The dress is @adamlippes and I borrowed it from @renttherunway. The bag is @jcrew and a splurge but I regretted not buying it the last time they offered this bag and this color is SO me. I mean, look how great it is with these many years old suede heeled sandals? Meant to be!

This color combination makes me so happy, and this dress was comfy even after a decadent meal. We all deserve to experience comfort and joy with our wardrobes! 💛🩷

If @thechicks are in town you can bet @debbiefaye78 and I will be there! So when we heard they were coming to @merriweatherpp we were so excited. And their concert did not disappoint. As always, a phenomenal show! If The Chicks come to your neck of the woods I highly recommend you go!

Okay I know you want to know about what we’re wearing!

My sister’s caftan is from @anthropologie (bought this summer so maybe you can find on resale sites).

I’m wearing a @bananarepublic dress also from this summer with the @universalstandard denim chore jacket and a hat I got from a @madewell collab a year or so ago. I glammed it up with some gold chains and gold drop earrings, but kept it comfy for a night of standing and dancing with @birkenstock sandals.

This was my first big outing since my eye surgery, and with a pocketful of eye drops I felt good (and grateful we splurged for good seats!).

For years I’ve trusted @somaintimates for the right bras and the right fit but it had been a while since I visited a Soma boutique to try on all the styles they currently have for a large bust. I must say I was impressed! Knowledgeable staff, extensive collection in larger sizes, and some of the most comfortable and innovative bras in up to H cups! Each body is different but what I loved:

- The Stunning Push-Up: targeted for the DD+ customer gives amazing lift and great shape under fitted knits.

- The Unbelievable Lift Scoop Balconette: sexy, supportive, and so lightweight!

- The Embraceable Wireless: I’ve recommended this wireless bra for large busts for years and was in need for a new one!

- The Stunning Support Smooth Balconette: this is the perfect t-shirt bra for large busts with padded straps and disappears under knits

- The Stunning Starlet Multi-Way Strapless: recently improved for more support and more comfort, this wireless bra stays put and gives fab shape

I also picked up some of Soma’s iconic Vanishing Edge panties which keep you line-free. The whole Vanishing collection is genius. I loved being able to donate my gently used bras at my local Soma boutique to give to those in need. We all deserve a lift and Soma strives to achieve that. It’s why I’ve been a fan and customer for years and am honored to partner with them. Soma is the perfect fitting bra solution. It was so funny and so quick I couldn’t not share! I bought this @hulkenbag a year ago and use it all the time. Carting shoot supplies, groceries, packing for road trips, and carting donations. This weekend @thenewdealcafe in @cityofgreenbelt hosted a community clothing swap so I made sure my family and I went through our summer wardrobes to gather that which we no longer needed or fit.

This wasn’t the first clothing swap and folks in town know my style (and my job) so there were some waiting for my arrival. Look how fast I cleared out this big bag! Speaking of the bag one other swap attendee said she got herself a Hulken after seeing mine in action!

It’s so great to know our old clothes are getting a good life and this bag makes carting them to the cafe so easy! I got my Hulken on Amazon, it comes in other colors and sizes too: https://amzn.to/48iTY4Y yep the bag is as great as all those ads you see on social media, I’m a big fan!

I can see clearly now…

Actually I can’t, but things after my retina surgery are much improved! My next appointment is in a month and I’m cleared to get back into the world (with some restrictions to protect my eye).

With a sclera buckle, it changes your eye shape and now I am nearsighted again (I had lasik a few years ago). Once the eye is stabilized I can get glasses or contacts but until then I’m 20/20 in one eye and right now 20/60 in the other. But the eye is healing beautifully and I feel positive!

And I could see clearly enough to fall for this poppy-colored cotton jumpsuit from @pistoladenim. It comes in a few colors but this one is my favorite. I went with XL (im@a 14, sometimes 16) and likely could have sized down but I enjoy the relaxed fit and the drawstring waistband to create shape. And hello zipper closure making it super easy to get on and off!

My husband took this photo right after my eye appointment, I think it reflects my positive attitude and feeling of hope! 🧡

Over 40 Beauty: My Daily Makeup Look

This article may contain affiliate links; if you click on a shopping link and make a purchase I may receive a commission. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Especially since I’ve started using Snapchat, I get a lot of questions as to what makeup I use. I shared my skincare routine last winter, but I haven’t updated since I’ve tried new products, made some lifestyle changes, and now it’s spring.

