When you're a style blogger, you spend a lot of time perusing online boutiques.  And sometimes things catch your eye that you know you don't need.  You tell yourself no, close the browser, move on.  But it keeps sticking in your head.  You go back, and the item isn't available in your size.  You say that's Life telling you that you don't need it.  And then three weeks later when looking for something completely different online you see it… and it's back in stock and only in your size and next thing you know you have a gorgeous two-piece gown in your closet and no where to wear it.

Yet.  With something like this in my closet, I will find an occasion.

That being said, this is far more versatile than it may appear at first glance.  This is two pieces and a non-formal or season-specific fabric.  The top would look great with black ankle pants, ivory wide-leg trousers, a black midi skirt, as a shell with a black, ivory, or khaki suit.  The skirt has a clean waistband and isn't too stiff so it can dress up and down nicely.  Pair with a metallic linen v-neck, a band tee, a crisp white shirt, a black turtleneck, a simple ribbed tank, a denim jacket or denim shirt.  Often times the pieces that seem the most statement-making can end up being the most worn in your closet.

  1. I wouldn’t have considered this gown but being constructed in two pieces completely changes your options.

  2. Wowza! You really rock a patterned maxi dress. That is a gorgeous outfit! If you look that good in something, you’re kind of obligated to buy it and find a way to use it, I think.

  3. LOVE. IT. And yay for pockets! Why is it that gown designers can get this right but standard retailers can’t? You look gorgeous Allie.

  4. Alli–I don’t know what you’re talking about—that has never happened to me (ha ha ha ha—I only wish I could say that with a straight face)!
But I think it’s true, that sometimes the pieces you yearn for end up being very well loved!!
This is gorgeous…and it makes me love it even more knowing it’s two pieces! And I’m thinking it’s a 5 star restaurant kind of date soon!!!!

  5. Alli! What a great decision you made! I love it! And you’re teaching me something with your big print / maxi skirt wearing about the “rules” for short people — they are so wonderfully broken here and now I want to break them too!

  6. I love the dress! (But if I was nitpicking I would say the necklaces seem like overkill against the print)

  7. Oh I loooooove this! And it has pockets. Yeah I would’ve bought it too and told my husband to take me somewhere fancy 🙂
