Wearing a Universal Standard dress as a duster and Spanx pants… both on sale this weekend!

Labor Day sales can be excellent for fall wardrobe staples, beauty favorites, home essentials, and end-of-summer items you'll actually use next year. But a big discount doesn't automatically make something a good buy.

I've sorted through this year's promotions to find the best Labor Day sales for women in midlife, focusing on the retailers and products the Wardrobe Oxygen community actually shops. I'll update this guide throughout Labor Day weekend as sales change or better offers appear.

What Is Actually Worth Buying During Labor Day Sales?

Fall wardrobe staples. Jeans, trousers, knitwear, jackets, comfortable shoes, bras, underwear, activewear, etc., especially when brands are discounting new-season merchandise.

Beauty you already use. Labor Day is useful for replenishing skincare, haircare, fragrance, and beauty rather than experimenting solely because something is 40% off.

Home purchases you've already planned. Bedding, towels, rugs, mattresses, outdoor furniture, appliances—depending on the year's sales.

End-of-season pieces with longevity. If you're considering deeply discounted summer clothing, read my guide to what clothes are worth buying at end-of-summer sales first.

A sale isn't a deal if you're only buying it because it's on sale.

Best Labor Day Fashion Sales

Lands' End

The deal: 50% off sitewide & up to 75% off sale & clearance through 9/8. Use code OUTDOORS.
Best for: Supima cotton tees, cotton Drifter sweaters, surprisingly chic & comfy jeans
My take: Wait on winter coats, now is the time for summer steals & fall fashion. Personally, I own and love this, this, and these. And I have my eye on this top (a very big trend for fall) and this dress.

J. Crew Factory

The deal: 50% off sitewide, no exclusions, plus 60%-70% off select styles
Best for: 100% cotton sweaters, budget-friendly work pants, basic tees
My take: I own this sweater; super cute & great early fall weight. I wore this shirt all summer long & know I'll rock it next summer too.

Boden

The deal: 20% off sitewide with code LABOR
My take: Boden never seems to have sales at the right time and things sell out FAST. This sale just started on the 4th with new arrivals in stock so get the newness for one of the best prices Boden will have all season. I am so into this dress which can go from day wedding to night to cocktail party from summer to winter with a change of bag & shoes.

Universal Standard

The deal: 30% off sitewide, including the new arrivals that dropped this week
My take: Universal Standard has been keeping items in stock far less time than in the past. If you like it, get it now at this good price. Also, check out Fit Liberty items; get the 30% off now and within a year if your size changes you can exchange them for free, no questions asked.
What I'm eyeing: This trench in any color or the new print, this top in black is a perfect going out top, this top in Twist of Lime with brown, gray, teal, or denim; these pants with this shirt in Forest Green or Blue Beetle (tucked in or out & blousy), this skirt, these jeans, and these jeans.

Eileen Fisher

The deal: 50% off sale items at this link, through 9/8
Best for: The pieces you've been thinking about all season long (like the dress in this post on how to style a swing dress or this vacation capsule wardrobe)
My take: Eileen Fisher doesn't go on sale often, and I hate to say it but the EF clothes at Nordstrom Rack are not the same quality. There are 985 items in this sale at the time of publishing this; a phenomenal selection of staples and unique pieces for summer, early fall, and all year long.

LOFT

The deal: 44% off your entire purchase + an extra 22% off + free shipping through 9/4; 50% off your entire purchase 9/5-9/6
Best for: Teacher fashion, weekend style. Up to size 18 with petites to 16P.
My take: Check out the VERSA collection and the casual jackets (love this one).

PAIGE

The deal: 25% off sitewide
Best for: Awesome jeans in misses, petite, long, and extra-long up to waistband 34, but PAIGE also carries apparel up to size 16 as well as stylish bags & shoes.
My take: In my denim trends guide, I recommend several styles from PAIGE: the Paxton, the Laurel Canyon, and the Aneesa. Brown is a big color this year and I'm loving this velvet blazer and matching trousers together and as separates (imagine with pink, berry, plum, ice blue…).

Gap Factory

The deal: 50-70% off sitewide + an extra 15% off
My take: Need cute socks for this fall? These come in great solid colors, and this argyle option is great (I'm getting some of each). A cheaper option to the trendy Leset pants. A cheaper option to the trendy Rag & Bone jeans. The cigarette jean I should have added to my denim trends guide. I'm seriously considering these for myself.

