Vacation Capsule Wardrobe for Women Over 40: 14 Garments, 30 Looks
I see you, grown women, heading to you search engine and social media platforms looking for advice on what to pack for a vacation. When we were young, we'd throw in a couple swimsuits, t-shirts, and denim cutoffs and would be good to go. But now that we're grown, we know what we wear impacts our experience… and what we want to experience is far more varied. You need outfits that can go from a morning hike to an outdoor café to lounging at the resort pool to dinner and drinks at a nice restaurant. There may be client meetings between excursions and spa treatments, or you may be looking forward to museums, historic sites, and seeing the sights. And you want to fit it all in one suitcase.
This vacation capsule wardrobe is built for warm weather and humidity without exposing a lot of skin. Elegant, elevated, but comfortable with a decent amount of breathable coverage, whether it's for personal comfort, sun protection, or respect in historic and religious buildings.

Inspired by the new arrivals at Eileen Fisher (hello sustainable and inclusive fashion in breathable fabrics), I created this real-life vacation capsule wardrobe that can work for a multitude of situations. Beach getaways, European city tours, river cruises, all-inclusive resorts, and those R&R vacations with a hotel pool, a great on-site restaurant, and a coastal walk.
This vacation capsule can be simplified for a shorter trip, expanded to be your daily wardrobe from May to September. You can add more elevated pieces or pare down the formality and replace with pieces ready for active excursions. Replace the raincoat with a caftan, the blazer with a ruana or lightweight cardigan, the linen shirt with a shirtdress that plays double-duty with more coverage. A successful capsule wardrobe has a clear color story. Pieces that can mix and match, and create a cohesive and elevated effect. The “why” behind this teal, sky blue, black, and coral color story:
- I fell for the “kelp” color at Eileen Fisher: a deep teal that looks good on so many skintones and plays nice with a wide range of colors. It is what I used to start this capsule.
- I liked the juxtaposition of the rich teal with the airy light blue. It's unexpected but works really well (and ice blue is a hot trend for 2026).
- While summer and vacation is usually about brown, white, cream, and gold, I liked how black actually added a chic pop to the color palette. Choosing linen makes the black vacation-appropriate and the strong color anchors the whole palette.
- Speaking of pop, I have hints of lilac but the real standout color is a bold coral that goes with absolutely everything.

The Eileen Fisher Sky Blue Linen Shirtdress: The Real MVP
If there’s one piece worth calling out, it’s the Eileen Fisher sky blue organic linen shirtdress. At first glance, it's just a basic dress. But it's actually a major multitasker:
- It's a dress you can customize with number of buttons buttoned and how much you cinch the waist
- It's a tunic layered over the teal or matching blue pants (dresses over pants is back and I'm embracing this comfy trend)
- It's a duster worn open like a jacket

One piece, four distinct outfits. I'm not down for garments worn in unrealistic ways (I will never turn my shirt into a halter top), but this piece truly lives multiple lives with comfort and style.
The Athleta Brooklyn Ankle Pant: Your Hike-to-Lunch Workhorse
The tan Brooklyn Ankle Pant from Athleta is the one non-Eileen Fisher bottom in this capsule, and it earns that spot. A Wardrobe Oxygen top seller month after month, these pants are multitasking workhorses. The UPF 40 performance fabric doesn’t look like performance fabric. Polished enough for lunch, practical enough for a coastal hike, breathable, quick-drying, and the tan works as a true neutral alongside all three core colors.
UPF: Sun Protection Built Into the Clothes You’d Actually Wear
I know I am not the only one who slathered on the baby oil, covered the record album with foil and tucked it under my chin, and spent way too many hours in tanning beds. It also doubles as an extra layer in any aggressively air-conditioned restaurant or museum and I've worn as a windbreaker for windy beach days.
The Lands' End Dark Olive Swimsuit: Low Fuss, High Confidence
A good travel swimsuit is one that makes you look good and feel good no matter your activity. I own this suit and it's a favorite for vacation because it lifts and smooths without gas pains, looks expensive, and stays in place if I dive into the pool, swim laps, or go out with the boogie board. Black is safe, navy is classic, but so is this dark olive that is elegant and surprisingly versatile.
Layers and Scarves for Religious Sites (and Everywhere Else)
If your trip includes any religious buildings: churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, you’ll need to cover shoulders and sometimes knees. These sandals went viral on TikTok last summer for surviving 10K step days in NYC and I can attest to the fact they really do feel good and look good.
Keds BlissMove Slip-On Sneakers

Okay, I don't link to Amazon anymore, but I searched and couldn't find this bag or equivalent anywhere else. I own this exact bag, I took it on my VirginVoyages cruise, and have used it so much and it's still rocking and looking great. This bag weighs almost nothing and packs super flat. I've also stuffed it into a day bag to have for potential purchases. It has a shape and a pocket so it's more functional than other mesh bags. I was thrilled to see it came in the same coral as the flip flops, creating such a fun and chic effect.
Athleta Water-Resistant Day Bag
This bag has a devoted following in the Wardrobe Oxygen community and across the internet. Water-resistant means it travels on boat rides, through rainy day markets, and to outdoor venues without panic. Morning Hike or Active Day
The Athleta Brooklyn pants take center stage, but depending on your activity, the sky blue linen cropped pants from Eileen Fisher may be a better option. With arch support, activities with less walking can be great with the Archies or Camper sandals.
Afternoon Sightseeing or Outdoor Café
With every pair of shoes supportive enough for at least casual walking, you have a lot of options. The linen will offer the most breathability for hot days while still looking elevated for a nice lunch.
Beach or Hotel Pool
