How to Style Universal Standard Linen: 8 Outfit Ideas for 2026
I love linen from late spring into early fall. It's breathable, works for almost every occasion, and especially this year, it's very stylish. I know some folks resist linen due to the wrinkling, but it's an accepted and downright chic aspect of the fabric.
That said, Universal Standard's linen is easier to wear than many. The fabric is a blend of 55% linen, 42% rayon, and 3% elastane, which means it has stretch, resists wrinkles better than traditional linen, and stays cool without being stiff. And unlike a lot of linen lines out this season, Universal Standard's collection is truly size-inclusive: every style, color, and print comes in sizes 00-40 (4XS-4XL).
Styling Universal Standard Linen for 2026
I've been wearing Universal Standard linen for several summers now. It gets softer with every wash and holds up well. This year year, Universal Standard amped up its linen with some phenomenal bright colors, cool prints, and new silhouettes I am loving. As soon as I saw the collection, I saw many pieces I wanted in my closet and saw many ways to style it. I decided to put to paper (blog?) what I envisioned in my head.
A few of pieces I ordered for myself, a few were gifted for review, a few I am thinking of still getting, some my sister has. I have honest notes on fit throughout. Photos of me actually wearing the pieces are coming once my Hyper Pink pants are back from the tailor. (Petite life: the fit is great, they just need a hem.) Stay tuned for the full review and wear-test update.

OUTFIT 1: Tonal Pink Done Right

Shop the Collage: tank (I own) | pants (I own) | tinted lip balm (I own) | sunglasses | earrings (I own) | cuff bracelet | bag | scarf | sandals (I own)
The Palais Stretch Linen Wide Leg Pants in Hyper Pink caught my eye when I featured them in my guide to styling colorful pants. Bold color, wide leg, pleated front. On a petite, yes, they need a hem. But the fit in the rise, waist, and seat is great on my soft curves. I got the Daisy Ribbed Tank in the same Hyper Pink, and they work together a perfectly matched set.
This collage is a variation of how I am thinking of wearing the pieces once it's consistently warm enough in the DC area for tanks and linen. I love the idea of mixing the bright pink with brown/cognac/tortoise, and in summer especially, I love an oversized silk scarf as a belt.
OUTFIT 2: Modern Color-Blocking

Shop the collage: shirt | pants (I own) | bag | shoes | phone case | sunglasses | lip oil (I own; code ALISONG20 for 20% off) | earrings
When Universal Standard previewed this collection I immediately noticed the color-blocking potential, specifically this Elbe Stretch Linen Shirt in red with the Hyper Pink pants. Red and pink was once considered a color clash; now it's a very on-trend combination. The key is keeping the rest of the outfit simple so the colors are the point, not a distraction.
Wear the shirt untucked with the top and bottom two buttons open and sleeves cuffed for the most relaxed effect. Or tuck it in. Or tie it in a square knot at the waist if that's your thing (start the knot with the buttonhole side on top for the cleanest result). Accessories in off-white keep it seasonally appropriate and the matching bag elevates the whole look.
OUTFIT 3: Sophisticated Pattern Play

Shop the Collage: shirt | shorts (I own) | sling bag | sandals | size-inclusive leather belt | sunscreen (I own) | lip stain (I own) | sunglasses | earrings | watch band
At 5'3″ and curvy with strong legs, shorts aren't always easy to find or style. Too long and they look frumpy, too short and they ride up. When I saw the Seaport Tailored Linen Short and how long and full they were on the tall model I thought… these won't be shorts on me, they will be more like a culotte or divided midi skirt. I took a chance, ordered them, and I was right. I think they actually look pretty darn chic (photos to come, I promise!).
I ordered the Avalon Linen Blouse in the same print. The two Geometrica pieces together were too much fabric on my 5'3″ frame; I think the Sandy Short Sleeve Stretch Linen Shirt is a better option with the same graphic print. With black leather accessories, a belt to define the waist, and black sandals, the shorts read as intentional and polished rather than casual.
OUTFIT 4: Casual Pattern Play

Shop the Collage: tank (I own) | shorts (I own) | bag | sandals (I own) | hat | size-inclusive belt | earrings
Same Geometrica Seaport shorts, completely different energy with the Universal Standard Cai High Neck Tank. The graphic print does all the work; everything else stays simple. This is the farmers market outfit, the mall outfit, the “I am running errands and I look like I tried” outfit.
If you're going somewhere that requires more walking, swap the Birkenstocks for a good pair of travel sneakers and the outfit still works. This bag is not cheap, but I am currently renting it from Rent the Runway and I love the size and design and had to share it. And if you use code RTRXAGARY you get 60% off your first month.
OUTFIT 5: Opposite Sides of the Color Wheel

Shop the Collage: shirt | pants (my sister owns) | bag | sandals (my sister owns) | sunglasses | necklace (I own) | bracelet
The more I look at the Adelaide Sleeveless Linen Shirt in Dreamy Purple, the more I think I need it. The length works tucked or untucked, it has a self-belt that's optional, and the fit is slightly tailored without being structured. It's versatile in a way that a lot of linen tops aren't.
My mom was an amateur painter; she would pull out her color wheel when getting dressed choose colors on opposite sides of it because they would be perfect pairings. Thanks to that color wheel, I became a fan of purple with olive green.
My sister Debbie has the Marley Wide Leg Linen Pants and they're very unique with pleats at the thighs instead of the waist. I chose the camo color because, color wheel. She also owns these sandals and they're gorgeous IRL, so I added brown accessories for depth and richness.
OUTFIT 6: Berry Shades for Work