When I took photos of me using the L’Oreal Lumi Cushion I also took stills of my entire makeup routine. Figured it would be pretty text heavy, so I put them into a slideshow video. It seemed pretty sad without sound, so I added some of the music YouTube offers for free. Wow, all of them seemed so incredibly inappropriate! I ended up using, “Playing Hooky with Sloane” purely from the title. A Ferris Bueller reference?

daily face over 40 beauty wardrobe oxygenFor those who can't watch or don't like videos, here's most of the still from the video.  This is my daily face; a breakdown of what is used:

  1. In the morning I only wash my face if I’ve used the NuFACE (see here). If not, I just use Thayer’s Rose Witch Hazel with a reusable cotton round to wipe off any remaining night cream and any, as Emerson calls it, dust around my eyes
  2. Right now I’m applying three pumps of Elizabeth Arden SUPERSTART (reviewed here), then two pumps of Elizabeth Arden’s FLAWLESS FUTURE serum, and then a moisturizer with SPF (right now it’s one from L’Oreal I don’t especially love enough to promote). I then brush my teeth to let everything soak in.
  3. I touch up any zits or especially dark circles with Revlon Photoready Insta-Fix. It’s a bit darker and more yellow than my skin, which helps hides purple and red parts. This is not always a step I do, just when I’m looking especially tired or have a lot of breakouts. I put right on my skin from the tube, and blend with my ring finger.
  4. I then apply L’Oreal Lumi Cushion Foundation (read about it here). I use either the pad that comes with it or a BeautyBlender.
  5. Then, I use Clinique Line Smoothing Concealer. I draw half-circles from below my inner brow to under my eye, on the corners of my mouth where I downturn and have some wrinkles, a touch under each nostril. I blend using the Sigma F64 Soft Blend Concealer Brush.
  6. I then do my brows. I use Tarte Amazonian Clay Brow Mousse in Dark Brown and Trish McEvoy’s brow brush (#32). I don’t use a stencil, I sort of start in the middle and draw the end first since that’s the most sparse of my brow, then I fill in the beginning near my nose.
  7. Then it’s highlighting. I use Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal. I put not even a whole pump on the top of one hand and use the Real Techniques Stippling Brush (find it gives a softer look than my fingers) and tap along my check bone up to my temples and lightly blend
  8. Blush – I use NARS Sex Appeal with the Bobbi Brown blush brush. I brush sort of in a circle along the cheekbones and up to my temples, and a touch on my hairline, nose, and chin.
  9. Shadow. I use L’Oreal La Palette in Nudes 1. For the lid I mix the pale grey, soft gold and champagne together with the Trish McEvoy Sheer Application brush. Most days that’s it for shadow. If I’m feeling dramatic, I’ll dip my Trish McEvoy #29 dome brush into the medium matte brown and swish swish like a wiper blade into my crease to create depth. I’ll then take the Trish McEvoy #68 Everything Eye brush in the same medium brown and put it along my lashline for a subtly smoky look. If I’m going out, I’ll wet an angled brush I’ve had for a kazillion years no longer made from The Body Shop (this is awfully similar) and take the dark metallic brown from the kit and use it like liner on my top lash line.
  10. Curl my lashes (Kevyn Aucoin lash curler) and mascara (right now it’s Lancome Definicils in black).

It sounds like a lot, but I can do it in less than five minutes.

My Favorite Lip Colors:

350

Then it’s lips. My daytime go-to lipsticks are NARS Pigalle and Bite Beauty Chai. If I want to go red, my go-to is Lancome LeCarmin, though I’m also known to rock Revlon Certainly Red, Bobbi Brown’s Lady Ruba, and NARS Heat Wave. If I want shine, I add NARS Viva gloss over one of the neutral colors.  I also often use Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Romantic or Smitten, which can also double as cheek color when I'm keeping things quick and easy.

My Favorite Setting and Face Products:

350

If I know I will have a long day, I’ll start with Bare Minerals primer. It’s a basic silicone-based primer but works well. If it’s summer, hot, or I have to look really great after work I set my makeup with Skindinavia finishing spray (ELF’s is also pretty decent and I’ll likely buy again when I run out of the Skindinavia).  I also carry NARS Setting Powder in my purse in case I get shiny; it also helps blur everything so I look more polished if I have to meet with clients or go out unexpectedly after work.  At work, the only touch-up I do is lipstick. I sometimes touch up my face with the Lumi Cushion before heading out if I’m feeling fancy or am going somewhere right after work.

My Favorite Brushes and Tools:

350

Over the years I have tried a lot of cosmetics but lately I want to keep things simple and routine.  Having this base face makes life so much simpler.  Instead of 50 different shadows, I just amp up the standard daily look.  I am finding some pretty perfect lipcolors lately so I don't see the need to keep buying more.  Likely products will be fewer and different for the hottest part of summer; I'll readdress it then.

Do you have a standard daily face?  What are your go-to products?

I am finding that my concealer creases after a few hours, but if I use setting powder it seems to define my wrinkles even more (or I’m just noticing them even more because I’m obsessing about my circles…). I’m getting frustrated. Any tips?

