Many of you have asked for a more relaxed capsule wardrobe. Looks that are more casual but refined for everyday, and specific requests for a teacher capsule wardrobe for fall. This collection is for you! A mix of classic with a hint of whimsy, this capsule wardrobe is comfortable yet polished. It can also be easily expanded with pieces that may already reside in your closet!

Teacher Capsule Wardrobe for Fall

While I call this a teacher capsule wardrobe, it clearly can be for any type of person. I started crafting it for a more casual non-work look, but once I saw the cute book cardigan on the Joanie website and then saw a teacher content creator on Instagram in this J. Crew striped top paired with black pants, the person in my mind who would wear this collection was a teacher.

Shop the collage: cream cords (2-26W & petite/tall) | jeans (23-33 & petite/tall) | black ponte pants (XS-3X & petite/tall) | black refined tee (00-40) | cream sweater (XS-XL) | striped top (XXS-3X) | ribbed turtleneck (XXS-XXL & petite; link for plus sizes) | sneakers | flats | boots | cardigan (4/6-20/22) | blazer (XXS-XXL) | sweater coat (XXS-3X) | bag | dress (XS-3X & petite) | skirt (0-20/22 & petite/tall) | earrings | necklace | tights (XXS-4XL) | belt

This capsule wardrobe has a base of black, but it could easily be switched out for chocolate brown. While the colors are warm autumnals, each piece could be switched out with cool tones. Replace the ivory with heather gray or navy. The burgundy turtleneck can be switched out with most any color you desire and the flats can be black, a pop of color, even a pattern like leopard or houndstooth. As for the prints, this is where you can have fun and add personality or go very simple and classic.

Why I Included What I Did

This capsule wardrobe is simpler than many because not everyone has the desire or the budget for a bunch of accessories. And no need; the earrings can convert to smaller hoops for two looks in one, the necklace can be adjusted to three different lengths, and both are well made and interesting enough to become almost-daily signature pieces. I chose a brown croco belt so it can go with leather, with suede, with snakeskin, and most any color.

The bag I personally own and find it big enough to cart around a small water bottle and two glasses cases and a wallet and a pouch of makeup and a pouch of essentials. With two different straps and the ability to change out both straps for ones bought separately, it is extremely versatile yet looks expensive and refined.

The shoes focus on comfort with style. Rothy's are a classic for ease of wear, washability, and comfort. The burgundy color and shape can work with skirts and dresses as well as pants and jeans. Consider switching up your opaque black tights this season for a semi-sheer dark brown pair; the effect is modern and sophisticated but still as versatile (and yes, they can be worn with black or brown shoes and accessories). The boots are a bit of fun and glam, but with a walkable low heel and a reasonable pricepoint. And the sneakers are more elevated than a classic pair of tennies without sacrificing comfort (see this video for more details on this style of sneaker).

With such classic pieces, there's a good chance you can replicate with your existing closet, find pieces via resale sites, and/or thrift parts of this fall teacher capsule wardrobe. Focus on fit; whether it costs $5 or $500, consider having alterations done as it makes everything look more expensive and makes your body look its best. Even your local dry cleaner can shorten a hem or do a simple nip or tuck.

  1. Wow. I loved the book cardigan and was about to purchase, when I saw the $82 tariff added on. Well, we have no one to blame but ourselves!

  2. Question: Do the SL 72 OG have the longer tongue like the OG Gazelle and sometimes other Adidas? Looks like it from the photos. Thanks!