Banana Republic Factory

The deal: 50-70% off sitewide + an extra 25% off
My take: The henley is back; this one is only $12 and so cute. Wear alone and come winter, you'll wear it under everything. Fantastic lightweight cotton-blend crewneck sweater to wear alone or layer. A great jeans alternative for casual workplace and weekends. Nicely-priced work pants and matching blazer.

Levi's

The deal: 30-40% off everything + an extra 40% off sale
My take: Go back to the jeans guide for inspo, then visit Levi's. You can' go wrong with a pair of 501s this season, and Levi's has the original, a curve version, a 90s version, a 70s version, and a plus version.

M.M.LaFleur

The deal: 20% off everything at this link
My take: I have code ALISON15 that always gets you 15% off full-price items so this is a good deal. Also, M.M. isn't advertising what exactly the discount is, so I wouldn't be surprised if the discount increases closer to Monday. Keep an eye out.

J. Crew

The deal: 40% off the items at this link
My take: Honestly, it's not the items I would want to be on sale. New Arrivals (including the new rollneck) are not included. If you're looking to stock up on summer favorites, live in a warmer climate or need some early fall pieces, this is the sale for you.

NYDJ

The deal: Up to 70% off denim at this link; use code LD30
My take: NYDJ excels with great-fitting denim that is also comfortable. This sale has all the bestsellers, including the Marilyn which I consider one of the best straight jean options for fall.

Lane Bryant

The deal: Through 9/5, get 40% off clothing, bras are $35.50, and tees are only $12. I wouldn't be surprised if there's an even better deal come the 6th.
My take: I love Lane Bryant/Cacique bras; I think they make some of the best bras for large busts. I also appreciate that Lane Bryant is one of the few retailers carrying petite plus size (the pants & jeans fit really well).

Spanx

The deal: Extra 30% off sale items at this link
My take: I wasn't sure which category to place SPANX as this sale is a combination of intimates and apparel. But SPANX has been a top seller with the Wardrobe Oxygen community all summer long for its fashion so I placed it here. While this is predominately summer pieces, there are a lot of closet staples and AirEssentials separates.

Chico's

The deal: 25% off full-priced items
My take: Chico's has its new collection out and it's full of rich colors. I like this dress, this vest with this shirt, I own this shirt (see it on me here), and this fall a big trend is dressy jackets with jeans; I'm eyeing this one with a white tee or tank or belted over a black turtleneck.

Best Labor Day Shoe & Accessory Sales

KIZIK

The deal: Extra 25% off sale styles at this link
Best for: Hands-free shoes, wide widths, arch support, and comfort
My take: KIZIK makes stellar sneakers and shoes for travel, for being on your feet, and for everyday. And this sale has some good styles like the Athens, the Milan, and the Irvine.

Awe Inspired

The deal: Up to 50% off at this link
My take: Awe Inspired makes unique, beautiful, and IMO, feminist jewelry. Pieces inspired by goddesses and powerful women in history, this jewelry is high quality, size-inclusive, unique… and did I mention it's beautiful? I'm loving this necklace set, this badass ring, and this zodiac necklace.

Lo & Sons

The deal: Up to 50% off at this link
My take: It's mainly “summer” bags in this sale, but honestly I think a lot of the options are timeless. It also includes a cream version of the Aoyama 2, the bag I've been wearing to death all summer long (see my summer OOTDs all in one place here).

Sami's Jewels

The deal: 25% off sitewide with code LABORDAY25
My take: I've found Sami's to be a good place for nicely-priced costume-level jewelry that looks elevated and holds up to life. I have this ring, this ring, and this bracelet and all three have survived pools, showers, and even the ocean.

baggallini

The deal: 20% off sitewide
My take: A line of the smartest-designed bags perfect for travel, I know baggallini is quite popular with the Wardrobe Oxygen community and this sale can prep you for upcoming getaways.

Best Labor Day Intimates & Sleepwear Sales

Evelyn & Bobbie

The deal: 25% off sitewide (excludes The Busty)
Best for: Wire-free bras for larger busts; existing Evelyn & Bobbie fans
My take: Evelyn & Bobbie doesn't have sales often, so this is a good time to stock up or try the brand. Check out my Evelyn & Bobbie review for my experience with the bras and sizing.

Tommy John

The deal: 40% off sitewide with code LONGWEEKEND
Best for: High quality undies for men & women
My take: Our whole family wears Tommy John. For us women, the air briefs are one of the best moisture wicking underwear, also like the cool cotton & second skin.