I’m going to have an updated post soon but I’ve found using a loose setting powder (I use It Cosmetics) with a small brush so the powder is super light, it seems to get the job done without making the wrinkles too obvious. Hope that helps!

Late40s – I have a standard work face and the weekend depends on my activities. work day is moisturizer followed by a high SPF sunscreen. Then under eye concealer, foundation, blush, eye primer, face powder, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara. I sometimes curl my lashes. Lipstick at the end. For many items, I’ve found products I like so I stick with those. I’ve stopped looking for the next best thing, if it works and I like it , no point trying something else. It cuts down on disappointment and a drawer of unused products. I like the Elf face setting spray in the summer (thanks for the recommendation). Still searching for a great mascara. I don’t care what the formula claims, I always end up with some under my eyes by the end of the day. I thought I had found “The One”, but my latest tube has been clumpy and is leaving traces under my eyes. Weekend face is similar but sometimes I use a BB cream instead of foundation and less eye makeup.

I have a bag from ipsy I keep my daily bare minimum make up in, right now it has:
    Elf BB Cream
    Sephora concealer
    Tarte bronzer
    Physicians formula blush in pink
    Ysl mascara
Eyelash curler/ knockoff beauty blender/blush brush
    Benefit bluff dust yellow powder.

I add in shadows, lipcolor, and eyeliner.
I prefer the nyx setting spray

I’m not >40 but my makeup routine is pretty similar to yours, except I typically skip the eyeshadow (I rub my eyelids when I get tired!) and lipstick (unless I’m going out – I get too paranoid about smudging it or eating it off! I stick to a basic tinted balm). I use a nude eyeliner from NARS on my lower waterline and it really helps make me look more awake though, I would recommend it! (Not that you look tired – but it’s really awesome)
I tried a lot of foundations over the years (I have rosacea so trying to cover that without looking like I was wearing a mask was tricky for a while!) but now swear by a combination of MAC yellow CC cream (knocks out all the redness) and Dior foundation (weightless!). I typically don’t wear makeup at weekends if I know I’m just going to the gym and hanging out at home, although I find I touch my face more as a result so might start wearing a little bit (post-workout) as a mental note-to-self!

Make up over 66; moisturizer with SPF 30 (then go work out). After my shower, Aveeno tinted moisturizer with SPF 30, spot correct with foundation, cream blush and mascara. Finish with lipstick. Takes me about one minute. That’s about all I’m willing to fuss over my face, but then I’m not being photographed for an online blog. If I were, I’m sure I’d be doing more.

I’ll be a bit quiet on here and other channels because I had eye (retinal) surgery this past weekend. I was having what I thought were ocular migraines but come to find out I was experiencing lattice degeneration, which is thinning/holes in the retina. I had surgery Saturday for my right eye and later on they’ll work on the left eye, which isn’t as bad and can be remedied by laser, in office.

I share not because I’m Mrs. Frizzle meets Iris Apfel as I recuperate at home, but because this whole thing has been a lesson on trusting my gut. And I want to remind you to do the same.

As we get older our bodies can feel like strangers. Things are constantly changing and it’s easy to just assume your annual physical will catch anything wrong. But if you slow down and listen to your body you’ll know when things are just a sign of aging and life and what seems unusual. That nagging issue may be something more serious.

And if you’re seeing flashing lights, floaters, spiderwebs or other odd eye things get checked out ASAP. It may be nothing but take it from me, it may actually be something. ❤️

Okay, going back to my big sunglasses caftan recuperation life!

Ladies who lunch…

While in Savannah, I made sure to get lunch reservations for me and E at @theoldepinkhouse she loves the color pink, historic homes, and ghost stories so it was a perfect choice!

Built in 1789 on Reynolds Square, there are stories of guests seeing ghosts, cutlery and wine bottles moving along with an elegant and truly delicious dining.

While we didn’t see any apparitions, we did have a lovely lunch with impeccable service and after toured all floors of the home. I highly recommend a visit if you’re visiting Savannah!

Scenes from a week in Savannah…

The three of us (and our dog Oscar!) had a warm and humid but wonderful time exploring Savannah, Georgia earlier this month. Our daughter visited this gorgeous city last summer with her @girlscouts troop but wanted to return to experience more. We let her choose our adventures and play your guide and it was awesome. We cannot wait to visit again, though next time it won’t be August 🥵

Stripes are always right…

Y’all know I love stripes and when @universalstandard came out with their Breton-stripe dresses and tops I HAD to try them! As expected, the quality is stellar, the fit boosts my confidence, and I appreciate the range of colors (5 different stripes to choose from) and sizes (00-50). For reference, I’m wearing XS but preferred S for the top and I usually wear a 14 or XL in other brands.

The tote is @able and it’s a soft yet durable leather that just looks better with time. This color (cognac) is one that transitions nicely from summer to fall.
