Rage Against the Beige: A Colorful Summer Capsule Wardrobe
So many times I see capsule wardrobes recommended that are so incredibly… BORING! Muted colors, plenty of neutrals, no prints, no personality. I am all about color and print and fun details and accessories but that doesn't mean I have an overflowing wardrobe. I believe versatility doesn't equal boring and I am going to prove it to you with this colorful summer capsule wardrobe full of fun and pieces that mix and match now and for summers to come.
A Colorful Summer Capsule Wardrobe for Grown Women
This colorful summer capsule wardrobe is inspired by items in my closet and items that have caught my eye for this summer. I recently got this printed linen tunic and have seen how versatile it is. Untucked, tucked in, tied at the waist, left open like a jacket, worn as a swimsuit… and it goes with so many colors, too! I know this is one item not in plus sizes, so I have made a collection of similar breathable tunic shirts:
I just ordered the red voile top and matching pants; realizing the pants could work with the tunic inspired this capsule. A matched set is such a great option for summer; together the effect is elevated and polished but the pieces make great separates (as I show below).
I own a similar white poplin skirt (seen here), the orange dress in a different color (seen here), a dress similar to the green one, similar black pants (see here), linen pants, and cardigan. I own the same black tank, a similar hat, striped tee, the same black sandals, and similar or same rest of the accessories. I like to walk the talk when it comes to my capsule wardrobes!

This capsule wardrobe is free of shorts, activewear, and swimwear because I figure if you wear such things, you need what is specific to your life (check out my guide to the best shorts for grown women, and my guide to swimwear for large busts). I also was wanting to create a capsule that could also work for travel, and I do not recommend shorts for visiting many countries that are overseas.
Why Accessories Matter in a Summer Capsule Wardrobe
Accessories work hard in this capsule; the scarf is larger than usual (34″ square) so it can be a belt, a headscarf (very on trend this summer), tied on the diagonal at the waist (also a popular trend), and big enough that maybe you can do some of the popular hacks on social media to turn it into a bag, a top, etc.
I have more bags and shoes than usual; I think in summer shoes really make a difference in regard to comfort, activity, and formality of outfit. I own these black leather sandals; they are great for walking and standing and IMO are wide toebox friendly. The sneakers are mesh, providing airflow while also covering your toes (I believe the insole is removable, cover it with a no-show sock for comfort). The gold sandals are IMO a summer must; they take up no space in luggage and can quickly take a sundress or pair of wide leg trousers from day to evening.
The hat is packable; it won't get damaged even if you tuck it in your tote or squish it into your suitcase (if green isn't your jam it comes in many other colors). The orange bag is one that recently caught my eye; I like that it can go from dressy handbag to functional crossbody and it's proof that bold colors like orange can be incredibly versatile (though it comes in a bunch of other colors, too). The clutch is adorable and timeless; this will be a summer favorite for years to come. And I threw in a straw tote, which is a summer must-have for farmers markets, trips to the mall, the beach, or when you just need to carry more.
The sunglasses… I was torn between them and classic Wayfarers. I was able to get the classic ones in a Memorial Day Weekend sale for less, so I put the puffies in this capsule as I still think they're so chic. And I own the earrings; loved them so much I got my sister a pair, and we both find each time we wear it folks stop us to compliment us. They're also lightweight and comfortable to wear.
Fabric Choice in a Summer Capsule Wardrobe
The green dress and white skirt are cotton poplin, the tan pants, orange dress, and printed tunic are linen. The red top and pants are cotton blend voile. While the black cropped pants are polyester, they get rave reviews for being light and comfortable in the summer, wrinkle-resistant, and easy to dress up or down. The striped t-shirt is a cotton blend; it gets high ratings for comfort, opacity, and if you line dry, it lasting a long while
The tank is synthetic, but as an owner of several of these tanks, they are summer favorites. I wear with active shorts for days that are hikes to cafes, sport under suits, pair with skirts and jeans, and find it comfortable, versatile, and durable. If in doubt, size down. Line dry, it will last for years.
