Alison 159Alison 160Survived Day 3! For those who wondered, there is a major warm spell in DC right now – today I went to lunch sans jacket. Problem is the buildings are on End of November temperatures so the office is a bit warm. My colleague's office is FREEZING (he has a window office and also an AC/heat unit that he blasts all day) so I have my pashmina to bundle up in when I have training in there.

Today I wore my black merino shift dress from Banana Republic ('07), black footless tights from Old Navy ('06), tan Bern boots from Duo ('07), black coral necklace from Mexico (gift – '07), my silver hoops and cuff.

Hair is second day – I used a round brush and dryer on it while dry to smooth it out. No additional product. By time I got to work, it had a cool piecey wave to it.

Makeup is L'Oreal True Match foundation in C3 as concealer, philosophy The Supernatural in Beige, Cargo Matte BeachBlush in Tenerife, Pop Beauty's shadow set for brown eyes – the khaki and light brown blended on lid, the darker brown in crease and along lash lines. Two coats of DiorShow on curled lashes and Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in Glossy Rose.

  1. Allie, you scared me to death! 15 minutes would have made you more than my hero, it would have made you worthy of worship and awe! Thats almost exactly how long I take too. Just long enough to get everything done, while not rushing yourself and getting into a tizzy.

  2. Phew, I was a bit taken aback when I thought it was only 15 mins! Have to say, I’m looking rather rough today as the builders turned up unexpectedly as I was getting ready to take cat to vets and they wanted access to the back of the house. oh the stress of thinking I was going to be late!

  3. I wake up at 7am and am out the door by 7:15. That includes shower (though I don’t always wash or wet my hair), feeding the dog, letting the dog out, eating my oatmeal, putting in contacts, three sun salutations and getting dressed.

My hair cut and color isn’t cheap, but it allows me to do my hair in minimal time with minimal products. I have my makeup style (which brush, which products I KNOW coordinate) down pat, and my wardrobe is not ridiculously large so it’s pretty easy to dress in the AM. When I have more time, I get more creative or wear something that requires pressing, get creative with the makeup, etc.

My bathroom is very organized – train case for all makeup with compartments where everything is in its place. Same with brushes and hair products.

If I hit snooze, it starts the day off wrong. This AM I was woken by the dog regurgitating his dinner (???) so I am early and annoyed, but I shrug it off. Wake up annoyed or rushed and it will kill your whole day. Remove anything from your routine that is ugly, difficult, unflattering or frustrating. Better to only have one pair of pants that looks great and wear them every darn day than keep ratty, stained and unflattering ones that depress you. Same with makeup, hair style, etc.

A UK 16-18 is similar to a US 14-16, my size or a size larger. Check out shops like Boden – I know they are a UK store and also sell to the US – I haven’t shopped there yet but have friends who love their casual cool look and their dresses. Dresses aren’t cheap, but when you consider their versatility and the usual cost of a top and pants separately they are worth it. I love styles that can work in at least 3 seasons so I get my money’s worth!

    Good luck!

  4. That outfit looks fab! I’m in the UK and wear a UK size 16-18, I’m not sure how this translates into US sizing but I just can’t find any nice simple dresses anywhere. Every dress I see is a bit spangly, ‘dressy’ for going out rather for daytime wear and I get a bit jealous when I see all the lovely daytime dresses you have! I have a question though, how long do you take to get ready in the morning? Although I allow an hour that is mainly taken by me and the cat having breakfast then slouching bleary eyed in front of the news! I don’t actually take much time to get myself presentable (and some might say it shows!!). So, how long do you allow for the hair and make up etc???
