2026 Denim Trends for Women Over 40: What’s Worth Wearing

Between straight, slim, stovepipe, sailor, slouchy (and that's just one letter from the alphabet) one can get confused with all the denim silhouettes available in 2026. Add barrels, horseshoes, cigarettes, kick flares, mom jeans, dad jeans, boyfriend jeans, girlfriend jeans, your second cousin twice removed jeans (not real, at least not yet), and it can be hard to know which types of jeans are actually worth trying in midlife.

And once you've found a silhouette that appeals to you, there's the whole question of how to style your jeans. What shoes? What socks? Do we wear belts? What kind of top works with that kind of volume? What will look cool, and what will look dated, or even worse, try-hard?

I'm going to break it down for you in this guide. Not every denim trend below is one you need to buy. In fact, I hope this guide helps you realize that you may already have exactly what you need in your closet. And I hope I can help you make them feel modern but still feel completely you.

What Jeans Are in Style in 2026?

Good news! There isn't one “right” type of jeans for 2026.

Straight-leg, wide-leg, relaxed, barrel, bootcut, and slim/stovepipe/cigarette jeans all look current. Rises range from rib to hip, and we're seeing everything from faded vintage-inspired denim to saturated indigo “rinse,” gray and faded black, colored denim, printed denim, distressing, and embellishment.

In fact, I think the biggest denim trend for 2026 is that we have options.

Especially when it comes to jeans, fashion in 2026 is more fluid than ever. This is great news, especially for us who know by now what we like, what feels good, and what works with our existing wardrobes. But for those who aren't sure, or want to do a modern update on their denim collection, it can be a lot to weed through.

Below, I share which 2026 denim trends I think have staying power, which are easiest to incorporate into an existing grown-woman wardrobe, and which I'd leave on the rack.

How I Researched the 2026 Denim Trends

For this guide, I researched Fall and Pre-Fall 2026 runway collections as well as trend reporting from Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Marie Claire, Women's Wear Daily, and WhoWhatWear. I also follow many street style and trend forecasters on social media and have been tracking what has been trending over the past 18 months.

I compared what the fashion industry is reporting with what I'm seeing from denim brands and mainstream retailers, as well as what is realistically available across different sizes, heights, budgets, and lifestyles. That being said, just because something is trending doesn't mean it's a good purchase.

I've spent more than 20 years writing about fashion for grown women, and my goal with this guide is to translate these trends into real life: what has staying power, what works with what's already in our closets, what may be worth experimenting with, and what I think you should skip.

Fashion, especially at this point in our lives, should be enjoyable. You can be incredibly stylish without buying into a single trend, and I believe style comes not from what you own but how you wear it. You don't need to buy a single thing in 2026 to look and feel great. But if you are interested in updating your denim game, here's what I learned and think is worth it:

Straight-Leg Jeans: The 2026 Trend That's Already a Classic

My verdict: If you want one jean that looks current but is unlikely to look dated next year, straight-leg jeans are one of my safest recommendations.

Straight-leg jeans are back, though honestly at this point I don't think we can call them “back.” They have returned to being a wardrobe classic. And in 2026, there is no specific wash, length, or even leg width required to look modern. You can rock a trim ankle-length rinse wash, a slouchy vintage pair of Levi's 501s, or a polished black pair with just the perfect break at the top of your shoes and they all will look cool and current.

Rise is also fluid. High rise, low rise, or something in between can all be stylish, though if longevity is your goal I personally wouldn't go all the way up to the ribcage or way down to the hip bones. Extreme proportions are most likely to date themselves.

What Shoes Should You Wear With Straight-Leg Jeans?

So many styles of shoes work with straight-leg jeans, which is another reason I'm such a fan of this silhouette. You likely already own shoes that work.

My general rule: the shorter the jeans, the sleeker the shoe.

• With ankle-length jeans, I wouldn't choose an enormous lug-sole loafer in 2026. Flats, low-profile sneakers, driving mocs, and sleeker loafers all work beautifully.
• With full-length straight jeans you have more variety: Chelsea boots, ankle boots, heels, different sneaker silhouettes, and slightly chunkier shoes.
• The larger the leg opening, the more visual weight your shoe can have. Ideally, you don't want your jeans bunching up on top of your shoes.

What Socks Should You Wear With Straight-Leg Jeans?

Keep the socks fun and keep them fitted.

With ankle jeans, a trim sock in a color or print that works with the rest of your outfit (or provides the perfect pop against a neutral look) is an easy way to make basic jeans feel intentional. Yes, even with sneakers.