Honeylove

The deal: Up to 50% off sitewide
My take: Some of the best-selling wireless and underwire bras and shapewear on the market, Honeylove makes great quality intimates and this sale includes some stellar items.

Printfresh

The deal: Up to 70% off sitewide through 9/7
Best for: The cutest sleepwear with the best ethics & size range
My take: My years-old Printfresh PJs still look great & feel even better. I take a Printfresh cotton robe on every single trip, and love lounging at home & sleeping in the Eco Satin pieces. If I didn't already own a different print, I'd be getting this with this, and likely these too.

Best Labor Day Beauty Sales

Jones Road Beauty

The deal: Through 9/7, save 20% on 3+ items, 25% on 5+ items, and 30% on 7+ items by bundling at this link
My take: I am a Jones Road fan. While I haven't gotten the hang of the Miracle Balm, I really like and regularly use the Face Pencil, Statement Mascara, Brow Pencil, The Classic Lip, The Bronzer, and The Lip Pencil. Jones Road never has sales so if you love it already, stock up. And if you haven't tried it, this may be a good time to do so.

Maya Fragrance

The deal: 25% off sitewide
My take: I have been wearing Maya Fragrance's “Base” scent for years and I never tire of it. And just a few hours ago, I was again stopped by someone saying how good I smell. Check out my Maya Fragrance review, and stock up while it's at a great price!

Nécessaire

The deal: 20% off sitewide (no code is needed so try ALISON at checkout, it may get you an extra 10% off)
Best for: World-class body & haircare with skincare-quality ingredients
My take: The deodorant is phenomenal, as is the body lotion, and both are available fragrance-free.

Paula's Choice

The deal: 20% off sitewide or 30% off orders $100+ with code SAVE30
My take: Paula's Choice is consistently highly rated for effective skincare without the B.S. I am especially a fan of this SPF.

Remedy

The deal: September 5–7 only, get 15% off orders $50+ and a free mini Vitamin C with orders $75+
Best for: Those who want skincare that is effective, science-backed, but not claiming ridiculous things. Smartly priced, good ingredients, not tested on animals.
My take: If you have strawberry legs or KP arms, you may love this. If you want something not overpriced that will even skintone and brighten? Try this, it's pretty great.

True Botanicals

The deal: Up to 25% off sitewide
My take: I am a new fan to this skincare line; currently using the Pure Radiance Oil, Chebula Extreme Cream, and Renew Repair Nightly Treatment. I appreciate the ingredients and ethics and my skin, which can be quite reactive, loves it.

Best Labor Day Home Sales

alison gary of wardrobe oxygen living room with Albany Park sofa and Ruggable rug from AD collection
Our living room with a Ruggable rug

Ruggable

The deal: Up to 40% off washable rugs, playmats, pet beds, doormats, bath mats, and pillows at this link
My take: I am a Ruggable fan; we have one in the entryway, one in the living room, and one in the kitchen (and the kitchen one is over 3 years old and still looking great). The sale has some gorgeous options; at first glance I really like this one and this one.

Our Place

The deal: Up to 45% off sitewide
My take: We have this pan and it's pretty great, especially for small kitchens. And whowouldthunkit but this air fryer/oven combo is a Wardrobe Oxygen bestseller two months in a row and now on sale for less than $200.

The Company Store

The deal: 30% off sitewide & 40% off new arrivals & 50% off outdoor
My take: So many stores are cheapening their products, but not The Company Store which continues to be one of the best places on the internet for high quality and not boring bedding, towels, and more for home.

Labor Day Sales I'm Skipping

Baublebar has styles starting at $10: I dunno, Baublebar often has sales and this seems to be the things they're getting rid of for fall merch. I'd wait.

Soma has 50% off 2 or more bras: This is a good deal if you are specifically shopping for bras, but a little birdie told me another sale is coming after the holiday.

Colleen Rothschild Beauty has $25 off $100, $50 off $200, and $75 off $300: This isn't the best sale Colleen Rothschild will have. The brand is a personal favorite, but this is essentially 25% off which often happens sitewide.

Labor Day Sales FAQ

When is Labor Day 2026?

Labor Day is Monday, September 7, 2026. Many retailers begin their Labor Day promotions several days or even a week before the holiday.

Are Labor Day sales actually worth it?

Yes. Especially when it comes to fall fashion, home goods, beauty, and wellness, Labor Day sales are often sitewide discounts offering some of the best prices of the year on what you want and need now.

