Going Out Tops for Grown-Ass Women

When I started this blog in 2005, I made a capsule wardrobe of staples for every woman's wardrobe and in it, I had a Going Out Top. That was a top that was shiny, sparkly, beaded, and not too risque. For example, I had a blush sequined top back in the late '00s; I could wear it with bootcut jeans to the bar with friends but also styled it with ivory trousers for an afternoon wedding. I wore it under a black suit to glam it up for a company cocktail party, and with white jeans for one night on a cruise.

I truly felt that such a top was timeless and would work for any woman, regardless of size and age. And I still think that was great advice… in 2005. But my friend, we are no longer the people we were in 2005. We don't live in the same world, and it's expected that over the past two decades trends would change enough that what seemed timeless in 2005 is passe in 2026.

For a while, it seemed the Going Out Top was a thing only for those under 30 who still staggered home in discount heels after Dollar Draft Night. As a Grown Woman, it was hard to know what to wear out. While we may not want to head to the dive bar for rail shots and shimmying until dawn, we still love to have a good time and look good doing it. I spent many years in silky camisoles with blazers and jeans and dresses.

But times have changed and the Going Out Top is back for all of us. The Going Out Top is a top that isn't for work, it isn't for Sunday morning brunch, it isn't for a networking event.

What is a Going Out Top?

The Going Out Top is for a night out on the town. Your anniversary dinner at a Michelin-rated restaurant. A weekend with the girls in Vegas. That night at the beach when you all head to the karaoke bar. Celebrating your bestie's birthday at the chic nightclub in the city. Your neighbor's Saturday night get-together when t-shirts seem too little and dresses seem too much.

While my original advice in 2005 had a Going Out Top that could go from a company holiday party to the theater to a nightclub to a dive bar, fashion isn't quite the same anymore. Going Out Tops are FUN. They should not feel that with a pair of velvet palazzo pants, you could wear it to your niece's Bat Mitzvah or that it would look at home under a business suit.

Going Out Tops in 2026 are more specific. They may be able to transition nicely from white jeans to dark rinse jeans to black pants to maybe a midi skirt pretty well, but they're not necessarily going to fit under a cocktail pantsuit and your favorite vintage jeans. But they can become a statement and signature piece that can make going out fun and you feel fabulous on your terms.

But what kind of Going Out Top is great for grown-ass women? I'm glad you asked. I've been analyzing my wardrobe, the wardrobe of celebs and influencers, perusing the New Arrivals at apparel retailers, and share below the most popular and most universally stylish and flattering kinds of Going Out Tops for us grown women.

Best Going Out Tops for Women in Midlife

Updated for a new year and a new world, a collection of going out tops for grown women that can go with jeans to satin trousers, from a friend's bachelorette to a weekend in Vegas to karaoke night with coworkers.

If styles are sold out, I hope the collages at least provide direction. I will also share favorite retailers for buying such tops, and tips for bras and underpinnings.

My personal favorite going out top is one that shows a bit of shoulder. One-shoulder, off the shoulder, one sleeve, or some asymmetrical variation of this theme is modern yet timeless, and a way to feel sexy without showing more skin than you like.

With the baring of the shoulder, the rest of the look can be whatever makes you comfortable: a relaxed fit top with pants the same color, trim but not tight with jeans, loose and flowing to the ground, short and sassy to show off your gams… it can be elegant or casual, and it doesn't feel specific to a trend.

For fall and winter into early spring, I love the Reiss Lorna sweater. Off the shoulder, relaxed fit but not baggy, a refined rib finish, I've worn mine with jeans, white linen trousers, black linen shorts, shimmery silk shantung cigarette pants, and a silk slip skirt. My tip? Search “Reiss Lorna Sweater” on Poshmark and other resale sites; this is a style Reiss has carried for years and you can often find a like-new one for a song.

When it comes to underpinnings, there are plenty of convertible bras out there so you can remove one strap, go strapless, or have both straps head to one shoulder. I highly recommend the Wacoal Red Carpet Strapless/Convertible bra. It's a great choice that stays up, isn't horribly uncomfortable, and gives great shape.

Sheer Layers

Another trend that is great for us grown women is the sheer trend. In the past, we may have remembered sheer blouses or printed mesh baby tees. Now, the look is more architectural and modern. Sheer turtlenecks and boatnecks over t-shirt bras or camis, gathered mesh or chiffon making a sleeve or a neckline on an opaque top, sheer dresses over a bra or cami and jeans or flowing pants. I find all of it has a hint of 90s fashion but it's grown up and elevated and very wearable.

The key is to keep it sophisticated, not grunge, and not twee. Underpinnings are best when they are smooth, free of adornment, and of a fabric that lets the sheer fabric glide over it. Modern Architecture

Cut-outs, asymmetry, bold hardware to gather fabric… tops that feel architectural, especially in white or black, are very cool Going Out Top options for grown women. These are fitted pieces, the body being part of the architecture, and look best with jeans and pants that are at least slim to the hip to show the curve of the body. However, you can do a wide-leg trouser, a bootcut jean, or really any leg style beyond that to fit your personal style aesthetic.