For dressier shoes such as loafers or flats, consider a trouser sock with subtle transparency or texture. If the jeans are shorter than ankle length, I personally prefer a no-show sock look.

What Tops Look Best With Straight-Leg Jeans?

Pretty much anything goes. Slouchy sweaters work. Trim sweaters work. Tops tucked in or ending around high- to mid-hip. Sweatshirts can be oversized or shrunken.

Breton striped shirts and baseball-style jerseys are especially good with straight jeans right now; I like versions with a little structure that hit around the high hip.

The classic poplin button-front shirt is also back. Tuck it in and lightly blouse it out, leave at least a couple of buttons undone at the neck. A belt is optional.

Straight-leg jeans also work beautifully with a relaxed blazer over everything from a crewneck tee to a turtleneck to a silky blouse. More fitted blazers are returning as well; if you prefer those, I like them with a slightly looser straight-leg jean.

Wide-Leg Jeans: A Trend Turned Traditional

My verdict: Wide-leg jeans are no longer a novelty. If you like them, keep wearing them. If you're buying now, I recommend moderation over exaggeration.

Wide-leg jeans started showing up everywhere in the early 2020s. As skinny jeans retreated from their position as the default denim silhouette, looser and wider fits took their place. Now, in 2026, the wide-leg jean has essentially become a classic. You'll find them everywhere and at every price point, in all sorts of washes, rises, and widths.

What is changing is the proportion.

The wide-leg jean has grown up. It's not quite as a-line, it's not dragging on the floor, and it's not distressed. It can still be a comfy and casual choice for weekends, or more polished and structured.

If you prefer your denim on the polished side, you may like trouser jeans. Trouser jeans are essentially wider-leg denim designed with details borrowed from dress pants: cleaner finishes, trouser-style waistbands, pleats, creases, and sometimes slash pockets instead of traditional five-pocket jean styling. They are having a particularly strong moment in 2026, and I have a complete guide to how to wear trouser jeans and where to shop for them.

Traditional blue washes are great, but wide-leg jeans are also one of my favorite silhouettes for non-blue denim. Black, cream, ivory, gray, stone, and muted olive are popular choices for 2026 and versatile enough to remain a wardrobe favorite for many seasons to come.

What Shoes Should You Wear With Wide-Leg Jeans?

At the beginning of the decade, conventional advice was to pair wide-leg jeans with a chunky shoe to balance all that volume. That isn't necessarily so in 2026.

If chunky lug soles or platform block heels are part of your personal style, then continue to wear them. Just be sure your jeans aren't piling up on top of the shoe.

Otherwise, you may want to go more classic or sleek. Classic loafers, low-profile sneakers, and even structured flats are great options. For a bit more volume, Chelsea boots, clogs, and chunkier sandals work well with wide-leg jeans.

How Do You Style Wide-Leg Jeans in 2026?

The classic advice is balance volume with something trim. And yes, a fitted top is going to look great with wide-leg jeans. But volume on top of volume can be incredibly chic. The key is showing there is a body under all that fabric.

If you're wearing a sweater or sweatshirt, try one that ends somewhere around the waistband, where the jeans are still relatively trim. With a button-front shirt, look for a shirttail hem or side slits, or unbutton a couple of buttons at the bottom to give the shirt movement and shape.

Relaxed and '90s Jeans: Slouchy, But Not Sloppy

My verdict: If straight-leg jeans feel too narrow and wide-leg jeans feel like too much, relaxed straight jeans may be your Goldilocks pair.

Fashion is cyclical, but it's rarely exactly the same the second time around. Relaxed jeans are a great example.

I remember a pair of faded relaxed jeans I wore in the '90s. I'd wear men's plaid boxers from Abercrombie underneath so they peeked out at the waist, along with a cropped baby tee or even a bra top, Doc Martens, and possibly even more plaid with a flannel tied around my waist.

Those jeans dragged on the ground. The hems were permanently stained brown from puddles and shredded from concrete. They were slightly oversized: no need for a belt, but those boxers helped keep me from having to hike them up all night.

The 2026 relaxed jean isn't quite the same, even when it's sold as a “'90s jean.”

Today's version often fits more like a man's cut: relatively straight from the hips down, a bit looser through the crotch and seat, and often best at or below the belly button. There is a break at the shoe, but they don't drag on the ground.