Is Labor Day a good time to buy clothes?

Yes… with a caveat. I recommend you shop summer clearance deals with a clear focus, as you can get blinded by the deals and buy what you don't need or really want. That being said, Labor Day is a stellar time to get a jumpstart on your fall wardrobe for less as many retailers offer a big discount sitewide, including New Arrivals.

Is it better to shop Labor Day sales early or wait until Monday?

While sales are often even better come Labor Day Monday, size and selection will be drastically reduced. It is a gamble, best for items that are not size- or color-specific (tech, home, and beauty).

  1. Why don’t the comments have dates anymore? Is this to optimize search results? It is kind of annoying to read the comments, get readers’ ideas for items, start searching, and then realize the comments are a year or more old and the items no longer exist. Is there some happy medium where you remove dates but indicate what’s old and what’s new?

  2. I did buy a Lands’ End Wanderweight jacket recently, because the color was 75% off. I’ve never purchased a white jacket, but the price was so good, I thought I would give it a try. I have had a few of these jackets, and love them. Great in the car, and for most weather where I live. I’ve been waiting for bright colors, but they just don’t seem to have them anymore. A bright jacket can cheer you up on a gloomy winter day. Anything US had in hyper pink linen was long gone, many sales ago. I’m sad about that.

  3. Thanks for this roundup! Im ordering some of your LE picks. I wanted to
Let you know that the last land end links for the tshirt is broken.

  4. This is helpful—thank you! I’m curious about the Madewell Harlow jeans—can you wear them with flat shoes, like loafers, sneakers, or flat ankle boots? These have me stumped after wearing ankle length jeans for so long, but I have a pair of cropped wide-leg jeans from J Jill that I love. I see teen girls wearing these wide leg jeans with cropped & tighter fitting tops, plus sneaker, but know that’s not the look for me.

  5. Thanks for this! I ordered two Breton tops from US (using your link!) and think they look pretty much perfect. Much appreciated!

  6. Hi Alison, about that zebra sweater from Banana Republic? I was one of the ones who loved the look and immediately went to Banana Republic to order it. It came today and I wanted to share some feedback because I know you care about fit and flattery in plus size clothing. I ordered the size XXL (equivalent to size 20). It seems that the zebra design stays the same size no matter the size of the sweater. In smaller sizes, the zebra takes up most of the front of the sweater. But in size XXL, the expanse of plain sweater grew while the zebra stayed the same size, so he’s poking his head out from under my arm and his nose is centered right over my breast. Not flattering! I was sorry to have to return the sweater and I’m sorry if this will discourage others from clicking through to order it from your site – hopefully they’ll find other things that are more flattering and with styles/designs that have been adjusted for large sizes instead of one-size-fits all. Thank you!

    1. Oh no that’s awful! Thank you for sharing that information, I have no desire for anyone to make a purchase they regret and it helps to share that kind of feedback. I ordered the sweater myself, it hasn’t yet arrived and I’m concerned I too will have to return it. THANK YOU.

      1. You’re smaller than me so hopefully in your size the zebra won’t be so shy! I just wanted to say how much I love your site, and that so many of your recommendations that I’ve taken in the past have worked out great. My all time favorite is the denim jacket from Soma. Thanks for all you do!

  7. You do so much research! Thank you for that. I found me a cute blazer jacket from Talbot’s in a rose quartz color. Since I’m in California, I can wear it all year round. I would never have looked at their site if you didn’t clue us in on the sale at Talbot’s.

  8. Love this post- trying to show restraint but there are so many great options on sale this weekend! One to add: Naturalizer has a 25% off and free shipping deal through 9/3 with code LAIDBACK.

  9. Thanks for all the sales! This is a post I purposefully saved to go through tonight. It’s been a long week, and I knew I’d enjoy checking out all your picks. It’s time for me to update my Soma VE panties & this sale seems like the best time to that. Enjoy the long weekend!

  10. Thank you, Allison! For those who are outdoorsy, REI has a LABORDAY19 code for 20% off on one REI Garage item, which is their outlet store. Good place for bargains on casual/sporty clothes and workout stuff.

  11. I got two pairs of jeans from Lane Bryant during their BOGO 50% sale. The jeans feature their “magic waistband” technology and came in their “curvy fit” sizing. They fit like a dream! No waist gaps, a bit of sretch and the perfect length. (In addition to regular and long sizing, LB also has petite and short fits: two different sizings for shorter girls!) I can’t wait until cooler weather until I can wear them full time!