Even the bags are styles that are travel friendly: collapsable or structured enough to hold their own. With a travel steamer, you can get all the clothes and the scarf refreshed and ready to wear the next day.
Why a Colorful Capsule Wardrobe Works
When creating their own capsule wardrobes, folks often ask me if colors are harder to mix and match than neutrals. My answer is no… but it's all about how you approach it.
Colors are colors, whether they are beige and gray or pink and orange. The key to any capsule wardrobe is balancing the colors with a neutral base. Even with beige and gray you will want to add a neutral base of white, ivory, black, or denim. The same holds true with colors. It's what grounds the capsule, makes it cohesive, and provides the versatility.
Note how even with this capsule brimming with color and print, there is still black, white, and even a, gasp, beige-like color. If anything, these neutrals help the bright colors sing. If orange, red, and lime green aren't your jam, I get it. But I hope this colorful summer capsule wardrobe inspires you to rage against the beige, and see that whatever colors or prints bring you joy can also bring you style and versatility all season long.
Questions Regarding Capsule Wardrobes
Is a colorful capsule wardrobe harder to maintain than a neutral one?
No. The key is choosing colors that work together rather than fighting each other. This capsule uses red, orange, chartreuse green, and hot pink as its base colors, with black, white, beige, and navy stripe as anchors. Every bright piece works with every other bright piece because they share similar saturation levels.
How many pieces do I need for a summer capsule wardrobe?
This capsule has 21 pieces and produces 34 outfits. That's a solid ratio, but you don't need all 21 pieces to benefit from a capsule approach. Even choosing 8-10 pieces that genuinely work together can get you through a full summer with less decision fatigue.
Can I build a colorful capsule wardrobe if I'm plus size?
Yes, and I specifically built this one with that in mind. Where I didn't link directly to a item that goes up to at least size 20, I included a plus option in the shop list. The Universal Standard Sunshower dress runs to size 40. The J.Crew smocked dress runs to 3X with petite and tall options. The Lands' End black palazzo pants go to 3X. The hot pink cardigan goes to 3X. Color and print are for every body.
Is a colorful capsule wardrobe practical for travel?
Absolutely. I designed this one with travel in mind. The Eric Javits hat is packable; it won't get damaged even if you squish it into your suitcase. The gold J.Crew Factory sandals take up almost no space in a bag and take an outfit from day to evening instantly. The linen and cotton pieces breathe in warm destinations. And unlike a neutral capsule, a colorful one tends to photograph beautifully, which matters when you're documenting a trip.
What fabrics work best for a summer capsule wardrobe?
For warmth and breathability, linen and cotton are your best choices. This capsule uses linen for the orange Universal Standard dress, beige trousers, and Boden print tunic shirt; cotton for the J.Crew smocked dress and Quince white skirt; and a cotton blend voile for the M.M. LaFleur red top and trousers. The Lands' End black palazzo pants are polyester but are specifically reviewed as light and comfortable in heat.
What is the Camper Dana sandal?
The Camper Dana is a leather crossover slingback sandal with a low block heel. I own a pair and have written about Camper on the site before. They have a wide toebox, which makes them comfortable for walking and standing, and the slingback strap keeps them secure. They're a genuinely solid investment for summer, and this sandal went viral in 2025 for being recommended for walking 10K+ steps/day in them. I agree, they're worth it!

Wow! What a burst of joyful color. Love it! And thanks for reminding us that blah colors are NOT required. I’m so sick of influencers telling us we cannot wear color or pattern. It’s ridiculous, and we should not listen.
Thank you for focusing on colors! I am so tired of what my husband calls “mushroom” colors – it’s hard when all of the shops have the same 5 shades and no one is doing anything different. This is just…joyful.
What size did you get the Boden tunic in? Looks like it runs big.
I got XL, but if I didn’t have the boobs and shoulders I do, I think L would have worked.
R, I normally wear either a 202/22 Long or 16/18 Long in Boden, but in this top, the 16/18 Regular was perfect.
That’s 20/22 Long!