Because of the retro silhouette, I especially like these in denim that looks like it has lived a little: faded blue, stonewashed, washed black, and other vintage-inspired finishes.

You will also see a lot of “relaxed straight” jeans. This is a fantastic option when wide-leg jeans seem too big but traditional straight legs seem too narrow. Again, I recommend uncomplicated washes and finishes if you're hoping to wear them for several years.

What Happened to Boyfriend Jeans?

Boyfriend jeans haven't exactly disappeared. The meaning of “boyfriend” has just become much less specific.

In the 2010s, boyfriend jeans were a recognizable silhouette: slightly slouchy, often softer denim, usually rolled into a narrow cuff above the ankle. We wore them with ballet flats and pumps, leaning into that dressy-versus-casual mix that was everywhere at the time.

In 2026, “boyfriend” often describes how a jean fits through the waist, hips, bum, and crotch more than what happens below the knee. You may find jeans called “boyfriend” that are full length, ankle length, barrel, narrow, or wide.

Boyfriend jeans in 2026 are a perfect example of not focusing on the name, but on how the silhouette feels on you. Terms hardly mean anything these days; in fact when creating graphics for this article I would look up something you'd think is clear like barrel jeans and see huge balloon legs, styles that just had a hint of curve in the hip, jeans that ended at the calf, others that hung to the ground… tl;dr look for what you like, not what you think is trending.

Barrel Jeans: Yes, They're Still in Style

My verdict: Don't knock them until you've tried them. The 2026 barrel isn't as voluminous and surprisingly great with a variety of shoes and tops.

I shared an outfit with barrel-leg pants on Instagram and received this comment from Wardrobe Oxygen reader Paige:

“I have been avoiding barrel-leg pants like the plague thinking I couldn't pull them off with my 5'0, 12/14 frame, but recently tried on a pair and they're SO cute & comfy I am practically living in them.”

I think of barrel jeans as the 2020s version of the boyfriend jeans we wore to death in the late 2000s and early 2010s. They're relaxed, comfortable, a little unexpected, and can work with far more pieces already in your wardrobe than they appear to on the hanger.

The key is finding the right proportion.

• If you're a shortie like me, I have an entire guide to the best petite barrel jeans.
• If you're tall, don't just look for jeans described at tall or long; in this guide I found a lot of “regular” jeans with multiple inseams (and some of them were more generous than styled advertised for tall women).
• Barrel jeans generally look best hitting somewhere between the top of the ankle bone and barely touching the top of the shoe.

Try different versions. You may prefer softer denim, a less dramatic curve, a narrower leg, or even a rise you don't usually choose. This is a different shape from a straight, bootcut, or wide-leg jean, so your usual denim rules may not apply.

What Shoes Should You Wear With Barrel Jeans?

Barrel jeans look great with sleek loafers, glove flats (a soft silhouette with higher vamp), low-profile sneakers, Birkenstock-style sandals, chunkier sandals, and clogs.

As with shorter straight jeans, socks can become part of the outfit. Keep them fairly trim rather than letting fabric bunch around the ankle.

What Tops Look Best With Barrel Jeans?

Because barrel jeans carry some of their volume higher on the leg, I prefer them with a shorter or tucked-in top. This is one of the rare occasions when this longtime half-tuck hater will admit that a half tuck can look pretty darn good.

A lot of sweaters and tops labeled “cropped” these days don't expose your stomach; they simply end right below the waistband. That length is fantastic with barrel jeans.

Last winter, for example, I wore a cropped cashmere cable-knit almost weekly with my Ruti barrel legs. Sometimes I'd layer an untucked shirt underneath; the sweater held the shirt closer to the body around the waist while the hem showed below.

Bootcut Jeans: A Yes in 2026. However…

My verdict: Yes, bootcut jeans are current. But pay attention to the cut because the most current versions aren't necessarily the bootcuts you remember from 2004.

Bootcut jeans became a thing to accommodate the volume of a cowboy or work boot. But in the 2000s, many bootcuts headed toward flare territory: fitted through much of the leg with a far more obvious flare below the knee.

Bootcut jeans returned a couple of years ago, and they're still being sold and worn in 2026. But the current bootcut is more… functional. They're essentially a straight leg with just enough curve or extra room at the bottom of the leg to accommodate a boot or create a little visual movement.

How Do You Style Bootcut Jeans in 2026?

Treat modern bootcuts similarly to relaxed jeans. They work with sturdy shoes, heeled boots, and more substantial soles, but can also look good with sleeker footwear; I just wouldn't go so delicate that your foot completely disappears under the hem.

