looking fabulous. I know how hard it is to stay on the fitness/weight loss bandwagon, but you are doing awesome!

  8. Allie, that’s totally my whole “issue” with the fashion blogs I read. I think something looks cute on someone else in a picture, but I wonder if I’ll look like a really overweight Olsen twin, or that crazy cat lady from The Simpsons. Or if I pair certain colors, people will think I quite literally got dressed in the dark.

(I think the shirtdress/leopard combo is cute! The red scarf as headband is adorable.)
