Weekend Reads During the Annual Rehoboth Getaway

Each summer, I spend at least one extra-long weekend in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware with the women in my family. We started this tradition almost two decades ago with me, my sister, and our mom. When my daughter was born, she joined us. And since our mom passed in the fall of 2023, we have continued the tradition again as a gang of three. We have never missed a summer, and for this summer, the tradition is happening as you read this.
We stay at the same hotel, we often dine at the same restaurants, and have a true tradition, and it's awesome. Not too long to get on each other's nerves, but long enough to build great memories. And as always, you can follow along with my travels on my Instagram Stories.

See/Hear/Read
We watched Death of a Unicorn and wow, this is one of those movies where you wonder how it was made. Incredible cast (Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, Richard E. Grant), interesting concept (unicorns are real, and bad things happen if you try to kill one which is loosely based on The Unicorn Tapestries), terrible execution.
Death of a Unicorn wasn't campy, it wasn't funny, it wasn't scary, and no character was evil enough or ridiculous enough or loveable enough to save the film.
Jenna Ortega was almost great, but her script sucked and I was immesely distracted by her weird hoodie. I read it was chosen to depict a cape a la the virgin maiden in the unicorn tapestries but it just looked like a wardrobe malfunction. Paul Rudd's character was infuruatingly terrible. He was clearly trying to be like a parent from a 70s Disney movie who is all, “I will save the day by slaving away to The Man because that is what I promised your dead mother” but in 2025, it just felt like he was a money-hungry asshole doormat.
Leoni's character in constant ivory silk, Grant's character in beads and Birkenstocks, Poulter's character in a black turtleneck and white shorts… attempts were made to create comic book-like personalities but everything felt a bit too safe and flat for it to really work. And Poulter's accent… I struggled to figure out what the heck he was trying to achieve.
If you love Paul Rudd, don't watch Death of a Unicorn because you will be disappointed. Don't watch it if you like unicorns either, they looked extremely fake and comically scary and I had a hard time with folks not being able to SMELL them. These unicorns looked as though they were rampant with funk and pheremones.
Have you seen Tracee Ellis Ross’s travel show? It’s oddly enough as much about her packing as it is the destinations, and I loved every minute of it. It was a quick and fun watch!
Also, I have that quince bag, the brown woven one, and have gotten so much more use out of than expected. It seemed small when I first received it, but I find myself reaching for it often as it turns out it holds everything I need for the day without room for a bunch of other junk I don’t actually need.
I have one of those Coach purses from the way-back and I may have to pull it out again. I’m eyeing the Sorel clogs and the pink suede purse too, may have to budget for them though.
Thank you for all the dark trouser jean options & different price points! They are such a fantastic option for dressing up when you want to go with pants & don’t need to be super-dressy or formal, imo. The pair from BR Factory is a definite contender—I’ve had very good luck with many of their jeans (& other items too) and there’s an actual “real” store in my city so returns are easy. But I’m also loving those Madewell & J Crew jeans too (both stores that used to be in my city but no longer are, darn it). Would you wear the Madewell pair into the winter though? And would you try to hide the drawstring if wearing as a dressier option? Sorry for all the questions. I’m struggling with dressing up since perimenopause hit & feel like nothing looks right anymore.
Thanks for all the links too! I’ll be reading through them this weekend. Have a wonderful time on your trip!