And speaking of the hem, a traditional full-length bootcut should get quite close to the ground without actually sweeping it.

Stovepipe and Cigarette Jeans: The Skinny-Jean Comeback Isn't What You Think

My verdict: This is one of the most important denim silhouettes to watch for 2026 and into 2027, especially if you've missed wearing slimmer jeans.

Fashion publications keep telling us skinny jeans are back. And they are… sort of… but this is not permission to pull your stretchy jeggings out from the back of the closet.

Are Skinny Jeans Back in Style in 2026?

The “skinny” jean of 2026 is a stovepipe or cigarette jean. You may also see it called “slim straight.”

This type of skinny jean is snug from waist through thigh and then run fairly straight down, skimming rather than gripping the calf and not fitted at the ankle. In fact, this silhouette looks more like the 2010's version of straight legs than the most recent fashion iteration of skinny jeans.

Again, I must reiterate that now more than ever, don't go by product name, go by what appeals to you. Nothing is a fashion faux pas, and silhouette names in 2026 are arbitrary.

What Shoes Should You Wear With Cigarette Jeans?

The cigarette jean is often a little shorter than many current relaxed styles, hitting around the top of the foot. The denim may have a hint of stretch, but it's not going to be thin like the skinnies and jeggings of the past. The result is a jean that feels elevated and a bit retro, and that affects what shoes look best with cigarette jeans.

A sleek boot, with an elongated and/or pointed toe, with or without a heel, is the best option, followed by a flat with an elongated toebox or a higher vamp. If you want to wear sneakers with cigarette jeans, I recommend a sleek retro-inspired option.

How Do You Style Cigarette Jeans?

When it comes to what to wear with cigarette jeans, pretty much anything goes. It's all about your tastes and comfort level.

Oversized sweaters and slouchy blazers work because the slim leg provides contrast. But fitted turtlenecks and tucked-in tops also look really chic with cigarette jeans. Unlike other denim silhouettes in 2026 where belts are optional, with cigarettes, I'd lean into the vintage vibe and add a belt that complements your shoes.

The Denim Details Defining 2026

Silhouette isn't the whole story when it comes to 2026 denim trends. Wash, rise, length, distressing, and embellishment can make two pairs of otherwise similar jeans look like they're from completely different fashion eras. These are the denim details I think are worth checking out:

Dark Indigo and True Blue Denim

Dark indigo and “rinse” denim is having a moment again, and I'm so here for it.

But that doesn't mean faded jeans are “out.” One of the more interesting things about 2026 denim is how many denim washes coexist. You'll see faded vintage blues, classic medium blue, gray denim, nearly black denim, and saturated rinse washes, often all from the same retailer.

If your goal is longevity, though, dark indigo is a great choice. A dark rinse wash can look elevated enough for business casual, works beautifully with blazers, loafers, sweaters, and boots, and often integrates into an existing grown-woman wardrobe more easily than a trendy finish. And we've been around long enough to know dark denim always comes back in style (if it even ever leaves).

Gray and Faded Black Denim

If you're bored with blue but don't want a novelty color, take a look at gray. Gray denim is essentially a neutral but can make a basic outfit feel more modern. It also plays beautifully with black, ivory, camel, burgundy, navy, and brighter colors. And it may already be in your closet.

I have a pair of grayish-black jeans I got at Universal Standard a few years ago that look brand new in 2026. I also have these Quince jeans in charcoal black that I wore to death last winter and will be wearing all the time this year, too.

Shop Soft Black & Gray Jeans:

Vintage-Inspired Jeans May Be Even Better on Us

One 2026 denim trend I find especially easy to wear, and one I think can look even cooler on those of us in midlife than on younger generations, is vintage or vintage-inspired denim.

Think old-school Levi's 501s or something with a similar spirit, perhaps worn slightly looser than you might have chosen a decade ago. This is a denim trend that IMO is best purchased secondhand. Measure yourself, and head to eBay and other online resellers and search for older jeans that are sized by waist and inseam. Consider getting men's jeans and then taking them to the tailor to adjust the waist and hip to fit your shape.

Pair these vintage-inspired jeans with a crisp poplin button-front shirt, a chunky crewneck sweater, a merino turtleneck, or a silk blouse and classic loafers, woven flats, or ankle boots. You can go slouchier and add retro-inspired sneakers or Chelsea boots

My fellow grown-ass women, it may feel weird to have trends be something we already wore before. Heck, many of us still have these jeans still up in our attics or stored under our beds. The trick is combining them with the proportions and styling of now rather than recreating an entire outfit from 1996, 1986, or 1976.