Keep jewelry, makeup, and hair clean. Smoky eye or bold lip, not both, and if you do that, keep the rest of the makeup light. Hair slicked back or left natural, not overly big with hot rollers or overly sleek with a flat iron. Earrings can be modern and artistic, or classic hoops, but keep the look sleek, not crafty. And as for underpinnings, a t-shirt bra is your friend to keep seams and details from ruining the top's architecture.

Halter Necks

Halter necks are always dramatic; right now the look is having a very high or turtleneck style collar with the blouse draping from it. This is great for us women in midlife who may not wish to have their decollete on display. The back is usually just as covered, which makes it easy to wear with a convertible or strapless bra.

This is a great choice for those who don't like to tuck in their top or wear something fitted. Loose and drapey works since the neckline is structured and the shoulders are exposed. The hem can be right at the waistband to mid-hip, with some styles high-low offering a dramatic train or even scarf detail trailing in back.

Modern Draping

Like a softer version of the architecture, you will find a lot of blouses and tops this year with unique draping of fabric. Not just a cowl neckline or a bit of ruching at the side, this will have Grecian inspiration, incorporate metal hardware, have asymmetry, and come in everything from jersey knit to silk.

Again, this is a great choice for those who don't want to show a lot of skin, and those who aren't sure the formality of the night out. Paired with black pants and a clutch bag, this kind of top can go from drinks with the boss to dancing on a table with the girls, and can often be layered under a blazer.

Where to Shop for Going Out Tops for Women in Midlife

While I have collages above of sample tops, they may not still be in stock when you read this, or may not be the right color, style, or size for you. These are the places I go to when looking for a going-out top:

• ELOQUII: If you wear plus sizes, this is a stellar place to find really cool Going Out Tops for all ages. There is a mix of subtle and over the top, casual and dressy.
• Marcella NYC: A great place for modern and sophisticated tops with architecture, drape, and/or sheer details. A woman-founded ethical and sustainable label, Marcella NYC offers styles up to XXXL with some styles also available in petite up to XXL.
• Bloomingdale's: If you're looking for a department store so you can try a lot of different brands, I've found Bloomingdale's to have the best selection of Going Out Tops that would be chic for us grown women. Do know, Bloomingdale's has little to no plus sizes with most styles only going up to 12-16.
• LILYSILK: Mixed among the work-friendly shells and blouses you will find drapey halters, off the shoulder tops, and camisoles that would look great for a night out. Some tops are available in sizes 0-16, some in XS-XL.
• A.L.C.: While the size range is limited (00-14 and IMO it runs a bit small), A.L.C. offers the Cool Girl vibe but in wearable styles that will be chic now and years from now.
• Banana Republic: Especially if you want something that is interesting and not super dressy, Banana Republic always has a couple tops that are more elevated and interesting than the shells and blouses in your closet in sizes 00-20 with some in tall or petite.
• Veronica Beard: Another go-to where you can usually find at least one chic top that won't expect you to have your stomach, boobs, and back all out at the same time and maybe will also let you eat dinner. Sizes 00-20, though know not all tops come in the full size range.

What Types of Going Out Tops I Do NOT Recommend for Women in Midlife

My friend, you do you. You know yourself best, and when you dress with confidence and being true to yourself, it's the epitome of style. But if you're not sure what you're looking for, these are some things I'd steer clear of:

• Sequins: Sequins are OMG so fun, and I looooove a good sequined or paillettes piece, but right now sequins are going to feel dated. Sequin skirt? Yes. Sequin dress? Possibly. But a sequined going-out top not paired with a matching sequined bottom will not look modern. Keep your existing sequined tops for bachelorette parties and New Year's Eve.
• Lamé, Faux Leather, and Super Shiny Fabrics: Same as sequins. There is a time or place, and it could work in 2026 for a dress or bottom half, but as a top, especially with jeans or black pants, it's probably going to look dated.
• Fringe and feather trim: I love a statement trim, I think it's so fun. that is, until the night is over and you need to launder your top. Or you want to wear it again and everyone remembers so clearly that top with the fun trim. And feathers shed, I know from personal experience. If you're okay with the cleaning aspect and the super memorable aspect, rock on with your bad self. But for your occasional going-out top I recommend something your neighborhood dry cleaner or the gentle cycle on your machine can handle.
• Anything uncomfortable: If you can't sit, you need to wear two pairs of Spanx and boob tape, or you'll have dents in your body by the end of the night… don't get it. Not only is it going to make you miserable, it's likely a dated style. Right now, Going Out Tops are more fluid, or at least stretchy, and you can find an option that will let you breathe, and eat, and sit, and dance.

Does Every Woman Need a Going Out Top?

Heck no! I cannot think of a single garment that every grown-ass woman needs in her wardrobe. We don't all have lifestyles where such a top is necessary and you don't need to have one in your closet “just in case.” As my 2005 capsule wardrobe proves, trends change and that “just in case” item may be out of fashion by time you have a chance to wear it.