Shop the Collage: shirt | blazer | pants | bag | phone case | shoes (I own) | reading glasses | necklace | ring | lipstick (I own)
The Adelaide shirt works under a blazer, which makes it more workwear-friendly than most linen tops. I paired it with the Coastal Linen Blazer and Iris pull-on pants in Acai, keeping the shirt untucked for comfort. The key to an untucked top looking intentional rather than sloppy is keeping accessories refined: a chain necklace, a clean tote, simple flats.
This is a comfortable yet polished work outfit for a hot commute. Linen breathes, the blazer comes off, the pull-on pants require zero fussing and no sweat line at the waist.
OUTFIT 7: Ruby Red Linen, Honestly Reviewed

Shop the Collage: top (I own) | pants (I own) | bag (AGARY20 for 20% off) | sandals | packable hat | sunglasses | necklace | sunscreen
After admiring the Kuki linen top and matching Palazzo Cargo Linen Pant in Ruby Red for months, I got both. I like them, but I have some honest notes first:
- The red is not that bright in person. It reads more like a deep berry or what I expected Acai to look like. It also cannot be worn with Hyper Pink; the two colors are close enough that it looks like getting dressed in the dark, not colorblocking. I color-corrected both pieces in this collage to show you what they actually look like.
- The Kuki top runs small in the torso. In my usual XS it fits, but a S would be more comfortable on a warm day. It's also clearly a peplum in XS. I had expected more of a swing fit. I like it, it just wasn't what I expected from the product photos.
- The cargo pockets are low-profile, which is a good thing: you can dress these pants up more easily than you'd expect. On a 5'3″ frame they hit at the ankle.
This is how I envision wearing the set: tan and brown and raffia and some interesting piece of jewelry to tie it all together. This would be a great travel outfit; grab a linen pashmina to put on for visiting houses of worship or come evening.
OUTFIT 8: Colorblocking for a Summer Daytime Wedding

Shop the Collage: shirt | pants (I own) | clutch (I own similar) | sandals | earrings | bracelet | lip gloss
Linen for a wedding? Absolutely, when the colors are this rich and the silhouettes are this considered. Purple and berry-red with cork and raffia accessories that go with practically every dress in your summer wardrobe. The bold green earrings punch up the color story without adding another piece of clothing to think about. A glossy merlot lip keeps it festive.
Stay Tuned…
Once my Hyper Pink pants are back from the tailor I'll be photographing all the pieces I got, so you can see how they actually look on a 5'3″ size 14/16 body, plus a few more styling ideas.

Your Universal Standard Linen Questions, Answered
Is Universal Standard linen worth it?
Yes, especially if you want linen that actually fits a range of body types and sizes. Universal Standard's linen is a 55% linen, 42% rayon, 3% elastane blend that's softer and more wrinkle-resistant than traditional linen, holds up well through multiple washes, and gets softer over time. Every style, color, and print is available in sizes 00-40 (4XS-4XL), which is genuinely rare in linen. The price point is mid-range, and the quality justifies it.
What is Universal Standard linen made from?
All Universal Standard linen, whether labeled stretch linen or not, is made from the same fabric blend: 55% linen, 42% rayon, and 3% elastane. The rayon makes it softer and more drapey than 100% linen, and the elastane adds stretch and helps it resist wrinkling. Machine wash cold, lay flat or hang to dry.
Does Universal Standard linen wrinkle?
Less than traditional linen. The rayon and elastane in the blend help the fabric release wrinkles more easily. After washing and hanging to dry, most pieces need little to no steaming. With wear, you'll get some natural relaxing of the fabric, which is part of linen's appeal. It's not a wrinkle-free fabric, but it's much more forgiving than 100% linen.
Is Universal Standard linen true to size?
Universal Standard has its own unique sizing system, so it is important to read the size chart and order from that. However, if you are familiar with Universal Standard sizing, the Kuki Sleeveless Linen Top runs small in the torso; sizing up one gives a more comfortable fit. Pull-on styles like the Iris pants and Juniper shorts run generously in the hip and crotch area, so you may want to size down. Wide leg pant styles are cut long and will need hemming for most people under 5'6″.
What sizes does Universal Standard linen come in?
Every piece in Universal Standard's linen collection is available in sizes 00-40, which translates to 4XS-4XL in letter sizing. This includes every color and every print, not just a limited size run. Universal Standard is one of the few brands that offers full size inclusivity across an entire seasonal collection rather than restricting extended sizes to select styles.
Is Universal Standard linen rough or itchy?
A lot of linen, Universal Standard included, may be rough or itchy upon purchase. I wash my Universal Standard linen before wearing; adding baking soda to the wash and when almost completely dry putting in the dryer with wool dryer balls will help soften the linen. These are my favorite ways to soften linen.
Can you wear Universal Standard linen to a wedding?
Yes. The richer colors and more tailored silhouettes in the 2026 collection work well for daytime and outdoor weddings. The dresses, the Coastal Blazer, and the Adelaide top with wide-leg pants all would work for a daytime wedding. Linen is a smart fabric choice for warm weather events since it breathes well and you'll actually be comfortable for the full day.