How I'd Style Vintage-Inspired Jeans in 2026: shirt | sweater (I own) | earrings | belt (I own) | bag | lip blush (I own) | socks | loafers

Colored Denim Is Back

Another fashion flashback: who else remembers all the pastel-hued denim sets of the late 80s? How about the red, coral, and yellow jeans of the late 2000s? We may see that denim is back and roll our eyes, or we may be excited. If you love the idea of colored jeans again… I encourage you to tread lightly in 2026.

I truly believe any woman can wear anything she wants at any point in her life. But if your priority is wardrobe longevity, colored denim will date more quickly than indigo. We've seen how the colored denim of the 80s wasn't the same in the 2000s and it's not the same now. We've also seen how colored denim is a hot trend that burns out quickly.

For a longer life in your closet, I'd gravitate toward ivory, cream, khaki, brown, soft olive, gray, and faded black before investing heavily in bright red, cobalt, lilac, or teal. Especially ivory, cream, and gray; these colors have already been stylish for a few years and won't go out of fashion as quickly as cobalt and cardinal.

However, if bright red jeans make your heart sing and you already know exactly how you'll wear them? Rock them, my friend. Fashion doesn't have to pass a cost-per-wear spreadsheet, and as grown folks we can make things work more easily and red jeans can look positively badass any year if they fit your personality.

Distressed Denim Is Back… But I Wouldn't Rush to Buy It

This is an important distinction between what's a trend and what I recommend spending money on.

Distressed denim has appeared in 2026 fashion reporting and on runways again. That includes faded finishes, raw edges, worn textures, and other deliberately imperfect treatments. Personally, I love a beat-up jean. And personally, I won't be wearing them in 2026. I don't see this trend trickling down to department stores and mall brands, and it goes with so little else in stores right now it will be hard to style and likely not be around long.

If you already own and love your holey denim, the last person that will tell you to stop wearing them is me. But I wouldn't invest in any pairs in 2026.

Printed and Embellished Denim

Printed and embellished denim is also back. The runways showed floral prints, embroidery, metallic details, decorative trims, and other jeans designed to be the focal point of an outfit. And like colored jeans, we've seen this before but not in the same exact iteration.

There is no printed jean that will become a timeless classic, let alone be in style for more than a year or so. If you find a pair that sparks joy and you know you'll wear the heck out of them, wonderful. Otherwise, put your money on print and embellishment with a jacket, a bag, or accessories.

Deep-Cuff Jeans: Trendy, But I'd Pass

The deep single cuff is back, and I am not a fan. Not because it doesn't look cool, but because it's a trend that requires a master's degree in proportion. It's all about your body, the width of the jean leg, the height of the cuff, the shoe, what's worn with the jeans… this looks cool but it has no staying power and done wrong it can look really off.

And beyond the stylized single cuff, jeans aren't cuffed in 2026. If your jeans are too long, get them tailored. If you have a sewing machine, it's surprisingly easy to shorten your own jeans and keep the original hem.

Which Denim Trends Would I Actually Spend Money on in 2026?

After researching all these trends, here's where I'd put my own money.

• If you don't own a straight-leg jean you love, I'd start there. It's the easiest bridge between a classic wardrobe and current fashion.
• If you already own straight and wide-leg jeans, I'd consider a barrel or relaxed straight jean for something that feels new without requiring completely different clothes.
• If you've been mourning your skinny jeans, try a stovepipe or cigarette jean.
• If you dress up your denim for work, dinners, meetings, or events, look at a dark-rinse straight or polished wide-leg jean.
• If you want jeans that don't scream “I bought these in 2026,” choose vintage-inspired straight jeans in a classic wash.

And if you already own jeans that fit beautifully, feel good, and work with your wardrobe? Don't buy any new jeans.

Looking current is often less about owning the newest thing than styling what you already own in a way that reflects the proportions, shoes, colors, and combinations happening now.

How to Wear New Denim Trends Without Buying a New Wardrobe

A new jean silhouette can make everything in your closet suddenly look “wrong.” The thing is, your whole wardrobe isn't wrong. Your eye just hasn't adjusted to the new proportions. Before buying new tops to go with new jeans, have a play day with your closet.

Try the same shirt tucked, untucked, knotted, or with the bottom couple of buttons undone. Pop the collar, push up the sleeves, add a layer. Try a shorter sweater you usually reserve for skirts. Swap the chunky sneaker for a loafer or a flat. Add a belt, remove a belt, use a scarf in place of a belt. Add a statement sock. Pull out a brooch and pin it somewhere unexpected (waistband, top button of your shirt, in a bunch on a lapel or breast).

Then give your eye a minute.

I can't tell you how many fashion trends I initially thought looked ridiculous only to realize six months later that my eye simply needed time to adjust.

Though sometimes they will never feel right and that too is okay. Knowing what you don't like is creating personal style.

Start With Your Shoes

Often the reason new jeans feel weird isn't the jeans. It's the shoes. A different hem length or leg opening changes how much of your shoe is visible and how much visual weight you need at the bottom of the outfit.

An athletic sneaker, a sleek retro-inspired sneaker, a Chelsea boot, a sleek kitten-heel boot, a ballet flat, a glove flat, a lug-sole loafer, a horse-bit loafer… they all give different effects. Before giving up on a pair of jeans, try them with at least three different kinds of shoes.

This is where online shopping can be worth it because you have your shoe wardrobe at the ready. Yes, returns suck, but consider that the equivalent of the drive, the parking, the walk around the mall, but with more flattering of lighting and access to all your closet.

You Don't Have to Tuck In Your Shirt

You know me, I believe in breaking style rules, and that tucking in your shirt may look better than you ever imagined. But especially in 2026, you don't need to tuck your shirt into your jeans. However, you do want to consider proportion, and the best way to do that is always think, “there is a body under the bulk.”

Try a top that hits just below the waistband. It's not tucked in, it's not necessarily a crop top, but it allows the curve of the bum and hips to show. Shirts with curved shirttails, deeper side slits, or even unbuttoning the last two buttons create movement and shape.

I'm not a fan of ridiculous hacks to style a single shirt 500 different ways, but there are some creative ways to style a shirt in 2026 that look pretty darn cool and help create proportion. A few that I think are actually cool:

• Create a wrap effect with a brooch. You can also do this with a safety pin.
• You can also use a brooch to give shape to an oversized shirt. This hack I've been doing for years; you can even do it with heavier knit tops (my daughter even does it with a bow-shaped brooch and a favorite thrifted henley)
• This is a similar concept using two safety pins and a ribbon.
• Love scarves? This is a cool way to showcase one and create shape.
• Want to tie your shirt at the waist but it always looks off? Try this method; it always gives a clean knot and no gape.

Belts Are Optional

You do not need a belt simply because your jeans have belt loops. A belt can define the waist, provide color or texture, and elevate an outfit. But in 2026, it is not necessary.

If you do like belts, 2026 is your year because you can do any width, any texture, any sort of buckle. Go with a casual thick leather jeans belt with a brushed metal buckle, or a sleek croco skinny belt with a shiny gold decorative buckle, or go with a statement-making buckle belt that makes the outfit, or even replace your belt with a scarf (tied solo, or use a scarf ring or brooch for more style). Whip out your old belts, all things go this year.

Volume With Volume Can Look Great

One of the most persistent style rules is that wide pants require a fitted top. Yeah, that rule is as dated as not wearing horizontal stripes on a full bust or shoulders. In the 2020s, volume with volume is downright chic.

A wide jean with an oversized sweater, shirt, or blazer can look fantastic. However, somewhere in all that fabric, you need to show a bit of shape or structure: a wrist, an ankle, a waistband, an open neckline, a shorter layer, or simply a lighter-weight fabric that drapes and offers movement.

This isn't about figure flattery or making your body fit some ideal; it's about making your choices look purposeful. Style is about styling your clothes, and volume is most stylish when it's styled with intention.

If there is one thing I'd like you to take away from this guide, it's that 2026 is a pretty great year for denim because there isn't just one right answer.

• If you love wide legs, they're still cool
• If you never warmed up to them, straight legs are chic
• If you've been waiting for jeans to get narrower again, meet the stovepipe
• If you want something new, try a barrel

And if you have a pair of jeans in your closet that fits beautifully, feels great, and makes you happy every time you put them on, don't get rid of them because somebody on the internet declared them “out.” That person doesn't know what they're talking about.

Fashion trends in 2026 are a tool, not a tyrant.

Use trends to get ideas, rediscover things you already own, and occasionally try something that surprises you. Then wear the hell out of what works.
